Remove duplicates in "Compilations" folder

I have found a lot of duplicate files in the ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Compilations folder. Most of the discussions I have found ignore files in the Compilations folder. Are there any utilities to handle this chore, I have over 4,000 songs.
Also what is the function of the Compilations folder? I notice there is a scheme for naming files, e.g.
X.m4a X 1.m4a X 2.m4a
Can I assume that the X.m4a version is the one used to link to a playlist?

It appears that if a song appears in both the Music Library and in the Compilations folder, the song in the Compilations folder can be moved to Trash to save space.

  • Duplicates in iTunes folder but not iTunes

    Hi,
Through Spotify I figured out that my music library on my Mac contains duplicates of many of my songs. Since this is a problem in the User > Music > iTunes folder, the usual "Find duplicates" won't help. I have over 5,000 songs, so is there any way to isolate and remove duplicates within the folder?
    Thanks!

Use File > Add Folder to Library to add the iTunes Media folder to the library.
Existing tracks will be ignored, new tracks will be added.
Use the Option+File > Show Exact Duplicates feature to show exact duplicates.
Sort the list on Date Added.
    Delete the duplicates added today.

  • HT1229 The library folder recent imported duplicate photos, how do you removed duplicate imported photos?

I have had photos , photos albums, or folders deleted in the past, and I have somehow recaptured them by a way that is unknown or clear to me.  Anyway I imported them to the library and it is now in the the library folder recent last 12 months imported.  There are thousands photos are shown duplicate, how do I removed or organized the duplicate photos in a shortcut  without going through all of them ( 23, 000 of photos imported), and secure them in a folder/location/area without loosing them again .

If you're seeing these duplicates in the iPhoto window (and not the Finder) you can use these applications to identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported the library.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • How to remove duplicate POP messages in Mail under Mavericks

    Hello
I'm having some significant problems with Apple Mail, and despite having researched widely, I haven't been able to find a solution yet. Here is my tale of woe...
My set up is that I use Mail with 5 separate accounts, downloading all messages using POP. I keep ALL my mail (even the trash) so that I have a permanent record of all conversations, going back more than 10 years - this is about 250,000 emails in around 250 subfolders. I'm running the latest version of Mavericks on a 2010 MBP. I have no intention of moving to IMAP - I need to keep a local archive of all my mail.
A few months ago I was having problems with Mail being very slow to load and search emails. I decided to rebuild the mailboxes, but afterwards discovered that thousands of messages in the inbox of one of my accounts (and some of the sub-folders) had disappeared. Once I realised I tried to go back to a recent Time Machine back up, but, for whatever reason, that part of the back up hadn't worked properly and I was unable to recover the previous status. I left it while I decided what to do, and had time to deal with it...
The last 2 years worth of emails on that account were still archived on gmail, so last week I decided to try redownloading the whole lot (something like 72,000 messages), and then planned to use one of the scripts I was aware of to remove the duplicates to the trash, and then remove any duplicates in the trash forever. That ought to mean I at least had an archive of the last two years of missing messages, even if I had no record of which ones had been flagged or replied to, etc.
The downloading took about 24 hours to complete, and I now have almost 70,000 messages in the inbox of that account. I also rebuilt all the folders again, which doesn't seem to have resulted in any further loss of messages as far as I can tell. However, I hadn't figured on two things:
    1. Mail 'hides' duplicate messages, meaning that all of the messages I've downloaded are showing as unread, and I can't differentiate the ones I already had in my Inbox, and the new downloads. When I click on those apparently unread messages I can see if they have been replied to or forwarded, etc, but there's no obvious way for me to remove the ones I have already dealt with to the trash, without going through them all manually, which is clearly impossible.
    2. The scripts I'd found for removing duplicates don't work. Andreas Amann's Remove Duplicates script doesn't work under Mavericks, and he has abandoned the project. I've also tried the remove-duplicate-messages.scpt made by Jolly Roger (http://jollyroger.kicks-***.org/software/), and while it *sometimes* works on individual subfolders on my Mac (but as far as I can tell removes the duplicate in that folder, rather than the newly downloaded version), mostly it doesn't work at all - it creates a 'Remove Duplicate Messages' folder on my desktop, a log inside it and a folder for removed messages, but nothing appears in the duplicates folder.
So, I'm left in a position where I have 70,000 apparently unread messages in my Inbox, a massively bloated Mail library (which has pretty much doubled in size, because of the 'hidden' messages), a slow and unresponsive Mail program. I've come to the conclusion that there must be some corrupted email somewhere, which probably caused the original email haemorrhage, and may still be causing the inability to remove duplicates. Mail is so slow as to be almost unuseable.
I figure I have a number of options:
    1. I could live with the situation and just archive most of the Mail in my inbox, with the side effect that there will be a bunch of messages I have never replied to that are missed.
    2. I could abandon the last week's efforts and revert to the version of Mail I was using a week ago, and then redownload the recent emails from my various accounts. That would still leave me without those thousands of emails I lost on my local machine.
    3. I could find another way to deal with this. Can I get the remove duplicates script working? Should I revert to the version of Mail from a week ago, download ALL the messages again, but do it in a way that allows me to find the duplicates and remove them? Should I move to another email program altogether (which would presumably be massively disruptive to my work!)
Anyway, apologies for the essay length of this request, and thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer!

    hi Eric
thanks for the tip, but I don't think that solves my problem, which is that Mail apparently hides the duplicates, so they're still there, you just can't differentiate or remove them. I actually *need* the duplicates there so I know I've got everything, but then I need to be able to move the ones I know I've dealt with from my inbox to an archive/trash, and/or remove them completely so Mail isn't totally bloated

  • HT2905 i have just followed all the insrtuctions in support to remove duplicates from my library but now most of my musicis gone except for my recent purchases. How come and how do i fix it?

i have just followed all the instructions in support to remove duplicates from my library but now most of my music is gone except for my recent purchases. How come and how do i fix it?

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • Reduce project, Remove duplicates and Replace Source

I'm moving a project from FCP7 to PPCS5 and I'm running into an issue. importing an XML from FCP7 brings all the project assets in to one folder, but I'd like to orginize them along with all of the original source in specified Bins (Footage, Audio, Graphics, etc). I'm use to the project management tools in AE where I could reduce a project and it would remove duplicates replace the source automatically. How do I do this in Premiere?

Hey David, I'm sorry, I typed the wrong example in AE. In After Effects, there's an option to "Consolidate All Files." From the AE manual:
To remove all duplicate footage items from a project, Choose File > Consolidate All Footage. After Effects considers footage items to be duplicates only if they use the same Interpret Footage settings.
When a duplicate item is removed, layers that refer to the duplicate item are updated to refer to the remaining copy
I'm looking for this in Premiere, without having to copy all the source in the Project Manager.

  • Remove duplicate photos from photos

I upgraded to OS 10.10.3 which then allowed me to move my library of 10,000+ photos from iPhotos to the new Apple Photos program. After I moved the library I noticed I had some duplicates in my library.  These duplicates are not from the upgrade. They were there before the move.
A year ago I used Duplicate Annihilator, a third party app, to remove the duplicates from iPhoto. It went through the iPhoto folder on my hard drive, identified the duplicates and allowed me to remove them. I cannot use this program/app now because there are no folders on my hard drive for Photos. They are all stored in iCloud.
Any suggestions on how to identify and remove duplicates on iCloud in Photos without going through my library of 10,000+ photos individually?

Not yet, but there should be one soon called PowerPhotos.

  • Remove duplicate emails??

Every once in awhile something inside of mail triggers a re-download of mail from the server. It happened today and down I have 10,000 +/- duplicate emails all marked as unread. Is there anyway to remove duplicate emails from my download email folder?
    bill

Same problem, only one of four accounts (POP) acts this way, and is reloading, and re-reloading, and re-re-re (you get the picture) mail from this account going back to June 07. All marked unread,up to almost 2k of these so far. Running OSX.4.10, dual 2ghz Powermac, 4gb ram, no recently added software.
    Thanks!

  • Remove Duplicate Songs

    All,
If you are using iTunes app to remove duplicate songs, it is a pain in the neck and it will not remove physical files from your music folder.
I have so many problem over the years and bought so many apps and none work like it supposed to work. You can't fix the problem in iTunes app any other Music management app, you have to fix the problem at the source and the source is in your music folders, not iTunes app or any other apps.  So I have just designed this app: RDS - Remove Duplicate Songs to do just that.  Don't waste your money spending 10-20 dollars.  Go here and give it a try.  Fix problem at the source:  http://thezoovninc.com/Apps.php?AppName=MusicCleanup

this may take a while, but just go to the view menu and click on the "show duplicates" (http://text2go.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/itunes-show-equalizer.jpg) and then sort by name. after doing that, just go one by one and delete the duplicates, but make sure NOT to erase everything because you will delete all the songs that are duplicated.
let me know how it turns out.

  • Remove Duplicate Music Files, But Keep iTunes Copy

How can you remove duplicate copies of music files on your hard drive but be sure to keep the one iTunes is using and keeping the iTunes Library intact?
I have hundred of duplicate music files, using a tool like CleanGenius or others I can get a list of duplicate files, but I do not want to break iTunes Library and only want to remove the duplicates that are not being used in iTunes.

I have the same issue. If I have a file in my music folder and then click on it and it opens in itunes it creates a duplicate file in my itunes library. Besides sorting in finder and deleting one by one based upon folder location is there a less mind numbing way to accomplish this task.
Or do I have to pay the $10 for a program like Gemini?

  • How to identify and remove duplicate plugin effects from AE cs5 please?

    hello,
i installed some trial plug in effects for AE and PPRO cs5
    cycore, boris, trapcode
    the PPRo went great
however, with the AE i get notices that multiple instances of 'such and such' effect
is installed more than one time...there's about 15 that give me a warning each time i start AE...
i tried my best to locate any duplicates but no luck
How do you identify and remove duplicate plug in effects for AE CS5?
    thanks,
    j

    hello,
it is nice when you can answer your own question...
looked in 'common...media core...' and found the new blue trial plugins
also had the duplicates of the new blue plugins in the AE plugins 'effects' folder
deleted the plugins from the 'media core' folder
    no more warning signs...
    cool deal
    back to work,

  • How does one remove duplicate versions of the same songs on an iPhone5?

How does one remove duplicate versions of the same songs on an iPhone5?

    Yes, I use Live Bookmarks.
    This is the RSS http://www.ctech.com/forum/rss.php
Each of those entries at the RSS site show up in my Firefox RSS folder twice. The content of each entry when I go to it is exactly the same. It's not that one is the reply to the original post or anything like that. For instance, see the attached image of the list of items that show up. The highlighted yellow on top is an example. Both of those links display exactly the same original post and replies. Why is that? Is is possible that somehow I'm subscribed twice? Does that make sense? How can I delete the duplicates, or for that matter, clear all those items that show on the list? I just want to see the new ones. Thanks.

  • Script for removing duplicates in Mail

I have thousands of saved messages, of which a great many are dupllicates. I have been able to eliminate many of them using the script provided by Andreas Amann http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/, but large numbers of others resist the script because they are not "quite" identical. For example, if one looks in the .emix files, one may find that one has charset="iso-8859-1" and the other has charset=iso-8859-1 without quotation marks. No simple script is going to catch things like that.
I don't know the cause, but one problem is that I often receive an inbox item from the Exchange server that can't be read: the message appears in the viewer, but won't open. Then, seconds or minutes later, a valid version will pop up and, perhaps, the bad one will disappear. However, I have a rule that automatically copies inbox messages to a local folder. As a result, I have two items in that folder (both of which, by the way, I can usually read). Over time, this means thousands of duplicates.
Another symptom for at least some of the duplicates is that what appear to be duplicates appear in the viewer with variations of my name, such as John Smith in one and Smith, John in the other. I can imagine that this is due to message-handling protocols in my company's Exchange-based system, but actually have no clue. Further, not everyone in the company that uses Mail seems to have this problem.
    Ideas?
P.S., why can't Apple have a Remove Duplicates feature, as it does in Address Book?

I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this thread for background. I can't necessarily claim it is the best, but it is certainly free.
I have another script called FindTracks which attempts to do just that.
