Remove .DS_Store files

On my iMac ios 10.10.1 I now have a Desk-Top Icon and a Finder Application file for .DS_Store. Both show in a faded text. Tried to put in the trash, but they just pop right up. They are not hurting anything that I can tell, but I want them gone. Any thoughts........

You're not understanding what those files are all about. Those previously HIDDEN files (indicated by the leading period) are now hidden again, they're not gone. Can't explain why they were made visible.
FYI, every time you open a folder that hidden file, which contains how the folder view settings and other things are set, are updated, or, if the folder was never opened, then it's created. BTW, I tested Niel's script  and it works here. What did or didn't happen when you ran it in AppleScript Editor?

  • Blocking or removing .DS_Store files

Noticed today that when our mac users mount File Folders with webdav, they're littering the .DS_Store files all across the filesystem. They then show up in the web view. Is there a function somewhere to either block the .DS_Store files from being created on the webdav directory, or to hide them if created?
I know we can go machine to machine and block their creation via a terminal preference setting, and we might do that the next round of imaging, but we've got too many to do in a short amount of time.

I have not done any configuration of DAV on Tomcat, but I have an idea about
another way you could do this.
We use an Apache httpd to reverse-Proxy our HA-Teaming-boxes, and I'm pretty
confident (means: would have to dig into that to confirm) that in the Apache
config you are able to filter/drop/ReWrite requests that contain the
    ".DS_Store" value in them.
To use Apache httpd like that, follow
    http://www.novell.com/documentation/...a/bktg8a9.html
and just configure one BalancerMember for the Cluster.

  • What are .ds_store files and can they be removed?

What are .ds_store files and can they be removed?

Probably the easiest way is to use Onyx.
If you show invisibles you can see ds_store in each folder.
Open Terminal.app (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and copy & paste this command at the prompt...
    sudo chflags nohidden
    Press return.
    The reverse is
    sudo chflags hidden

  • How do I create a new .DS_Store file for the Desktop?

I have an account, in this case it is the System Administrator account (which I seldom use), where the Desktop icons all scrunch up to the right side of the screen. I can re-arrange them, but when I log out and sign back on, the icons are shifted back to the right side of the screen. I thought perhaps I had a corrupted .DS_Store file that needed to be removed. However, it turns out that I can find no .DS_Store file to remove for this account. Finder just doesn't seem to be able to create a new one. I'm not sure how or when the old one disappeared.
Any suggestions how I can get the Finder or something else to create a new .DS_Store for the Desktop so that icons will stay put?

I think I found an answer (not a solution) to my problem. Consulting with Apple Support, there is no way for the System Administrator's desktop to "remember" the positions of icons from one session to the next. They will always move to the right-hand side of the screen when you log back in. Apparently this is a change that occurred with OS 10.6.4. No reason by Apple given for the change, nor is it readily apparent to me why the Desktop or Finder in the System Admin account should work any differently than in any other account. Might simply be an oversight or a bug.
If anybody has a fix, I would appreciate learning about it.

  • .DS_Store files on USB thumbdrives - a way to stop them from being created?

    Hello!
Forgive me if this has been asked to death, but at school I need to copy homework files back and forth to the school's XP-based computers constantly. Because in any given day I usually update half a dozen files across the "homework" folder on my Powerbook, it's easier just to copy the entire folder (and its subfolders) to my 2-GB, FAT-32 formatted flash drive each night - all 500 files (and 150 MB). Of course, this also leaves hundreds of .DS_Store and ._filename files to clutter "Windows explorer" windows.
My question is how do I remove (and prevent creation of) these files selectively? I know that they are used by the finder to store thumbnails, spotlight comments, and labels. The big problem is that while I want to remove these files from the homework folder (and some other folders), I DO NOT want to remove them from a few other folders on the flash drive - which I use to make quick backups of files from my Mac.
I know that I can prevent OS X from creating them altogether with certain utilities, and I know that I can get third-party utilities that allow me to remove these files from flash drive and/or prevent the creation of the files for entire volumes, but is there something I can do to remove them from only certain folders?
Also, since I do not always know beforehand what directories I might make, I'd like to be able to create a "white list" of only certain directories (and their sub-directories)that won't be touched, while all others will have their ".DS_Store" and "._filename" files removed.
Finally, because I'm often a hurry when I go to copy files, I'd rather not sit there and run terminal commands or a program every time I copy a folder over to the flash drive. Is there some way to prevent them from being created in these certain folders altogether, automatically? An applescript or terminal command that I can program to run from the script menu perhaps? I don't mind opening a program or script, I just don't want to have to sit there manually removing the files.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

I had a similar problem awhile back and asked for help in the Applescript forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=954738&tstart=0
Unfortunately the revised jive software formatting function here in the forums has totally messed up things like posted scripts. What you'll see in the scripts discussed is no longer what was there originally. I just now put a copy of the script I'm using up in zip format here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/CopyStrip2Fat.zip
Unzip and open in Script Editor to get some idea of what it is really supposed to be. The idiot formatting of the revised jive software has replaced some things with a carriage return, a semi-colon, and close quote, thus rendering some lines meaningless.
To see the source of the script I quoted, see this MacOSXHints thread:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040726164957299
The script is in the comment by cougar718. You might take a look at other comments as well.

  • How to compress or zip excluding '.DS_Store' files

I have to create a zip file in order to upload multiple files to a specific application. Unfortunately, it rejects the zip created on a Mac because it contains
hidden files. Any solutions besides going to Parallels everytime I need to do this. It would be much appreciated.

    Found this:
    http://bechster.com/zip-a-folder-on-mac-osx-without-the-pesky-ds_store-files/
    I've not tried it myself.
The other way would be to make the invisible files visible and remove them first, then zip.

  • Is there a way to list all .DS_Store files for selective deletion?

I routinely run VirusBarrier X6 antivirus software. Every time I do, it gets hung up on a single .DS_Store file for days on end, and I have no way to ascertain where the file is located. I understand that .DS_Store files are hidden and in every folder, so I was wondering if there was a way to list all of them via Spotlight or a Terminal command line. Whenever VirusBarrier has been hung up on a system file in the past, it's been freakishly large. I figured if I could list and sort all of the .DS_Store files, it might help me to pinpoint the one responsible for the hang-up. I know about the Terminal command to show all hidden files, but I do not know how to view them all together in a sortable list by size.
I am also aware of the Terminal command that deletes all .DS_Store files on your computer, but I've read that it may lead to catastrophic results. I'm not looking to cripple my computer over a virus software hang-up.
    Thank you.

I'm not looking to cripple my computer over a virus software hang-up.
The computer is already crippled. Remove the Intego product, which is worse than useless and worse than the imaginary "viruses" would be if they really existed, which they don't, by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version, the procedure may be different.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Prevent .DS_Store Files From Re-appearing

I'm trying to upload a custom WordPress theme to:
However it won't let me because of the hidden .DS_Store files inside it.
I've tried removing them with the Terminal command:
    - find . -name '*.DS_Store' -type f -delete
However they seem to reappear for when I upload them? Is there a way I can prevent them from reappearing before I upload the file?

Did you have open Finder windows that regenerate them?
They are required by OSX as far as I know. When I SVN commit, I explicitely have to exclude them as well.

  • Strip resource forks and .DS_Store files from folder

I'm transferring stuff from my Mac to a Windows machine using a FAT32 formatted keydrive, and want to eliminate the various dot files from folders before I copy them to the Windows box. I had tried using a Terminal command, which was tedious and at one point I mistyped something and managed to nuke one of the folders on the drive. After a search, I found this script at MacOSXHints:
    on run
display dialog "Drag a removable disk icon here to have it cleaned and ejected"
    end run
    on open selectedItem
-- get a text version of the volume name and remove the trailing colon :
set volumeName to selectedItem as string
set volumeName to characters 1 thru (the (length of volumeName) - 1) of volumeName as string
if (list disks) contains volumeName then
    do shell script "find '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "' -name '.DS_Store' -exec rm '{}' \\;"
    do shell script "find '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "' -name '._*' -exec rm '{}' \\;"
    try
do shell script "rm -rd '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "/.Trashes'"
do shell script "rm -rd '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "/.TemporaryItems'"
    end try
    try
tell application "Finder" to eject disk volumeName
    end try
    end if
    end open
It worked great, but took a bit of time to run. I no longer need to clean the whole drive again, just specific folders I add to the drive now. Unfortunately I don't actually know how to write Applescript, I can just sometimes adapt an existing script to my needs, but this adaptation is beyond my meagre abilities. Last night I was copying a couple of folders to the drive, then using the Terminal "find execute remove" command to get rid of the dot files after the fact. I would like to have an Applescript droplet, so that I drop the folder onto it and the resource forks are stripped off and the .DS_Store files are removed before I copy the folder to the key drive.
    Any help appreciated!

Make a duplicate of the folder you want to transfer on your hard disk, and then run the following on the duplicate:
    on open droppedItems
    repeat with anItem in droppedItems
if (folder of (info for anItem)) is false then
display dialog (anItem as string) & " was not proccessed." & return & return & "Folders only please"
    else
do shell script "find " & quoted form of POSIX path of anItem & " -name \".DS_Store\" -exec rm '{}' \\;"
do shell script "find " & quoted form of POSIX path of anItem & " -name \"._*\" -exec rm '{}' \\;"
do shell script "ditto --norsrc " & quoted form of POSIX path of anItem & " '/Volumes/volumename/pathname/'"
    end if
    end repeat
    end open
The second do shell script line may not be needed in this variation.

  • Deleating .DS_store file

recently i noticed a .DS_store file in every file i have on mac.I tried to delete it but failed.please suggest a solution

    mende1 wrote:

Pedantic correction. The .DS_store file is a PERMANENT file created inside any OPENED folder which contains all of that folder's view options and settings. Folders that have never been opened don't have one. If you remove it from a folder that was opened, it's gone, and will only be recreated when the folder is reopened.

  • System crash after deleting ".DS_Store" files?

My Finder view options were a bit messed up, so I decided to follow some online advice and delete all ".DS_Store" files on my MBP. I followed instructions on osxdaily.com. Specifically, I typed the following command into Terminal:
    sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;
After the command finished running I tried to restart the computer but it would just show the grey screen with the Apple logo and the progress indicator and not start up properly. I was able to run Disk Utility and verified the HDD. No errors were displayed. I chose "repair disk" anyway, but the computer still would not start up. Entering safe boot mode didn't work either. In the end, I chose to reinstall OSX 10.8 from the Internet. I didn't want to reinstall a backup from Time Machine because there were some files I hadn't backed up yet.
Fortunately my MBP seems to be working properly again, but what's weird is that I had to reinstall every single application. The application files were still present in the application folder but their icons were greyed out and they wouldn't launch.
Does anybody have any idea why this happened? Is it that dangerous to delete ".DS_Store" files? Should I use a different command? I would still like to get rid of those files so I can redefine a default view for all folders.
And is it normal that if I reinstall OSX I need to reinstall all applications as well?

Letting something arbitrarily delete every .DS_Store file on your computer invites bad things to happen.
Running rm is dangerous as is--letting it run rough-shod all over your computer is infinitely dangerous.
I don't know why there is a .DS_Store file  inside an app package, but removing it "damages" the App just as if some malicious code might write malware into the package. So, it is no mystery why they do not work anymore.
Deleting specific .DS_Store files in folders is not normally a problem.
If you have a problem in one folder that doesn't hold its settings, deleting the .DS_Store file is ok.
Here's how I would do it, though:
    Open the folder and Cmd-F.
If you don't already, use the Other... option in the Criteria popup to add the System Files and Visibility options to the criteria menu (check the box to include in men).
Set the Search criteria to System Files are included and Visibility is invisible.
Type ".DS_Store" in the search field. You should see the .DS_Store file for that folder at the top of the list, and then all the others in the subfolders.
You can delete it from there.

  • I keep getting blue screen and error message to remove this file from system. spooldr.sys

HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - G510n    w/operating system     Windows XP Professional
I installed the printer in February and the disk did not finalize the setup process.  I went online and
down loaded the drivers and software that was offered from the HP website.
The printer works, but as the months have gone along, I keep getting updates for the printer and
the system needs to reboot and it does automatically.
Now I am getting a blue screen with a critical dump error message.  HP error reporting keeps sending
the same message back to restore to earlier date before the updates.  That worked for awhile.  Now
HP Error system says that malware has corrupted and needs to remove system file     spooldr.sys
Is this in your driver software.  Spooldr is the system that caches pages of data for printing in chronological
    order....
Can I uninstall my software and drivers and change to the plain & simple, print and scan to prevent the
spool driver from loading to my system?

Thank you for your input.  But, It is amazing that you can tell me that I was infected with  rootkit.
Without information as to how to fix, your information is after the fact and useless.
I used the Safety Scanner provided to me by HP.  A full scan didn't detect any Malware in any files on my system.  But the last screen dump provided the information that   spooldr.sys  was corrupted and  needed
    to be removed.
Coming into HP Form, I did read on the HP website that my system Windows XP Professional was not listed
and noted that the software may have not been just what I needed.  This was the reason for the question
about uninstalling and reinstalling less of the program.  I really don't need my printer to print backward and
that is all I see that it is doing that other printers don't.
Besides, Kudos goes to the person from HP who sent the email,  suggesting I used the HP Update software and drives recommended  for my computer system.  Computer, printer is working, back to normal and hasn't taken a dump since, I uploaded  software and drives for Windows XP Professional.

  • Error 550 when using CFFTP to remove a file

I'm using cfftp to download files which I parse, then I need to delete the file from the server. (coldfusion 11 - development)
I can list, and download the files fine, but am butting my head into a problem that I can't seem to resolve.
USING THE SAME PATH AND FILE NAME that allowed me to 'get' the file - When I try to remove the file - I get this error.
Error: 550 file: No such file or directory .
(again - the path and file name I provide are identical to the path/filename -
if this is a permission problem, I can delete files thru Filezilla, using the same credentials - with no problem)
Here is the call to remove -
        <cfftp  action="remove"
                connection="myConnection1"
                passive="true"
                timeout="360"
                remotefile="#myPath##fileName#"
                item="file" >

I'm not sure where you got the "This is not what the docs say" part.  Looking down the list of CFFTP attributes in the CF11 docs that apply to a "remove" operation, those were the attributes I would have expected to need.  Although I agree the examples could be clearer and a specific example of removing a file would be useful.

  • Cant remove a file from a directory

    hi gems...god morning...
I am facing an issue but i cant figure it out..
I have two users which belong to same group i.e. user1 and user2
Now user1 owns a directory(dir1) and the permission is 775.
Now user2 makes a FTP and places a file(fil1) into that directory(dir1) owned by user1.
The umask setting is 027 and thats why in that directory(dir1) the file permission becomes 640.
But when i am trying to delete that file(fil1) using user1, then it is not allowing me..
    what can i do..please suggest...thanks in advance...

    thanks for replying...
It really looks strange and all i thought it is a code problem..
Means the scenario i have told here is not from the direct access to the solaris box...
It is happenning when a batch job is being called from there. The operations the batch job does is to take the file, do some processing and then remove that file. Everything is getting successful except the last step.
But when I tried from the backend(direct access through putty) then it behaves normally.
So i am confirm that it is a code issue. I have told the developers to check the code.
