Cannot open backup files from Seagate drive
My original plan was the backup my files before upgrading my iMac from OS Tiger 10.4 to the current version of 10.6.3 (now .8 after updates).
I bought a Seagate external drive to backup my personal documents (.doc, .jpg's, .pdf's) on Tiger. After successfully installing Snow Leopard, the files won't open. A message saying it cannot open it. All my html files I created come up gibberish.
BUT the backup files on the drive are all fine and all show up. The backup drive works totally fine. Is it because of the OS upgrade? IF i went back to Tiger will this work???After successfully installing Snow Leopard, the files won't open. A message saying it cannot open it. All my html files I created come up gibberish.
Do you have versions of software that run on Snow Leopard to open these files? If the applications were upgraded for Snow Leopard (vs. a new version issued after Snow Leopard came out), you may need to upgarde various application to open those files. What's the exact wording of the message you get?
But the backup files on the drive are all fine and all show up. The backup drive works totally fine.
That just indicates there's no problem with the files, but it still doesn't eliminate the possibility of you needing to upgrade some software to open the files. Check that first; that's always going to be a factor in deciding to upgrade OS X, since it could cost quite a bit.
If that's not a problem, then it could indicate a problem with installing Snow Leopard, in which case you can try reinstalling it. Before you do that, you should try creating a new user account on that machine and testing to see if you can open any of those files without a problem. If you can, that indicates the problem is specific to your regular account, and not a system issue.
As for your backup, how did you create it: with SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or similar software, or did you just do a Finder copy from the Mac to the bacup drive? -

Can I recover lost library from Windows backup file after hard drive crash?
I'm sure this has been visited before, so I'm sorry if this is redundent.
My daughters Windows notebook had to be reformatted because of a severe virus. I had all important files including iTunes songs backed up onto portable Hard Drive. Got her notebook up and running and then restored her songs back to her computer (but not into the original location). Plugged in her iPod Mini and now it shows no files at all on the Mini and iTunes will not access or recognize the songs that I restored
Prior to the restoring she was able to listen to her complete music collection on the iPod Mini.
I still have access to the backup files either on the Hard Drive or in a separate folder from which I restored the first time. Should I completely erase the songs from the notebook now and then access the backup file?
And how do I get the Mini and iTunes to recognize the music once and for all?
Thanks for any advice, help, and suggestions.
Tony
HP Pavilian Notebook Windows XP iPod Mini. What you will do depends on if you have the "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file on backup. By default this file is stored on
C (Or the drive windows is on)/documents and settings/............/My Documents/My Music/iTunes
If you DO have this file on backup, then you will have to set all the music to its EXACT location it was before reformatting -

Have you changed or used any other tape as it could be because of faulty/damaged tape .

when attempting to restore a backup file to a SQL database file the restore failed and the error message referenced that the backup was from a "different" database. Trying to restore a damaged database file created in the same version of
SQL 2005. Any suggestions that would "allow" the restore to work are appreciated.the error message referenced that the backup was from a "different" database.
When you try to restore to a different database, then you have to use the option "Overwrite existing database (WITH REPLACE)", otherwise you get this error message; it's a kind of protection, see also

Restore bkf Backup Files on Tape with Windows Server 2008 R2
We have to migrate an application from a legacy server (OS Windows Server 2003) to a new server (OS Windows Server 2008 R2).
Due to legal obligations we have to keep backups for 10 years. Until now NTBACKUP was used to store the data on tape.
We must be able to restore data from tapes of the last 10 years for audit purposes.
We installed Update für Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB974674) containing NTBackup-RestoreUtility on the new server.
It seems that this tool is not able to restore from tapes.
How can we fullfil the legal requirements to restore backuped data from tape on Windows Server 8 R2 (and in future with Windows Server 2012 R2)?Hi,
This is Exchange server forum. Actually, we have a dedicated support team regarding the Microsoft Windows Server. I recommend you ask your question on our Windows Server forum which is staffed by more experts specializing in this kind of problems. Thanks

I understand that you are not able to make the recovery media.
Are you using recovery media creation?
Here is a link to walk you through the steps to create the recovery media.
The flash drive that you are using needs to be empty and may need to be reformatted before you can make the recovery media.

Why are sparsebundles used when remote Macs backup to my external drive?
At one time I was moving my external G-Drive from my iMac to Macbook so that both computers could use Time Machine to backup. Now I figured out that my MacBook can "see" the drive when it's connected to my iMac and backup to it. The strange thing is, now the Macbook saves its data as a sparsebundle, instead of creating a folder with the various backups like it once did. Is this a good thing? Will it no longer create multiple backups for each week? What if I needed a file in the backup from two weeks ago?
Please help.
Thank you.polishedstaple wrote:

When the drive is connected directly, the "Star Wars" display won't see a sparse bundle. To view the backups in such a case, you'll have to manually mount the sparse bundle (by double-clicking it via the Finder), and use the +*Browse . . .+* option, per #17 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
The way you were backing-up, Time Machine put the backups for both Macs in the Backups.backupdb folder. To view those backups, you'll have to connect the drive directly.
Note that when Time Machine runs out of room for new backups of the MacBook, it won't delete the oldest backups of it from the Backups.backupdb folder. So at some point you'll need to delete the old backups from that set manually. See #12 in the FAQ. -
Time Machine: backup files and erase drive
My 1TB external Time Machine HDD is nearly full. I’ve backed up up the last two years of Documents and Pictures files from Finder on another external drive, so Is there a way to find the latest TM versions of Documents and Pictures file on the HDD, restore them to my desktop to make sure I didn’t miss anything in the backups, and then wipe the TM disc and start fresh?
Ok, here goes:

Not able backup files to tape more than 8GB
while trying to backup a file more than 8GB using tar to tape i am getting too large to archive in solaris 10 sparc , i have tried using E option & gtar but same result
What the tape size you are using? If the tape capacity is only 8 GB you will not able to write a 8 GB backup into it.

Transfer windows backup files from external drive
I just converted to a MacBook Pro after my PC died. I backed up everything to an external hard drive using Windows Backup and it looks like everything is contained in zip files. Is there a way to transfer my documents, photos, and videos from the external hard drive without going through each individual zip file??? I contacted Apple Support and they didn't have a clear answer for me on what I should do.
Thank you both, Elliot Jordan & d6d24r94 for your very quick answers! I've actually opted to try the move of the entire folder to Trash and am in the process of emptying it now. It is slow, with thousands of files being deleted, but it seems to be working very well. I had Googled first for an answer and had been put off shifting to Trash but it the easiest method - not being so savy and all.

How to reconnect Time machine to backup file on hard drive
How do I reconnect my Time Machine to the Backups.backupdb on a hard drive? Time Machine got set to a new drive but I want to return to the older backup.

If you want to back up to the old drive, just select that drive via +Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.+
But if you just want to view or restore from the old backups, and not back up to them, use the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). -
Determining the Size of a Time Machine Backup File
When I highlight a Time Machine backup file and then click on Get Info under File to determine the size of the backup file, the disk drive works its heart out, but the Get Info window never arrives at a determination of the file size being seemingly stuck in the "calculating size" state.
Anybody have an idea of what's going on?
JohnnySJohnnyS wrote:
Regarding your statement: "If you Enter Time Machine (the "Star Wars" interface), from a Finder window with a "size" column, then browse your backups, you should be able to see the sizes easily." - what do you mean by the "Star Wars" interface?
Ah, you are new to Time Machine. Sorry, that's how you view and restore from your backups. Hold your mouse down on the TM icon in your Menubar and select +*Enter Time Machine,+* or click the TM icon in your Dock, or the +*Time Machine+* app in your Applications folder.
If I look at the pull-down menu under Finder, I do not see Enter Time Machine. Am I looking in the wrong place? Obviously, since I couldn't get by the first step, I never got to a "size" column, and to be honest, I don't know that I have ever seen a Finder window with a "size" column.
You can add one, by selecting View > as List, then View > Show View Options in a Finder window's menubar, and select or de-select whatever columns you want.
I'm a little embarrassed by my lack of knowledge, but if I don't acknowledge my shortcomings, I'll never get the question answered. Thanks for taking your time to try to help me.
Don't be. We all started at zero at one time or another.
I'm not sure just what you were looking for in your first post. The size of all your TM backups is just the amount used on your external disk, unless you have other data in the same partition (which isn't a good idea). Because of the way TM works, you can't really determine the size of an individual backup, and it really wouldn't mean much.
Perhaps if you clarified just what you want to know, we can help answer it.

BRtools Two-Phase-Backup to remote disk and remote tape drive
Hello,
i want to two-phase-backup a SAP-System to a remote disk and from there to a tape drive.
Backup to remote disk works fine, but can i use brtools to write the backup-files from the remote machine to a tape drive that is connected to the remote machine?
I'm using SLES 10 on both machines.
I can't find anything on the SAP Documentation to this. It ist possible to backup to remote disk and to remote tape, but it is not clear that it works when in Phase 1 of the backup the files are written to a remote disk. It seems like i can only tell brtools to backup the files from a local disc to a remote tape-drive, is this right?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards
PhilHi Nirmal,
thanks for your answer.
But i can do disk to tape Backups, when i choose "Backup of Disk Backup" from BRtools, i see a list of all Backups i wrote to the local disk and can write them to remote tape by using pipe as backup device.
The only thing is, my Backups are stored on a remote disk, and from there it seems i have to write them to tape with cronjobs using a shell script. That's not my favourite solution, but it's ok.
Regards
Phil
