Remove a zombie app?

Hi there,
Anyone have any ideas for how to *truly* remove an app (from the MAS) from your system?
I've got one here (TextWrangler) that is glitched somehow, so it keeps being listed in the updates-available screen, even though it's already been updated. If I delete the app (removing the app bundle from /Applications; there aren't any other parts to it that I can find), it is *still* listed on the Updates page.
I've tried scouring all connected drives for anything to do with TextWrangler (or BareBones, the developer), but there isn't anything I can see. I've tried hiding the app from my purchase history in the MAS, but that doesn't do anything — no matter how much I try to nuke this app, it's always telling me there's an update available for it.
(I noticed this under Lion, before I moved to 10.8; that update hasn't changed anything)
Thanks if you've got any tips
cheers,
john

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
I had the same issue with Text Wrangler last year. One day it went away. I have the issue right now with Xcode. I have the updated version of Xcode sitting in my Apps folder. It has been backed up to Time Machine and also is updated on my HDD's clone on another attached HDD, but my MAS app is flagged with the red 1 and Xcode in my purchases list says Update. There is an update bug in the MAS that occasionally pops up and nothing anyone does to aleviate it seems to help. I have deleted all of the recommended cache files and plist files and nothing changes.

I got an iPhone 4 a week ago. I synced my iTunes once and now I want to change what albums and playlists are on my phone. When I try to do this, iTunes threatens to remove all my apps. Of course, Apple's support is no help. I know there has to be a way to add and remove whole albums and playlists like on the music tab on the device, so please don't tell me to uncheck/delete everything from my iTunes that I don't want and re-sync. That is not helpful and not the issue. How do I get around it threatening to remove all my apps?

On the MacBook, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Advanced > Disable remote control

  • How do I remove the watch app from iOS

I just updated my iOS and now have a watch app icon I can not remove.
I don't want it there. I don't want an apple watch. I will not be buying an apple watch. It's a waste of memory on my device.
My phone is not an advertisement space for the marketing of apple's products. I feel it's crossing a line now with the watch app.
How do I remove this app from my iphone?

You cannot remove the Watch app. It is a core app like Health, Weather, Compass, etc. Move it to the last page of your Home screens, or put it in a folder if you don't want to see it.

  • How do i delete or remove the Tips app and the health app that apple added to my phone on the last update 8.0.2?

How do i remove the Tips app and the Health app that apple added to my iphone on the last update? Update 8.0.2? I didn't want these added to my phone. I have to remove apps every time there is an update. After the phone is updated I reinstall the apps I removed. After 8.0,2 there was not enough room for me to reinstall my apps because they added the Tips app and the health app. How do I remove them? When you hold your figure on the apps they added, X's pop up on all of the apps i've installed, but not on the ones that come on the iPhone and the ones that they added on this last update. Please help.

They force you to buy health insurance these days and now apple forces you to keep spyware apps on your phone.
Oh, knock off the fearmongering. None of those apps are spyware. Health stores all of its data on the phone. It will only back it up to your computer if you do an encrypted back up. The only data it collects on its own are steps, stairs and distance traveled. Anything else in it is information you've explicity authorized it to collect from anothr app you've installed. You're not required to put anything in Passbook, Podcasts, iBooks or Newstand.

  • Shutting down my iPhone 4S no longer removes all the apps that have accumulated on the multitasking bar. What happened?

Maybe I imagined it, but I could have sworn that holding down the home button and sleep button at the same time until the slider icon appears at the top of the screen, and then engaging the slider icon,  completely shuts down your iPhone and also removes all the apps that have accumulated in the multitasking bar.  But, that does not work anymore on my iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 (9A405).  The iPhone shuts down, but the apps in the multitasking bar remain after you turn the phone back on.  Did I imagine this feature in the past, or has something happened that no longer enables this functionality?  Closing all those open apps in the multitasking bar one at a time is a PIA.

  • How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation bcoz of earlier files

How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation of the new version because of the existance of files from the previous version.plz help

What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.

  • Removing the social app 1.5 from N8 Belle

How can I remove the Social app version 1.5 from my N8 Belle. Is there a component catalogue with descriptions what to delete in program manager?
I don't need Social/Twitter/Facebook on my business phone especially when these apps are modifying my addressbook.
    Michael

You can go into Settings -> Installations -> Already installed and remove everything Social as I did
But if you do this then you will always be "warned" that you have an update waiting for you!

  • How to remove glitched nameless app install box?

    Hello.
Recently updated my mother's iPad (The New one) to 8.3 from whatever iOS version it was shipped with (it was never updated before). Had to do so only because it was in an endless reboot loop for some reason (maybe due to having way too many apps installed), ending up in restore mode at best. After restoring it from iCloud backup, there's one app that just stuck and won't let me delete it by any means. It's nameless. Literally. When clicking on X button, the confirmation popup has only an empty pair of «». It also has no name after rebooting the device (which fixes its being on "waiting", leaving just empty gray box).
    What doesn't work:
    - obviously, normal way of deleting via X (which is there, but pressing it has no effect on the app)
    - as listed above, rebooting, even by holding Power+Home for hard reboot
    - connecting to iTunes and removing it from app managing screen - there's no X on it there
    - restoring from iCloud copy again - it *returns* in exact same state, even when using fresh backup
    - exiting app store account, rebooting and then logging in again
My guess is this was one of the oldest apps that is no longer on AppStore and/or no longer compatible with the device, while still listed in iCloud backup, but can be wrong on that. There was a hellish ton of free apps installed, my mom pretty much installed everything she could for free and almost never deleted anything, collecting over 1000 apps.
Would appreciate any ideas. Even though it's not that important, but I've been determined to clear this mess, removing 90% of that collection, and this ghost app just keeps bugging me.
Going with clear install without iCloud restore is way to dangerous to even think about. Because, y'know, game progress, millions of cat photos... the loss of that can't possibly be forgiven.

You could try to make a backup in iTunes, and then restore from iTunes.

  • Can I remove the compass app?

The golfing powers that be have determined we can no longer use our Golf GPS apps in competition because Apple have a pre-installed compass on the phone. Hopefully if the golfers generate enough fuss about this then Apple will release a software update that allows its removal. Its not rocket science Apple... but it is already causing a major talking point.

Removing the compass app would not stop the compass working in Golf GPS apps. The compass is a hardware feature with software to view its output. The phone needs to know which way it is pointing to provide an accurate GPS view.

  • Why has dr.web light ben removed from the app store

Why has dr.web light ben removed from the app store and from my shopping list?

Same issue but I'm still on my 5c. I originally thought the issue was due to it's new link to game center so I could be pushed ads like with how crazy taxi is now.  Or at least requiring being online to use.
Im wondering if it's even worth paying for a game when eventually it will be turned into the freemimum model anyhow.
I hope someone has an answer for this.

  • Lyrica 2 app removed from the app store?

    Hello.
I've Noticed that the Lyrica 2 app has been removed from the app store. What happened? And is there a way to have my money back? 0,99 is not much, but it's really frustrating.

    Dah•veed wrote:
I am curious as to why you feel that because the developer stopped developing and selling the app, you believe that you should be given a refund? You paid the 99¢ and got an app, correct? So you received the app for which you paid?
Because the app still crashes very often and now likely never will be fixed.  And while it's working right now, there have been times where it hasn't worked at all - I don't know if it's just looking at lyric websites or if the app itself has a server that it needs to run.

  • Can't remove deleted iPhone apps from Mac

I haven't been able to find the specific answer to this one.
After removing an app from my iPhone 4S, I also try to remove it from iTunes on my Macbook Pro (Mavericks 10.9).
For example, if trying to remove my "CBS" app (see image below)
Steps to reproduce: Connect phone to Mac > Open iTunes on Mac > iPhone > Apps
I have the option to "Install" it again, but no option remove or uninstall it completely. The "Remove" button only seems to apply to apps I have kept on my iPhone and do not want to remove e.g. the Fandango, Flixster, HBO GO apps.
How can I completely remove/uninstall the CBS app from the list of options? It didn't work well and I no longer intend to use it.
    Thanks
