RemoteFX vGPU in Windows 8 Hyper-V? (win8 on win8)

Is it possible to use the RemoteFX vGPU functionality between a Windows 8.1 x64 Hyper-V host and its Windows 7/8 guest vm? (or is this only possible with Windows server versions?)
Thanks
Mike

Thanks Brian,
There is a new synthetic GPU.
Are you referring to RemoteFX vGPU (virtual GPU), or something else?
but the feature you are asking about is server only.
Right, so it will only be available when Windows Server is the operating system installed on the "metal"?
(there have been various mentions on the net that this would be available in the Hyper-V bundled with Win8Pro as well, but that seems to be wrong then)
but, client requires SLAT to force the better graphics experience for the local vm console.
You mean the physical host CPU should support SLAT, or are you referring to some Hyper-V setting?
Best regards
Mike

    It's impossible.

  • Can't connect to the Hyper-V manager after upgrading to Windows Hyper-V 2012 R2

I have some Hyper-V server based on the free version (Windows Hyper-V 2012). I want to upgrade to the new version (Windows Hyper-V 2012 R2). So I begin to test it with
an already working server (aka I was able to totally manager the server remotely without problem) and so upgrade it to the R2.
After the upgrade, remote management and Hyper-V manager does not work anymore. So I redo my usual configuration steps (enable remote management, open firewall, uses
latest hvremote.wsf, etc.). I was able to regain access to Computer Manager but not the Hyper-V manager which still can't connect at all. I can't access the Task Scheduler too without having a lot of XML error like "The task XML contains a value which
is incorrectly formatted or out of range" (see below for screenshot).
Is there a new step to do to be able to manage Hyper-V 2012 R2 from a Windows 7 computer?
It's not a network problem as I can access RDP and MMC Computer Manager.
To be sure the problem is coming from the R2, I have taken an old computer, install Windows Hyper-V 2012, do my usual configuration step, and
tada: it works perfectly. I can access the Hyper-V manager from my client.
    Technical details:
    - Client is a Windows 7 SP1 x64 English member of a domain with latest RSAT (Windows6.1-KB958830-x64-RefreshPkg.msu).
    - Servers are in a workgroup (not a domain's member). And no, I can't add them to the same domain as the client.

    HI,
Can we upgrade HyperV 2012 to hyper v 2012 R2.
    Thanks

  • Adding Hyper-V/RemoteFX vGPU support to an installed server

I'm looking for advice from the community and/or MS support folks:
I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server installed on hardware (that supports the required VT-d, SLAT, etc features) running & stable in a single-server environment.  Now I'd need to add support for hosting Hyper-V virtual machines on the
    server.
Server 2012 apparently does not allow installing Hyper-V server directly onto the server when the server is the PDC.  There seems to be two primary ways to slice this server into virtualized units.
    1) Implement a hyper-visor 'under' the existing OS:
My understanding is that the my R2 Essentials license allows me to create two instances of the server, one virtualization host and one client running on the host.  Originally I attempted to set up the server this way, but the process was non-trivial
to say the least - apparently this is really only enabled for OEMs and end-users are left to struggle with creating a custom install image.  I gave up on that due to time & technical limitations.
Is there a way of performing a 'P2V' operation on the server and installing a Hyper-V hypervisor underneath the server OS without perturbing it's running environment too much?  My guess is that hardware changes detected by the guest (server) OS will
put my storage array at risk, and I need to avoid that at all costs; are there ways to mitigate the risks?
    2) Leave the existing server as-is (not virtualized), install Hyper-V, install a 2nd copy of Server 12R2E into a VM, migrate the PDC into the VM:
Will this allow the server to host RemoteFX sessions now that it's not the PDC?
Will I encounter licensing issues when taking this path?
    3) Are people having better luck using ESXi, XEN, etc to bypass the server limitations?
    Thanks in advance,
    3Dad

    Hi 3Dad,
To install hyper-v role with Server 2012 R2 Essentials server, I recommend you can install a Hyper-v Host and migrate the Server 2012 R2 Essentials server to vm in Hyper-v.
I think you can configure RemoteFX for Hyper-V now without Active Directory Domain Controller installed:
Hyper-V: Avoid Installing RemoteFX on a Computer that is Configured
    as an Active
    Directory Domain Controller
I also find a similar disscussion about the method 1 you posted is for your reference:

Automatic provisioning of the target completes without errors, but trying to attach the debugger does not work.  It never connects.
    Am I missing something?

I am encountering the same issue debugging a KMDF driver on VS2012.   Both machines are in the same workgroup and both are running WS2012 Data Center Edition.  I tried running a command prompt and various other items on the target, but
it never connects.  I even tried running a VM on the local machine in Hyper-V.   Same issue.

  • Virutal machines on Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

    Hi,
How many Virutal Machines ( Guests)  can we create on a host with Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 installed on the host .
Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is free version from Microsoft right ?
    Thanks

What I understood from above is ,if we install the hyper-v server 2012 R2 standard version on the host, we can create only 2 windows VM's.
Not quite. There's no such thing as "Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Standard". You either install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 which is free and then license the servers you install on it separately, or you install Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Datacenter edition
    and configure Hyper-V on there.
I believe you CAN buy a licence for just a virtual machine, though it would be a bit pointless when Standard covers you for two virtual machines.
Going the free Hyper-V Server route is useful in particular if you're installing non-MS VM's which don't require MS licensing, or if you're P2Ving some existing physical servers which are already licensed.
Note, if you install a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard licence to cover two VM's then it may be worth simply installing that rather than the free version unless you really don't want the UI available on the host. A standard licence covers you for 2 servers,
and as long as the host server is doing nothing other than handle Hyper-V the copy of Standard on the host doesn't count towards it. So for instance you could have Server 2012 standard installed on the host, install the Hyper-V role on it and also install
the IIS role on there, at which point you can only have 1 VM running there on that licence, but without IIS or anything else on there you can have 2 VM's. If you need more than 2 VM's (while not needing enough to warrant the cost of Datacenter) then you can
install a second Standard licence which covers you for another two virtual machines.
    There's a guide to licensing Hyper-V here
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7%2F7%2F0%2F7707E736-4557-4310-9709-87358F7E6D1A/WindowsServer2012VirtualTech_VLBrief.pdf though as Eric said it's probably worth giving the licensing guys a call rather than putting your trust in unknown non-MS people
    on the internet! :-)

If I get new processors, do I  need to re-install the Host OS, or can we power it down, swap them out, and we’re back in business with out issue on my guest machines?

    Hi geoffcgt21,

So , you do not need to re-install the OS .

If you formatted the entire "C" drive (Format C:\) then you don't need to decrypt them but rather recover them.  Recovery is somewhat doubtful but one application you can try is called recuva.
You will not recover 100% of the files and may not recover any

  • How to make a terminal program (similar to windows hyper-terminal but more powerful)?

I am a new Labview user, Im trying to write a monitor program for use with uControllers. The main problem I cant seem to get over is to have a section of the screen where I can type in commands (that are sent only once!) then recieve a reponse from the uController directly under the command. Has anyone tried this?
I am using the VISA read/write functions for serial communications, are these interrupt driven?, does anyone have ideas on this.
    Thanks in advance
    Dave Zdanowicz

    Hi,
Doesn't your device maybe have an "echo"? Than, I guess, the easiest
way would be to have two independently running VIs, one of which is
repeatively checking the serial interace for incoming bytes and
eventually displaying them in an apropriate indicator (e.g. a string
indicator where all incoming new characters are appended to the old
string via a shift register of a loop). The other VI then could be
    responsible for sending commands.
It did something similar just resently. It works quite well. The
command sending VI had some buttons to send kind of macros (several
commands, often needed in combination, bundled together) and
furthermore checked the keyboard with the keyboard VIs from the NI
pages for additional inputs from the user, which were then just sen
    t
to the serial interface byte by byte.
