Remove Duplicate Songs

If you are using iTunes app to remove duplicate songs, it is a pain in the neck and it will not remove physical files from your music folder.
I have so many problem over the years and bought so many apps and none work like it supposed to work. You can't fix the problem in iTunes app any other Music management app, you have to fix the problem at the source and the source is in your music folders, not iTunes app or any other apps. So I have just designed this app: RDS - Remove Duplicate Songs to do just that. Don't waste your money spending 10-20 dollars. Go here and give it a try. this may take a while, but just go to the view menu and click on the "show duplicates" (http://text2go.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/itunes-show-equalizer.jpg) and then sort by name. after doing that, just go one by one and delete the duplicates, but make sure NOT to erase everything because you will delete all the songs that are duplicated.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.

Fix the library, then syncing should fix the device.

The simplest thing may be to back-up and then restore the iPhone. If you don't fancy that then remove all media that is currently synced to it, then double check and manually remove any media that remains on the device, before reselecting your sync options.

'Show duplicates' is now under the 'View' menu. To see the 'Date added' column go to 'View options' from the 'View' menu and check it in the section under 'Stats'.
Click an audiobook once to select it and hit command-i (Mac) or control-i (Windows). Go to the 'Options' tab and set 'Media Kind' to 'Audiobook'.

The show duplicates/show exact duplicates features have been left out of iTunes 11. Rumor suggests they will be restored in the next build. In the meantime I have written two Windows scripts to make playlists of Duplicates and Exact Duplicates, either from a selection of tracks or the entire library.
If you want to manually remove duplicate tracks use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist. Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file.

I've consolidates my music in Itunes 11.01. Playlists are just getting crazy with duplicates.
I want to eliminate duplicate music files, as well as eliminate the references in the interface.
Then sync my new IPad.
When I manually erase a duplicate in Windows Explorer, I'm left with a "!" indication in Itunes that the file cannot be found... duh.
I want to find either an easier way to eliminate duplicates without Windows Explorer, or
a way to select all the "!" references in Itunes interface and delete.
Help please from a completely organized person who hates Apples "intelligence" at thinking it knows what I want, and not providing
adequate help under "remove duplicates" in its help index.

I would do it manually. As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes. It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

Easy way to remove duplicate songs

After a no of ITunes disasters (most of which I suspect were my fault) I have no ended up with a full library which has a lot of duplicates songs. Being an essentially lazy person is there an easier way to sort them rather than simply displaying the duplicates and deleting one by one

I doesn't appear to have been tested with the latest itunes although it would probably work OK.
Always backup you files before doing this kind of thing in case you don't like the result.
