Remove master password on Filevault once it is set.

I need to completely remove/disable/turn off the master password for file vault on Leopard 10.5.1 . I see there is the option to change the master password but I don't see how to remove it completely. File vault is turned off for all user profiles.
I saw another post that says
The "master password" is associated with the "FileVaultMaster.keychain" and "FileVaultMaster.cer" in the computer's main "/Library/Keychains" folder. If these files are removed, the system will think that a "master password" has not been set.
Is it safe to really just remove these files to disable the master password? Thanks in advance!

I'm not a FileVault expert, but my understanding is that both user password and master password let you unlock a FileVault image. Deleting those files may equals throwing the key away : only th user password can then ulock the image since there is not certificate associated with the master password.
Well, I may be completely wrong here, but it may help

It is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db and signons.sqlite files that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the key3.db and signons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.
Otherwise you can rename the files to their previous names (signons.sqlite and key3.db
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • I HAD A MASTER PASSWORD ON AND TOOK IT OFF - RECOVERED THE SYSTEM AND IT IS BACK BUT WILL NOT BE REMOVED - DOES NOT RESPOND

BECAUSE THE MASTER PASSWORD IS ON, NONE OF MY PASSWORDS ARE SAVING AND I CANNOT REMOVE THE MASTER PASSWORD EVEN THOUGH I KNOW WHAT IT WAS WHEN IT WAS ACTIVE. IT WILL NOT RESPOND TO REMOVE MASTER PASSWORD EVEN AFTER I ENTER THE PASSWORD ON FILE. I WOULD LIKE TO REMOVE IT SO THAT MY MAIL AND OTHER THINGS STORE MY PASSWORDS AND OPEN MORE EASILY.. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO MAKE THE MASTER PASSWORD GO AWAY - IT WASN'T SAVING MY PASSWORDS AT ANY POINT SO THERE IS NO POINT IN HAVING IT.

You lose the stored passwords if you reset the Master Password because you have forgotten it.
You normally remove the master password by changing the current MP to an empty string.

  • Help with Master Password Rest

I activated FileVault on my MBP and it it rebooted and I am now stuck at the main login screen for the computer... It won't recognize my password, which I verified through my "hint" question... Any suggestions?

Having activated Filevault you should have 2 passwords: the master password for filevault, and your login password which I presume you would have used prior to activating filevault.
If you can remember either of these you should be able to escape!
The procedure if your login password fails is to try 3 times then click on 'forgot password' which will bring up a space for typing the master password and allow you to change the login password.
If you didn't set a master password I assume (without knowing) that you won't need to enter the master pw to reset your login.
It's possible that not setting a master password will mean the total loss of all that is in your home folder if your login is not accepted. This is certainly the case if both login & master passwords are unknown.

  • Can't save master password nor import certificates

    Hi,
I have a problem trying to sign a document with a certificate. I had imported it when I was using Firefox 3.6 and it used to work ok to identify myself to log in to some site. However, I never tried to sign a document with that certificate. (I work with a Mac, in case that is relevant.)
I recently uploaded to Firefox 4, and now I try to sign a document. Ok, so Firefox asks me for my master password. I had not set one (or I can't remember), so what I did is to "reset" the master password. Now, I try to set a new master password: I fill in the fields, click "Accept"... but it doesn't do anything, so the master password can't be set.
Also, if I try to import a certificate (which was removed when I reset the master password), I can choose the file and choose a password for it, but again when I click "Accept" the password is not set: simply nothing happens.
Has anyone else had these problems? Is it a Firefox4 issue or did it also happen before? How can I solve it?
    Thanks in advance!
    jordimp

Hi, I had the same problem, and I read somewhere that according to a mozilla knowledgebase article, the master password is a requirement for importing certificates (although the corresponding KB page is now unavailable)
I tried the following and it worked for me:
    - export the certificates to the desktop
    - delete the certificates from firefox
    - set a master password on firefox (preferences - security - use master password)
    - import the backed up certificates
You should now be able to sign.
    Hope this helps

  • Reset Forgotten File Vault Master Password

Is there any way to reset the file vault master password?
I must have set it about 5 years ago, and the migration tool has moved it to my new machine. I have completely forgotten, and the hint I left myself has me even more baffled.
I remember all the user/admin accounts, just not the file vault one.
    Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

The FileVault Master Password is stored in the
FileVault Master keychain. This keychain is located
in /Library/Keychains next to the FileVault
Master X.509 certificate and System Keychain.
You don't have to delete these files to reset the
FileVault Master Password, just move the FileVault
Master Keychain and companion FileVault Master
certificate to another folder. When you open System
Preferences, it will behave as though you never set a
FileVault Master Password, and will allow you to set
    a new one.
My daughter set me up as a user on her computer that I bought for her when she was 18 with limited access to use only the internet. She has got married and moved to New York in March 2007. She says she can't remember her master password and I am unable to use the MAC to its full without her administrator master password. I have no access to system prefernces when I click on File either.

  • I tried to set up a new account but it has a master password and do not recall setting one how do I change that it will not let me turn it off without knowing the password I do not recall ever setting on. How do I clear the Master Password?

I was trying to set up my mobile phone with Android with the Firefox App and my Netbook which I use the Firefox on and sync them but it came up that I have a Master Password but I do not recall setting one up and I have record of all my passwords that I keep in a secure place and I had trouble with a hacker who had accessed several of my accounts and I am now concerned that they may have also access this and we did not catch this one as we did the other accounts and stopped them from getting access. But that is not my concern any longer as that has been remedied the problem is how do I get the password unlocked or changed since I have no idea what it is? I tried to turn it off but it will not allow me to do that either without knowing it. Please advise as to what can be done so I can use this App on my Droid. Thanks. Deborah

  • Remove the 'Master Password'

I've searched to see if this topic has been raised in the forums, but I am unable to locate a similar question - which I find amazing.
Once the Master Password has been set, the only option via the 'File Vault' area is to change the password. I am keen to find out if it is possible to 'Remove the Master Password' once it has been set. And by remove I mean to have it set to 'No Password'
File Vault is not active/set, but Master Password is.
    Can anyone help?

to remove the master password go to /Library/Keychains (that's the Library at the top level of the drive) and delete the files FileVaultMaster.cer and
FileVaultMaster.keychain. that's it. note that this change will not effect any existing filevault accounts. meaning that if you create a new master password after that it will not work on already existing filevault accounts.

  • How2 REMOVE the Master Password ?

Master password looks good but how to disable / remove it ?

    What do you mean?
The Master Password is the backup password for FileVault. Why would you want to remove it? You don't necessarily need to set one, but if you activate FileVault and forget your login password, the MasterPassword is the only way to access the data encrypted by FileVault.
Figure it makes more sense in a network environment where a user (employee) forgets his/her password and needs the admin (IT guy) to reset it.

  • I cannot remove my master password - the remove button is gray

I enabled the Firefox master password but FF kept asking for it every 20 seconds while I was using gmail, so I wanted to disable and remove the master password.
When I uncheck the master password box, a popup screen asks for the master password but entering it in the field, the "remove" button is and remains unclickable. So now how do I get rid of the master password?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

You can check the value of the security.password_lifetime pref on the <b>about:config</b> page.
You can set the MP to an empty string to disable it.
