Removal of language files... HELP.

Hi...
Like many users probably, I have removed un-needed language files from my Mac OS X using, in my case, a programme called Macaroni... Which is great and freed up about 2GB of hard drive space.
However... I seem to acidentally deleted the UK English spelling dictionary from Mac OS X. For instance, now when I use Mac Mail, if I spell the word 'colour' and not 'color' then it gets highlighted as a spelling error. This seems to be the case across a series of applications.
Does anyone know how I can restore the UK English spelling dictionary to Mac OS X without, obviously, having in re-install the OS...
Thanks

Thanks.
I have got Pacifist and was told to install,
System --> Library --> Services for something called "AppleSpell.service".
I did that. But it didn't fix the problem. I will try what you suggest.
By archive and install you mean completely reinstall the OS...? How do archive your current set up and software when you go about doing something like that...?

  • What is the best way to find and remove unneeded language files from Mac OS X 10.8.4?

I have tried Spring Cleaning and it finds the files and then quits!

You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve used it since Tiger w/never any problems.  Just make sure you read all of the instructions.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).
Works on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

  • Removing Language Files

    Hello all!
I have an iBook G3 Clamshell Tangerine, 300 MHz with 192 MB Ram and 6GB HD, currently running OS 10.2.8 and I'd like to remove the language files to give it some more HD space. My problem is that Monolingual is for 10.3.x and above. I've read many excellent reviews of the freeware utility Bombich's DeLocalizer, but he has 'retired' that utility and doesn't carry it on his website anymore. Does anybody know of a third party site that still carries it? Since it's freeware, I woudn't see why Mike Bombich would mind third party sites continuing to offer it, even if he doesn't support it anymore. Or would anyone have a copy of this utility they would be will to send to me.
I have a second problem on this machine. I installed Norton Utilities and Anti-Virus on this machine, and it installed some things in my startup items folder. I deleted Norton Utilities and Anti-Virus, but I can't seem to remove the stuff in the startup items folder. Macfixit.com listed a freeware utility called Boot Config that was supposed to allow you to disable startup items in your /Library and /System/Library folders. Their link to download takes you to a page that says it's not available on that site anymore. Here again, can anyone point me to someplace where I can find a copy of this item?
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

I'm sorry, I guess I should have posted this in the iBook forum.
But this might apply to my 'Fresh Fruits' post of a couple of weeks ago.
I actually have a family license for Mac OS 10.2.X, and I only have it on one machine (the iBook) at the moment. I just updated the iBook from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8, and then downloaded an older version of Camino. It's a big improvement on it for web browsing, and I could probably get away with using 10.2.8 and this version of Camino on both the Strawberry and Grape iMacs, because of the improvement from OS 8.6. But now that I think about it, I could just custom install 10.2.X on these, and that would allow me to remove the language files.
    Oh well. Sorry.

  • Deleted language files + architecture

Ok I screwed up big time I think. I used Monolingual to delete what I thought were unnecessary files. I have intel version of software I use like Dreamweaver, Acrobat and Photoshop. Well neither of them want to start now. I can only put it down to me removing the language files and achitectures. I have English and English United Kingdom as my only language files. After that is the only language I ever use.
Could that be responsible for the problems with Photoshop Acrobat and Dreamweaver? Thunderbird, Firefox, Word, Excel, Xcode, ImageReady, Fireworks, Shake, Final Cut Pro and Blender all work just fine.
My computer is a Macbook Pro with 2GB RAM, Dual processor and 160GB HD 70GB of which is free space.
I have tried to install the above software so this problem really intrigues me. I am not really sure of any sort of activity monitor as I have only been using Macs for a few months. So sorry for I sound like a total newbie here.

Archive and Install will not work. It will preserve your Applications folder as-is with all the missing components. If you opt to preserve users then your /Home/Library/ folder will be preserved including any now damaged components.
Trust me I've been down this path once. When you remove all the required frameworks needed you cannot get them back by Archive and Install because the A&I will preserve parts of the installed OS that you don't want preserved.
Do your backup, but do an Erase and Install then reinstall all your third-party software.

  • Data files removed during language import

    Hi,
While running a language import on ECC 6.0, someone removed the data files from the /usr/sap/trans/data directory.
We are facing 2 problems now :
    1. the language that must be imported is now locked in SMLT (no lock exists in SM12 as described in help)
    2. we can't find how to recreate the datafile from the .PAT file located on the install DVD. (some people have told me they did it before, but can't find back how)
    Can someone please help ?
    Tx in advance

    What I know is,
If the datafiles deleted we can't add manually. better to install. before that taka a backup of existing one.

  • Re-install language files!! Help!!

    Hi there,
I installed Snow leopard then used Monolingual to delete language files. However I since then I have noticed a few programs don't work without certain languages!!!
Is there any way of reinstalling language files? Are they located on the Snow leopard disc?
If I can't I'm gonna have to do a clean install with Snow Leopard and I don't have Time Machine!!
    Any help much appreciated!

first, don't use monolongual or any similar apps. at the very best they will save you a few GB of space but you may run into problems such as you have. as for time machine, you do have it. time machine is software that comes with snow leopard. you just need an external drive to use it with. so get an external drive and make a full backup of your current system. you can use Time machine or any other of the multitude of good backup applications.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7495315#7495315
then reinstall snow leopard on top of your current system. no need to do a clean install.

  • Cleanup of language files broke office - will system re-install restore?

I used a third party app (CleanMyMac) to remove language files and universal binaries. Now microsoft office won't run. Even the installer won't run. Copying the application from a backup didn't help. (Though that did resolve the same problem for adobe acrobat).
I'm thinking to restore things to their pre-cleanup working state I'm going to have to reinstall the system.
Can I just run my system installer to restore missing files without erasing my disk and starting clean?
I'm running 10.4.11 now. The install disk is Tiger but I don't know what version of 10.4. It is several years old now and I do the system updates as they come out.

  • Cleaning out foreign language files

I installed the latest Micro-Smith Spring Cleaning Ap.
To save space I've been deleting foreign language files.
How many of these can be removed?
    I've currently got 5627.
For example, do I need any Arab files?
I thought that when I initially installed Leopard I opted for only English, but the Spring Cleaning Language File Folder indicated that I had over six thousand.
MS Tech Support said, "I don't have the exact number of how many non english files there are. If you want, you can probably contact apple to see if they have an exact number of non-english files. To be honest, I would just leave it alone. Those files don't take up much space, and its not going to do your system any harm."
The files do take up space. If I don't need them why shouldn't I delete them?

As per one other respondent, I have used Monolingual with OSX (note:prior to Leopard. I haven't seen anything to confirm it won't mess up Leopard) but I haven't had any problems with it.
The advice it offers is to leave any file related to your main language - in other words if you use US English, keep International English. I also erred on the side of caution and kept anything that mentioned English. You can easily save about 2Gb of space doing this as it deletes a lot of project and help files related to apps like iDVD.
I'm no expert but if you opt for English as your installed language it might be the case that OSX installs in English but additional stuff like iLife still installs all the foreign language files.
It also gives you the option to remove unwanted processor architectures. I was wary of this option but I had no problems, although it didn't save quite as much space.
    Good Luck

  • How to remove a font file and its mapping from XML Publisher Administrator

    Hello,
I am trying to remove a font file and its mapping from the XML Publisher Administrator. If this is not possible, is there a way to disable it?
The reason why I am asking this is because we just got a new check printer, and I was able to print just fine. However, the MICR font was not coming up properly on the check, so I went ahead and configured the font with the XML Publisher Administrator. Now my check output is coming up blank after running the XML report publisher program. The only change I did was to upload the MICR font and mapped it.
My template and rdf report file are working fine in another environment we have, so I know that's not the problem.
    Any help is appreciate it.
    Thanks.

This is how you do it
    Font
    DELETE FROM xdo_lobs
    where lob_code like '<Font_name>';
    Font Mapping Set
    DELETE FROM xdo_font_mapping_sets_TL
    WHERE mapping_code like '<MAPPING_CODE>'

  • How do I purge foreign language files from OS X, 10.8, without using purchased software?

I jumped from Snow Leopard on an older MBP to a new MBP with Mtn Lion already installed, and though my older MBP had all but English and Spanish languages deleted from the Snow Leopard install, it appears that I do now have many foreign languages I would rather not have on my hard disk.  I ran across an app from Stellar Software, Speedup Mac, that has a demo version, but without paying the $29 purchase price purging of language files cannot be done.  (It was this app that showed me that all those other languages were hidden on my drive.)  I am simply wondering if there is lesser expensive apps for stripping languages from 10.8 or simple command line instructions that I (not a usual Terminal user) could use to accomplish this "downsizing".  BTW, I'm not too keen on reinstalling 10.8 just to purge the unwanted languages.  I've got plenty of hard drive space (yes, it is HDD not Flash-based) but I think this new MBP would start up faster w/o the extra files.  Despite going from an MBP with a Core2Duo to an MBP with a Corei5, my new machine is way slower starting up.  Much gracias everyone.

I recommend that you do not do this. Extraneous language files do not occupy much space, and removing them has been known to break future upgrades for those apps. There is also no way to undo their removal, short of restoring your system from a backup.
Your computer's performance is unaffected by the presence of these localized language files. Deleting them will result in no performance improvement whatsoever. Localized language resources are stored in resource folders contained within each app. They load what is required according to your specifed settings in System Preferences.

  • Language files for non-official Skype languages av...

Skype bundles a number of languages with the standard installation file but there are more languages available for the interface. Some of these are really hard to find on the forum or web so to make life easier, some translators have opened a project on SourceForge (download your lang file here) where you can now get all the .lang / .ts and .qm files (as far as we know). To install in Windows, go to Skype and select Tools » Change Language » Load Skype Language file. To install on Linux, check the wiki on SourceForge.
If you would like to continue translating into your language or if you want to start a new non-official translation, please visit the project on Transifex
    Please note:
They're not all complete translations (but you're welcome to help!)
