Removable disks and multiple catalogs

HI,
I have a new system and I am wondering what my options are to get my images onto the system.
I have the disks from my old system that have about 300 GB of images each. These images are divided by years so that 2 years are on one drive and two years on another.
The new Vista system has a 640 GB drive for data, so I could copy the data from these disks onto the new drive. However, that would leave me with little disk space on the new drive.
I am wondering if I can place the two disks into removable housings and access them as external drives. If I do so I have some questions.
1) Can I stick the images into one catalog that would include images from the 2 external drives and the new 640 GB drive? Are there issues if the external drives are not always present?
2)Or should I create 3 catalogs?
If I so. do the catalogs reside on the external drives, or with Lightroom on an internal drive? I am also concerned about what happens if I disconnect the external drive and remount another drive. No doubt the drive letters would be reused, but the content would not match.
Any suggestions?

As of Mountain Lion what I read says that TimeMachine can have multiple disks to back up to and will write backup data to whatever drives you add to your "pool".
This does not seem to work if any drive is smaller than the dataset you are backing up.  That is, apparently TimeMachine wants to put all the data from one machine in one place on one drive and if the drive it is looking at is too small it bails out with an error and tells you to reduce the data set size or get a bigger disk?

What file system format is the iPod formatted with?  FAT32? To check, right->click on your iPod's from under Computer and choose Properties.
Have you tried to reformat it yet to see if that resolves the issue?

  • IPod nano being read by Windows as "Removable Disk"

I have a 4gb nano, current firmware 1.1.1. Now, I've updated it before to the music on iTunes (back when it was on 1.0), but then one day, the iPod suddenly showed the exclamation/folder icon. So I restored the iPod with firmware 1.1 (it recommended I update, so I did), but my computer couldn't recognize the iPod. It kept showing a little baloon (I'm using XP) saying that the device could not be written to (only when I unplugged it, however). So, I thought that maybe it was just trying to write to it very slowly, but after leaving it there for a day, supposedly "writing" to the iPod, there were no results. I updated to 1.1.1, thinking that maybe 1.1 had a bug that caused this, but then I was confronted with the problem of nothing recognizing it at all. Windows now shows the iPod as a "Removable Disk", and when I double click it, it shows the loading mouse for about a minute; until it says
    "E:\ is not accessible.
The Files or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
NOTE: I have NEVER used any third party software like linux or "hacked" my iPod.
So, after looking around, I followed the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Because I could see the device in My Computer but couldn't open it, and iTunes didn't recognize it.
However, it was not a success, so I tried the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343
But that also didn't work. I am now at a loss for explanation, can anyone help me? This is my mother's iPod, and she's leaving on a business trip in two days; I'd like to get her music back on it so she can use the iPod on the plane. Any ideas?

It wasn't being recognized by anything... including the updater. But after searching through other threads, I found that other people have had this problem as well; it seems the firmware is the prime target for the scre-up. Thanks, Benoa, for the steps! Although you've probably heard it enough times already.

  • Do you know how to remove the removable disk dr

i accidently pushed the removable disk so it used 28mb is there away to take that out

What mp3 player do you have?
In the Zen Micro it's Menu--> Extras-->Removable Disk--> and set how large you want it.
If you don't want to use Removable Disk, set it to Disable and let it delete that partition.
You will lose any data on it, so make sure you've backed it up if it's important to you.
Other mp3 players probably use a similar system for Removable Disk.

  • Using The Removable Disk Opt

Hey! I have a Creative zen Gb and I've turned 52Mb into a removable disk for storage and now I can't change it back to be 0Mb. I've deleted all the files in the removable disk and erased the free space but still it won't give me the option of reducing the size of the removable disk...
    Any ideas gratefully received.

Extras->Removable Disk, then press *and hold* the Back button till a menu appears. Then choose 'Disable.

  • Changing Removable Disk Sp

Hello... I have a new 6GB Zen Micro...and a teenager who's been working on getting it up and running...for some reason she set up the Removable Disk Space as 2GB and has since started to sync about 200 songs to the Zen...we want to put the full 6GB to music, since that's all she'll use the Zen for...if we change the alloted space now, I think we'll have to reformat? If we do this, will it totally delete all of her music she's already loaded? Thanks for any help or suggestions!
Message Edited by cooperdogrocks on 02-3-2006 05:34 PM

I believe that you can scroll through your Menu to get to Removable Disk and then click <i>Removable Disk </i> and select <i>Disable</i>. It will take some time to reallocate the space, but once it's done, you should have your full capacity.
If you'd like to reserve some space you can select from 28 Mb and up.

  • Hello,  I have iMac from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.  Mail icon was accidently removed along with program.  Mail 4.4 is on other users but when I reloaded software my user got Mail 4.3. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS. Ideas?Matt

Hello,  I have iMac Itel i3, from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.
About 3-4 days ago the Mail icon in dock had question mark and was accidently removed, along with program on my user.  Oops.
    1. Mail 4.4 is on other users and works fine, but for me it does not work and tells me V4.3 does not work with latest OS X.
    2. I reloaded software from my user with original disks  (Oct, 2010) and got Mail 4.3 again. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS.  I am unable to load Mail.  Gives Yellow error message.
"  You have Mail version 4.3 (1081/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.7 (Build 10J869). For more information, click the Help button."
    3. Tried to update software and look for update for mail 4.3 on Apple site to no success.
Hate to go to MS-Entorage ( I may need to learn something new and alien) mail program since contracts are in Mail/Address Book.
    Ideas?
    MattDeeds

    Matt,
I would download and run the 10.6.7 combo update.

    Hi,
I tried your vi: I don't get any error message after removing the disk but LV7 keeps on accessing the drive at regular intervals even if you stop the vi and close it!!! This is not supposed to happen.
The only way to stop it is exit LV7.
If you don't use the file dialog and you wire a full path, you don't get any problem.
I also created a very simple vi that conditionally writes a text file on a: and I got the same behaviour.
This problem occurs only with LV7, I tried the same examples in LV6.1 and everything was fine.
If anybody wants to try I attach this simple example,
    Alberto

I upgraded to 11.1.14.62 this morning.  Not iTunes is saying "An iPod had been detected but could not be identified properly".  I unlugged/replugged in.  I reset the iPod, I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I'ver tried three different cables.
When I put the iPod in disk mode it shows up briefly as a disk then goes away.
    Any ideas?

Hi there  - I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
    Then you restart your computer.
Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled).
Then you restart your computer again.
Mine is working perfectly again now.
I hope it works for you,
    Carmen.

Wow...I never thought there would ever be such a screwy problem like this on such a large scale....has anyone noticed how many similar posts have been posted in the last week or so? Not saying this never happens to anyone--in fact, it's happened to me beofre, but it was simple to fix...but the same problem happening with so many people at about the same time*...I don't know, it's kind of strange...anyway....
Yeah, I'm a Mac/Apple guy to the core, and have been since 7th grade (about 11-12 years now). Yet, I can't help but look at my iPod as if it has self-destructed. I was listening to it (w/ tape adapter, of course) on the way home in the car, then unplugged it for literally five minutes, got into my apartment, plugged it in my dell Latitude, and poof it had been reformatted. So, the moment I plugged it in, its funcionality basically vanished. The 5 R's have been useless thus far, and I can't even reformat using Explorer, because Windows tells me that the 1 GB iPod now has no storage capacity. ***? Strange, strange. Anyhow, sorry for the rambling, but this really confounds and frustrates me. APPLE....HELP US PLEASE!
*Don't get me wrong: I'm not a conspiracy nut; it's just hard to wrap my mind around this right now.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I'm having trouble with Time Machine. It appears that since the upgrade Time Machine is not recognizing the external hard drive. When I go to Time Machine and select Disk for the current HD I am left with one of two options: "cancel" or "remove Disk." I am worried that I will loss my backups.

    Is this a usb drive?
It will probably never recognise that drive ever again.. Mountain Lion has this little bug where it cannot recognise some USB drives.. I don't understand it.. but it just happened to me and a quick google shows it is not uncommon.
Your backups are not lost.. they are just not accessible.. you need to plug the drive into a computer with a better.. older OS. Find a new USB drive that Mountain Lion can actually read.. and even write to.. and copy the files across.

  • When i try to open itunes i get insert a disk into removable disk f and when i look for that on my computer there is no disk f

when i try to open itunes i get the message insert a disk into removable disk f and when i look for disk f there is no f on my computer. I thought i might make a disk f that letter is not available in my device manager section. So i try and uninstall/install itunes it was error message wd is invailid character. I am in a pickle here.

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

    Hi
I followed this guy's instructions and it worked:

I did disable the security (AVG and Zone Alarm) when I tried on my own PC. My wife's laptop which eventually got it working also uses AVG and Zone Alarm but on an XP O/S whereas my PC is Vista - maybe this is why.
    Cheers for you help.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
