Removal of room reverb

Is it possible to remove or lighten a small amount of room reverb from a single voice soundtrack using any of the filters in Soundtrack Pro or any other software?

This might not help in your set up as it depends on how it's recorded, so apologies in advance if this is a red herring.
However I'm often working on clips where the audio is recorded directly to camera, rather than via a mixer with a sound guy riding the levels. The result, in interviews, is that with both mics open, the mic where the person's not speaking at that point will be recording room noise/reverb and an off-mic version of the other speaker's voice.
Simply muting that track in FCP or the audio software will show if this is the case.
As pro cameras mostly default to recording 2 mono tracks, you can kill a lot of the background noise and reverb by using the audio mixer in FCP or adjusting the levels on the time line to take the non-speaker's mic down. It can be fiddly, but the improvement is often dramatic.
If the remaining audio levels for the 'live' mic are too low, you can cut and paste the good audio to the other track (or better still a new track) - pan them both to zero and you should hear a real difference.
It's not always best to take the spare mic levels right down, a bit of room coloration can help make the sound 'real', but that's down to personal choice.
This works with other noises, eg air con, as well as echoes.
An important caveat, though: this doesn't work on cameras or recorders that record both channels to a single stereo file, unless the device can be set to pan audio 100% L and 100% R and was set that way before the take.
Otherwise, you can use EQ, and noise gates/filters. No they are not perfect, yes they can work with care. Exporting to Soundtrack or another audio editor will give you more options.

  • Slight room reverb

Can I remove a slight room reverb from a single voice track using Logic or Soundtrack (Or other software)?

    The short answer: not really.
The longer answer: There are some tools you can try to try to de-emphasize the room, but they probably won't work to your satisfaction.
Expander: An expander will make the quiet parts even quieter, below a threshold level. STP has one, so try that.
Enveloper: This STP effect can emphasize or de-emphasize the attack or sustain part of the sound. You can try that, but using extreme values here will hurt your overall sound.
The company SPL makes a plugin called de-verb, which claims to be able to help this sort of thing. I haven't used it, but have other products of theirs and I like those. There's a free trial:
    http://spl.info/software/microplugs/de-verb.html
There may be others I'm not aware of.
The best and easiest fix to this, of course, is not to have the problem in the first place, and treat the room or choose a location that doesn't have that kind of reverberation. Lesson learned, right?
    Good luck!

  • How to record in a studio without room reverb?

    Hi
I am in preproduction for a short film of which about 80% will be shot in a blue screen studio. How do I ensure that the audio from the actor does not contain any room reverb? I presume this is possible as films like starwars etc were from what I understand almost entirely shot in studios and there is no reverb when the actors speak.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    cheers
    angus

The answer is batting... And that has nothing to do with baseball.
The big (Universal, MGM, Disney) production and sound studios are heavily insulated.
    Carpeted floors
    Foam padding on walls
    Door and window seals
Insulating wrap on all exposed ductwork and pipes
Padding on doors and windows (if they even have windows)
Wrap on cables and wires that are suspended anywhere that they may reflect sound
Cameras and people are not very reflective interestingly enough, but crates, and tables are, so they need cloth over them.
As to the "Star Wars" analogy, the actor's voice on the set is very rarely what you hear in the final production. Lines are re-read in a sound studio for the final cut, and adjusted to compensate for Foley and environment (sound effects and indoor vs outdoor, etc.). Volumes are "normalized", effects are added (echo, balance, ambience) and then it's all spliced together to match the lip sync on the screen.

  • Hum Remover turns into reverb effect

I noticed that on all the clips I have turned the Hum Remover audio analysis feature on, days later, the sound of those clips has become like a reverb effect, like a medium room effect. It's very noticeable. Turning it off fixes the issue. I'm using Adobe Audition for noise removal now.
This feature, Hum Removal, worked fine when I first turned it on. But days later, after restarting FCP X, restarting system, etc., it now sounds like a reverb effect and very strange.
    Weird.

    You are welcome, Al.
    I don't know. 44100Hz worked well.
Below is part of the email i received from Audacity. As you can see, they say "may be expecting" which surprised me a little; one would think that they would know. Still, noise removal is a small part of Audacity. I was grateful that they wrote to me. Very kind.
For your interest, I am printing part of their response to me when I told them of my difficulties.
I suppose that when I have a moment, I could check using a 48100 rate.
If you have additional comments after reading the exceprt below, I would be interested.
    Best,
    Allosaurus.
"Assuming "FCE" is Final Cut Express, it may be expecting a standard
44100 Hz, 16-bit AIFF file. Therefore make sure that is what you are
    exporting from Audacity.
"Set 44100 Hz for exports by setting the project rate bottom left of the
    Audacity window to 44100 Hz.
"The specific option to export AIFF signed 16-bit PCM will be in the File
Formats preferences in Audacity 1.2.6, or in Audacity Beta, choose it in
the "Save as type" list in the "Export File" window when you export."

  • Unable to remove Collaboration room member

We are unable to successfully remove a user from the members tab of "Room Maintenance" from Collaboration Rooms.   After removing the user from the list, we receive the following error:  "Properties could not be saved".
How can we resolve this issue?  Any input would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Laura Sturdivant

We had the same problem. At us we are synchronizing users with Microsoft AD. The user had to be deleted from the rooms before they where deleted AD - otherwise we got the problem.
If this is the your situation, add the user to AD again and then delete the user from the collaboration room - and AD.

  • Notification when user gets added or removed from room

    Hello all,
I need to periodically synchronize the name of the room members with members of a group of a 3rd party application, i.e. each time a user gets added to a room i need to add the same user id to a special group in a 3rd party application (in my case a user group in the bug tracker application JIRA)
Does anyone know if and how i can get a notification e.g. within a KM service if someone is added to or removed from a group? I can imagine there exists an API how to get the members but this would require me to poll KM to get the room members and i'm pretty sure this won't work well with 10000 rooms
    Best regards
    Dieter

    Hi,
For notification you need to configure "mail Transport"
    Go to
System administation -> system configuration -> collaboration -> transport - > mail transport.
Here you maintain the SMTP server IP address.
then members will get notification about room.

  • What's a good insert for reducing room reverb?

I have a reflexion filter on the back of my mic, but I'm still getting some room ambience. Whats a good plug in to reduce this?

    Hi
If you record 'unwanted Room Ambience', you're stuck with it.
If you don't want the 'Room Ambience' whilst recording, you'll need to modify the Room itself. Try dampening the room more with heavy blankets/curtain such as 'removalist blankets', or egg cartons, thick foam etc. Create a situation where the walls & ceilings aren't parrallel to anything etc, etc. Point the back of the mic towards the corner of the room so you may get less slap back. Place 2 large thick pieces of foam at 90 degrees to other behind the mic, point the back of the mic at the corner of the 2 foam pieces. Just experiment!! I'm sure others will have a ton of suggestions.
What I was addressing in my last response, was what you can do with what's been recorded. Sometimes you don't have any choice with what's already been done.
    (1) What kind of mic? - I don't think that really addresses the issue of recorded room ambience.
    (2) I think I read somewhere that, it is easier to reduce the 'source' room ambience, than add it.
    Hope that helps some what

  • EX2013 - Remove recurring room reservations from a terminated Meeting-Happy user

    Here's my situation:
User-A loves meetings! (don't we all?)
User-A loves making recurring meetings! (that last till the end of time)
    User-A gets terminated (so sad)
User-A's manager would like me to delete all these meeting's and free up room resources. (and forget about all the meetings)
I've read a lot that states this isn't really possible without logging into the user's mailbox and doing it all manually. I've also read that this:
    Get-Mailbox ConferenceRoom111 | Search-mailbox -SearchQuery "kind:meetings from:User-A"
but the output I get is:
The target mailbox or .pst file path is required.
I'm completely open to another way of doing it.
A wise man is a fool, with a good memory.

    Hi,
You can also try the following command:
    Get-Mailbox -Result unlimited |Where-Object {$_.RecipientTypeDetails -eq "roommailbox"} |Search-Mailbox -SearchQuery "from:User-A kind:meetings" -DeleteContent -Force
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks.

  • Audio editing issue- remove ambient room noise

I am doing an audio run thru of my short program (puppets, etc). We had to do some VO work and have noticed the ambient room noise varies from scene to scene. On some it is OK, but others it is quite noticable. Is there a filter I can apply to control that? FC6 Thanks!

If you did this properly and sent it from within fcp, when you save in soundtrack pro and switch back to fcp, it should update properly. Then compressor and into dvdspro

  • Voice & Vision shot in empty studio - remove/improve empty reverb audio

Working on a video piece to camera shot on green screen in a studio and the sound from the talents voice is really hollow/reverb.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I can improve the audio so that it doesn't echo so much.
Proficient in Soundtrack, semi proficient in Logic Pro, good understanding of filters, see if I can improve it with the help of some direction where to start!

Starting with something reverb-y, usually you will get, after hours of aimlessly fiddling about with expanders, noise reduction, filters and a lot of sweat and pain, something that sounds quite wretched. And reverb-y.
You can try Sonixworx for 1700.- Euros, or invest the money in re-syncing the dialogue properly.

  • Removing echo/room noise

I have an interview taken in a kitchen which, as a result, has some echo like qualities. Also, the door in the kitchen was open, and I didn't realize that the sounds of the nearby highway would be so distracting. So, with the echo and the highway noise, there is a lot of other noise going on besides the the dialogue of the person being interviewed.
I did a noise reduction but it really didn't help much; it made the audio sound tin-like.
Does anyone know how to reduce such noise???
    Thanks. Gilia

If you have access to Soundtrack Pro you can do some editing there that might help. Although you can 'send' the audio track with issues to Soundtrack directly, I make an .iff file copy of the audio track and open it up independently in Soundtrack.
Select a section of the audio track that only has the ambient sound (street, noise, etc) but no voice. Under Process>Noise Reduction>Set Noise Print you can Soundtrack what is the noise you want to try and eliminate in the whole track.
Then you can select the entire track, do Process>Noise Reducation>Reduce Noise and see if that helps.
There are many other functions under Process>Effects that can help as well. I'll usually do a trial and error process, but you can monitor the results in real time and save that modification as a preset, then use it again in other parts of the interview.

  • Removing the Hall and high pitched reverb

    Hey all,
I need to edit the sound qaulity of three or four clips in adobe audition cc. They all have a large hall sound to them and I want to change that to be more close up as if your in a small room with the person. I tried many things such as reverb however since the audio starts off in a large room, removing that with reverb has no effect.
Secondly there is a high pitched reverb that is about .2 of a second delayed and is quite noticeable. I have gone into the spectral pitch display but I can't seem to isolate the high pitched reverb.
Here is a sample of the clip: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vzyiptdei9lsepn/Example.wav?dl=1
If anyone could please help me out  in instructions that I need to do that would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I'm afraid that you simply can't 'edit sound quality'. The nature of what you record is determined entirely by the space you record in, and how you place the microphone relative to the speaker and space. At this point, you're effectively baking a cake - can't be unbaked. Even if you use reverb reduction, you will still end up with a more 'distant' sound, because you won't have eliminated what's known as the 'early reflections'. What happens then is that you have a sound that appears to have been recorded in a more reverberant space, but without the reverb. And that sounds completely unnatural. I've listened to your sample and it already sounds somewhat 'processed'. Is this the raw sound? If it is, you're completely stuffed, and should leave it alone, because the only things you can do will make it sound even worse.

  • Reverb issues

I am trying to match up two sets of audio files in a single project. One set (stereo) has a fair amount of "small room" reverb which makes it stand out from the other set of audio files (mono). The quality of speaker's voice is still intelligible but somewhat tinny.
I know that removing reverb is next to impossible even with the best of equipment. My goal is to lessen or bring down the reverb of the small room set to bring it closer to the other set of audio files. What combination of effects would I need to apply to pull this off?
I have tried matching EQ with little to no effect. I have also tried various combinations of EQ, Noise Gate, and a Compressor with some success but it still isn't where I would like it to be.

It sounds like you are aware of the difficulty of the problem and are on the right track.
I think the first thing you should do is sum the stereo track to mono.
That is a great way to cancel out some of the reverb, and then you'll
be starting with mono in both cases.
Small rooms tend to have strong resonances, so if you can sweep a bandboost EQ
to find one or two of the most intense peaks, you can then change the EQ boost
to a cut and reduce the sound in that frequency range. This can help.
The tricky thing in your case is that cutting a typical low reverb frequency
is also cutting out the fullness you might need to get rid of the tininess in the voice.
Expanding (a gentler process than gating) can be added next.
Make sure the attack is fast and try to adjust the threshold and release
to reduce the reverb without destroying the speech. If the track varies
in loudness a lot, this trick might not work at all.
You should definitely add a little reverb to the dry tracks.
Check out the various presets available to you. Sometime reverbs have
small room presets. Try to figure out how close you can get it to the
roomy tracks without making it sound bad.
Room tone can be added at the end. Figure out which set of files has the most
room tone, get a sample of it, and then add it to the other set. If you sample
the roomy track, do so after you've mixed it down to mono.
