Remote use of iTunes via Airport

What's the best way to play music stored in iTunes from the location where my stereo is? As the two systems are on different floors, I would like to access iTunes from where my stereo is (i.e. select songs, playlists, internet radio etc.). Is anybody aware of a device that allows me to do this in an elegant way via the AirPort Extreme?

If you plug your Airport Extreme into your stereo, then all you need is something to control iTunes remotely. The Keyspan Remote will work, but that requires line-of-sight and you won't get any feedback to allow you to browse your library.
I use a Palm T3 (bluetooth enabled) PDA with Salling Clicker software. If you have a Bluetooth mobile phone that will work too. All you will then need is a Bluetooth module for the Mac that has iTunes on it.
BTW Salling Clicker cannot change or select the speakers that iTunes feeds the audio to. You need to select this manually.

  • Play iTunes via airport express?

    Hello
I have a couple old airport expresses with a 1/8 in output to play music received from iTunes wirelessly. BUT, AirPort utility won't recognize either airport express (I have depressed the reset button on each for 30 seconds) and I see no option for remote speakers in iTunes.
Is there anyway to play iTunes music through airport express? Is there another way?
    Thanks

  • No preferences for Epson R1800 when used direct or via AirPort Express

I have recently purchased a MacbookPro. I have plugged in my R1800. I have installed the latest drivers from Epson's website. I have also followed instructions on this forum saying to reset the printers and reboot. Then install the drivers again.
I can print on my R1800 either by plugging it in direct or using it through the AirPort Express but it only prints in very low quality. I cannot get into and printing preferences to select paper type, print quality......etc.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can solve it. It's driving me crazy!

Don't worry, i've sorted it. Updated the software for the AirPort Express an it's all working lovely. Nice bit of kit when it's working. Wish i'd updated the software a couple of hours ago.

  • Lost ability to access iTunes via Airport after Force Quit - Network issue?

I am not sure if this is iTunes or networking related, but all other networking appears ok.
First my setup: multiple machines use iTunes library from an external HD connected to Airport Extreme, OS 10.4.11, iTunes 7.6.2.
I had been updating ratings in the iTunes library on the external drive connected to the AE and I was connected to the AE via Ethernet with Airport Card on PB turned off. I went to move the PB to another location so I turned Airport Card on and disconnected the Ethernet cable with the iTunes app and database open (dumb move apparently). The iTunes app appeared to lock up along with the PB, I was able to force quit thru it, and now I have an unresolved issue that has me stumped.
After numerous restarts of the PB, I can access the iTunes library on this AE server via the ethernet connection (as it was before attempting to move), and all of the ratings I had changed appear to have been saved. But I can not get iTunes to access the library via wireless (Airport Card).
I have restarted the AE and the connected drive both. I have restarted the PB numerous times. If I login on PB with ethernet connected there is no issue, if I login with airport active only there is an issue. All attempts to start iTunes and accessing the library wirelessly result in no success, sometimes can quit normally, sometimes must force quit. I can option start iTunes to access/create library on internal drive and also can create a new library on the external AE server. Also all other wireless networking activity regarding that server has no issue (access , copy, move files etc...)
I've tried removing iTunes pref files in user library and that didn't fix anything. The application itself works fine with the database when connected via ethernet or with internal library.
Anyone have any clues or suggestions on where I should turn to try and fix this? I can try to provide more details if needed, but I am stumped short of potentially aggravating the issue with re installs and other potential attempts that may not even be related to the issue.
    Thanks

No disk maintenance recently. I have a week old backup of the entire iTunes folder along with the Library. I tried moving that backup Library (file only) into the AE server location but that did not change anything in terms of access.
I am on lunch break so no time to try your suggestions immediately, but will later this evening. I had thought about trying with a new user but hadn't gone there yet. I also have a G4 iMac ethernet connected all the time to the AE, but it has a AE card also typically not in use. I tried accessing with the iMac machine wirelessly, and although it progressed further (got the iTunes menu bar to display - never even got that on the PB), iTunes was not able to load which makes it almost seem not machine specific but rather something with the AE settings or the usb connected drive, but again all is fine there via ethernet.
Last night after original post, on the PB, I thought about a corrupted keychain type thing perhaps not allowing file access wirelessly, and I did have something to repair there, but it did not solve the issue.
Again, thanks for the suggestions and I'll try later tonight. Let me know if my additional info sheds any further light or if it would indicate that the suggestions were on the wrong track.

  • Cannot hear my remote speakers in itunes thru Airport Express?

Anyone have this problem, I set up my Airport Express last week and everything worked correctly. I was able to set up a network, print and listen to music wirelessly. However, over the weekend since installing itunes 8, my remote speakers wont work with the airport express. i keep getting (unknown error -15000} and my speakers seem to make a crackle. Im still able to get to the web, and print on my AE. Ive checked all the problems, everything is plugged in, i reset up the network, used the airport utility, the AE is still in the same place , it has not been moved. At bottom of itunes, it says it will play music thru AE and not computer. Please help If I cant play my itunes wirelessly, my new macbook is almost useless.

i'm having the same problem, there used to be an icon in the lower right hand corner to connect to my airport express and it doesn't exist anymore, i tried shutting down, unplugging and plugging the airport express back in, but i still have no option to send music to it. any luck with yours?

  • Printer used to work via airport and now it doesn't

    Hi there -
I have an imac and a macbook on 10.4.11. Recently I had to upgrade my AT&T modem because they said it was outdated. After installation of the modem, I can no longer get my HP 3310 to print.
I've tried re-setting up the printer via its Wireless Setup Wizard. I then tried to get the imac to recognize it but it will not. I then went on line and after uninstalling the old HP driver, installed
a new one and that didn't work either. On the macbook where no prefs were changed, the HP 3310 shows up in the printer window but when I try to print it just chugs away and eventually says, "printer stopped".
I've trashed the HP prefs in the library and restarted the imac to no avail as well. Does anyone
know what would cause this to happen once a new modem is installed? I'm assuming it's modem related but have no idea how to fix it. In addition, AT&T says since it's not the printer and airport are not their equipment, they can't help me.
ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Might try these two...

  • PC used to print via Airport...but no more

I'm a bit challenged with this technology...here goes:
I have a G4 with Airport Extreme - works fine. internet, printing, also works with airport express. My children used to bring their pc's over and had no trouble going onto the internet (using my network password). Nor did they have trouble printing. Now....they can't print anymore! It seems very strange. We've downloaded the drivers (for the printer) multiple times, they are definately on the pc's.
I don't know how to set the pc up with bonjour...maybe that is where I need to start?
We don't want to buy an application (networkmagic or tech.ifelix.net) if we can avoid that.

  • Streaming itunes audio via airport express to TV speakers

Using imac, itunes and airport express.
I am trying to utilize tv audio component to play music as remote speaker using itunes and airport express.
With the tv on and approriate component selected - no sound. If I turn off TV and then back on - I get about 3 seconds of music via airport exp connection then silent.
    Any suggestions?

I have connected airex to a sony mfm-ht205 lcd tv/display. I have used the airex monster cables stereo to dual-rca connectors to connect to tv.
The tv has 2 video and 1 component set of jacks. Each of these has audio red/white right/left jacks for audio cords (presumably the dual end of monster cable).
With tv off and airex connected, when I turn tv on I get music from itunes (via airex) on tv speakers for about 3 seconds then nothing.
    Thanks for response.

  • Wireless Speakers via Airport Express

I have two sets of powered speakers which I play my music from iTunes via Airport Express units. My issue is after months of excellent sound and no problems, it appears I am now losing connection to the speakers which means the music stops and starts, VERY frustrating....! The internet connection via the Airport Express units is not a problem, just the music.
Has anyone had similar problems and is there an answer...??????

  • Using Bose system to drive remote speakers via Airport Express / iTunes

I want to connect my Airport Express which is configured for remote speakers in iTunes to my Bose system. My question is which input on the Bose Lifestyle 50 system do I use; ie which input on the "multi-room interface" do I connect to the AE. I think it must be the "aux" but before I buy a suitable cable I would like to be sure.

Use a mini-jack to double RCA. That is all that I used. In the past I have used my APExpress and used the audio out port and all I needed was a mini-jack to double RCA.I have a TV, and a DVD player interfaced through my Denon AVR driving Bose Acoustimass 10 speakers.

  • When playing iTunes from 2006 MacBook via Airport Express remote stereo speakers, the music keeps dropping in and out

I've tried hours and a trip to the Apple Store to resolve this problem, and no luck so far.
We have two Airport Expresses -- one is an older "g" version (from 2006), one is a newer "n" version (a couple of years old).
We have one older MacBook (from June 2006) (so it can only use "g" wireless and also cannot be upgraded to OS X 10.7 "Lion").
We have one MacBook Air and an iMac (both less than a year old), an iPad (about 2 months old), and a recently acquired AppleTV (in the past few weeks).
We also have two iPhones that do use our local wireless network on occassion.
We have stereo speakers that are currently connected into one of the Airport Expresses.
For years (until the past few weeks) I played music from iTunes on my first generation MacBook to the speakers with no problems (using the older "g" Airport Express).  Recently, however, when playing music remotely over the speakers we have gotten fairly regular (though at random intervals) drops of the music in and out (drops are for a second or two each).  So far, here's what we've tried to do:
    (1)     Went to the Apple Store, where they thought the problem might be compatability between the g and n equipment in our house.  They suggested that we get an Airport Extreme and use that as the base so that 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz networks could each be set up, allowing the two systems to play nicely.  Spent a couple of hours setting everything up.  No dice.
    (2)     The skipping happens even when (a) I turn off the Apple TV; and/or (b) turn off the older Airport Express and just use the Extreme and the "n" Express (with the "n" Express as the connection to the stereo).
    (3)      When I have the wireless network drop-down menu selected on my MacBook, the skipping occurs immediately after the computer is "looking for networks" (as shown at the top of the menu).  The computer does this at random intervals on a regular basis.  The skipping, however, will occur even if the menu is not selected.
    (4)     Here's the weirdest part.  The skipping has even occured when playing iTunes from our newish iMac, with the older MacBook shut down, with the older Airport Express shut down.  In this case, the skipping only appears to occur when we have the wireless network drop-down menu selected and again, it occurs when the computer is "looking for networks" which occurs at random intervals.  In this situation, the skipping only seems to occur when the menu is selected.
At this point, if I can't find another solution, I'm going to return the Airport Extreme, and just give up playing music over our stereo speakers from the MacBook (and instead transfer music to the iMac and play from it).  But I thought I'd try a last-ditch effort to ask for help to see if anyone could figure out what might be causing the problem.  I would chalk it up to the problems of using my old "g" network MacBook on a newer "n" system (though I'm not about to spend $1K+ to upgrade my laptop just for this), but for (4) above, which seems to indicate something else is going on.
Any help would be most appreciated!

Unfortunately, your description of the problem and the placement of both your main and AirPort Express routers does lend itself to believe the problem is most likely Wi-Fi interference. If it isn't the microwave or portable phones, it could be obstacles like walls between the routers that may be preventing the stream from consistently reaching the Express.
In your configuration, the stream will first travel to the main router, and then, from the main router to the AirPort Express. If, for example, you started the stream in the same room as the Express, that stream would have to travel across several rooms at least twice.

  • Cannot open/rename/use files on remote drive via Airport Extreme

Bit of a weird one this.
I've not used my remote drive - connected to the Airport Extreme base station - for some time. I often connect the drive directly to the Mac by USB just because it's quicker, then reconnect to the base station afterwards.
Today I tried and while it seemed to copy files OK from my desktop on to the remote drive, the files on the remote drive were missing the correct icons, would not open and I could not rename them or copy them back, e.g.:
    http://img.skitch.com/20091102-85c7x26ta9kr831ndjqrfhb2y3.gif
I looked at the drive info and it was showing 'No Access'. Tried changing that to Read/Write but it reset every time:
    http://img.skitch.com/20091102-gekciqehai1mf5eu3h779b44iw.gif
I also checked the disk settings in Airport utility, and it's set to secure with Airport Extreme Password:
    http://img.skitch.com/20091102-8djy7ehej684u2eg7sk1b7871n.gif
Can anyone tell me what permissions (presuming this is what it is) I need to change where, or what else I have to do to solve this. Without harming the existing data, of course!
    Thanks

You should set a password on the drive and not the device. Example: your AirPort Device Password will allow anyone that has the AirPort Utility to have access to your Device. There is an option, on the AirPort device, once you click on the hard drive, where you can set a password on the drive. That way you don't give out your administrative password of your device.
Device does not mean Hard Drive, it is your AirPort Device.

  • Sound of movies purchased in the iTunes store via Airport Express?

    Hi!
Yet another question: I regularly rent movies at the iTunes store and enjoy viewing. However, some movies, particular those with an emphasis on music, I prefer to get the sound via my stereo equipment which has an Airport Express attached.
I tried with Airfoil but this was very unsatisfactory since the sound is 1 to 2 seconds delayed from the movie - very annoying. I am almost sure that there is a way to feature the movies' sound from iTunes via the stereo sind this also easily possible with music via iTunes .... Any clues?

Look in your Airfoil help file to learn how to use the Airfoil Video Player, a free accompaniment built right into Airfoil. It's a simple video player that enables you to play video on your Mac and transmit the audio to remote speakers in sync! Note that because Airfoil Video Player delays video to sync with remote audio playback, it's recommended only for use in conjunction with Airfoil.
You can find Airfoil Video Player right inside of Airfoil, by selecting it from the Source menu at the bottom of the main window.
