Remove immediate black screen on hibernate/shut down?

I've just put up with it until now, but today something made me wonder if I could turn off this 'feature'.
Ever since I got this windows 7 computer, when I go to turn it off or hibernate it, the screen immediately goes black. Is there a way to leave the screen on until it turns off so I can see what it's doing? My old XP computer left the screen on until it was ready to turn off, so it's annoying that the newer computer won't even let me see if anything's going wrong. It kind of feels like it's slamming a door in my face.

...I don't think I believe you.
I don't see why you need all that information, and this is the only time I've tried asking about this so you don't need past info on my conversations with HP. Also, you didn't ask for anything relating to what I was asking about, and I'm pretty sure it's a feature of Windows 7, as in all Windows 7 computers do it, so it should have nothing to do with myself.
I might just be being stupid, but the email I got alerting me of the PM just felt like a red flag to me. The forums warn against people pretending to work for HP, and not to give out information, and you two are asking me to, and both say you'll pass it along to someone else. For me to start out asking a simple question on the forum, and then being told to talk in PM's, and then being told to talk in emails, it feels like I'm being led away from HP and public conversations.
If you work for HP and need to find someone specific who knows how Windows 7 works, then please find them and then get them to respond to me in this thread.

  • Dreaded Black Screen and automatic shut-down.  Why does this happen ?

Why do I get a Black Screen and automatic shut-down ?  My iMac felt warm...and I never hear a fan go on..could overheating be why it shuts down?

    Hi Tish,
    A few things.
If you bough this iMac used with no original install/hardware test discs, you can call Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE ask for software sales and tell them you need a set of iMac replacement install/hardware test discs. You'll need to give the Apple rep your iMac's serial number.to get the appropriate discs. There will be around a $16 or $17 U.S. charge for discs.
Since your iMac is still freezing, I now wonder if it is RAM and/or hard drive related.
Your iMac maybe freezing because of serious lack of RAM.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
You only have 1 GB of RAM installed.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard really needs more RAM than this.
Intel versions of OS X use more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.
OS X, running alone (without any other applications running) can use up between 2 and 4 GBs of RAM memory.
Youf iMac model can 4 GBs of RAM, but only about 3.1 to 3.3 GBs of it will be recognized.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Without being able to run the Apple hardware test we have no way of knowing the condition of your iMac's hard drive.
The freezing could, also, be caused from a failing hard drive.
If you do not have any backup of your data, this is the time to create one.
Backup your important data to either DVD discs, flash drive/s or purchase an external hard drive to backup all,of your data to.
You can make an exact clone of the data, on your internal hard drive, using a data cloning like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. OR purchase the external drive and use OS X Time Machine to automatically backup your entire internal drive.

  • Black screen and random shut down

When on battery power my ibook G4 will randomly do one of two things: the display will go almost completely black, or it randomly "shuts down" (although I can still hear the fan) and will not turn back on. For the frist problem closing the lid and putting it to sleep are sufficient to fix it. For the second I either have to hold down the power key in which case it acts like it shuts down, or I have to remove the battery. Both problems happen while on battery power and has happened while running a lot of programs and only a few. I brought it into a an Apple store a couple months ago and the genius reset PMU and reinstalled the operating system as well I think. It worked for a while but has now begun acting up again. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ok so, unfortunately I have no answer (and this is my 3rd try posting this because my g4 kept shutting down) Anyway for about the last week my ibook g4 has been shutting down for no reason. Even w/a full charge. The only way I can get it to restart is to plug it in. I'm also getting a weird error message sometime when it restarts that says "your date/time is set to a date before 2001 so some applications may behave erratically" or something. However, the time and date are set to the current date and time. Also, sometimes when it restarts there is an outgoing e-mail that pops up saying this has not been sent. However it has been sent, according to the sent box and the recipients.
yuk, I hate problems, I don't want problems.

  • Black Screen as if shut down when moved

I've only had my 13" MacBook Pro for one week. When I move it and put it down in another place (which isn't something I do very often) sometimes the screen goes black as if it has shut down. It takes a minute or so of pressing keys, clicking etc. before the screen and other functionality comes back. I installed any software updates available as soon as I had it up and running when I bought it and checked for any again before posting this. I've had a MacBook for nearly three years before this MB Pro and had no problems with it.
    I'm not happy!
    Anybody got any suggestions please?

    This is the solution:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2917
    "Symptoms
If you stack certain MacBook or MacBook Pro computers on top of each other, one or more of the stacked computers may go to sleep unexpectedly.
Depending on when this happens it may appear that the computer is having difficulties starting up. Stacking the computers can result in the top computer going to sleep before it's completely started up.
    Products Affected
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010), MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010), MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008), MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009), MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010)
    Resolution
For best results, do not stack the computers.
When stacked, the magnet in the bottom computer may activate the magnetic switch in the top computer. This is normal behavior. Automatic sleep operation works based on magnets; a switch in the MacBook Pro, known as a Hall Effect switch, is activated when the magnet in the display clamshell gets close to it. This is how your computer knows to go to sleep when you close the display."
I had put my MBP down on top of my old MB! That's what caused it by the looks of things.

  • Random black screens and occasional shut downs on iPad 3

    Hi everyone,
I've had my iPad 3 since early August and I've noticed this problem since I got it.
    First problem:
This happens EVERYDAY. I will be using my iPad and the screen will randomly go blank. There is still noise in the background and when I press the button at the top, it puts it into sleep mode, then I press the home screen and it's fine. This happens at random times throughout the day. Restoring it hasn't helped the problem.
Settings-->General-->iPad Cover Lock/Unlock -turning this OFF hasn't helped the problem even though it seems like that would be the issue. Any explanation?
    Second problem:
This has happened 3 times in the last month and two of those times were this week so it's bound to happen again. This happens when the battery is full so that is not the issue. Anyway, my iPad will randomly shut off and holding down the buttons won't turn it on, no matter what I press, it won't turn on or reboot or anything.
After this happens, I begin to charge the battery, and after about 5 minutes of charging, I can hear that noise that apple products make when they charge, but the noise keep going on and on for a few minutes as if I'm taking the charger in and out of it.
After those few minutes of annoying sounds stop, the ITUNES plug screen finally comes up on my iPad and I connect it to my computer and it restores my iPad.
    I presume this isn't normal,please help!
Is there any way to fix this without going to the apple store? Can anyone relate? Am I missing something?
    Thank you in advance!

If you've already restored the iPad, I don't see what else you could possibly do. Take it an Apple Store, let them evaluate it. Tell them what you are experiencing. If they can't figure it out, you should get a replacement.
None of what you are experiencing is normal.

  • My mac air won't start up.it is frozen right before the log on screen. It shut down fine the time before, what should I do? Does it have a safe mode like windows?

My Mac book air wont start up.it is freezing up right before the log on screen. It shut down properly. I cant figure out what could of caused this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Justin,
Are you getting to the Login screen? Or is freezing up on a blue screen? Are you still at the gray screen? Run any updates recently?
You can try Safe Boot/Mode and see if that does anything - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
The next step would be to try and verify/repair Disk Permissions, but you'll need access to another computer for DVD/CD sharing or an external DVD drive.

  • When my battery is fully charged and i remove the power lead the computer shuts down

When my battery is fully charged and i remove the power lead the computer shuts down, evan when the power lights are fully green on the charger and the battery pack indercating lights.
    Regards

I have exactly the same problem, which started again yesterday; coincidentally the day my warranty ran out!
The situation is complicated for me because I live in rural lincolnshire, but was in London all summer and had a new logic board replaced under warranty last month at the London- Stratford store.
It seems the £400 logic board replacement didn't fix it. When I try to get support, the website just laughs at me and holds out the cup for more money.  I had a chat with somebody in the store this evening and I've got to take it into a store AGAIN!
Perusal of the 'Support' pages turns up literally thousands of people who have this or similar faults, all the way back to 2006, and I've not seen anything yet indicating that Apple have got a grip of it.
I've been using Apple kit for 16 years now and I've never had any trouble until now, but this bloody laptop, which is no better than my iMac now for portability  has let me down badly several times in the last 6 weeks.
I'm really hacked off with this, get your **** together Apple!

  • Why does my system hang on a blank software update screen after I shut down?

Why does my system hang on a blank software update screen after I shut down the computer?
This only happened after my computer attempted to download security update 2013-003 version 1.
I have an iMac with a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running on OSX 10.7.5.
I repaired all disk permission, and then verified and fixed the disk.
My hardware diagnostics program gave all systems a green light.
After all this, the system still hangs.
This must be an operating system glitch.
    How do I fix it?
If you tell me to reload the operating system, then I'll have to go retro with Snow Leopard.
All subsequent updates were purchased from Apple on the Internet and downloaded.

Not so. You use the recovery mode to reinstall Lion. Details in Recovery and About OS X Recovery. Also, see Computers using Internet Recovery.

  • MBP 13" late 2011. when I turn it on it goes to an update screen then just shuts down

Lately I had problems  when I recharged the battery, charging is constantly interrupted... And now, when I turn it on it goes to an update screen, then just shuts down.  O.S: MAVERICKS
    PLEASE  HEEEELP!
    P.D: Sorry for my english.

    LaCalle,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, select the First Aid tab if it’s not already selected, then press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get past the update screen now?

  • Macbook Pro screen is black and will not shut down or boot up right.

Last night my 2007 macbook pro would not go to sleep properly.  When I closed the book the light stayed on and the fan continued running.  Later I shut it down.
This morning the computer turned on but the screen is black.  I tried closing the book but again it would not sleep.  I hold down the power button and it seems to shut down but when I push the power button again the light comes back on and the fan starts up but the screen stays black and there is no powerup sound.
The lights on the battery are lit up.  I tried taking the battery out but same thing.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Try:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Then see if it will boot into Safe Mode. Do not remove the battery unless it's defective.
If none of the above work then you may have a hardware failure so take it in for service.
