Remove file association - not change it

Hey everyone,
I've been searching the net over the past 2 hours and the solution always comes up as 'change to another default program'
The problem I've got is that I tried to open a VOB file, there was no program associated, so I picked quicktime. Quicktime does not open VOB files. Now the association is stuck.
I dont want to install an application just to open VOB files, I just want the association gone.
How do I remove the assocation permanently?

In addition to the other advice, you could set the default application for .DAT files to an application that cannot open files. For instance, you could, using the Get Info window on a .DAT file, change the default application to Finder (/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder). Then, when you double-click on the file, nothing will happen.
There is a free preference pane, RCDefaultApp, that will allow you to disable the file extension association. It is available here: <http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/>.
If you keep the applications that you need to use to open .DAT files on the Dock, then you can drag the files to the appropriate Dock icon to open them.

  • File associations not roamed using Remote Desktop Server 2012 R2 Standard

    Hello everyone,
As the title mentions, some File Associations does not seems to roam on a RDS 2012 R2 server. We use the following configuration:
    Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Server(s)
Roaming Profiles to a user based network share
Delete cached copies of Roaming profiles [Computer GPO]
So there is no local stored profile after logoff.
Exclude directories in roaming profile [User GPO]
We only exclude "$Recycle.Bin" for testing. So all other profile settings (Local, LocalLow, Roaming) should be roamed.
With the above settings, some associations are, after logoff and logon not remembered. For example .pdf is always restored to MS Word even if Acrobat Reader is chosen as default program.
When we do not delete the cached copy of the Roaming profile [Computer GPO], the file associations are remembered after logoff and logon.
We did a little of research:
When changing the default application for PDF files to Acrorobat Reader, the setting for this user in the registry is:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf\UserChoice
    Hash: BTWAFQFaLiw=
    ProgId: AcroExch.Document.11
After logging off, the NTUSER.DAT for this users does contains the same settings. I guess the settings are successfully roamed to the shared roaming folder.
But after login, the settings are set back to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf\UserChoice
    Hash: mj3iGjB82bU=
    ProgId: AppX86746z2101ayy2ygv3g96e4eqdf8r99j
My suggestion is these settings are not restored in the cached roaming profile.
Someone who recon this and knows if there is a solution for this issue?
Using a Association Configuration File (DISM) with the Computer GPO Setting "Set a default association configuration file", we can set the default program for the users. But this is a global Computer GPO setting and not all users must have the same
    default programs.
Using this setting is no option for our environment.
    Hope Someone can help us.

    Hi,
For this you can make one separate group for all that users and applied the policy setting which you want to setup. But as per me, windows uses the Local and LocalLow folders for application data that does not roam with the user. Usually this data is either
machine specific or too large to roam.  Maybe your thought would be a workaround.
    More information.

  • Lost file associations (Not the old version issue) Win 7 & CS5

Something corrupted my installation of CS5 a month or so ago after it had been working correctly and I lost all the image file associations. Photoshop worked fine but only if I directly opened files from within.  Also all the other image packages were missing from the file association list in the Windows 7 file associations tool, not just Photoshop.   Using the Windows tool to find the programmes dot exe file and create an association also locked up at the select the right package phase.
I have fixed this now and my reason for posting is that several previously suggested fixes in both the MS Windows fora and elsewhere on these Adobe forums were either very complicated requiring direct registry editing or didn't work.  It has taken me a while to find a work-around that worked, hence this post.
    1) Firstly - as is stated elesewhere the obvious answer of simply reinstalling Photoshop over the existing copy doesn't work!  Unfortunately it was a while before I found this out, with several time wasting retries of this as a fix attempt.
    2) Not saying this is guaranteed to work in every case but I ran a 3rd party free Registry Cleaner tool, this appears to have fixed the bug in the registry allowing the Windows 7 File Associations tool to work properly again.  Once that was fixed linking up each graphic type was simple.
Reason for posting is I wasted lots of time thinking the issue must have been a legacy from my earlier instal of a trial version of Master Suite or the older Photoshop 7 being replaced even though my CS5 edition had been working Ok for some time. because this is what is given as the usual cause.  However I think in my case it was after loading and then deleting other graphics software, possibly Real Player, which had grabbed the associations and corruped registry settings somehow at uninstall.  It appears registry cleaner restored the corruption and allowed the standard Win 7 tool to work again.
Hope this can help someone else.

First, let me say thanks to John for posting his experience here.  I think that Adobe does a poor job of managing file associations, given that we do hear of a lot of folks who see them get fouled up due to doing normal things like uninstalling earlier versions.
I'd like to ask, though:  Did you try using the Preferences - File Type Associations dialog in Bridge?
    Curt Y wrote:
Not being a computer "geek" myself I personally can not say it is a bad thing to try
A comment on "registry cleaners" in general:
I am a career computer "geek", and yes, Curt's right:  Registry cleaners in general are a terrible idea.  There are a few that encompass some valuable functionality such as deletion of old files from TEMP folders, but that's something one can do on one's own as well.
It's simply impossible for the programmer of a piece of software to know what information can be safely deleted from YOUR file system or YOUR Windows registry, which is a database.
Nor is it necessary to "clean" a registry regularly, as some say, to keep a system working well.  That's hype, propagated by the registry cleaner makers.  I use a system every day that's on the same installation of Windows 7 that first went in at the end of 2009.  It's stable and fast as ever.  I've even done several hardware upgrades and restored the same OS setup using system image backups just to keep the same fully configured, perfectly working system.
Ever hear people claim they have to reinstall Windows every so often?  One of the reasons could well be that they've used a registry cleaner.

  • Save of edited file does not change file size correctly

I have QT pro 7.6 and have all the latest DirectX and drivers for my PC. I have a problem with file size reporting correctly for edited files.
For example, I have three files: A.MOV (10mb), B.MOV (15mb), and C.MOV (25mb). If I load A and then copy B and C to the end of it, I can do a File Save As to create D.MOV as a self contained movie which shows estimated size as 50mb. And the saved file IS 50mb.
However, If (after appending B and C to the end of A) I just do a "Save" command, A.MOV file size is not changed and still shows 10mb. The whole movie A-B-C plays correctly, but the file size is incorrect. Where is the rest of the data? I know the new A.MOV is self contained because I can delete B and C and it still plays all three segments. I'm concerned that if the file size is reported incorrectly there is the chance that the data will get lost in a future copy or move operation. Does anyone else experience this bug or is it just something in my PC?

I stopped following this issue a few years ago, but as I recall, this is a known bug in the way PSE handles the writing of the tags to the photo files.
I stopped following this issue because I switched to Lightroom which does not have this issue. Yes, you could do this with Exiftool and re-save the metadata from PSE, seems kind of cumbersome.
Also, please note that if you Export the file from the PSE Organizer, as far as I know the proper tags should appear, so if you want the proper tags in your files, you could use this feature.

  • Iak file does not change channel config?

I am relatively new to Lab-View so please bear with me
I have multiple iak files setup for different vi's that require some different ranges on the AI-100 modules I am using (FP-1601 Ethernet module). My problem is when I start a vi, with the iak file path needed wired to the FP-open tag, it does not change the channel configuration from whatever is currently on the modules themselves.
Is this correct? I know I can get the channels to update to the iak file by opening it in FP explorer and editing the device clicking on the channel config and syncing to the file. This will be very tedious for the un-trained test monkey these different programs are designed for. Am I missing some option somewhere that syncs the modules t
o the iak file when you open a field point session?

From a program perspective, the IAK file is solely used to provide channel mapping information. From a FieldPoint Explorer (or NI-FP) perspective, the IAK file contains all channel naming information, communication mapping information and channel configuration information. In FieldPoint Explorer (3.0.2 or less), the only way to change the channel configuration between IAK's, is to switch IAK's in FP Explorer and right click on each (and every) FieldPoint IO Module, choosed Edit This Device and then choose Channel Configuration. When the dialog box asks you whether to use the Device or File settings, choose File. In NI-FP 4.0, there exists an option to download the entire configuration to an entire bank at a time, but there is still no method of downloading the co
nfiguration file programmaticly at run time.
However, another option in the form of the Ethernet Configuration VI's exists. They allow you to programmatically configure each channel (range & attributes). For an understanding of the range and attribute values, you can cross reference the FP-1000/1001 Programmers Reference Manual.

  • ColdFusion Builder 3 - File Associations not picking up a new extension as CFM.

    Hello,
We have this stupid .cfg file extension that is translated as .cfm but I cannot get coldfusion Builder 3 to color code / format the text for this extension.
The file has been added in File Associations and it is setup as a CFML Multi Page Editor but the scripts are still basic black text.
I've restarted builder as well but still no color coding.
I do get .cfml tag insight but just no colors. Any idea how I can fix this?
    Thanks peoplez

They say they fixed this, but the release has been sitting in beta testing for AGES. They said this was fixed last month but they sure are taking their sweet time releasing anything through the update site.
IT's an update site - FOR UPDATES; Ugh

  • File associations not working correctly in Firefox

    Hi,
I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 on KDE 4.3.2 and have configured Firefox to open files with the "xdg-open" tool. That way you should be able to double-click on files in the download list to open them directly.
However, Firefox does not use the preferred applications I have chosen in KDE to open a specific type of file. For example it opens whaawmp instead of smplayer for video files.
When I run xdg-open from a terminal it opens the correct application. Maybe it uses Gnome settings when invoked by Firefox?
How can I fix this, so that Firefox uses my KDE file-type settings?

I don't know how to import the KDE mime-types into Firefox but...
You can change the incorrect associations for filetypes from within Firefox -- from the menu bar select 'Edit > Preferences > Applications'.  Choose the 'Content Type' you wish to change by clicking on it and a dropdown box will appear in the next column.  Then just pick the appropriate program or action.

  • Loop Browser - Removing files/folders not indexed in the Apple Loops Index

    Hi...
I experimented with dragging in a SFX folder to the Logic Pro Loop Browser window. It asked me if I wanted to copy files to the Apple Loops folder or reference the original files, and I selected reference the originasl files.
The SFX files were then listed under the OTHER area of the View menu.
Question... HOW do I remove these SFX files/folder from the OTHER view menu?
I have tried deleting all of the Apple Loop Index files and that did not work.
I have tried deleting the actual SFX files/folders, and after they disappear, but when I restore the SFX files/folders to their source location they reappear in the logic browser view menu.
Is there some where else Logic stores Loop Browser reference data which can be deleted to remove these OTHER files/folders from the Loop Browser view menu?
    Thanks

    Success...
    OK I found the solution.
    1) I deleted the SFX audio files from the referenced HDD source location.
    2) I opened Logic and re-index the Loop Browser.
    3) I quit Logic and copied the SFX files back to the HDD.
When I opened Logic this time, the SFX files/folders referenced under the OTHER menu were gone.
Because I have a huge production music & SFX library, the best way to audition these sources for use in a Logic project, is to audition in iTunes and then just drag whatever I need right from within itunes into the Logic project.
That keeps my Logic loop browser more manageable and focused on composing.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that  you want to update SharePoint field value from a CSV file recursively.
We can import CSV file using the Import-CSV –path command, then update the field value in the foreach loop.
Here is a code snippet for your reference:
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $csvVariable= Import-CSV -path "http://sp2010.contoso.com/finance/"
    # Destination site collection
    $WebURL = "http://sp2010.contoso.com/sites/Utility/"
    # Destination list name
    $listName = "Inventory"
#Get the SPWeb object and save it to a variable
    $web = Get-SPWeb -identity $WebURL
#Get the SPList object to retrieve the list
    $list = $web.Lists[$listName]
#Get all items in this list and save them to a variable
    $items = $list.items
    #loop through csv file
    foreach($row in $csvVariable)
    #loop through SharePoint list
    foreach($item in $items)
    $item["ID #"]=$row."ID #"
    $item.Update()
    $web.Dispose()

  • File Name Not Changing

I am downloading some files via Safari. I then click the file name and paste the preferred name (usually in column view) copied off the Safari window. After a few, Finder stops allowing me to make any changes. I can get the name to open as if it can be changed, but anything I type will not take. I force quit finder and it works ok again. I have had this occur now and again throughout many 10.4 versions. Sometimes I can paste dozens of names, just now I did 1 and it stopped taking the change. Key commands to close windows also then stop working. Though force quit key command brings up that window. Changing name in Info window does not work. Keyboard viewer clicking letters does not work, though keyboard viewer clearly shows the key's typed are recognized. Often these changes pull up a window asking me if I really want to add a particular extension.
Why does this happen and is there a more permanent fix?
Or any simpler fix than restarting the finder?
    thanx

    Absolutely, it can do this.
In the import dialog's filename box, pull down the list and choose "Edit" to edit your filename preset. You will then be able to create a custom preset with a three digit sequence number.
    I've done exactly this myself.

  • Missing Plug-ins...personal file has not changed hands or versions

Of course... almost done with my internship and guess what happens - my file wont open in InDesign. Missing plugins? OK! Haven't had a problem opening my file for 3 months.
I have only opened my file on my personal computer and have only made changes on my computer as well. Now all of a sudden, the file won't open. The ONLY time the file has moved is when I took it in to get a test print done and the person working took the file off of my external hard drive and put it on his desktop - he copied and pasted it (im assuming). I have read in other forums that there may be a problem from going to cs3 to cs5 and I understand that but that's not whats happening in my case. PLEASE HELP!
this is the first promt that pops up
    ...and this is the second.
i have successfully opened up other InDesign files that are on my harddrive with no problems.

idml is the file format that you use to go between versions of InDesign (from CS5 on anyway).
Once you have opened that file in 5.5 and exported to idml you will be able to open it in CS5 and save it as a CS5 document, it will be back to normal.  Bear in mind that some text may reflow and there is a slight chance that something might go slightly screwy.
Once you've done that (assuming you do get a trial of CS5.5) uninstall it straight away to avoid doing this again!

  • Bridge CS5 file associations not correct...

When I try to open an office 2007 document, the default application is set to Thunderbird and when I try to edit it in the Edit>Preverences>File Type Associations, it isn't listed at all. My OS default applicaions for Office 2007 files are all correct, it's just Bridge that I have the problem. Any ideas?

The file properties are correctn and the files open in the oppropriate program when opened via double clicking in Explorer, it's only in Bridge that I have the problem. If I right click the file in Bridge, I have the choice of the correct application and then underneath, Thunderbird (default). So the option is there, it just won't let me make it the default. As seen below...

  • File extension not changing when Save as

    Hi!
I have a strange problem. For example; I have a .psd file open and want to save it as a .jpg file. I choose Save as. The dialogue Save as opens and displays the file name. But when I choose jpg as File format the extension behind the File name doesn't change from .psd to .jpg. I have to manually change it. It's the same with other file extensions.
Is this a bug? I experience the same problem on two different installations.
I use Creative Suite 4, Photoshop version 11.0.1.
    Fredrik

No, I have the "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" disabled. The file name is "name.psd". No double extensions.
I also have tried to change the Photoshop setting "File extensions: uppercase/lowercase" but it's the same.
I think I got the problem when I upgraded from CS3 to CS4. After that I've also upgraded Photoshop to 11.0.1. It's also strange that I'm having the same problem on two differnet installations.
