Remote no longer puts mac to sleep

I know front row is gone... (switched to Plex now, though I am still upset that Front Row was removed)
But other remote functions seem to be gone.
For example, I used my remote to put my mac to sleep after watching a movie.
It was one of my favorate things (besides front row).  When I am in bed, my Mac is my media box, and my remote controls it..
Not... Anymore?
Yes Plex works, but I cant put the Mac to sleep.
Ideas?

  • How does one put Mac to sleep using the keyboard (Lion)

I have put my Mac to sleep by pressing command, option & the eject key. Screen goes blank/dark compter a sleep.  I have noticed this not longer works.  The screen goes blank but come right back on.  Has that command been eliminated in recent 'upgrades'?

    that still works for me.

  • Put Mac to Sleep - Shutdown by itself

When I put my Mac to sleep at night, my Mac somehow shut itself down during the night, so I have to power it up again during the day. This happen more often then not. I am using an UPS. Any idea why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    Sherman

I'm on a 17" Powerbook and mine does the same thing. Also, even when it does not power down the clock freezes up and the darn rainbow wheel begins spining when I point the finder to the clock. Any ideas anybody?

  • Is it better to put Mac in sleep or just power off?

    Hi there,
I am a new user for Mac, (i just have one Macbook Pro) would very much to know the suggestion: either we should close the lip, put the mac in sleep mode or power off every day when finished the work?
which one is better for computer? someone says better not turning on and off every day, do so unless you will not use Mac for days. but I also found people says keep the computer in sleep mode might have trouble to wake it up later...
    any experts suggestion?
    thanks,

I would not regard myself as expert and you are going to get opinions for both approaches. I have just passed on a 3 year-old MacBook Pro that has never been off, apart from updating when restarts are required. Similarly, my iMac sleeps (protected by UPS) and is not turned off. I am happy this way.
I would take slight exception to your process, however. In my opinion, I put the MacBook Pro to sleep by using OptionCommandDelete (or the Apple menu) and wait until the power light pulses before closing the lid.

  • Energy saver will not put Mac to sleep

I have a new Intel Mac mini. I am running off an external drive (MiniStack2). The drive was formatted and then had data transferred from old G4. The internal drive, when used as a start-up disk, functions fine. The external drive will not enter sleep mode (screen turns off, but not HD). The G4 had similar problem. Not sure why one drive as start-up drive and other does not. I have quit all active processes and tried every set of options - the machine will not put HD to sleep.
Is there a plist or other file I must reload? I am certain this is a software issue. Problem in 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 (and 10.4.x on G4)

    No it isn't.

  • Is it good to put mac to sleep or shut down?

Hello, I wanted to know which is better for my macbook air, putting it to sleep or shutting it down? I use it almost everyday, exceptions when I am at work and sleeping. When is best to shut it down?

I believe there's no right or wrong answer ... it's personal preference.  I use my MacBook Air every day, and keep it asleep during the day when I'm not using it.  But I shut it down every night.

OK, thanks. First, open Disk Utility and the Repair Disk Permissions on your internal HD. You can find DU in Applications - Utilitie. After doing so please restart in Safe Mode, this is easily done by holding down the Shift Key on your keyboard when you hear the start up tone, you will see a progress bar appear letting yuo know it's starting in Safe Mode. Then reset the SMC and PRAM, instructions can be found by clicking iMac SMC and PRAM reset. Then retest.

  • Recording audio puts Mac to sleep??

I occasionally use QuickTime Player's "Make Audio Recording" feature on my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) to make simple utility recordings, such as archiving my voice-mail box so I can clean it out, or recording a live telephone conversation (typically when the other side is also recording it).
Today I used it to record a call to a bank card company.  About 20 seconds into the recording my screen went dark.  I could see the cursor move when I moved it, but nothing else.  In an attempt to get my screen back, I jiggled the mouse, tried the shift and return keys, then ESC, then command-tab -- nothing would get my screen back.  This lasted for 5-10 seconds.  Then I heard my external drives spinning down and my MacBook Pro actually went to sleep, pulsing light and all!  I did a quick double-check, and the power cord was still attached (as it usually is) and glowing green.
I woke the Mac up by tapping the shift key and the screen came back up.  The recording function had stopped (obviously).  Since I was still in the middle of the call, I opened up another recording window and started again.  About 20 seconds later, the same behavior occurred!
I've never seen this happen before, and I've made lots of recordings.
Since the light started pulsing immeiately after the drives powered down, I'm thinking the black screen for 5-10 seconds must have been the "memory save" time prior to sleep mode (which I never see because I always shut the lid to sleep it).  It looks like something in QuickTime Player is triggering the same mechanism as the voluntary "go to sleep" command under the Apple Menu.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?  Is there a solution?

    Hello again:
I hunted all over but could not find a preference file (there must be one that affects wake schedules). You might want to look at all of the preference files to see if something jumps out. Since I do not have a scheduled wake event, I would not have a preference file that would be relevant. There are some things in Macintosh HD>system>library but I have not done anything with those items and never suggest things that have an unknown outcome.
I went through a lot of material, but could not find anything relevant.
I do remember something from a long time ago, but it is fuzzy. As I recall, I read about someone having the same problem. They entered a wake schedule and then could not get rid of it. If my memory is OK (a stretch) they entered a wake schedule time. Shut the computer down. Booted and eliminated the wake schedule. Shut down and booted again. Problem went away.
The above sounds quite arcane - even to me, but it cannot hurt anything either.

  • Unidentified process puts mac to sleep

A few days ago my mac started displaying a pop up window announcing that it was scheduled to go to sleep in 60 seconds. This notification has since appeared every day around 7.30pm (I haven't checked the exact time or determined whether it differs from one day to the next).
First thing I did was to see if my mac was indeed scheduled to go to sleep by checking the Energy Saver control panel. It isn't. Nor are any other users logged in that could have scheduled the mac to go to sleep.
I downloaded Cronnix to check if any sleep events were scheduled by me or 'root'. Again, no such events seem to be scheduled.
Does anyone know how I can find out how to cancel the sleep schedule for my mac? More generally: is there a way to find out (e.g. using Terminal) at what time my mac is scheduled to go to sleep?

  • Hot Corners do not seem to put Mac to sleep or activate screen saver

All was been working fine and as expected on my Macbook until the 10.6.2 update. I have left hot corner set as screen saver, and right hot corner set to sleep the display. When I go to the hot corners, sleep or screen saver is activated, but then I walk away and a few minutes later the screen comes on again...
At first I thought this was just my macbook (nothing was running but email and no external devices attached), but then It started doing this to my MacPro after the last update...exact same thing.. Then it started happening to my work iMac, then my daughters iMac and now my sons iMac. The only machine that doesn't seem to be effected is my wifes MacMini - and she is still running 10.6.1.
Does anyone know if there is an update somewhere, or how to fix this issue?
    thanks

  • Putting mac to sleep

Hi all you out there. Does anyone know if it is possible to create a keyboard shortcut to put an imac to sleep? I thought automator or maybe quicksilver would be able to but I can't seem to find any way of doing it, has anyone got any ideas.

Are you saying this keycombo only turns off the screen of your iMac? Your machine does not go to sleep?

  • Apple tv 2 wake Mac from sleep

Does iTunes need to be running in background when putting mac to sleep. My apple TV2 will not wake my mac (on ethernet through TC) unless iTunes is running or minimized in background. Is this normal or can iTunes be exited completely before sleeping the mac and still have ATV awaken it?

    you must have itunes running.
even if the mac were to wake up, if itunes wasn't running then appletv would have nothing to connect to.

  • Can't wake Mac from sleep.

This is a new problem. Yesterday, when I tapped the keyboard to wake my iMacG5 (Dec., 2004), she went black. ON button no help.
Unplugged power cord, replugged, then ON button. She fired up.
Instead of putting Mac to sleep at the end of the day, I shut it down. This morning, used the ON button to get it going. No problem.
But later, when I used Sleep, the same thing happened. Touching the keyboard did not wake her up. Black screen again. Unplug and replug again.
Any ideas or does this require a trip to the Genius bar?
    Thanks!

Unplugging and replugging essentially resets the SMU, so it seems the you are at the beginning of a power/thermal problem. See if you qualify for Apple's Repair extension programs, they will say that it's only good for three years after the date of purchase, but try a little gentle persuasion and see if you can't make them help you.

  • Way to remotely wake Mac from sleep?

I'm posting this from 33,967 feet aboard Virgin America.  I was remotely accessing my computer via VNC for iPhone and using the inflight Wi-Fi, when my iMac overheated and automatically put itself to sleep.  I'm pretty sure that's what happened, it's done it before.  I had iCam running so I could monitor my living room while I am traveling and keep am eye on my cat.  It was all working great until I stupidly started using safari remotely and made my processor heat up and over heat the machine (it's a G5 iMac and my apartment gets pretty hot AND there is a heatwave today).  I'm kind of stressed out right now because I can't connect to use iCam and watch my cat.  Wondering if there is a remote comand or something I can send via a terminal app to wake the machine?  Otherwise I'm hoping my cat gets bored and hops up on the desk and steps on the keyboard or something.  I'm thinking this is a long shot hoping somebody knows something I don't.  Thanks in advance.

P.S.  If it's a power failure, I do have the machine set to automatically restart after a power interruption, and automatically log back in..

This requires sending it a magic packet and is only possible if it is set to wake for administrator access from the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, you know it's current public IP, the interface it's connected through is supported(many Macs can't do this over a wireless connection), and if you're using a router, port forwarding for that type of packet is enabled.
