Remotely wake up Mac

I am currently using my MBP and my Mac Pro. I have a second monitor connected to my MBP (along with a keyboard and a mouse), and a TV & another monitor connected to my Mac Pro (also with a keyboard and a mouse).
In an effort to clean up my desk, I have setup VNC so that I can share 1 set of keyboard and mouse and a monitor, while the Pro is still hooked up to my TV. MBP is setup as client and Pro as the server.
My problem is that I am unable to wake up my Pro from my MBP using VNC? does anyone know how to achieve this?

as rack0 tack0 says, if the computers are connnected by wired ethernet you can easily do it using wakeOnLan
http://www.readpixel.com/wakeonlan/
Snow leopard also introduced the ability (called wake on demand) to do it wirelessly if you have a Time Capsule or an Airport Extreme base Station
however, that only works on new computers and mac pro early 2008 doesn't support this feature.

  • Remotely wake other mac up with BTMM?

Hi everyone? Is it possible to wake up a remote mac via Back To My Mac? And also, is it possible to remotely reboot my home mac? Because I tryed it yesterday, and once I told it to Restart, I lost it...
    Anyway to work this out?
    Thanks a lot.

Yeah, I'm REALLY not liking this problem. Back to My Mac is pretty sweet and seems to work better/faster than my normal VNC programs. However, my Mac at home is a laptop and is set to go to sleep automatically to help save the battery. BTMM needs to be able to remotely wake the computer or it's pretty useless for me and that would be a shame. Let's put that "Wake for remote admin access" check box to good use!

  • How can I start/wake a Mac without having an XServe?

    Hey,
I just bought Apple Remote Desktop and I saw this cool start fuction but when I tried it, it didn't work!
Do you need a XServe for this?(I don't have one ).
If not how can I do it?
    Thanks Roemer Bakker

    Hi
You can wake any mac from Sleep using Apple Remote Desktop. You can also invoke Sleep as well as Shutting down. What you can't do - unless it's an XServe - is boot one up that has been shut down. This feature is usually referred to as Lights Out Management or LOM for short:

If you're at all interested there is more on the subject here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2773
Only the Intel XServes ever had this feature. No-one on these Forums will know whether Apple are going to or are ever likely to introduce LOM for the rest of their product line-up. AFAIK the recently released iMacs and MacBooks don't have this feature. One would have thought that if Apple were interested in adding LOM to their current product line-up they may have done so this time around?

  • Does the wifi sync wake my Mac Mini?

I have my iphone syncing to the iTunes on my laptop. I recently purchased a Man Mini (2011) with Lion and I was thinking that now that iOS 5 does wifi syncing when it's plugged in, it might be better to let my mini be the new machine. However, I have my mini sleep after 15 minutes of non use. Will the wifi sync on my phone wake the computer on demand? I'd like to not have to turn my laptop on every time I want to sync my phone.

I too have a Mac mini (2011). When it was connected by wire to our router, the Mac would rarely go to sleep and when it did it rarely stayed asleep long even though I wasn't doing anything to wake up. However, I can confirm wifi iTunes syncing, remote app, etc WOULD always wake up the Mac.
However, we've recently relocated our router so Mac now wirelessly connected. iTunes wifi sync, remote app etc now NO LONGER wake the Mac up. Very annoying.
Considering iCloud backup now as a result.

  • Is it possible to remotely use my mac mini over the internet?

Im a PC user thinking about getting a Mac Mini to put in my home office so I can write iPhone apps. I also want to be able to access it from anywhere through my Windows laptop. Is this possible?

Yes.  You have a number of options.  Google is your friend.  LogMe In, Bomgar, and other remote management tools.  Or, if you want low tech, VPN in to your office and then use a VNC browser to remotely control the Mac.
    There are plenty of options.

  • ICal alarm does not wake up mac

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up alarm in iCal to launch app at scheduled time. It works when the mac is up and running. But if mac was sleeping at the scheduled time, alarm is missed.
I've read from somewhere that the new iCal in Leopard is able to wake up mac from sleep. Is it negative?
    Thanks,
    ner

I don't believe it will wake the machine up. But what you can do is set a Wake time in the Energy Preferennces to wake the machine up a minute or two before the scheduled ical alarm.

  • Choose only One bluetooth device to wake the mac.

Hello, recently I have been having a unacceptable bt keyboard problem. This keyboard (3x AA model) with updated firmware, disconnects itself from my mac when my mac is sleeping and wakes it up with a "connection lost" It normally starts to happen when the batteries are at 71%. Basically I want to disable my keyboard from waking my mac BUT I do want to wake my mac with my good ol magic mouse. Their's only 1 option and that's to disable all bluetooth from waking my mac? c'mon apple that's no option at all.  I want to choose only my mouse to wake up the machine. Please help me out you guys, It will be much appreciated and It will help the environment if I quit throwing out my batteries with 70% charge left. Was not this new firmware (1.1) suppose to conserve battery power. I am mind boggled please help. Thank you all.

    Hello:
To my knowledge, it is all or nothing.  There is no way that I am aware of that you can selectively have a device wake the computer.

  • How to remotely manage a Mac not on my network?

I'd like to remotely manage a Mac over the Internet. Specifically my mother's iMac, so when she loses Dock icons or can't find her Address book or something I can fix it from my location in another state. Simple things, but trying to explain it over the phone is generally unsuccessful. We're both running Snow Leopard. I can set things up initially on her Mac in person, and then I need something that requires no effort on her end for this to work. Thanks.

As Sijmons suggests, TeamViewer.com might be the easiest solution (and is frequently my suggestion).  This is a secure connection.
Some alternatives.  You get 2 free AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) accounts.  Setup your iChat client with one AIM account, and then setup your Mom's iChat client with the other.  Then you can use iChat Screen Sharing, as long as your Mom is available to approve the Screen Sharing request.  As a bonus, you can text, audio, or video chat with your Mom over iChat.  An Audio chat while using Screen Sharing will allow you to talk her through things while you demonstrate or watch her and provide feedback and corrections.
LogMeIn.com can be used free for personal use (secure connections used), but it does not provide file transfers (you could use something like Dropbox or insync (from Google) to do file transfers.
You could setup a Hamachi VPN (virtual private network) between your Mom's and your Mac (Hamachi.com free for personal use).  Once you have Hamachi setup, you could then just use Mac OS X Screen Sharing.  This is a secure connection.
A more complex approach is setting up your Mom's home router to port forward port 5900 (see portforward.com), then get a free dynamic DNS name from a service such as No-IP.com or DynDNS.org, and run a dynamic DNS updating client available from the service you get the dynamic DNS name from.  Now you can use Finder -> Go -> Connect to server... -> vnc://your.moms.dynamic.dns.name.  And if you also port forward port 548, you can do file sharing via afp://your.moms.dynamic.dns.name (down side is that this approach is not as secure, and it opens well known ports that might be attacked).
And for the really hardcore, you can port forward port 22 (ssh) and then create secure ssh tunnels that you use for screen and file sharing across the Internet.

  • Every time i wake my mac i get This computer's local hostname "D-360.local" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "D-444.local".

error message that my local host name is in use and the system generates a new one every time I wake my mac the error mssg reads This computer’s local hostname “D-360.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “D-444.local”.

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
