Remotely editing keywords

I know that I can export my photos from iPhoto 08 to flickr, myspace, etc.; and I can add keywords and comments to them, but I have no way of getting that data off of the web, and back into iPhoto. My friends all say I'm nuts for worrying about this, because they say that flickr, myspace, etc. is so popular, it's not going to go away. While that's true, what if your account "accidently" gets deleted?
I've looked and looked, but haven't really found a way to sync keywords between a web site, and my local machine. Does anyone know if this is even possible? I'm running iPhoto 08.

The .Mac account has nothing involved in metadata. That's all taken care of with iPhoto. If you're looking to backup and save your photos the best solution, IMO, is to backup the entire iPhoto Library package to an external HD and use a backup application like Synk Standard to make incremental backups after every use of the library.
Also as a way to protect against loss of all your organizational effort due to a damaged database file see the tip at the end of my signature below.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Remotely editing text files in Windows WinRM/PSExec/Powershell/cmd

    Hi!
How can I remotely edit a text file in Windows?
I am running and administering a number of Windows 7 workstations and Windows Server 2012 machines. I would like to be able to remotely edit text files on any of these machines. I can connect to any of these machines via psexec or powershell remoting. I
can also connect via rdp, but for the workstations I would rather not kick the user off unless I absolutely have to.
For example, we manage state configuration using
Salt. Local configuration files are stored in C:/salt/conf. I would like to be able to edit these config files on the fly.
This question on Stack Overflow covers the same topic, but none of the answers are particularly satisfying. Some of the possible solutions
    are:
Remote Desktop: as I say, I would rather not have to kick a user off their workstation
Edit a file over a UNC path: this only works for files on a share, and setting up arbitrary shares for quick edits seems like a bad idea.
Install some manner of ftp or ssh server on all the target computers. This would certainly work, but it is it necessary with WinRM already active? I feel like installing and configuring extra software across all the machines in my organisation would be
    a last resort.
Edit with a command line editor (e.g. vim, emacs) over a remote powershell session. This doesn't work. I don't understand the technical details, but a powershell remote session isn't interactive in the same way that ssh connections are.
Edit using powershell's -replace operator, out-file and add-content cmdlets. This works, but is hardly the same as a fully featured text editor.
Retrieve content from the remote, edit locally, and post back to the remote. This works, and is arguably the best solution I've found. Code sample from SO:
    PS C:\Users\Meredith> Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {get-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config} > web.config
    edit web config
    PS C:\Users\Meredith> get-content web.config | Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {set-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config}
The last two options are the workflow that I've been using for now. Regex replacement for very simple changes, and copying to local and editing there for more complicated ones. Neither is ideal, but they work. It just feels incredibly old fashioned.
I'm considering writing a plugin to my editor of choice (vim) to perform the remote fetch and save, to make my workflow a little bit smoother. Before I try that, I just want to know if there's anything that I've missed, or misunderstood.
    Cheers

    What is the "redirector"?
I posted the same question to Stack Overflow, and was told about administrative shares. I wasn't aware of this, and it's exactly what I wanted. I can open the filetree of a remote machine with the path \\machinename\c$\. Perfectly simple, now that I know
    the answer.

  • Web-based API tool for remote edit videos

Hello, sorry for posting in a wrong place. I'm looking for an API for remote editing uploaded video files. Our website allows to record streams to MP4 file and storage them on our servers (mostly streamed games). Now I would like to edit this videos by simply cut (start video from here, end video here) and then export new file to Youtube. I need to do that remotly, not by additions software installed on users computers. Does anyone knows API like that? Twitch.tv has that feature, and I would like to have it too on my streamspot.tv webpage
    Thanks for help

  • Remote Editing with Premier Pro CS6

Has anyone tried remote editing with Premiere ProCS6?  I have a good rig at home and I would like to use my laptop while away to edit on the rig.  If this is possible, what programs did you use?  Thank you.

John's answer being true, if you want to use the currently exported file in some authoring software, you would ask that question of the authoring software, not the exporting software.  Meaning go to the iDVD forums (or read it's Help file) to find out how that program works.

  • Any way to globally set "edit keyword tag"

When you double click a keyword in the Keyword List, you're taken to the "Edit Keyword Tag" window, where you have several option boxes to click. Is there any way to globally set these options. For instance, I would like to always forego the option to "export containing keywords." (I'm finding it easier to click the containing keywords according to my preference, which is easy to do, since all the containing keywords appear as part of the hierarchy.)
But of course I don't want to go through each and every keyword that I already have and unclick that option. It'd be far easier to do this globally. Is that an option anywhere?
    Thanks,
    Robert

You cannot edit the items with the iPod.
You should edit them in iTunes and then sync the iPod.

  • Edit keywords whilst in full screen edit mode

    Hi all
I want to edit the keywords assigned to an image in full screen edit mode.
I have searched about a bit and have found links to Keyword Assistant which is all well and nice. It's not particularly quick to asign keywords though - my touch typing isn't all that hot. And it has a few 'quirks' which make it a little cumbersome to use.
Ideally I'd love to see a palette with keywords that can be toggled on or off for each image - brought up much like the adjust and effects palettes. I have over 15k images in this library and I'm intending to go through them all adjusting the keywords. Is there anything out there that will do something like this, within iPhoto full-screen?
    Thanks
    Flea

  • Why can't I edit keyword tag icons?

2011-05-15 - For some reason, when I attempt to change the photo that appears in the keyword tag for a given person, the button for edit icon is grayed out.  Anyone know why this is.  Is my database corrupt?

Great! This is the solution I was looking for.
    Just to clarify the method:
Select a photo with the tag you want to change the icon.
Double click it in the organizer to open it on the one photo view
Click the tag of the person that you want to change the icon
The People Recognition - Confirmation dialog opens.
    Select the confirmed tab.
Choose the photo that you want for the icon from the confirmed photos and drag over the current one, on the upper left corner of the dialog.
    Save.
    Thanks Axel.

  • Aperture crashes when editing Keyword Preset Group

When I move keywords up or down in the Contents column of the Edit Button Sets window (in order to sort them alphabetically), Aperture crashes.

can you post the crash log? Maybe it's not keywords. I tried and did not crash.

  • Editing keywords outside Aperture, safe or not?

Wanting to maker the most of keywords, and aware that they can be made almost infinitely hierarchical, I see from page 268 of the User Manual that it is in theory possible to Export the keywords from the Keyword HUD into, say, BBEdit. Then to edit them into the groups one wants, respecting the TAB conventions and re-import them once they're just as you want.
Has anyone done this? Is it really as easy as it seems? It sure would be easier than scrolling up and down inside the HUD.
But is the file which the HUD works on a simple tsv file - and not XML?
IOW, are there pitfalls, or is it what many keyword 'fanatics' do?
    TIA!

    Pretty sure it ignores it.
So say I have this in Aperture now (hierarchy)
    a->b->c
And now I edit and import this:
    a->b->c->d
The results in Aperture should reflect that, and you'll only have d added to the hierarchy.
I tinkered with this a fair bit a few months ago and was relatively comfortable that it "did the right thing."
Note, this is very easy to experiment with. Keywords follow an Aperture library. So, to eliminate any risk, create a new Aperture library, create a small keyword hierarchy, export it, edit the text file, putting new keywords all over the place, and import it and ensure all is good. I did this and was happy, but I'd say if you checked my work you'd probably be more comfortable. You know, "trust, but verify" and all that

  • Is there any way to edit keyword groups?

When I first got Aperture, I imported my iPhoto library and now I'm trying to sort out the mish mash of keywords I have between it and the new ones I've created in Aperture. I have one keyword group called "Friends" and I want to change it to "Friends and Family". However I can't see in any of the help how to edit a keyword group. Is this possible? And if not, any ideas as to what I should do? Could I just create a new one called "Friends and Family" and move the keywords under the current "Friends" to it? I.e. is it possible to drag keywords in the keywords HUD?
    Thanks, John

You can do all of that in the keywords HUD. To rename a keyword or group (still a keyword by itself) double click on it. You can drag keyworkds to re-arrange them and also drag them to the viewer/browser to apply them to images.

  • How to edit keywords in Finder?

Perhaps this is really obvious... but....
How do I edit a file's keywords? I have some PDFs, and I want to "tag" them with a keyword. I know I can open up Preview, and edit the keywords in the inspector... but how do I do it in Finder? Can I? Is there any way to tag a file?

That'll do it, yep! Thanks for the tip.
I would never have equated "spotlight comments" with the concepts of "keyword tagging" -- but whatever. It worked.
    Thanks!

  • Where are edits & keywords of my copies?

After I edit and keyword my photos I copy them, and the current catalog, onto two other drives using Windows Explorer.  When I import them into LR there's no edits or keywords.
Why doesn't this work?  If my hard drive crashes I want RAW backups with all my edits intact.  How do I do this?

The edits and keywords exist in the catalog.
If you import the images into a new catalog, you left behind al the edits and keywords in the old catalog.
You can copy all that data from one catalog to another by "export as catalog" and "import as catalog".
Copying the images and catalog is a good way to make backups. You just need to make sure that you do the copy and restore in such a way that you do not lose the relationship between the image files and the Lightroom catalog.

can I edit the site from another machine, different than the one it was first authored on? and is there anyway this could be a windows machine?
can I put a blog page on the site that can be updated by a remote user, using a secure password, accessible for them only?
many thanks, newbie questions, help much appreciated

if I make a new website in draft to show a client, can I first save it to a http address that is kind of private?
Sure, just password protect the site.
    not published to the web?
    No.
can I edit the site from another machine, different than the one it was first authored on?
Only if the other machine is a Mac running iWeb and has a copy of the Domain file for your site.
and is there anyway this could be a windows machine?
    No
can I put a blog page on the site that can be updated by a remote user, using a secure password, accessible for them only?
The only way to update an iWeb blog page is from a Mac running iWeb with a copy of the Domain file for the blog.
