Remove default stacks, display shares in sidebar, time machine in menu bar

Hey everyone,
I'm setting up a couple laptop labs for a school with Leopard and have run into a couple minor issues.
I created a standard user and configured this user as I would like future user profiles to be like. I then copied the Library and Documents folders of the user into the default user template (/System/Library/User Templates/English.lproj/). Everything worked as expected, except for the following...
1) When a user logs in (Active Directory), their dock contains the Documents and Downloads stacks along with Time Machine. I do not want them! I had removed all three from the user I used as a template, but for some reason they seem to still appear with new users. What I would like is a 100% empty dock (minus the Finder and Trash of course). The dock will be populated via Workgroup Manager.
2) Mounted network shares do not show up via the Finder's sidebar. This makes it a little confusing for users to save to folders on these shares as they have to navigate to them a bit differently than they do in Tiger. I had drug all the shares I wanted onto the side bar, but it seems this does not stick once you log out.
3) The Time Machine icon appears in the menu bar. I had gone into System Preferences under the user I used as a template and unchecked "Show Time Machine status in the menu bar" but this does not seem to apply with new users.
They're all relatively minor issues, but if anybody has any suggestions I'd love to see if I can fix them!
Here is a little background on how the machines are set up: The machines are all managed via Workgroup Manager. The Open Directory server is running 10.4.11, but I seem to be able to control the Leopard specific settings by using the Leopard version of the Server Admin tools without any problems. All our users come from Active Directory. If you need any more info, let me know!
Thanks in advance!

yes, i see I replied way before you were finished with this. as you are dealing with a server you might be better off posting in the [OS X server|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96] forum.
I don't understand why your modified dock doesn't stick. i actually have done exactly what you describe in the past with the user template folder and the modified dock was displayed correctly. all you really need for the dock is one file:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
when I copy this file for my current user to the template directory, all new users have the same dock as I do now. same with the sidebar. the file there is
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
I don't think there is a way to keep connected servers in the sidebar once you disconnect. You could create aliases to them while connected and stick aliases in the sidebar.

  • Can't show Time Machine in menu bar

In the system preferences > Time Machine settings, when I try to enable "Show Time Machine in menu bar", the button automatically gets deselected. Otherwise Time Machine works fine, but I can't get it to show in the menu bar because of this. Any idea why this might happen? Is there a way to enable it in Terminal?

Almost all the items put at the top of the screen by selecting 'show' this or that are held in the the preference file I mentioned.
    You can try this:
    1) Take a screenshot to remember what you had (shift + command + 3)
    2) Quit all your applications and save your work.
    3) Just to make sure every is ok go to Applications > Utilities >Disk Utility, launch the application, click the picture of your hard drive, click repair permissions. When done quit.
    4) In Keychain Access set the preferences to NOT show the keychain in the menu.
    5) In the finder go to Macintosh HD > Users > <yourusername> > Library > Preferences >
scoll down to the file called com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and drag it to the desktop. Restart your machine.
    6) Go into keychain access and check the box
You may need to also run keychain first aid.
    Good Luck,

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Suggested edit to hint: Tip - Date and Time in the Menu Bar

The user tip, located here, massively overcomplicates the procedure for showing the date and time in the menu bar.
The simpler way is to do:
    1. Click >System Preferences...>International>Formats.
    2. Next to "Dates", click the "Customize" button.
    3. Arrange the date the way you want it to appear in the menu bar (don't worry about time at this point).
    4. Select everything in the date format box and copy it (⌘C).
    5. Next to "Times", click the "Customize" button.
    6. Select the "Medium" format.
    7. Paste the time format into the box (⌘V), and customize it to appear as you wish.
    8. Click OK.
That's it. No Terminal, nothing complicated.

Any chance you figured out how to do this for Snow Leopard?
I did this before, and when i migrated i could see that the change i made in Tiger, carried over, (that is there was a date in my medium clock setting) but it doesn't show in the clock in my menu bar...
    Is there a fix?
Maybe Lion will bring this back... or better still offer the ability to put what we want with less complication?

  • Default admin user when restoring from time machine backup in setup assistant

    Hello,
Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere.
I will soon take delivery of a new iMac running Mac OS Mountain Lion, and I will want to restore my full Time Machine backup which was made on a MacBook Pro (which was my main machine, but is now faulty - it was running Snow Leopard).
On the MacBook Pro I had 2 user accounts.  Mine which was the default admin account (named Ian Johnson), and my wife's which was a standard user account.
Now, I know that I should use SetUp Assistant to restore user accounts etc from the Time Machine backup, but I'm wondering whether during that process I will be asked to create another admin user account when I first run SetUp Assistant.  Ideally I would like to end up with exactly the same user accounts as on my old MacBook Pro.
The reason I'm asking in advance is that I believe it's hard to "undo" whatever default admin user account you set up on first use of a new Mac, so want to be prepared.
    Any help appreciated, thanks.
    Ian

I'm wondering whether during that process I will be asked to create another admin user account when I first run SetUp Assistant.
You won't be, provided you go straight into Setup Assistant the first time you boot the new machine.

  • I remove a disk from excluded items in time machine, save, and it does not remove it. Why

after the upgrade, time machine cannot use the extern disk in the backup.
It naturally excludes the external disk. I used to be able to remove the exclusion. After time machine I cannot.
The time machine preference is problematic. It shows the disk as remove, and calculated the space it will take to backup. However the save button undoes the selection,,,,, without showing that.

Thank for the link. I am fully aware of this problem. However this link does not provide a solution to my problem.
I did all the things it suggested. I went over every detail with Western Digital tech support. Once the WD software is removed. And the firmware upgraded. And formated with Apple Format, and partitioned, and GUID and and and. I can transfer files without any difficulty in all circumstances; BUT  ONE AND THAT IS WORKING WITH TIME MACHINE NOT ALLOWING THE BACKUP OF THE DATA ON THE WD DRIVE.
This is a Time Machine program error. If the disk exist for all other purpose, it should exist for Time Machine. It is a error to for Time Machine preferences to reverse a user selection. It needs to be fixed.

  • Default audio devices are gone after time machine restore

I recently purchased the new macbook pro 13". I restored from a time machine backup but now have no sound. When I go to the Sound settings in system preferences the default (built in mic and built in speakers) are nowhere to be found. The screenshot below shows my sound settings panel. There are some sound drivers for other devices but not the default meaning I can't get any audio out of the macbook pro built in speakers.
Any ideas on how to reinstall drivers or get these back?
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

The TM backup was from the aluminum 13" macbook from just before the refresh at the WWDC 09. I originally tried to use the migration assistant but it would freeze everytime I tried, right after it asked for my username and password. I then used the install disk to boot and then chose restore from time machine backup in the menu.
You mentioned that I need to do an 'archive and install'. What do you mean by archive? It's mostly the system settings that I am concerned about, everything else is backed up.

  • Display file count on time machine

How can I see how many file are still remainingfom being backuped?
When you run time machine for the first time you could see how many files ar left, but once you use TM over and over... Where can find that information?

You can't -- that's not shown anywhere except on the first backup.
Doesn't the "xxx GB of yyy GB" under the progress bar on the TM Prefs window (or by clicking the TM icon in your menubar) give you a pretty good idea of how it's progressing?

  • I am not able to view the default view of FF 4.0, It is showing menu bar with the windows border. When i turn off menu bar, the strip which should be present above the tabs goes missing.

I have recently downloaded FF 4.0 and using a lot of add-ons. I am not able to view the default view of FF 4.0 with no menu bar. Even after turning off the menu bar from customization, I am able to see only the tabs and FF button, but not the strip over the tabs.

When you hide the menu bar to display the Firefox button, the titlebar (strip above the tabs) is only displayed if the Firefox window is not maximized. If you always want the Window titlebar, you can use the Firefox 4 UI Fixer extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-4-ui-fixer

  • Date and time missing in menu bar

From time to time the date and time disappear from the menu bar.  Other times most of the items disappear from the menu bar.  What causes this?  Yes, a reboot puts them back but a reboot should not be necessary.  Any thoughts?

    Might be corrupted preferences ...
Type or copy and paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
Then monitor the time and date in the menu bar.

  • HAVING A HARD TIME WITH SPRY MENU BAR

Could someone pls help!?? I'm constructing a site using the spry menu bar, but it simply does not seem to work. I've created the menu bar on my index page, and then copied it to all the following pages. The problem is, that when I click on the 1st item the link works fine, and a new page opens - when I click on the 2nd item (on the recently opened page), the link does not work and an error page displays. As far as I can see the problem is: the files are kept in a folder, the 1st page opens /folder/file - but the 2nd page opens /folder/folder/file (the folder occurs twice in the path, as if the site does not "reset" the first link, before opening the second). I've checked the links, and everything I can think of, without finding a solution. I've uploaded the relevant pages to my site: www.kiriwdclient1.com (trying to find the error, I inadvertenly errased all my changes to the spry-css, thats why its the basic version on the pages).
    Thanks for any help.

  • Date as well as time on Finder menu bar

That is, without having to click on the time. I have wanted this for years. There is plenty of space on the finder's menu bar. Any ideas?

Found it (from a prompt concerning earlier posts). The answer is: Preferences - Date & Time - Show date and time on menu bar - Date options - Show date. (I missed that).

  • How to permanently modify or erase the function of "share current page to" on the menu bar and right-click menu??? Need help!

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Re: suggested edit to hint: Tip - Date and Time in the Menu Bar

    Hi Josh
Funnily enough I had to set up a new machine for my daughter a month ago, and used precisely this (GUI) method.
I haven't tried it in Tiger, but am assured by several people it also works there. I believe some people were able to do something similar with 10.3, at least with later versions, but I and many others (on another forum) could not get it to stick.
That led to us investigating which preference files were involved, and the discovery that two were involved: hence the need for the killall SystemUIServer. The Terminal method turned out to be the only reliable method for early versions of 10.3.
Things have moved on, and while the Tip still works I do not think it warrants being a "Featured Tip", at least in the Tiger and Leopard forums. So maybe your new version should appear there.

Yes, I did it originally in Tiger.

OK, so I guess we should put it in the 10.3 forum-or maybe not-I think people who use 10.3 and would be on the forums would either be people supporting, who probably already know how to do this-or how to find out, or users who don't really want to mess with Terminal--but we should probably remove it from the Leopard and Tiger forums.
