Remove banding from scanned magazine images

Hi there,
I would not normally come and bother people on here but despite repeated efforts to find an answer for myself, I haven't been able to.
I would like to know if there is an action or a plugin (either free or purchase) that can remove color banding from magazine images that have been scanned. Unfprtunately, it's not my scanner so I can't simply replace it - which would be the easiest option.
here is an example of the problem:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/143515/tuttifrutti-4.jpg
Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated,
Jason

TSN,
The image has been taken down.  I guess the OP reacted to my comments about copyright issues.
What follows is an academic type of description of the problem(s), as I doubt we'll hear from the OP again.
There was quite a bit of moiré, more clearly visible on the face of the model, but that was not the OP's main problem at all.
There were some broad diagonal stripes, in the opposite direction of the moiré on the face, as if painted with an unsteady hand using a custom brush of some kind.
The image below shows a couple of crops, intentionally exaggerating the strips for easy illustration of the problem.

  • Remove banding from gradient light

How the heck can I remove banding from light gradient? I watched over 100 tutorials about this and yet not a single one works for my case!!!!!
I have a light set in dark red color over a solid layer. That creates a color gradient. But it's so blocky that messes up the whole video.
My color depth is 32 bpc.
    I tried adding noise 5-10% (result:nothing)
I added some boxing blur (result:nothing)
In preview color seems (not sure about that)  to be ok but when saving it into mp4 then Ι get everything messed up.
    My output options:
    H.264
    24 frames
    profile: high
    level:4
    bitrate settings:vbr,1pass
I don't know what to do!! I want a smooth gradient light on the solid layer without all this blocky look! why is it so difficult to have?!
    layers:
    light  & solid layer

Thank you guys but nothing is helpfull.
    1. AE 9.0.0
    2. whe you ask for specific information then be specific so I can understand. You are the experts but you have to deal with people who don't even know what a pixel is, like me.
    3. Adobe Media Encoder CS4? That's a lot of reading there. I don't undersand the 90% of the AE terminology used. Is this AME a program or something? I learned the basics in After Affects by just messsing around with the  program, so can you please provide me the very basics of what should I do with AME? I just want to make my video not to get a Phd in AME!!
So I am stuck in the last step "make a movie" .. How the AME will help me? Do I have to set up something there and then to select it from After Effects? I don't even know where to begin!! It's like it's 1000 times more difficult to render the movie than making the movie and the effects :/

  • Best way to remove background from b&w image

    Hello,
I work a lot with black en white images from scanning electron microscopes. Prior to publication, I usually make the background completely black so the subject stand out more. What is the best approach to extract your subject from the (sometimes cluttered) background? Due to the lack of color traditional methods are not very useful.
    Thanks,
    Bart

Changing levels and contrast does not work for me as the subject loses too much quality. I usually use a tablet and remove the background manually but because of all the little hairs on the subject this is going to be a tedious task and I have to do a few dozen.
Anyway, if there's no quick fix than I'll have to rely on the tablet anyway.
Thank you guys for your input!

  • How to make true two-color image from scanned rgb image...

    hello...
I have 50 scanned images from one book, cyan + black, offset. How to easy make new two color (C+K) from this rgb images? If possible to make action.
    sample:

How to easy make new two color (C+K) from this rgb images?
Not at all. They need extensive adjustments long before that - they are scanned wrongly to begin with (double-sided must be scanned against a black background), have fingerprints and whatnot. Once you have them cleaned up, converting to CMYK and cleaning up the colors is anotehr matter. Could be as easy as blanking out the yellow and magenta channels, could entail additiojnal extensive work. in any case, it won#t probably be automatic.

  • Remove background from Smart Build images

    Hi,
I've just started creating my first project with Keynote, and so far it's terrific. The question I have is, is it possible to use the alpha tool, or something similar to remove backgrounds from images that I'm using for a smart builds effect.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Welcome to the discussions, Decaffeinated1.
The problem you're seeing is specifically with how Keynote copies images. Neither Pages nor Numbers has this problem. The problem and the solution is described here.
    http://www.keynoteuser.com/news/?p=256
Basically, your choice is to copy through Pages or Numbers (or iWeb) OR to copy another object which will force Keynote to adhere to the transparency set with Instant Alpha.

  • Remove tooltip from Date Picker image

    Hi All,
I want to suppress the tooltip text when hovered on Date Picker image.
I tried the code below but nothing seems to be working.
    [code]
    <script type="text/javascript">jQuery.noConflict();
    jQuery(document).ready(function($){
        $('img').each(function(){
            $(this).removeAttr('title')
    </script>
    [/code]
Can some one who is expert writing JQuery please throw some light here and tell me what is that I am doing wrong here.
I am using Oracle Apex 4.2.1 version.
    Thanks,
    Raj.

Not sure why you thought the noConflict call was needed.  APEX includes jQuery already.
You're pretty close, but your don't want to remove the title from ALL the images on the page. You want to be a little more specific.
The image you want to target has a class of ui-datepicker-trigger so go with that.
Create an Advanced Dynamic action that runs on on "Page Load". Use this javascript code:
    $(".ui-datepicker-trigger").removeAttr("title");
    Thanks

  • How to remove banding from exported images (png, tiff) from illustrator layout with gradient

is there any way to remove or reduce banding that I am getting in a layout I've done that contains a gradient? I am exporting raster images (png or tiff) and there is a noticeable stepping of tonalities, rather than a smooth shift
    thanks

In an 8bit format like PNG you only have 1024 unique levels...
    1024 is 10 bits. 8 bits is 256.
But PNG is an RGB 8-bit per channel format. That yields 256^3 (i.e.; 24-bit or 16.7 million) potential "levels" (colors).
...banding that I am getting in a layout...
Banding that you are getting where?
What are the specific color values involved?
    What is the final use?
What will be the distance across the gradient in its final use?
You have to consider whether the banding is actually in the raster image, or if it is merely an artifact of where/how the image is being viewed.
Banding is not a simple matter of image color depth. Banding is a device-dependent phenomena. The banding you see on your monitor is not the same banding that will be seen on your grayscale laser printer; is not the same banding that will be seen on your CMYK inkjet printer; is not the same banding that will be seen on press. Banding in print is generally more a function of levels of gray (per separation) of the imaging device, and can vary depending on the halftone ruling (assuming conventional AM screening).
Depending on the answers to the questions above, you may very well be fretting over nothing.

  • How can you remove mirroring from the digital images of old photographs?

I have inherited several hundred old photographs and many of them display "silver mirroring" in the black regions which creates a bluish cast on the scanned image.  Is there a simple way to reduce this problem during the scanning process or is there a way within Photoshop to repair it?  With many such photographs, I shutter to consider the time required to repair them one-by-one in Photoshop.

When scanning, try setting the black threshold up a bit.  This might loose some detail in the dark regions, but it will also make the slightly lighter images in the dark regions disappear.  It depends on how light the images are and how much dark-region detail you are willing to sacrifice.
Yes the Photoshop forums should also help you.
    Good luck,
    Jay

  • How to permanently remove Pokki from a system image

QuestionI have configured the base install of our E440/E540 to our standards with one exception.
Despite my efforts, each time a new user signs into a machine, Pokki is loaded up and added to the taskbar.
I've uninstalled it. I've combed through every file/folder for reference to Pokki. I've use the uninstaller from their site. I've combed through the registry and removed every entry.  These efforts have not produced the desired result of removing Pokki entirely.   How can I do this?
AnswerPokki can be removed through a two step process using a Pokki provided clean up tool  These steps must be completed in order.
Uninstall Pokki from “Control Panel -> Programs and Features”.  It may appear as one or more of the following:
    Pokki
    Start Menu
    Host App Service
    Run the cleanup tool “LenovoPreloadUninstall.exe”
Here is the Pokki cleanup tool:
    https://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/sm/lenovo_preload_uninstall_pokki.exe
    Admin note: updated download link.

I'm afraid having an official tool by Lenovo doesn't really inspire confidence.  I have no idea who's dropbox account that is.  For all I know they could replace the exe with something malicious.  Removing Pokki is way harder than it should be.  Why won't it just remove using the control panel and why does it recreate every time I setup a new account? I will agree with head4heights that there should be a step by step guide on how to remove this. Come on Lenovo.  We all enjoy your hardware and we just want the choice to clean some of this stuff up.  Help us out please.

  • Removing keyword from multiple images at the same time

None of the documented methods seem to work for me.
1     Select all the images. Go to Metadata > Remove Keyword [my keyword] - the keyword is only removed from the image that is selected in the batch - i.e the one that has the yellow border round it to show it's the active image.
2     Select all the images, enter [my keyword] in the Add Keyword field when Keyword Controls is visible and press Shift + Enter - does the same thing as 1 above (removes it from the active image only).
3     Select all the images, Shift Click on the keyword that I have in my Keyword Controls in the Control Bar - does the same things as 1 above.
So all these methods, which are supposed to work, do not work for me. The removal of the keyword is only applied to the image that has the yellow border showing it to be the currently active image in the selected batch - the remaining selected imaged still retain the keyword. I can remove it "one at a a time" but it would be great if I could find a solution as to why this isn't working.
    Any ideas?
If it helps, I'm running Aperture 3.1.3 in OS X 10.6.8.
    thanks
    Alan

Based on the frequency with which this trips up users, the Aperture team is going to have to add a much stronger visual indication that "Primary Only" is active.  Marching ants, anyone?  Or a pink selection marquee?
At least in the Viewer when multiple Images are selected the thin white selection marquee is dropped when Primary Only is active.  There is no such change in the Browser.

  • Noise (removal) from scanned slides

I'm relatively new to Aperture and the image adjustment process in general.
I have many slides dating from the late 70's and earl 80's (yes, I'm heading up in age). They were taken with a SLR Cannon AE1 which was pretty good for its time. So many of the images are pretty nice. The goal is to capture them digitally. We had one tray scanned commercially to start our process. From my perspective the scanning process was pretty successful and I have brought them into Aperture and organized / rated them etc.
My questions are what I'll term "noise". Being very old, the slides have "dust", dirt etc. on them. This coupled with any original image processing noise and any artificialities due to the scanning process make may of them dirty /noisy. The problem is more significant/observable in lighter areas such as sky, beach etc. So the impact of what I call "noise" is not global across the image. That is my problem.
I went to the Apple store for some 1-on-1 advice and basically was told go image by image with spot/patch, retouch, and the global noise reduction tool (not a good session). Obviously, that approach would be tedious, long and painful.
Assuming I don't want to rescan,
    1. Are there workflows or processes that help reduce this conversion "noise" that have worked for others. Are there "best" practices way to improve images that arrive this way.
    2. One approach I have considered is an plugin editor that can help smooth the noise and do so on specific image areas.
    - is this a valid approach
    - are there recommended plugins for this problem.
    3. Any other directions or approaches from other that have been through this process would be appreciated.
    I appreciate any recommendations,
    Bob

Noise has very specific meaning(s) in digital imagery. What you have are film dust and scratches, very different than noise.
The bad news is that removing dust and scratches from digital images takes practice and is very time consuming; most folks use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. The good news is that dust and scratches on slides (except Kodachrome) can usually be 98% removed during the scanning process using digital ICE technology (google digital ICE for info).
ICE is hardware dependent, but all quality modern scanners have the capability. However the scanner operator must manually choose ICE before scanning, and like I said ICE does not work with Kodachrome. Your commercial scans were badly done if the slides were dusty (most are) and ICE was not offered to you.
There are various filters (google dust and scratches filter for info) that can also be helpful, particularly for Kodachrome, but I have not personally used them because I use a Nikon 8000ED with ICE and the results on dust and scratches are nothing short of amazing. With ICE the scanner actually ignores the film surface where the dust and scratches reside. Unfortunately with Kodachrome the image is also on the surface of the film.
    Good luck!

I've been taking screen shots for years and opening them from my desktiop. Suddenly, today, I've lost the ability to open them. I can right click on the picture and do "quicklook", but that's it. They just won't open.
Similary, if I scan an image and save it as a PDF file in pictures, I'm suddenly not able to open it either!
    Why?

Move the com.apple.screencapture.plist file out of /username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and try again.
BTW, use the default 10 point setting for text. Your choice just wastes screen space.

A colleague of me did it like this:
    * the scanner is connected to a network document server.
    * the document server sends(ftp) the image to the oracle XDB
    * a form shows the scanned documents(using a view on the ftp directory in XDB using path_view)
    * in this form the user can move the scanned document(s) to a (blob field) in a table.
    Hope this helps a bit...

  • Remove Link from image

    Hi,
I have just converted an MS Word 2013 doc into PDF via the MS Word Export utility. This worked great, however, when I hover over any of the images that are part of the document, a yellow box appears showing a path to the location from where the image originated on my hard drive.  I went back to the Word doc and removed all Metadata, then exported it to PDF once again, but again, the path still shows when you hover over an image.  This is not restricted to the PC I used to create the doc.  When I transfer the PDF file to another PC, the path still shows.
Does anyone know how to prevent this?  I'm using the free Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.07
    Many thanks

Reader can't create PDF files. You're using an internal function of Word, so your question should be asked on a Word forum.
