Remove CS5 Adjustment Layers as Palettes?

I know when CS5 first came out even the standard modal windows for Levels, Curves etc. were housed in a Palette and that blew my mind with hatred. It seems they've fixed that but are still limiting Adjustment Layers to the same Palette fate.
Is there any way on earth to switch back to the standard modal type window for Adjustment Layers? Forcing us to use them in a Palette window makes me want to go get a root canal.
Any help would be imensively appriciated. I've had CS5 for over a year and simply cannot use it due to this and some other issues.

Your first couple of sentences are incorrect.  Nothing's been "fixed" since Photoshop CS5 first came out.  Image - Adjust - Curves, for example, has always been a modal dialog.
Regarding the panel-based adjustments...  Have you tried to pan the image while in a modal dialog by pressing the space bar?  Oops.  Sure, the panel is a little different than the dialog, but we've all had to get used to it.  The ADJUSTMENTS panel was introduced not in CS5, but way back in CS4, by the way.
What is it that's bothering you about the panel?

  • CS5 adjustment layers are always clipped

When I do a new adjustment layer in CS5 it is by default clipped to the layer below. Very annoying.
I cannot find anyway of turning it off so the default it not to clip it as in previous versions.

In the adjustments panel flyout menu, uncheck Clip to Layer.

  • Photoshop CS6 Info Palette & Adjustment Layers

I have searched but can't find an answer to my question so I thought this may be the best place to ask.
When I am using adjustment layers in PS 13.0.3 (mountain lion), I notice that the info palette is not giving me a before and after readout of the adjustment.
e.g. I add a curves adjustment layer and remove some cyan from the highlight end, I can see on screen that cyan is removed but the info palette gives me 2 readings, both the same. This can make it difficult if I want to remove an exact amount of colour. I have the info palette is set up the same as every previous version of photoshop I have used, 1st reading actual colour, 2nd reading cmyk. I know this is a bit difficult to explain so I have included an image showing the palette, CS6 on the left and CS5 on the right, same image, same coordinates. CS5 is showing that 4% cyan has been removed, was 18% now 14%, CS6 is showing what it is now.
I work in prepress and do a lot of colour correction for books and magazines so I need to know the before & after readings. Is this a bug/feature??

I'm having this same problem as well.
Two of our macs have this problem and two do not.
The two macs with this problem are:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 2.93 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    96 GB 1333 HZ DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
The two macs that work correctly are:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 3.06 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    96 GB 1333 HZ DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
Does anyone know what might cause this problem?

  • CS5 problem Adjustment layers only affect one layer instead of all

I am getting this problem with Photoshop CS5 I think one of the settings got changed by accident but for some reason I cannot get any of the adjustment layers Levels,Curves etc to affect all layers under them. Instead it just changes the brightness of one layer only which is the one just below the adjustment layer but not all of the others. I use Photoshop for Digital art and I was all of the layers under the adjustment to change the look of the full image instead of just one layer. Is there any way of fixing this problem? I dont know what to do

I think I know what the problem may be:
When you're adding a new adjustment layer the following checkbox is coming on by default:
You probably changed the default for this.  Here's how to change it back:
Make the Adjustments panel visible by clicking the Window - Adjustments menu.
Click the little fly-out menu icon at the upper-right.
Clear the Clip To Layer checkbox.

  • [CS5][Save for Web][Anti-aliasing] Fine lines in exported PSD with adjustment layers

    Hello,
You can reproduce the bug this way:
    - link a PSD with a adjustment (Levels, Brightness/Contrast) layer in your AI file
    - Save for Web, with AA for Art (not text) selected
In the exported image there will be artefacts, white lines usually.
Flattening the PSD or deleting the adjustment layers will solve the problem and anti-aliasing will be applied correctly.
I used CMYK/RGB settings, FOGRA39/Adobe RGB 1998 for all the files involved.

    Hi,
I am experiencing this same problem of pixelated gifs when I use the "save for web" dialog from Illustrator, but this solution has not worked for me. I have tried the trick of using type-optimized anti-aliasing, but it doesn't change the output at all. I've done this from within the "Image size" tab as well as through Effect>Rasterize>Options)Anti-aliasing: Type Optimized. My image is a logo made entirely from text, although for some of it I used "outline path", so I'm not sure if it still qualifies as text...I'm a newbie at this stuff, so the technical details are still quite opaque to me.
Does anyone know of a solution to this that does not require me to add Photoshop to my workflow?
    I'm using Illustrator in CS5, version 15.0.2.
    Thanks in advance
    Jonathan

  • Adjustment layers effects not applying when flattening image or merging layers CS6

So about a week ago I noticed something changed with my adjustment layers. In an image I would make a selection and start using adjustment layers to edit that selection, and then once I was finished, I would merge the adjustment layers together so that I could erase outside areas where the effect was not intended. However, whenever I merged the layers, the effects would go away and the thumbnail preview by the layer title would become blank (gray and white transparent) as if there was not anything on the layer. I messed around and I reset Photoshop, and then I thought the layers were fixed. They were somewhat fixed, except I've started having trouble again. Now I'm having difficulty editing this one image i'm on. It's a portrait with a photoshop-created red mask going around eyes, and I used the dissolve layer effect on the original mask creation which was black at first. Then I selected that selection and made more layers editing the hue, saturation, brightness/contrast, and exposure.
I tried to save the image as a jpeg, and the effects were messed up. The hue and all other adjustment layers seemingly applied, except the dissolve effect does not show up at all. So I tried to fix it manually. I flattened the image first with intention to then save it as a jpeg, but as soon as I flattened the image, again the dissolve effect was not applied. Then I tried to merge the layers, and yet again, the dissolve effect was not showing up. It shows up fine in PSD form, something's wrong with the conversion process. Please don't be mean to me. I'm not great at photoshop, I'm not saying that I am or claiming to be a pro or anything I just want help from people who actually get it. I have CS6 and use a Macbook Pro.

I stopped even trying to read this append. For is seems very complex and overwhelmed my little mind. Please consider including some screen captures showing your Photoshop window with your document that your writing about open and the layer palette shows the structure of the document. For me examples and screen capture of the steps involves involved would be very helpful.

  • Adjustment Layers causing clips to stutter Premiere Pro CC

I'm working on a music video and I have a 2:35 letterbox preset that I added to an adjustment layer. I added this to the adjustment layer and placed it over all the clips so I don't need to apply it to every single clip. Of course that's the way adjustment layers work. But on some parts of my timeline when the play head reaches certain clips it stutters or when it reaches a clip with a simple dip to black transition the clip stutters again. I know its the preset that I have applied to the adjustment layer because when I disable it or remove the adjustment layer or remove the effect from the adjustment layer the clips play fine without any issues. Can some one tell me why this is happening. My computer has more than enough power to handle this. I'm running a 8 core MacPro, SSD drive, 22gigs Ram and a ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card.

    Hi AzzieScott,
Thanks for the link. Please mention, the types of footage you have in your project. If possible, please mention the make and model of the camera if you have captured the footage.

  • CS4 - Dual Monitor Setup - Files open on wrong screen + Preview Adjustment layers

I have various workstations running Mac OS 10.5.8 three run PS CS3, and one runs CS4
In CS4 files always open on the monitor I have allocated for my palattes.  Before CS4, Photoshop would open files on the monitor that my last filed was opened on.  This is highly annoying!!! How can I fix it so that it at least always opens on the same monitor.
(My menu bar is on the monitor I've designated for my palettes menu and not the monitor I do all my color work on.)
Also, any hopes that we will be able to have a preview button for adjustment layers again?  This is highly annoying, and if I'm able to do so when adjusting directly onto a layer, why don't I at least have the option to have a preview button when having an adjustment layer????

Well if you menu bar is on your "second" monitor, it's generally considered now the "first" monitor, and hence most files will open on that screen by default. But sometimes you can make a file open on the other monitor if you have your mouse cursor in the other monitor. So put  your cursor on the desired screen, press command-O and the open dialog should show there, and the image should open there too. Also works if you double click a file on the desktop of the 2nd monitor. (Usually, these are the window opening dynamics as best I can figure).

  • How to merge adjustment layers to several layers and export layers to files

    Hi!
I have now exactly the same problem as below with over 1000 images, I have saved them in .psd that has over 100 layers each. On top of those there is curves and levels layer that affects every layer below. I want to save all images to .jpg for videoedit with those curves at least. I don't want to merge same curves 100 times. Is there a solution in phothoshop cs5 or cs6 available? Would save alot of working hours. All I have got by this far is blank white images of adjustment layers and non adjusted jpg-files.
This discussion was opened in 2010 and I quess this is same problem:
How to merge adjustment layers to hundreds of layers?
    Jul 28, 2010 10:38 AM
Say I have a photoshop File with 100 layers.  And say I created 3 adjustment layers on top of those 100 layers to get the adjustments that i want for those layers.   I'm happy with the adjustments but Then I NEED to merge those 3 adjustment layers to ALL those 100 layers.   Is there a way to easily permanently apply the adjustments to each of those layers without having to do it manually?     I absolutely need to merge the adjustments to the seperate layers because of how the layers are being used in a seperate 3d program.
So far what I've been doing is duplicating the adjustment layers for each layer and merging them to said layers separately.. Anyone have a better way? I wish I could just right click the adjustment layer and Tell it to merge to everylayer it affects  or apply to every layer underneath it!
    Anyone?
    Thanks!
Thanks alot if u solve this!

  • Adjustment Layers Irregularities

    This is a twofold question.
    1. What is the best order to put adjustment layers in?
    2. Are adjustment layers slower than the "old" way?
    More details
    1. Stacking Order
After noticing some irregularities in my render times, I have discovered that it matters A LOT which order you apply effects in adjustment layers--how they are stacked.
For example, I have a simple sequence with 30 CamA/CamB cuts. I want apply an RGB Curves color correction ("CC" below) and Neat Video Noise removal effects to the entire sequence, so I do it in the form of the new adjustment layers--one for CC and the other for Neat.
Here are my observations and render times of the exact same sequence with different stacking orders of the exact same effects:
    0:43  CC + Neat
    2:30  Neat + CC
    0:14  No Effects
    0:15  CC only
    0:42  Neat only
0:30  Neat only - Effects applied to each individual cut with no adjustment layers
I haven't done extensive research on with other effects (I'm hoping someone else, or especially Adobe has). But I couldn't figure out why two similar sequences would take 2 hours and another just 30 minutes since they were very similar and I noticed that my adjustment layers were in different order.
    QUESTION
It's obvious, at least from this limited test above, that the stacking order of effects is important. Only now, after doing the testing, I know that I need to do my CC first THEN my noise removal. But what about with other effects?
    2. Adjustment Layers Slower?
From the above testing, I noticed another irregularity (IMO). In my test result #6 above, when I applied the exact same noise removal effect to each individual clip as opposed to an adjustment layer, my render time was reduced by 33%.
Does using adjustment layers present a render hit when compared to using effects the "old" way (clip-by-clip basis)?

    1. The order actually applies to the effects themselves, as the stacking order can produce different results, depending on the effects used.
    2.  In my tests, no.  I get the same render times whether the effects are applied to the clip directly or to an AL.

  • Bug in Photoshop Action Player affecting some Adjustment Layers steps

I skipped CS4 and when I installed CS5 I discovered a nasty bug had been introduced is Photoshop's Action facility most likely in CS
    4.
Action that add adjustment Layers clipped to the current layer that step is recorded Make adjustment layer with Clip.
Action that add adjustment Layers not clipped Step records as Make adjustment layer.
When a step Make adjustment layer with Clip is played back that is what Photoshop does.
When a step Make adjustment layer is played back what Photoshop does is look at the adjustment panel clipping icon state and and if
it is clip to current layer Photoshop does clip the adjustment layer to the current when is should be applied to all.
Many of the actions I have created add adjustment layer applied to all then later clip them to the current layer. These actions
genearate an error message if the Adjustment panel clipping icon is set to clip. Because the layer get added clipped, clipping the adjustment
layer  it is not available. The strange thing is the layer is clipped the way I want it to be. But actions I recorded where I want the adjustment to
apply to all are clipped and the is no error message just wrong results.

To avoid the problem you described, i always leave
    the  Clip to Layer unchecked.
That way you never have to worry about those errors.
I just let the actions dictate clipped or not.
If i want to clip a layer, i just do it myself using the button circled in red.

  • Adjustment layers not editable?

I have just upgraded to CS4 and am trying to add an adjustment layer, but when I click on the icon at the bottom of the palette and select Hue / Saturation I don't get the actual adjustment any more.
All I get is the adjustment layer showing in the layers palette.
I can click on Edit Adjustment... BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. I don't get the adjustment dialogue.
I have tried adding an Adjustment Layer from the Layers menu, but I still miss out the dialog stage and end up with the adjustment in the layers palette but again no way to edit it.
Is there a new way to add adjustment layers?
Is there a new hidden preference somewhere?
    I am using a Mac with OS 10.5.7 and a 2 x 2.8 Ghs Quad-Core Intel Xeon MacPro.
    Any ideas?

  • Changes in Adjustment Layers in 8

It seems to me that the use of adjustment layers in version 8 has changed and not to the better.  When working with an adjustment layer, it used to be possible to decide if you liked the effect before accepting the adjustment.  One simply clicked "OK" to apply the adjustment.
In version 8 any adjustment that is made is automatically applied to the image.  If one is dissatisfied, it is necessary to delete the layer and start over.
Am I right or is there a "work around" that I haven't found.
    Mary Lou

I find that the adjustment layers are more useful in v.8, when combined with other tools.  Deleting them, and location of palette on screen, have changed as has been pointed out. However on can build on a basic adjustment layer with presets. Try this:
Make a selection with the selection brush, lasso, or magic wand
Add an adjustment layer, e.g. levels, without any change
Access the smart brush, and one of its presets. If the selection in step #1 is a sky in the picture, the preset "sunset" (nature>sunset) can be applied to get a sunset effect. As always, adjust blending mode and opacity. Note that the name of the adjustment layer has changed as well!

  • Multiple adjustment layers vs. multiple effects on a single adj. layer

I posted this earlier on the Creative Cow forums, and came back with inconclusive answers...
If I have the exact same clip in 2 separate comps...In Comp 1 I have 5 color correction effects on a single adjustment layer, and in Comp 2 I have 5 adjustment layers with the same effects, 1 effect each spread over the 5 adjustment layers (in the same order). Should I theoretically expect to get the exact same image in both comps?
Here's the reason I'm asking. I'm doing some color correction that occasionally involves a lot of keying, which I'm doing in Colorista II. It's not green/blue screen keying, it's keying the shot footage for adjustment, e.g. skin tones, backgrounds, blown-out highlights, etc. I'm finding that in order for the Colorista II keyer to work based on previous instances of effects calculations (i.e. Levels, Hue/Sat, or other Colorista instances, all of which occur *before* the key) I'm having to put it on another Adjustment Layer for the keyer to take the earlier effects into account. Otherwise, if it's on the same adjustment layer, the Colorista keyer disregards the previous effects & uses the un-effected clip as the source for the key.
I don't know if this is just the way the Colorista II keyer works, or if this is a global After Effects-wide order-of-operations thing that I don't fully have a handle on. I understand order of operations, and that Adjustment Layers affect all layers below it, and all that stuff. My question is, what (if anything) is the difference in behavior between multiple effects on a single adjustment layer vs the same effects spread out over multiple adjustment layers? Is it predictable & consistent? Or is it just common knowledge (to everyone else but me) that sometimes you have to use multiple adjustment layers based on the specific effect combinations that you're using?

I don't know if this is just the way the Colorista II keyer works, or if this is a global After Effects-wide order-of-operations thing that I don't fully have a handle on.
As far as I understand the SDK, it is not considered practical, since it would require a plug-in to establish its own comp buffer outside the main rendering pipeline, which could lead to issues with color consistency and things like premultiplied vs. straight Alpha. I also seem to remember that as of CS5 it is actually no longer technically possible. Hence effects that use specific source footage API calls will bypass any previous effects and directly operate on the source.
My question is, what (if anything) is the difference in behavior between multiple effects on a single adjustment layer vs the same effects spread out over multiple adjustment layers? Is it predictable & consistent?
The result should be the same under all circumstances, assuming all adjustment layers have the same opacity and no masks and their stacking order is equal. Only when you apply masks or adjust the opacity to fade specific adjustments you will see differences. It is also to note that having all effects might be a bit faster and more efficient, since less data is passed from buffer to buffer...

  • Adjustment layers in CS6

when I try to open an adjustment layer the working panel on the right of the screen comes up with a strip showing a thumbnail  of my photo, but there is no link and no white rectangle. What is wrong?  Peasashjoan

It sound like you have set one Adjustment Panels fly-out menu option at one poin in time. Adobe introduced Bugs in CS4 they don't seem to want to fix. The Adjustment layer was added to your document at a point in time that Adjustment Panel Fly-out menu Item Do not add Layer mask was most likely checked.  If the Layer was added by an action it or script it may well have been added differently the the way the action or script was created to work.   To create actions that add adjustment layer these days you need to edit the actions and change the way Adjustments layers are added.  Actions need to add them in a way that how the fly-out options are set is not relevant. In other words all-way have an active selection present when an action add a adjustment layers. The layer will have a Layer mask. And All-way record adding the adjustment layer using the layer menu Layer>Add Adjustment Layer>Type and check the clip to previous option is the popup add adjustment layer dialog. That way the Adjustment layers will be clipped.  If you record an action that add an adjustment layer any other you have no way of knowing how the layer will be added if you using a version of Photoshop newer the CS3.
These option need to be removed from the Adjustment Pane;l Fly-out menu they break thing that depend on Photoshop behaving like it historically did.  Photoshop may now be set to work in different ways  How new or old actions and scripts that add adjustment layer will work is a crap shoot for Actions and Script can not set or even check on how Photoshop is currently set to work.
My Advice is forget these options exists and leave them set at the default settings and Photoshop will work just like it always did before CS4....
