Remove duplicate emails and mailboxes

I am moving emails from an old Mac to our new MacBook Pro. My wife has a LOT of mailboxes. It seems to me that when she imported her emails onto our old Mac, from an even older Mac, that mailboxes got duplicated. I think there are mailboxes and folders (with different names) that actually contain the same emails (or mostly the same) as other mailboxes and folders.
I've read some of the threads on the Apple Support Communities. I understand there is a script for finding duplicate emails. But will this only find duplicates within the same mailbox? I don't have this problem. I need to find duplicate mailboxes and duplicate emails within different mailboxes.
I am using Lion and Mail.
Thanks for any help
Mark

Same problem, only one of four accounts (POP) acts this way, and is reloading, and re-reloading, and re-re-re (you get the picture) mail from this account going back to June 07. All marked unread,up to almost 2k of these so far. Running OSX.4.10, dual 2ghz Powermac, 4gb ram, no recently added software.
Thanks!

  • How to remove duplicate emails in Mail

Does anyone know if a good app that works in Lion that will help me remove duplicate emails in Mail?  There are some options on the web that I've found but they don't seem to work with Lion.

I have found a very satisfactory solution to eliminating my duplicates in Apple Mail, which is to stop using it and switch to Thunderbird.
There's lots that I like better in Apple Mail, but Thunderbird is light-years more flexible in managing your email than is Apple Mail, because Thunderbird is an open platform with excellent Add-ons available, which include the nifty Remove Duplicate Messages: http://bit.ly/tbird-dups. It is stupid that Apple Mail hides duplicate messages in the background & won't allow users to search and destroy them. Frustrating!
As a prologue to that, you need the TB import export Add-on: http://bit.ly/tbirdimportexport
Managing my mail locally on my Mac was a huge project for me, involving integrating tens of thousands of emails. Mail was  from gmail, yahoo, and many years of Outlook PST files.
Now that the project is complete, I'm very happy with Thunderbird to manage my email archives. Though I actually would prefer the Lion Apple Mail interface for day to day use, it just isn't flexible enough.

  • Removing duplicate emails in Mail

While attempting to back up my Gmail -- which is at capacity right no -- I accidentally reset the POP setting and downloaded all my mail again.
So now I have 160000+ emails in my mailbox in Mail. I would like to weed out the dupes, and after a bit of Googling, found Mail Scripts (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16217) and started running the Remove Duplicates script.
Everyone said it was slow, but after leaving it running all night it had found only 119 duplicates! Is there any other program that will remove the extra mail, or there some way to shorten the process? It seems like my mailbox is just too big for this script to handle.

Just a thought, but take a look at your Mail Menu "View", select columns, then make sure it has both Date Received and Date Sent checked. Then compare duped messages and see if the date/time is the same on both. I haven't had this problem, but if the Date Received is different on the second copy of the duped email, you might be able to sort on Date Received and mass-delete the dupes...

  • Remove Duplicate Emails from the server

Several users have multiple copies of the same message in their inbox. Collecting External Mail and then copying the same email. Is there a way to look for duplicate messages and then delete them?

    I am running 6.1
Its not disk space but several users have collected or copied old mail boxes several times so now their message counts are in the 10 of thousands with half to three quarters of their messages being duplicates. I was just wondering if there was a server mechanism that would allow a scan of a mailbox and a removal of duplicates. I know that there are programs that will run on a windows client that do this but I was hoping to fix this without going that route.
Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

  • Removing duplicate emails

    Hello all,
I have looked on the web but I cannot find any solution to my problem, 'How to remove duplicate mails from my mailboxes'.
Most are empty mails with the actual message not downloaded from the server. It would be great if an app. existed that could remove all these messages.
    Thanks
    olav

The most comprehensive way to approach this, is as follows:
    1) Make another New Mailbox, and this time Move all the OTHER messages (those you wish to save, anyway) to this New Mailbox.
    2) Delete the first new mailbox you created, if Mail allows -- if not we will deal with this later
    3) Quit Mail, and in the Finder open Home/Library/Mail/this POP account folder, and find the INBOX.mbox folder. Open this folder, and then within it, open the Messages folder. Delete those xxxx.emlx files for the messages you allowed to remain in the Inbox.
4a) Again in the Mail folder, find the file named Envelope Index, and delete it -- do this to any other file with Envelope in the name.
4b) If Mail did not allow the deletion of the first new mailbox, find and open the Mailboxes folder (within the Mail folder), find that xxxx.mbox folder and delete it.
    5) Relaunch Mail, which will announce it is ready to Import your mailboxes -- allow this to continue, and it will not be importing anything, but rather reindexing all your mailboxes.
If you will do, first check the topic where I worked with another on a similar issue at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2835057#2835057
If you open the stubborn message, and click on View in the menubar, place the cursor on Message and choose Raw Source, you can observe all the header characteristics and report. But if you had rather not bother, don't worry about it.
    Keep us posted.

  • TS3276 Why am I receiving multiple duplicate emails and how do I stop this from happening

Why am I receiving multiple duplicate emails after the initial message comes in, it keeps duplicating them. How do I fix this problem?

For the mailbox where you are receiving duplicates ...
Select the mailbox on the left of the Mail window.
From the Mail menu bar top of your screen click Mailbox > Rebuild
See if that helps the duplication issue.

  • Duplicate emails in Mailboxes

    Hi Macxperts,
In my MacMail I have set up 2 gmail accounts. I recieve emails in both accounts, but there is also an Inbox folder created automatically. So any new mail appears in the inbox folder as well as in the "all mails" folder of the gmail account. Also, deleting from one folder does not delete from the other. I have to delete it from both folders. Basically it seems that there are 2 copies. Also, the inbox folder is not listed in the gmail account folder. I want the inbox folder inside the gmail account and get rid of duplicate emails.
    Any clues?
    Thanks.

All Mail is a Gmail folder that keeps everything, even if you delete it.
You can disable that folder from showing on IMAP and also tell Google to delete the email you delete by going to the Gmail web interface settings.

  • When I downloaded Mavericks I lost a whole bunch of emails and mailboxes

Lost some old unarchived email messages and mailboxes can't find them on the computer and not sure what to do?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Will Match remove duplicate songs and duplicate albums and make them into one?

I have a ton of songs and albums that are like that. Some albums have differnet artwork too. Will match compare these to itunes and make them all unified?

The only exception is that If it finds an *exact* duplicate (tags and all), it will not upload it; however, it will still leave both copies in your original library (one will have a little cloud with a line through it next to it).

  • Why am I sometimes sending duplicate emails and why when I sometimes single click an incoming messages to view it in the viewer window  why does it open?

My computer got very touchy a few days ago as in the finder or in mail I would single click to select an item and it would open (rather than alloiwng me to just select it) or I would command select to select several items and they would open before I finished.
I did a complete reinstall and finder part of the problem is gone, but it still exists in Mail.  Also before the reinstall just about every email I sent would duplicate-- not it only happens occaisionally.
Anyone got any ideas-- thank you

Hi, ybg, and welcome to the Community,
Your detailed report (thank you) indicates to me your account has been compromised a second time.  Change your Skype account password immediately if you have not already done so, as well as that of any saved payment method on file.  I would also run a maintenance cycle on your computer/laptop, ensuring all patches and updates are installed.  Also run your preferred anti-virus/malware/spyware suite using the most recent virus signature files available.
You are right to contact Skype Customer Service to report this incident.  I have read that people experience problems reaching them, however please do continue to do so, choosing a different path through the various steps than you used the first time; try also using a different web browser.  I have also read that the instant message chat sessions with Customer Service agents appear as a pop-up dialogue box, which needs to be enabled or the connection to the agent will not process.
Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
As a general proactive precaution, I would recommend reviewing how you access the internet, particularly seeking any vulnerabilities or patterns common to the first incident and this one.
    Regards,
    Elaine
