Remove broken links to baggage files

Yesterday I thought I would take a shortcut and copy/paste the Index file from one project into a another project. The problem is, I was careless and copy/pasted the Table of Contents file by mistake, renamed it for the current project, saw what I'd done when the TOC changed right away, then had to fix things in a hurry.
I put the original Table of Contents file back, but Robohelp remembers links to baggage files from the bad TOC that are not in the current project, and displays them in the Project Manager with a red X through them. I can't find any way to delete them. How do I clean this up?
Thanks!

I haven't tested to be certain, but perhaps the dev team put measures in place that disallow deletion until any links to the baggage files have been removed?
Just a thought... Rick

  • Remove broken links in RH 7.0.2

I'm working on a project where the Help covers two different releases of a plug-in Adapter.  I thought I was going to have to have two different sets of files for one section of the product for release 4 and release 5, so I copied the existing folder and had "feature" and "feature4" folders.  Then, as it turned out, there weren't that many differences, so I deleted the "feature4" fodler.  I deleted the files and folder from within RoboHelp, so I assumed that if there had been any problems, I would have received a warning.  Apparently I was wrong.  =(
Now I have Broken Links that refer to that deleted "feature4" folder.  I do NOT want to restore those files, because I don't need them.  I've checked all the hyperlinks in the topics in the "feature" folder and in the generated output, and they all seem to work.
So, my question is, what file does RoboHelp use to store hyperlinks?  Is there any way to go in and hack the code to remove broken links to files that you have deleted and don't want to restore?

Well that only took me three hours.  I had four broken links to repair. At one point I had one fixed and then it came back.  *shakes fist at sky*
Can I just say that the Broken Links feature is remarkably unhelpful and non-intuitive?
For anyone else who is here searching for answers, here's what I did.  (because "go in and fix it manually" is remarkably UNhelpful if you don't know what you're looking for)
Under the Broken Links folder, double-click the broken link reference.
In the Topic References dialog, click one of the references, then click Edit.  The topic will open.
Click the HTML tab so you're looking at the code view.
In the toolbar, go to Edit > Find.
Search for links within the HTML code (I used part of the HTML code for a link, "href" as my search term).
When you find the link code that matches what is shown in the Broken Links view, fix the link (edit the code, or place your cursor in the link then click the Design tab, then remove/replace the hyperlink).
Two of my links required me to search the code as described above. I searched the code view and located the references to the "feature4" folder and deleted or corrected them.  The other two were links to deleted or renamed files, so I clicked Restore in the Topic References dialog box, recreated the files, then deleted the recreated files.  That seemed to fix those links.
Oy, now to get some actual work done today!

  • Repeated problem of broken link and unused files

    Hi ,
    I am using RH8.0.2
I have updated my RH8 to RH8.0.2 and then fix all broken link and did what was advised.i got result, everything was fine, I was a happy man. Today when i open the same project for updation, i found again plenty of broken links and unused file in the same project.
Is there any permanent solution of the problem of broken links and unused file or i have to fix it every time when i open my project?
    Plz help!!!
    Br,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul.
Two things. Firstly some of the paths you have in your project are very long. In the example you have given we are seeing less than half the path. This may not be the problem but it maybe in the future. Secondly, as Peter has suggested, the problem maybe related to source control. Do you use it? I have heard of instances where (e.g. .FPJ) files cause issues.

  • Linking to baggage file

in RH8, I'm trying to create a hyperlink within a topic to a baggage file, which I imported as a pdf. Is this good practice? because I was able to do it, but now when I try to view it, it views fine. But back in design mode, I get the robohelp error message, where it asks if you want an error report or not, then kills RH.

Yep.... couple of saves did the trick, I'd experienced this a while ago but couldn't rmrmember what to to do - Thanx once again. In the end I had to remove the image again as if I didn't when I saved, iweb would restore the link I had just removed so her was my workfolw.
    Delete image.
    Save
    Quit and relaunch.
    Add new image
    link to file
    Save
    Quit and relaunch
    Publish
Not sure if 2 quits and relaunches are necessary but it worked so I'll keep it that way.

  • Broken Links in iTunes - files have not been moved

    Hi,
I'm running iTunes on my XP machine. I have about 10,000 tracks in my library. Every so often (well quite often nowadays) I get a load of tracks that have the exclamation mark next to them saying the file can't be found. I have not moved any of the tracks. When I double click ont he first offending track it asks if I want to locate it. I click OK, and it presents the folder where the file actually is (and always has been!) I then have to go through the rest of my library - each track with an exclamation mark just needs to be double clicked and it miraculously remembers where the file is!
    OK, so the questions are:
    1) Why is iTunes forgetting the locations of files that haven't moved? I'm guessing there might be some issue with the iTunes Music Library.xml - but I ahve no idea what.
    2) Can I stop it happening? Obviously the best solution is to dump windows and buy a mac - which will be happening in a month or so...
    3) If I can't stop it happening, is there a way for iTuens to just show me the broken links so that I can go through the double-clicking process easily?
    4) If I delete the library and recreate, will iTuens remember things like bespoke artwork, ratings, etc?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    X.

+"4) Absolutely not; the ITL file holds ratings, playcount, date added and other metadata that will be lost. And you can't get it back by rebuilding your library from the XML file."+
Actually, this is exactly what you can do with the XML file. Prior to iTunes 5.0, importing the XML did not capture rating, playcounts, etc. even though the data was written to the XML file. Since then, you can recreate your Library completely by importing the XML file.
A while ago I performed two tests:
    a) One where I deleted the total song references from the Library, then 'imported' the XML file (from a previously saved iteration)
    b) The other, I opened iTunes with no Library database to start, forcing it to act like a new install, then imported the XML file
In both cases, the XML file was completely read, including Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes. All playlists (both Smart & Static) were recreated in their proper folders. It seems to have recreated the Library almost as well as the ITL file would. Looks as if iTunes v6.0.1 (and later) now reads and uses the complete XML file upon 'import'.
I say 'almost', as there were settings differences when starting from a 'virgin' iTunes. Also (and this is important), the create/load time when using the XML file was severely long. iTunes needed to read, interpret, and act on the information within the XML file and that took a long time. At that time, I had close to 12,000 song references and over two dozen playlists. Using a 'good' backup ITL file is an almost instantaneous fix.
Bottom line: Either file will work in recreating the Library. A backup ITL file, in my opinion, is still the easiest and fastest way to recreate your Library if one has a choice. In some cases, where one cannot place the music into the correct path for the ITL file to work properly, one can globally change the XML file to reflect the new path and use that for a very close approximation. I would suggest making and archiving legacy copies of both files a big part of your backup strategy (along with the music files, of course).
Hope this clears things up for you.
    Best of Luck

  • How to remove source link in PDF file

    Hello,
I want to create pdf files of all newsletters our organization has sent out for the past year. I took a template from the software we use for sending out our newsletters. I saved this template as an htm file on my desktop. Then I used acrobat pro to create a new pdf file from a web page. It comes out perfectly, all links are working, no problems there. But on the left top of the document there is a link to where that file is stored on my pc. It looks like this:
    file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/..........
I hope somebody can tell me how I remove that link from there. I've been struggling with it for some time now.
    Kind regards,
    Lucas

In the dialog of 'Create PDF from Web Page'you can change the settings.

  • Linked PDF Baggage File

    Hello,
I am using RoboHelp 9 to create chm files on a Windows 7 machine.  I have several pdf baggage files in my project that I link to.  All works well, except everytime I click on a link to a pdf I get a File download security dialog to Open or Save the file.
Is there a way to just have it open the file or is this controlled by Windows security?  I can open pdf files on my machine without any dialog box appearring when using Windows Explorer.
We would rather not have users making copies of the pdf files if they choose Save.
    Thanks

  • Changing external links by baggaged files

    Hello,
I'm a new user of RoboHelp.
I have generated a web help from a word document, correctly paginated, with titles and good styles.
In the word document, I have many links to external files, that can be displayed from the web help.
This works well, but the external files are link to a specific directory.
After generating this help, I would like the external files be embedded in the web help, so that they can be accessed from wherever.
So, I need to create baggaged files, and drop them to the link into the page.
Does it exist a way to generalise this action ? Because as I said previously, I've got many files to embeed in the web help.
Thanks a lot for your help,
    Regards
    Sylvain

Hi Sylvain and welcome to the RH community.
You have to point to a file (or files) you want to add as baggage. You can multi-select files when you add them but that is the extent of any generalisation.

  • How can i remove broken links automatically from my bookmarks

I have a huge list of bookmarks and i detect that several of the websites do not exist anymore. Is it possible to automatically remove these ? I know that websites can be out-of-service temporarily, but i take that risk. I remember that older browsers (Mozilla ? Netscape ? ....) had such a feature

  • Can remove broken symbolic link  ../../../sparv9/disk_ata

we found a broken symbolic link /platform/sun4u/kernel/drv/sparv9/disk_ata
    this is on a V440, Solaris 9
would like to ask, any issue if we remove this link, think it should not be a problem, but this is a live server.
    Thanks!

This is also surprising the fact that your server is a SunFire V440 means
it should only be using SCSI harddisks. This is really weird.
Anyway, since it is a broken link, you could actually delete for security reasons.
But since you are worried ( I don't blame you, coz I will feel the same way),
the best way is to keep a record of this broken link in a file where you could
access it in the future. So my final advise is, record the broken link (comlete path ) into a file
( you can do a cut and paste ) then secure the file ( chmod 400 filename)
and then delete your broken link. Do you agree ?

  • The broken link error

    Hi,
Please help me with this broken link error in Office Excel 2010. Thank you.
The problem is: a broken link cannot be removed from the file. The link was used in data validation, which refers to a list of values. After the path was corrected, it still shows there’s a broken link. Here are the details:
    I have 4 files named “000TVA_Test – 3”, “000TVA_Test – 4”, “000TVA_Test – 5”, and “000TVA_Test – 6”. The posterior files were developed based on the previous files.
In Test-3, sheet “Template “, cell “L4”, “O4”, “R4”… were built as dropdown list using data validation. The list source is in the “Library” worksheet. There’s no problem so far.
Test-4 was firstly copied from Test-3. In this file I renamed the worksheet from “Library” to “Setting” and the link was broken from here. I can also fix the broken link in this file. (While I didn’t realize there was a broken link.)
In Test-5 I fixed the path, but every time when opening the file, the broken link still shows.
In Test-6 I’ve removed the data validations. The broken link is still there.
I tried to find solutions online. I tried common methods, cannot find anything in the files is still using links. I also tried the “findlink.xla” add-in, but it only worked for Test-4, and couldn’t find the link in other files.
    Please help. Thank you!
    I uploaded files here: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=1A97736E0ABBAA41!113&authkey=!AF5wAd9rwUPnYyE&ithint=folder%2cxlsm
    Thanks again!

    Hi,
Based on my tested the files downloaded, I found that Test-5 & Test-6 included the "A defined name that refers to an external workbook", Test-4 had not. (Please click Formula Tab>Name Manage, you'll see them.)
However, the Break Links command cannot break the following types of links:
A defined name that refers to an external workbook
A ListBox control with an input range that refers to an external workbook.
A DropDown control with an input range that refers to an external workbook.
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/291984/en-us (It also applies to Excel 2010)
    Thus, we'd better try the workaround: re-build the Test-5 & Test 6.

  • Baggage Files keep disappearing

I am aware of the RH6 issue of the baggage files not being
able to be added the traditional way, and the user having to add
them manually in rhbag.apj file. I have done that and they do work
after that is done, but my problem is that they keep disappearing
after some time, and I will have to go in manually to add them
again. I add them, they work, and then after a couple days and a
couple compilations they are removed again and my link doesn't work
of course. Does anyone know a work-around to this, and how to make
them permanently stick? Or, am I to accept this nuisance and find a
different method for displaying these files? Any advice is greatly
    appreciated!
    Danni

I link to .pdf files from the TOC with no problem.
    Danni, you mention,
"...and the user having to add them manually in rhbag.apj
    file."
I always import baggage files in the RH explorer view, and I
let RH take care of the rhbag.apj file. (This is not to reject my
colleagues' advice to edit the file. It may be necessary. I haven't
    needed to do that.)
RH also keeps the baggage file list in a database table in
the .cpd file. It has a separate table for links to baggage files.
On the rare occasion when I have a problem, I discover an
error in the database table. For example, each topic and baggage
file has an ID number, and sometimes a file ID acquires a "minus"
sign. Normally that's a "missing file" flag, but RH can't reconcile
the database flag with the file's presence in the project folder.
Open a backup copy of the .cpd file in MS Access, go to
tables view and open the ones for baggage files. If you see a
negative topic or file ID, and you know the file is in the
project's Windows directory, delete the minus sign.
If you see entries for baggage files that you know are
obsolete, and you've removed them in RH and the project directory,
delete those entries. Save before you exit from Access.
Access may warn that you won't be able to save any changes
unless you convert the database file to your current version of
Access. I've ignored this warning and successfully saved changes.
On the other hand, I don't believe any harm would come from
    updating.
Temporarily change the name of the original cpd file and
substitute the revised copy with the correct file name.
Launch RH and open the project. The baggage files should be
straightened out, but if not, try importing the "missing" ones from
a location outside the project directory. (The corollary is that
you shouldn't try to import a baggage file that's already in the
project directory and may be in the rhbag.apj list as well. That's
    what sometimes confuses RH.)
Interestingly, when you import a file that RH previously
couldn't find, sometimes the import dialog says the baggage file is
already in the project, do you want to overwrite it? Just say yes.
Don't try to explain it, because RH can't tell you why it has to
overwrite a file that isn't there.
Of course, you have the option of going back to the original
.cpd file by removing the new one and renaming the old one.
Sometimes I start by making a copy of the entire project, but then
I have to label and remember which folder contains the version I
want to use later. Don't use the "recent projects" list in RH
unless you revised the project name for the copy.

  • Can't Delete Baggage Files

So I have a baggage file with no more references to it in my
project, yet the "delete" button is greyed out. I've also manually
removed the file from rhbag.apj, yet it still appears in my baggage
    file list.
    Any ideas?

    Aaron,
Before you throw away that .cpd file......
Make a copy of the .cpd file.
Launch MS Access and open the (copy) .cpd file.
Two tables are relevant: Baggage Files and References to
    Baggage Files.
The database structure is not hard to fathom.
The Baggage Files table lists and assigns a number to every
baggage file that (it thinks) is in the project. If there's an
entry here for a file you are certain does not exist, that's a
glitch. Delete that record from the (copy) .cpd database.
(Alternatively, follow Peter's instructions on how to delete and
    rebuild a .cpd file.)
The References to Baggage Files table lists each link by
baggage file number and topic number. (There's another table that
lists and assigns numbers to every topic that -- it thinks -- is in
the project.) If the references table has an entry, check the topic
that supposedly has a link. If it's a bad entry, get rid of it.
Temporarily rename the original .cpd file and rename the copy
as the original. Open the RH project.
(Alternatively, trash and rebuild the .cpd file and open the
    project.)
    Good luck.
    Harvey

  • Force PDF baggage file to open in Adobe Reader?

Hello, I develop WebHelp using RH10 and have noticed that in my published output, linked PDF baggage files launch in the users' browser window rather than in Adobe Reader. Is this something I can control?
This seems to be the case no matter how I set the options in the Hyperlink Properties dialog (Page Default, New Window. etc).

  • How to sync page icon in TOC with file type of baggage file?

all our pages are linked to baggage files (yes, we're also
using RoboHelp for document archiving). is there any way to set up
the skin such that the page icon in the TOC reflects the type of
the attached baggage file? i.e., shows the acrobat icon when the
baggage file is a .PDF, the MS Word icon when the baggage file is a
    .DOC, and so on.
    thanks much for any help/pointer
    --meg

When I have created bitmap icons in the past (used to work for a software company) I used to create them with either a icon creator tool (Axialis) or directly in photoshop.
For color depths 24 BPP or less, the transparency is coded by using a fixed color. Each pixel that have this exact color will be converted as transparent when the image is loaded in the toolbar. Usually, the color used is green RGB(0,255,0) or magenta RGB(255,0,255). The problem of this method is that if you use a pixel of that color in your icon image (not the background), it will be converted as transparent. The other issue is the poor quality of the borders (around the icons) because it does not permit smooth transparency. In other words, a pixel is either 100% transparent or 100% opaque, there is no variable transparency. It results in "aliasing" on borders for icons with rounded shapes.
This is an old technique so you will struggle to get the desired results but worth you having a look for "creating bmp icons with transparency" online.
