Remotely access usb western digital 2tb storage connected to airport

Hi everyone, just wanted get some feedback on this set up, if it is possible, and how to configure the settings properly. I want my Netgear n600 router Version 1 + Airport Express + WD 2tb hard drive to = a personal cloud that I can remotely access. I have a netgear n600 WNDR3400 that has a 2.4ghz and a 5.0ghz  wifi network capability. I 30-30-30 flashed the netgear n600 router so that I have dd-wrt firmware( DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/08/11) mega) running on the router instead of the restrictive built-in netgear web interface. I have an Airport Express 802.11g version 6.3 that I have connected to the netgear n600 router via ethernet cable. Connected to the airport express, via usb 2.0, is a Western Digital 2tb hard drive (externally powered). When I am booted up from the internal macbook pro hard drive mac side (I also have Bootcamp Windows 7 installed that I can boot from) my mac's time machine application starts backing up to the WD hard drive when I connect the usb hard drive to my macbook pro. The entire WD hard drive is formatted as HFS+, however I am considering partitioning the WD at least 3 ways, 1250 gigs HFS+ for mac storage, 500 gigs NFTS for windows storage, 250 gigs for unux / linux storage to host my website. I want to remotely access the WD storage space connected to the Airport Express, specifically, each individual hard drive partition based upon what remote system I am using and the respective partition storage format. If I am on a windows computer, I want to have a 500 gig "cloud" that I can access any computer via a windows Start -> Run or map the network drive. I want the same home server ability as a 1250 gig cloud that any mac can access. I want to have remote read or write priviledges when I connect to this server through the mac finder. Similarly, I want to connect through a linux terminal to have access to my 250gig partition for unix. One last thing, I want to host my website on the WD plugged into my Airport Express. Does anyone have any suggestions what dd-wrt settings I need to change to make this work? I do not understand port forwarding very well at all. I think I understand that I need to have a static ip address and then forward the ports.  I just do not know what to set my static ip to, or what settings I need to change in the dd-wrt web interface for forwarding ports. Can anyone please tell me which ports do I forward to remotely access my usb storage and personal website? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Much obliged, Keento

The Express doesn't support HDDs.

  • Why won't my Western Digital (2TB) My Book for Mac backup to time Machine?

This past fall (2012) I was notified by apple that the hard drive on my 2010 iMac might need to be replaced due to issues.  Before doing so I was prompted to back up all of my data with an external hard drive using Time Machine.  I purchased a Western Digital 2TB external hard drive and set it up easily.  The setup parameters were such that the thing should backup my iMac to Time Machine on the hour every hour.  This worked well and also allowed me to restore my user preferences for nearly everything when I got my computer back with its new hard drive.  This was around October.
Recently (mid-March), my WD My Book no longer backs up to Time Machine.  The computer recognizes the drive, allows me to access it, but will not backup to Time Machine.  I have no hypotheses as to why this has started happening, but it just did.  I have tried shutting Time Machine off and turning it back on to the particular external hard drive.  This has not worked.  I have tried to prompt a manual backup, but the computer gets stuck when preparing to back the drive up.  It never actually commences the backup.
I understand that just like anything else that things fail.  I also understand that sometimes things fail within the first few months of purchase (half a year-ish in my case).  I just cannot understand what might be causing it.  Any speculation?
Here are some screenshots associated with my current problems:

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Other solution is to buy usb2 PCMCIA adapter.
Mouse worked on laptop port but no harddrive so i think its was some power issue that laptop usb cannot give enoght power to run harddrive.

  • External FW/USB Western Digital, Seagate Disk Drives and 'Sleep' function

As you are aware, most external disk drives be they FW or USB (and irrespective of the manufacturer, save for LaCie) have a 'sleep' function built into their Firmware. In the case of the Western Digital and Seagate Ext FW drives I have, this function cannot be disabled and this per both WD and Seagate.
Unfortunately this is extremely annoying if using Photoshop and Bridge...it takes about ten seconds for each disk to spin up while the latter programs search the drives. (In Windows this can be enabled/disabled. Not so with the Mac O/S I have been told). Multiply this by six of the aforementioned drives and it can be quite time consuming.
Is there an OS-X workaround for this?
    Thanks again,
    Lyman

I always avoid vendor cases. Might want to look at an Oxford 912 etc, or better yet, why use Firewire when eSATA works so well?

  • Getting an error "Remote Access Service Error" while establishing the connection usng SonicWall Netextender.

    * Original Title: SonicWall Netextender issue with Windows 8.1
I am able to install SonicWall Netextender version 6.0.181 without any issues in my Windows 8.1 machine. When i try to establish the connection getting this error "Remote Access Service Error - Rebooting might Solve the problem".
Hope someone can help me in resolving this issue.

    Hi,
Please go to Windows Service manager, run "services.msc", then Look for the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager to see if those two services have been started. If not, set them to automatic start, reboot the machine,
    and install\configure NetExtender again.
Since this is a third party application, it's recommended to contact the application vender to check the compatibility with Windows 8.1\IE 11, because they're more familiar with the application.

  • How do I set up remote access to my HD thats hooked to New Airport Extreme

    Hi Everyone,
I want to have remote access to my hard drive which is hooked up to the USB Port on the back of the Airport Extreme. I have tried many different configurations and watched youtube videos to help me, to no avail. Apparently there are many ways to do this, but no luck!
Thanks for your help and if you have screen shots even more helpful.
I know I can't be the only one with this question and Apple doesn't make it easy since I called them and they want me to sign up for Mobile Me for $99/yr,
    Thanks in Advance,
    Robert

I should mention that its the only router I have which is hard wired via cable to modem.

  • Western digital 2TB My Passport harddrive for MAC

    Hi there
Anybody who knows whether I can use this drive as a Network Storage Link for USB along with my 1TB Time Capsule?
I need a drive where I can place all my music etc. and then access it from all my units.
    Regards Kenneth

Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Access USB Disk from Win XP connected to Router

    Hello,
My Airport express is plugged into cable modem router and so is a desktop running Win XP.
Another 2 machines Macbook and Winxp laptop can access AE router, internet and the USB disk connected to AE.
I am having trouble accessing the USB disk from desktop which does not have wifi and is hooked directly to cable modem router. I tried assigning a static IP to Airport Express and that didnt help either.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
You posted in the AirPort Extreme forum, but your post indicates that you have an AirPort Express.
If you have an AirPort Express, this device does not support hard drives at the USB port. Only compatible printers are supported.

Can I access  photos and music on my usb hard drive connected to an airport extreme using an iPhone 5? I can access theme with mac and pc.

Yes, but not out of the box. You have to download an app like FileBrowser.

  • Mount USB Ext drive that is connected to Airport Ext base sta via usb hub

My Lacie drive disappeared from the desktop after downloading a recent Mac software update. It is connected to my compter wirelessly via a usb hub connected to AirportExtreme Base Station. The only way to get it back on the desk top is to connect it directly to either th Airport base station or the laptop without going through the hub. I've tried different hubs and none works. However, all of the support the printer wirelessly. Is there another usb drive out there that works? I'm ready to dump the Lacie.
    Message was edited by: DPW1

Make sure your lacie firmware is up to date as well....I dont know which drive you have but you can visit http://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/index.htm?id=10007 to see what the latest firmware downloads are for your drive. I have an Ethernet Disk mini v2 (Gigabit) and firmware update solved access issues.

  • Trekstor pocketair wifi storage connecting with airport express

    Hey there!
Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express? I wanna use Itunes and this storage for streaming music with mit mac pro book (OS X 10.9.3)
Or is it nessaray to use a apple wifi storage like airport extreme?
    Thanks!
    Best regards
    Michael

Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express?
In theory, the Trekstor should be able to connect to an existing network either via a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. The AirPort Express, depending on the model, can supply both.
On the other hand, the Express DOES NOT support hard drives connected to its USB port; whereas, the Extreme and Time Capsule base stations do.

  • Cannot print wirelessly USB h/p Officejet 5610 connected to Airport Express

my iBook G4 is upgraded to Tiger v10.4.11. Can do successful printing tethered to USB printer. Want to print wirelessly. AirPort is active, indicator light is solid green. USB printer is plugged into AirPort Express. I clicked file, then print, then selected Bonjour printers-my printer. The iBk tried to add printer but I got the following message: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer".
Can anyone out there help me? Many thanks. gold75

Were you able to previously use that same printer via AirPort Express,
& print wirelessly, with the USB wire plugged into the AirPort base unit?
Since I have the exact all-in-one HP printer/scanner/copier/fax model
by number, and have the downloaded HP drivers (a large file) to be
up-to-date, the HP device has never worked via USB plugged into AE.
Mine is the older AirPort Express 802.11b/g. All of my Macs see and
use the Epson printer attached to my AirPort Express; and like the OP
my HP won't do anything at all and is never seen connected via USB
to the base station. So I figured it was not supported. After looking for
about a year, I found little evidence it was capable of working via wi-fi
through the USB cabling to the base station; unlike some others.
I do have an Epson 820 Photo Stylus that always works well with the
same base station via USB cable; except for the ink status utility and
cleaning head utility, these only work when attached by USB cable.
The Epson also worked well with the last model orb-shaped AirPort
Extreme base station to print via the USB port; that is a superior base
unit with more capabilities, it's the printer & drivers with limitations.
If you do get the HP 5610xi or similar all-in-one to work, note back
here what drivers and/or configuration you used to accomplish that.
An older list, unofficial, of compatible printers that had been used under
some circumstances (airport firmware updates can change this) were
noted in this web page: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html
A second page there suggests trying gimp or other drivers; the issue
in part may also be the airport firmware update in use. Printers not on
    the compatibility list: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html

  • Time Machine fails to backup HD and stalls computer when backing up to external HD (Western Digital WD5000MT) when using Firewire 800 but works fine using USB

I have a mid 2012 MBP (MacbookPro9,1) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I start a Time Machine backup to an external Western Digital HD (WD5000MT) connected using a Firewire 800 cable, my open programs stop responding and in general my computer freezes up not allowing me to open activity monitor or the console utility.  I can't even shut down or restart my computer and must hard boot to reset.  Though removing the firewire cable that goes to the external HD can sometimes get my system working again.  However, the WD external HD also has a usb port and when I connect it to my computer via a USB cable, Time Machine seems to backup my system fine without stalling my computer.  This same external HD worked fine with Firewire 800 using my old late 2007 MBP running snow leopard.  I should note that my brother has the exact same model WD external HD and he also had issues with the firewire port on his MBP running mountain lion.  I have run the disk utility checking for disk/file permission errors and the drive itself seems fine.  I initially formatted that drive as ExFAT but while troubleshooting reformatted to HFS+ and still had the same issue.  I tested using a different firewire 800 cable but still had the same issue.  Can't think of anything else to do.  I don't have another firewire-compatible device to test if it is the HD vs the firewire port.   I would prefer to use the firewire port for quicker transfer speeds but I'm stuck with USB for now.  Any suggestions?

  • Cannot use Western Digital HDD with Pismo?

    Good evening,
I am trying to use a Western Digital Passport 250GB external HDD USB with my Pismo, but it mounts the HDD, but says it is unreadable and then forwards me to the Disk Utility. It seems the HDD but I can't partition it or anything. So, I partitioned it on my G4 iMac, on which it works perfectly, and then removed it and tried to use it on the Pismo; again, no luck! Is this a fool's errand or am I doing something wrong? Please advise as I need more than the 20GB internal HDD.

    spcmiller,
I am sorry the suggestion did not work but underpowered USB ports on Mac portables is an issue with external USB HDs. You have something else going on which I cannot answer.
I would suggest posting in the Powerbook G4 (15-inch Titanium):
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=129
The Titanium also has USB 1.1 ports, has issues with USB HDs, and the forum has more activity than the Older Powerbook Computers. Also, if you wish, perform a search in the Titanium forum for 'USB western digital' for many posts. I saw none that matched your experience. When you post, I would explain that you have a Pismo and were sent to this forum for the reasons I mentioned; you can even link to this thread if you wish.
Sorry I could not solve your issue.

  • Hot to set up remote access to a DMM

    Hi all,
I'm trying to configure a remote access to a digital media manager via wan.
The problem is that when I try to redirect the nat of the local ip:port of the DMM is unable to open the web admin because of the FQDN.
Only the hostname is admited so, how can I admin my DMM when I'm not in my local network?
I get access via dmp.sumkio.local:8080 in my local network, but how can I do it from outside?
I have a Cisco UC520 like my border router.
Can I NAT a static route to a hostname?
I have a VPN created, but I want to give access to some clients to manage some of their services, so I can't give them access to all my network.
    Thanks

    Hi Pablo,
I'm afraid it's not possible to use DMM behind NAT. When you try to access, it needs to be able resolve its own FQDN to the configured IP address.
I wish I could give you a better answer
    Daniel
