Remove master password

Desperately trying to remove Master Password.
Does not allow me to remove in the Firefox>Preferences>Security space.
Am I in the wrong spot.
Was also unsuccessful in the Systems Preferences Security area

It is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db and signons.sqlite files that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the key3.db and signons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.
Otherwise you can rename the files to their previous names (signons.sqlite and key3.db
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • Remove master password on Filevault once it is set.

I need to completely remove/disable/turn off the master password for file vault on Leopard 10.5.1 . I see there is the option to change the master password but I don't see how to remove it completely. File vault is turned off for all user profiles.
I saw another post that says
The "master password" is associated with the "FileVaultMaster.keychain" and "FileVaultMaster.cer" in the computer's main "/Library/Keychains" folder. If these files are removed, the system will think that a "master password" has not been set.
Is it safe to really just remove these files to disable the master password? Thanks in advance!

I'm not a FileVault expert, but my understanding is that both user password and master password let you unlock a FileVault image. Deleting those files may equals throwing the key away : only th user password can then ulock the image since there is not certificate associated with the master password.
Well, I may be completely wrong here, but it may help

  • I HAD A MASTER PASSWORD ON AND TOOK IT OFF - RECOVERED THE SYSTEM AND IT IS BACK BUT WILL NOT BE REMOVED - DOES NOT RESPOND

BECAUSE THE MASTER PASSWORD IS ON, NONE OF MY PASSWORDS ARE SAVING AND I CANNOT REMOVE THE MASTER PASSWORD EVEN THOUGH I KNOW WHAT IT WAS WHEN IT WAS ACTIVE. IT WILL NOT RESPOND TO REMOVE MASTER PASSWORD EVEN AFTER I ENTER THE PASSWORD ON FILE. I WOULD LIKE TO REMOVE IT SO THAT MY MAIL AND OTHER THINGS STORE MY PASSWORDS AND OPEN MORE EASILY.. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO MAKE THE MASTER PASSWORD GO AWAY - IT WASN'T SAVING MY PASSWORDS AT ANY POINT SO THERE IS NO POINT IN HAVING IT.

You lose the stored passwords if you reset the Master Password because you have forgotten it.
You normally remove the master password by changing the current MP to an empty string.
Can you View the passwords in the Password Manager?

  • I cannot remove my master password - the remove button is gray

I enabled the Firefox master password but FF kept asking for it every 20 seconds while I was using gmail, so I wanted to disable and remove the master password.
When I uncheck the master password box, a popup screen asks for the master password but entering it in the field, the "remove" button is and remains unclickable. So now how do I get rid of the master password?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

You can check the value of the security.password_lifetime pref on the <b>about:config</b> page.
You can set the MP to an empty string to disable it.

  • How2 REMOVE the Master Password ?

Master password looks good but how to disable / remove it ?

    What do you mean?
The Master Password is the backup password for FileVault. Why would you want to remove it? You don't necessarily need to set one, but if you activate FileVault and forget your login password, the MasterPassword is the only way to access the data encrypted by FileVault.
Figure it makes more sense in a network environment where a user (employee) forgets his/her password and needs the admin (IT guy) to reset it.

  • Remove the 'Master Password'

I've searched to see if this topic has been raised in the forums, but I am unable to locate a similar question - which I find amazing.
Once the Master Password has been set, the only option via the 'File Vault' area is to change the password. I am keen to find out if it is possible to 'Remove the Master Password' once it has been set. And by remove I mean to have it set to 'No Password'
File Vault is not active/set, but Master Password is.
    Can anyone help?

to remove the master password go to /Library/Keychains (that's the Library at the top level of the drive) and delete the files FileVaultMaster.cer and
FileVaultMaster.keychain. that's it. note that this change will not effect any existing filevault accounts. meaning that if you create a new master password after that it will not work on already existing filevault accounts.

  • I am cursed with a master password I submitted a few days ago and it now seems impossible to get rid of it ... when I uncheck the box the approriate pop up comes up but the 'remove' is is not functioning ... help ... I hate this feature and want it gone !

A few days ago I was stupid and tried the Master Password option. Now it will not allow me to remove it! I follow the process but when I submit the master password for removal the 'remove' button is dead. Only the 'cancel' option is active.

  • Am deleting the master password but the "Remove" button is disabled.

Am deleting the master password in firefox preferences/security but the "Remove" option is disabled. Why? and how do I enable it? Thank you!

You can set the master password to an empty string to disable/remove a currently set master password.

  • Why can't I reset the master password with the option of removing all username:passwords by unchecking "Use Master Password"?

Why can't I reset the master password with the option of removing all username:passwords by unchecking "Use Master Password"? Currently, there seems to only be the option to issue a "chrome:" command in URL which DOES reset the master password. However, it was something that I had to google. The intuitive option would be to uncheck the "Use Master Password" checkbox, receive a verification dialogue, and blammo, password reset. Please make this a feature, thank you.

You can remove all password in the Show Passwords dialog.
That is where you manage the passwords.
The master password is only for protecting the passwords with an extra level of encryption and has nothing to do with erasing passwords apart from resetting the MP in case you have forgotten the MP and can't open "Show passwords".
    </blockquote>
Sorry, for being unclear. Essentially this is a feature request for an option under Firefox options (why not?) to reset my Master Password not knowing the Master Password. For Security reasons I understand why all the saved passwords have to be wiped, but wiping the Master Password (having forgotten it) should be an option without having to issue an arcane command that one has to google to figure out.

  • I have removed the master password, but Firefox still wil not remember passwords when I log in to other websites.

    Please read question above

Whether or not you have a master password has no effect over whether or not Firefox will offer to save login information.
    * [[Usernames and passwords are not saved]]
Some sites will prevent Firefox from saving login information using the ''autocomplete="off"'' attribute. You can ignore this as follows:
    # Type ''about:config'' into the address bar and press Enter.
    # To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
    # In the search box, paste ''signon.overrideAutocomplete''
    # In the search results, double-click ''signon.overrideAutocomplete'' to set its value to '''true'''.
Firefox will still not autofill login information for such sites. You have to either double-click the user name field, or type the first letter of the user name.
Also check that you didn't tell Firefox to never remember login information on specific sites.

  • Please help me get my laptop back someone has cracked the master password and is running multiple operating systems which I have no access to

Okay so I am not a computer expert by any means and have no clue how to fix my system. My father worked for intel for over 20 years as an engineer I asked him to restore my laptop to its original factory state and instead he cracked the master password
installed multiple operating systems and made himself the administrator or domain controller. Many features and options I do not have access to so reading the trouble shooting and going through the steps always leads me to a dead end. The laptop is TOSHIBA
SATELLITE L875D-S7332 a6 VISION AMD WINDOWS 8. As far as I can see my profile is actual running a version of windows 7. I do see reference to a windows 8RT windows 2003 windows vista wow64 and 32 I don't know what all that means I would just like to know how
wipe everything and get back to the factory condition I bought it in. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Do you have Win 7 installation disk? If yes, then go ahead and format the laptop if you don't need any data. If you need the data it it, then copy the same to USB disk and format it. Removing OS and deleting these things will anyhow keep some remains on
HDD. TO get the speed and performance back, you might need a fresh installation.

  • I use master password & if I change passwords on a site, it doesn't ask to "change" Also doesn't ask to "remember" with new usernames/passwords. Does anyone know how to fix this or add usernames & passwords to saved password page on Firefox.

Firefox (I think version 5, maybe 4) does not ask to "remember" passwords anymore nor does it ask to "change" a password when I've done that. It didn't ask when I changed my Facebook password & I have to log in each time so I removed my username & password for FB on Firefox's "saved password" page. When I've don't that before, it asks to "remember" but doesn't anymore. I use a master password.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving the name and password.
You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.

  • How can I recover my master password, set up by mistake, without losing all my existing login / password data?

When touring the latest version of Firefox I created a master password and unfortunately never wrote it down. Now I must get my Church's taxes and W-2's done and I'm unable to login to my state and IRS/SSA accounts as I don't have my latest logins and passwords because they were all stored in my older version of Firefox. Everything I've read, so far, states that resetting the master password will result in the loss of all my login and password data. I cannot have this happen! There has to be some way I can either recover my login and password file data or the password I created for my master password? I need help with this ASAP as time is running out.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately it is not the solution I am hoping for. Both of the links you posted clearly state that resetting or removing my master password will result in the loss of all my existing login and password data. I wouldn't have a problem with that if I could save or print out my current, but hidden by the password manager until I enter my master password, login and password data which I could eventually reproduce within password manager. Unfortunately this is the only place where I have all that data recorded and we are talking about many many lines of login data!
