RemoteFX-USB-Redirecton CD-Writer Server 2012 R2

Hi everybody,
today I want to ask you a question about RemoteFX USB Redirection. In this scenario I want to burn a CD or DVD on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Terminalserver with my external USB-CD-Writer using RemoteFX.
RemoteFX is available on the Terminalserver and my Client (Windows 8.1 Pro) is configured with the following Reg-Key.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2653326
CD-Writer ist available on the RDP-Session but the Hardware is locked in Device Manager with "The Device cannot start. (Code 10) STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE".
Does anyone have an idea?
Greetings Wolfgang

Hi,
As per my research, the error which you are facing is a very generic message that indicates some kind of unspecified driver or device problem. You may have corruption or issues with driver.
Firstly I want you to check the hardware part for the device and then please try to uninstall the related driver and then reinstall the latest updated available driver for your External CD-Writer device.
Moreover, you can also contact the device seller (CD-Writer seller) for more details regarding device.
More information:
Fix: "This device cannot start" Code 10 error in Device Manager in Windows
Hope it helps!
Thanks,
Dharmesh

  • RemoteFX issue when running Multipoint Server 2012 Premium as VM on Hyper-V

I have a server setup running Hyper-V 2012.  I made a Multipoint 2012 Premium VM and added RemoteFX.  After installing I went to Device Manager on the VM and noticed that the display adapter was showing as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and
there was an unknown device which I assume is the RemoteFX 3D adapter.  I updated the integration services and ran Windows Updates, but still cannot get RemoteFX to show up properly in the VM.
Does Windows Multipoint Server 2012 not support RemoteFX when running as a VM?  I can't really run this on bare metal since I am looking at supporting more than 20 stations and therefore would need to run multiple instances virtualized on
    the same server running Hyper-V.

The server I have setup for this test is a Dell R720 and the video card is an AMD FirePro S7000. I am using the latest stable AMD FirePro driver (ver. 13.352.1006.1001).
I also went ahead and setup a Dell OptiPlex 7010 with an AMD Radeon 5450 (which is DirectX11).  I setup Server 2012 Hyper-V and again with Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V.  Both times I was unable to add the RemoteFX 3D adapter.  I am beginning to
think that it is not possible.
Are you running Multipoint 2012 server virtualized on top of Hyper-V with RemoteFX enabled in the virtualized server (and showing so in Device Manager)?

    Best Regards,
    Abby_Doc

    Hi Abby_Doc,
Regarding to this issue, generally some application is causing sharing violation on files. Then backup fails to access those files. Such as some
Antivirus program and so on. Please temporarily disable antivirus program and monitor if this issue still persists.
Meanwhile, you can perform a clean boot in Windows to eliminate software conflicts that occur when you backup.

In addition, the Process Monitor will help us to find out which file was actually locked. You can download from following link.

  • RemoteFX Server 2012 R2 (Not Working?)

    Hi Guys,
I have a 2012 server r2 for testing, trying to get a smooth connection. We have fixed one issue by enabling UDP, and I can now confirm this is working. However, the connection locally (100mbit) when playing youtube videos still seems to be laggy.
Am I missing something? RemoteFX is on by default in 2012.
The only thing I can find is in the Event Log I have the following:
"The connection is not using advanced RemoteFX RemoteApp Graphics"
Is there anyway I can work out if it's working correctly?

    Hi,
Firstly, I would like you to check the version of graphics card you are using for RemoteFX feature. To get full benefits of RemoteFX on server 2012 R2, you must requires a compatible graphics card. At a minimum, the requirements for graphics cards to be used
    with RemoteFX are:
    -  DirectX 11.0 or later
    -  WDDM 1.2 driver or later
    More information:
GPU Requirements for RemoteFX on Windows Server 2012 R2
In addition, there are policy settings with which you can try to configure RemoteFX graphics with server scalability or bandwidth usage. You can change for “Configure RemoteFX Adaptive Graphics” under below mention
    path:
ComputerConfiguration\AdministrativeTemplates\WindowsComponents\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment
    Additional Information:
RemoteFX Adaptive Graphics in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Server 2012 - Windows 8 RemoteFX USB Redirection not working

I have setup a test envrionment with Server 2012.  RDS has been installed.  Hyper-V, RDCB, RDWeb, and RDVH are all on the same box.  I have a personal unmanaged Remote Desktop Virtual pool with one test virtual running Windows 8.  I have
enabled RemoteFx USBdirection in Group Policy on every machine involved and forced GP update.
I can see my devices in the Remote Desktop Connection details on the client (i.e. it shows up under Local Resources/Local devices and resources/More/Other supported RemoteFX USB devices.  Or, if you prefer, I have added  "usbdevicestoredirect:s:*"
to the .rdp file that the Web Access spits out then I log in to web page and attempt to connect to my published virtual machine.
The problem is that the devices do not show up anywhere in the virtual machine's device manager once logged in.  Furthermore, there is no Universal Serial Bus node in device manager at all.  I do not have a RemoteFX compatible GPU available for
hyper-v or the virtual machine, but it is my understanding with Server 2012 and Windows 8 this is not necessary.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I thought I saw a [email protected] or similar email on one of the blog comments, but I can seem to find the post again, I have scoured the internet relating to usb redirection and remotefx and it is a disorganized mess.
    Thanks.
    Wayne

The first device I am focusing on is a desktop scanner, an Epson GT-S50.  This device shows up in the client's Remote Desktop Connection details as a "RemoteFx Other supported RemoteFX USB Devices".
Although, and perhaps I'm a total fool, but, I have not installed Epson's specific drivers for this scanner on either the client, nor the VM.  My client's Device Manager currently shows the scanner under "Other Devices" as "Epson Scanner".  The
Device Status says that "The drivers for this device are not installed".  My expectation was that this was still enough to redirect the same object (and its condition) to the VM.  At that point, I expected the VM to see and respond
(in its own Device Manager) the same way, at which point I would then install the Epson-specific driver package on the VM (i.e. without ever having to install the Epson package on the client).
The second device I wanted to test was a Ezurio BRBLU03 Bluetooth Adpater.  This device's drivers have been installed on the client and works flawlessly, locally.  However, this device is not showing up at all under "RemoteFx Other supported
RemoteFX USB Devices", even after "usbdevicestoredirect:s:*" was specified.  I suppose this is a separate issue, and I was planning on troubleshooting this next.  For now I just wanted to see a proof of concept that a device that RD can see can in
    fact be redirected.
I guess I have based my expectations on the experience we had with a third-party USB redirection tool that we tested prior to engaging in testing RDS.
My client is running Windows 8 Enterprise, and the VM (vhdx) is running the same.  When you refer to the RDC 8 update, isn't that already included in this OS?  In other words, is that only a concern if I were using Windows 7?
    Thanks for your help.

  • USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices",
I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.
Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted
USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.
Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the
    VM to a VHDX file.
    On the Host:
Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking
(USB to PC) is not enabled.
    Enabled RemoteFX.
In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:
    WPD "{eec5ad98-8080-425f-922a-dabf3de3f69a}";
    Windows Mobile "{6AC27878-A6FA-4155-BA85-F98F491D4F33}";
    USB Device "{88BAE032-5A81-49f0-BC3D-A4FF138216D6}";
    Windows CE USB Device "{25dbce51-6c8f-4a72-8a6d-b54c2b4fc835}";
    GUID_DEVINTERFACE_USB_DEVICE "{A5DCBF10-6530-11D2-901F-00C04FB951ED}"
    Ran "sfc /scannow"
    All Microsoft Updates are current.
    What am I missing?

I hope it's something like that. Those features have been installed.  Here's what PowerShell shows is installed:

  • Windows 7 (Ent) Sp1 on server 2012 R2 HyperV, RFX USB redirection not working

    Hello,
I currently have  windows server 2012 R2 with HyperV installed. I have built two virtual machines. A windows 8.1 and Windows 7 sp1. Both are enterprise editions
For RemoteFX the hypervisor is using a Zotec GTX 760 GPU. It recognizes it and uses it to apply remoteFX adapter on my Windows 7 Sp1 VM.
As you are aware I do not need to use a GPU to enable RFX on my Windows 8.1 it can do this without the need of a GPU.
Using an RDP client( v8.1)  I can connect to my Windows 8.1 VM with a USB headset, memory Key or a printer and they all enumerate on the Virtual machine. The driver for each device installs
and I can use the device without any issues.
However this issue lies with the Windows 7 SP1 VM. I can connect to it via RDP( Same client)  but I cannot redirect any devices to it. I have installed the latest integration services available on the VM. I have ran all updates available.
Because I have ran all updates the rdp version on the VM is running v8.1.
Previous to installing the updates USBr still was not working
I have enabled the following group polices under remote desktop services on the Windows 7 SP1 VM :
    RDP 8.0 -- Enabled
    Configure RFX -- Enabled
Is there a known issue with USB redirection not working on a Windows 7sp1 virtual machine hosted on server 2012 Hypervisor ??
    Many Thanks
    Brian

    Hi,
According to the log above, I found that we run the script on both Server6 and Server7. Errors as below:
Server6: Conversion is not supported in restricted language mode or a Data section.
Server7: Couldn't figure out valid servers from the specified destination scope. Check your parameters and try again.
Since we can only run the RollAlternateserviceAccountPassword.ps1 Script on CAS server, the script not works well if Server6 is MBX server.
For Server7, based on the error message, it seems you still have no right to run the script/cmdlet.
Please add your account to Organization Management Role group(ADUC->domain.com->Microsoft Exchange Security Groups) to test if possible.

  • Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Block USB Storage devices @ User Level Not getting applied on a Domain Client machine with Windows Server 2008 R2. Why?

    Hello,
    I have a Windows Server 2012 R2.
I have configured the Group Policy on it to block the usage of USB - Storage Devices @ user level on the client machines. It works properly for my Windows 7 client machines but it's not working on one of the machine having Windows Server 2008 R2 installed
on it (this machine is also a domain client in the same domain).
I will really be thankful if anyone can suggest some solution to this issue.
Please feel free to write back in-case I have missed anything obvious to be shared.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - iSCSI SAN - All Hyper-V Guests stops responding and extensive disk read/write

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.
    Our setup:
Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.
HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to Virtual Machines and Management, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage. - This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM, 1 NIC dedicated to Virtual Machines and Management, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage. - This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched of.
    iSCSI SAN:
    QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.
    Switch:
DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.
    Virtual Machines:
    3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
    Updates
We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, WMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.
    Normal operation
Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with 2 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally
we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair
    Our Problem
Our problem is that for some reason all of the VMs stops responding or responds very slowly and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
Symptoms (i.e. this happens, or does not happen, at the same time)
I we look at resource monitor on the host then we see that there is often an extensive read from a VHDX of one of the VMs (40-60 Mbyte/s) and a combined write speed to many files in \HarddiskVolume5\System Volume Information\{<someguid and no file extension>}.
    See iamge below.
The combined network speed to the iSCSI SAN is about 500-600 Mbit/s.
When this happens it is usually during and after a VSS ShadowCopy backup, but has also happens during hours where no backup should be running (i.e. during daytime when the backup has finished hours ago according to the log files). There is however
not that extensive writes to the backup file that is created on an external hard drive and this does not seem to happen during all backups (we have manually checked a few times, but it is hard to say since this error does not seem leave any traces in event
    viewer).
We cannot find any indication that the VMs themself detect any problem and we see no increase of errors (for example storage related errors) in the eventlog inside the VMs.
The QNAP uses about 50% processing Power on all cores.
We see no dropped packets on the switch.
(I have split the image to save horizontal space).
Unable to recreate the problem / find definitive trigger
We have not succeeded in recreating the problem manually by, for instance, running chkdsk or defrag in VM and Hosts, copy and remove large files to VMs, running CPU and Disk intensive operations inside a VM (for instance scan and repair a database file).

Why does all VMs stop responding and why is there such intensive Read/Writes to the iSCSI SAN?
Could it be anything in our setup that cannot handle all the read/write requests? For instance the iSCSI SAN, the hosts, etc?
What can we do about this? Should we use MultiPath IO instead of NIC teaming to the SAN, limit bandwith to the SAN, etc?

    Hi,
    > All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
If this is a testing environment, it’s okay, but if this a production environment, it’s not recommended. Fixed VHDs are recommended for production instead of dynamically expanding or differencing VHDs.
Hyper-V: Dynamic virtual hard disks are not recommended for virtual machines that run server workloads in a production environment

    > This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
According to your posting, we know that you have Cluster Shared Volumes in the Hyper-V cluster, but why not distribute your VMs into two Hyper-V hosts.

    > 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage.
Use Microsoft MultiPath IO (MPIO) to manage multiple paths to iSCSI storage. Microsoft does not support teaming on network adapters that are used to connect to iSCSI-based storage devices. (At least it’s not supported until Windows Server 2008 R2. Although
Windows Server 2012 has built-in network teaming feature, I don’t article which declare that Windows Server 2012 network teaming support iSCSI connection)

    > I have seen using MPIO suggests using different subnets, is this a requirement for using MPIO
    > or is this just a way to make sure that you do not run out of IP adressess?
What I found is: if it is possible, isolate the iSCSI and data networks that reside on the same switch infrastructure through the use of VLANs and separate subnets. Redundant network paths from the server to the storage system via MPIO will maximize availability
and performance. Of course you can set these two NICs in separate subnets, but I don’t think it is necessary.
    > Why should it be better to not have dedicated wireing for iSCSI and Management?
It is recommended that the iSCSI SAN network be separated (logically or physically) from the data network workloads. This ‘best practice’ network configuration optimizes performance and reliability.
Check that and modify cluster configuration, monitor it and give us feedback for further troubleshooting.

  • Windows Server 2012 VSS error "The system writer is missing"

    Hello All,
I have a HP server that I have just installed Server 2012 standard, SQL Server 2012 and Sharepoint 2013.
When I try to take bare metal backup I get the error: "The system writer is missing", I have tried the backup as the local admin and domain admin.
The backup will only work if I decide to back up C:, once I select "Bare Metal" or "System State" the backup fails.
I have tried this solution: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734021.aspx but have not had any luck yet.
When I run the command "vssadmin list writers" I can not see "System Writer" listed.
How can I add/turn on the System Writer?

    Hi,
The system writer fails due to the fact that the trusted installer & system accounts are missing permissions to files in the directory %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\.
To resolve this issue, please run the following commands from an administrative elevated Command Window:
    CD c:\windows\system32
    Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\* /a
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)"
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)"
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "BUILTIN\Users:(RX)"

  • Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces Simple RAID 0 VERY SLOW reads, but fast writes with LSI 9207-8e SAS JBOD HBA Controller

Has anyone else seen Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces with a Simple RAID 0 (also happens with Mirrored RAID 1 and Parity RAID 5) virtual disk exhibiting extremely slow read speed of 5Mb/sec, yet write performance is normal at 650Mb/sec in RAID 0?
    Windows Server 2012 Standard
    Intel i7 CPU and Motherboard
LSI 9207-8e 6Gb SAS JBOD Controller with latest firmware/BIOS and Windows driver.
    (4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Enterprise Hard Disk Drives HUS724040ALE640
    (4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Desktop Hard Disk Drives HDS724040ALE640
Hitachi drives are directly connected to LSI 9207-8e using a 2-meter SAS SFF-8088 to eSATA cable to six-inch eSATA/SATA adapter.
The Enterprise drives are on LSI's compatibility list.  The Desktop drives are not, but regardless, both drive models are affected by the problem.
Interestingly, this entire configuration but with two SIIG eSATA 2-Port adapters instead of the LSI 9207-8e, works perfectly with both reads and writes at 670Mb/sec.
I thought SAS was going to be a sure bet for expanding beyond the capacity of port limited eSATA adapters, but after a week of frustration and spending over $5,000.00 on drives, controllers and cabling, it's time to ask for help!
    Any similar experiences or solutions?

    1) Yes, being slow either on reads or on writes is a quite common situation for storage spaces. See references (with some of the solutions I hope):

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials will only recognize 1 USB drive at a time in primordial pool

I have a new install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. I added 2 identical 2TB Seagate Expansion USB drives. Initially they had a volume on them, so I deleted the volume in order for them to be added to the primordial pool and storage spaces,
etc. They both show up fine in Disk Management, but only 1 of them at a time will show up in the primordial pool. I have tested moving them to different USB ports, trying only 1 disk at a time to ensure that both are good, rebooted, attached them via
a USB hub... but nothing works. In my most recent test I plugged in only one and did a rescan. I see it as Disk 1 in both Disk Management and Primordial pool. Then I added the second drive and did a rescan, it showed up as Disk 2 in Disk Management
and when I did a refresh in storage spaces, I can see that it changed to only see disk 2 in the primordial pool. What can be causing this?

To use USB disks, each disk must be plugged into a differs USB controller. A hub will obviously be on one controller, so that won't work. But many computers have only one or two controllers on the motherboard and then use port multipliers (basically internal
hubs) to support more ports. So you have to know your motherboard and which ports are on which controllers. And again, only one drive per controller.

  • Server 2012 R2 Essentials Trial Installation from USB asking for Product Key

    Hi,
I've just downloaded Server 2012 R2 Essentials trial iso from Microsoft site (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials).
The downloaded iso file is 9600.16384.WINBLUE_RTM.130821-1623_X64FRE_SERVER_SOLUTION_EN-US-IRM_SSSO_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5.iso
I created a bootable USB using Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool-Installer-en-US.exe installer and it automatically copied the server 2012 files from the iso file.
Once my server (HP MicroServer) is booted up from the USB, the server 2012 installation is asking me to key in the product key.
Please, can someone help me this. I just want to install a trial version.
    Thanks in advance.

  • SYSTEM WRITER MISSING WIN SERVER 2012

    Hi,
I have installed win server 2012. On that server i have sql 2012 and sharepoint 2013. After a while my windows server backup stops working and system writer is missing now. I found that problem might be in subfolders in MICROSOFT.NET folder. It has more
than 1000 subfolders in GAC_MSIL folder. Is this really true that system writer can't enumerate more than 1000 folders and that I cant have sharepoint 2013 and sql server 2012 installed on same server. Is there a solution which can fix this or I can have all
    of that on one server?
Hope that someone can help with this.

It seems to be a known issue, some other Technet forum users have experienced the same problem.
Check this post and see the solution.
Missing VSS System Writer and CAPI2 error in Event Log
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/4458947a-623e-45c1-b8e4-868aad1e93b0
I've got this problem about a month ago. I refer to MSP.
The problem was caused due to stack full. When we list system writer using “vssadmin list writers”, it will go through all the system files. To do that, the OS use a  search algorithm with a stack which has a size limitation of 1000. When the stack
was full, it failed to continue listing files and log an event in the application event log.
In my case, the following folder contains too many subdirectory and caused the problem.
    C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\*
    1. Open C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\Web.config
    2. Add tempDirectory attribute to compilation tag. For example:
    < compilation tempDirectory="c:\ASPTEMP">
And also grant the folder with the same privilege with as “C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files”.
    3. Restart the IIS Service.
    4. Backup and delete all files under “C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files”.
    5. restart the Cryptographic Service.
    6. Try “vssadmin list writers” again.
Hopes this brings idea for you to solve it.
