Remove microphone noise caused by clothing rustle on microphone

Hi,
I am well aware that it is best practice to have good audio with no noise in the first place, however, I have a video that cannot be retaken and the sound is very clear but there is some noise from the microphone and clothing. I really need to just do the best job I can with the video and audio that I have.
I have audition but the noise is intermittent and it is difficult. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Warm regards,
Diana

Glad it helped!  You will never remove all the rustle unless it is in an area where there is no wanted sound, but the technique I describe reduces its impact.  Ryclark's method is needed where the rustle is among wanted sound - my work is wildlife, and I have this problem a lot with birdsong, which is generally higher frequency than speech.
The key is not to be too heavy handed, or your result can all too easily sound very artificial, and in many ways worse that the impaired original.

Can Logic plug ins remove background noise from interview?
A friend with an important interview recorded in noisy conditions has asked me to help remove background noise - never done this technically.
Is there a Logic or third party plug in that would could remove background noise from a spoken word interview? Have tried EQ which improves the sound slightly but not a solution.
Anyone with specialised knowledge of this sound editing operation?
    cheers

There are several 3rd party denoisers, they mostly work by first 'learning' the noise footprint of the audio, for which it is best to record a few seconds of silence (with an open mic).
These will all do a decent to excellent (it all depends on the source material) job:

    Addit:
Is it that background noise (traffic, talking etc) drowns out the words? Then you'd probably have more luck with (radical) eq-ing and/or notch filtering to find the most dominant frequency range of the speaker in relation to the background noise.
As an interviewer myself I will point out that even with a small disctaphone you need to have some awareness of how the microphone picks up things. As soon as you nead to lean towards whoever you're talking to, just to make sure you're audible, the dictaphone on the table is probably recording mainly ambient noise, the interview being part of that. This is especially a problem when interviewing in a busy public space.

  • Removing background noise on only one of two tracks

Hello and thank you in advanced for your help. I am new to STP but well versed in FCP. I've recently discovered the wonderful feature of removing background noise in my video clips.
I'm having trouble with one instance though: I have footage shot with a microphone into only one channel of the camera. In FCP, I highlight that channel of audio and "send to" STP just as I have other clips. This time, however, no matter what I seem to try, both left and right audio channels show up in STP and I can't seem to separate them in order to remove the hiss from only one channel.
If I proceed as normal and select a portion of the hiss to set as "noise print" I can only select both tracks, not only the track I want. Probably a matter of a simple button, but I don't know STP well enough and the manual was no help. Anyway, continuing with the process to "reduce noise" and adjusting the parameters I hear almost no difference when turning the filter on and off.
I'm not sure if I've explained my scenario the best, but I'd appreciate some assistance.
    Thank you!
    Eric P

    Eric,
Make sure the stereo file is open in the Editor as an Audio file. Click inside the editor window area and move your mouse pointer up to the top of the left channel's window border. If done correctly a tiny "L" will appear. This lets you know you can select the left channel, or portions of it.
Do the same for the right channel. However instead of moving the mouse pointer to the top area of the window, move it to the bottom of the Right channel's pane. Look for the tiny 'R."
Proceed as normal: Set a noise print, adjust parameters, and process. You'll find only the selected channel will be processed.

  • Removing Fan Noise

I shot a wedding in August and it was terribly hot in the church. They had setup many many fans to cool off the audience, which was nice but the audio for the ceremony has the underlying fan noise in it. The groom was mic'd and the only other source of sound I have is from the shotgun mic on the camera, eliminating the fan noise at the time of recording seemed impossible with the equipment that I had.
I am able to do the reduce noise and you can barely hear the fan noise but it makes the audio sound like it is in a tin can, is there anything I can do to not make it sound so tinny? I have tried to remove the noise to the point where the tinny sound starts but you can still hear the noise very loudly, almost making the noise removal pointless.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Jeff

If the noise is a very low hum (low as in frequency, not amplitude), try using the low cut filter under process . . . eq and filters.

  • Can anyone tell me how to remove 'moire-noise' in LR4

    Hey
I might use a photo from an old brochure from 1971. I've used my scanner in 800 pix - so it's a 'heavy' pic, but I have a lot of 'moire-noise' in it. Can I remove this noise in LR4? - and if - how to do it?
This image is only 1600 pix - the original is 4000x5408 pix.
    BRLars, Denmark

In LR4, use the Brush tool, set the Moire slider to the right of 0. Or is it to the left of 0? (I haven't actually used this yet). Well, you can experiment, as the editing is non-destructive.

    Hello abyjohn,
I would be concerned too if the speaker on my iPhone was not working, and if I was getting a message about the accessory not being optimized.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this.

With my Yoga 10 HD+ (model B8080) I have very bad sound than I recording (and play) sport-disco competition (with modern loud music) than I seating at scene (not under big dynamic loudspeaker).
    B8080 can't record this music...
I listen only trash (crunch and sound holes).
How can I to OFF "microphone noise reduction"?
    to test recording without reduction.
    Thans for help!

Yes, you are right - you do already have most of the parts to the answer of your question.
For clarity here's the whole procedure:
    1. Make sure you have cloned your drive properly, using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!*, and had set the clone to be bootable in the relevant utlity's preferences.
    2. With the external drive still connected via FireWire, restart the PowerBook.
    3. Upon hearing the startup chime, press and hold down the 'option'/alt key until you see the Startup Manager.
    4. Select the icon of the drive you want to boot up from.
    5. Click the 'right arrow' icon to boot up from the drive you have chosen.
*SD! has an option to automatically reboot from the external drive after the cloning process.

  • Removing wind noise

Is it feasible to remove wind noise in FCE? If not how?

You could try SoundSoap (or SoundtrackPro 'Learn Noise' feature, but that only comes with Final Cut Studio). The randomness of wind noise is really difficult to filter and really needs to be taken care of with a windscreen on the mic at recording time.

Can I remove background noise from imovie '09 more than one clip at a time?

Ya you got it rightly I read a guide here http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_audio_filtertutoria.html
so I am aware of basic things at least.Like you gave an example of Main Parameter in your previous reply similarly I feel if some where I can get these parameters in Filter what do they do that may help.

  • Best filter advice for minimizing clothing rustle in an interview situation

I had a fidgety interview subject who was wearing a pacemaker that interfered with the lav mike that we had attached to him. We had to resort to a shotgun mike which provided more shielding. He was sitting in a velour chair and had a tendency to move around quite a bit...with that kind of rustling sound from clothing. Unfortunately we could not switch out his chair.
Any advice on which audio filters in Soundtrack Pro may be the most useful? I could take a look at the frequency spectrum analyser, but I think that is probably only good for removing loud flashes of sound like something hitting the mike boom.
I'm sure others have tried to filter out similar sounds in an interview situation and I thought of asking first before I try my experimentation. Of all the filters one can use, which should I give priority to first?
    Many thanks,
    John

If the rustling noises are a LOT softer than the voice, try the FCP or Apple "expander" used as a noise gate. The FCP documentation discusses it. Basically, you pick a threshhold below which you kill the sound. You'll have to experiment a bit to make sure that you subject speaks or you have other wanted audio that it is not cut off. You also need to be careful that the spots between the subject talking are not unnaturally quiet. I've added an "ambient noise" track to some stuff I've done, or even soft white noise so that it doesn't go dead silent between speeches.

  • Removing background noise

    Hi All
I am new to imovie and took video on my iphone 4s and converted in imovie added music and i thought great went to put on you tube and facebook and couldn't because of the music and copyright issues
i can take the music off of the video but then i get wind noise (the video is me on my trike) how do i get rid of wind noise in imovie 11
    thanks in advance
    eon

Trouble is, in my experience, the person who yells (or the dog that barks or the car horn that honks) usually does it right in the middle of somebody's dialogue, and there's no way to untangle the noise from the words. You end up losing the word or a syllable, and then have to resort to a voiceover, which usually doesn't match well for one reason or another, often because the ambiance or surrounding sound is different. If possible, you have to get the speaker in the same place he originally recorded in, to repeat the word, or better, the whole sentence for the microphone.
But yes, an isolated noise is easily removed with the pen tool in an enlarged view of the audio track. In fact I can mute overly loud P and S sound in speech just by drawing down the audio line at exactly the spike in the audio waveform.

  • DKA790GX Platinum + Microphone noise {fixed - rework}

    Hi guys,
I had troubles with the above combination, high pitch noise in the Microphone input when Mic is connected.
So I went with my board to MSI EU to test it there, no noise.
I took it home, noise again.
Changed the powersupply to Enermax 365 as MSI used an OCZ 850, no noise.....
    Whoooot?
So I contacted OCZ (PC Power & Cooling = OCZ) and after a few emails they decided to RMA the powersupply.
After a few weeks I got a brand new one, connected it, no noise YEAH!
Within 2 weeks the trouble started again, noise, replaced the powersupply to Enermax 365, noise gone.
Ok, now I'm getting nuts! So I called MSI EU and told them I was on my way with my Silencer 750.
MSI had a board prepared when I got there, different memory, different 90nm CPU...and Windows XP (I changed to Vista as the first test of my board at MSI was done with Vista)....no noise!
I looked closed, and they forgot to connect speakers
So I hooked up a couple of noisy boxes and Whooot!! noise on the mic again.
MSI was as surprised as I was and they thought OCZ had simply returned my PSU, so they took out another Silencer 750....bingo Also noise!
So we tested mine and their PSU on several other boards, no noise.
The noise is about 8KHz and is only there when a mic is connected (and mic is un-muted so you can hear it via the speakers).
For some reason this combination does this, there are no other problems, no crashes nothing.
MSI EU is forwarding this problem to MSI Taiwan so they can reproduce the problem.
It only happens with this combination, so in case you have it, best replace the powersupply to some other type and it's fixed.
We do not know what the reason is, but it happens, BIOS doesn't fix it as far as we can see.

The powersupply MSI had will be send to Taiwan together with the tested board.
I believe the problem is a combination of factors.
Anyway, MSI probably has to alter the motherboard so it doesn't happen, as other boards don't have the problem.
Mike we tested my board and another board MSI EU had, both doing the same, with my PSU and MSI's Silencer 750...same thing happened.
Both boards where tested with different PSU's non PCPC and the problem wasn't there.
I do believe the problem is the board not the powersupply, as the board should filter spikes, but doesn't.
And the setup on the board was different:
    Mine <-> MSI
    4200+ 90nm - 5000+ 90nm
    Kingston DDR667 2GB - Something with heatspreaders
Samsung 160GB Sata - WD something Sata
Stock cooler - Some fancy cooling, not fastened but cools.
Also tested, onboard video and Ati 3870, 4850, nVidia 2xx
    And other soundcards, also noise.
And different OS, Vista and XP, random order.
Too much is different to believe it's a small problem.
Mike we are sure that the combination causes this, very sure.
It's my believe the board starts oscillating on the buses due to the resistance of the powersupply.
Why exactly, don't know, that's for MSI and OCZ to find out, but it does.

  • Suggestions for removing video noise from converted Hi8 footage

I am about to start capturing Hi8 material into FCP 6 through a Sony D8 camcorder that does the analog to digital conversion. Even after cleaning the tape heads, I notice a very few lines of noise at the very bottom of the frames - like a dirty head. From the camcorder side everything looks normal - no noise. From the FCP side in VTR mode you can see the noise. I am not sure if this is an artifact from the analog to digital transfer or if the tape head is still dirty.
Question: assuming I cannot eliminate the noise on transfer/input, is there an easy way to apply a universal filter or horizontal "clip" function to imported video to remove the bottom few lines of video? I guess I could always overlay a black canvas covering only a few lines on the bottom, but maybe there is a more elegant solution?
Thanks in advance for any counsel!

What you are seeing are timing errors that are an artifact of analog recording and generally are outside the viewable area of a CRT TV (i.e. in the overscan zone). If you are setting these up for digital presentation - web or computer play only, these items may be seen.
You have a couple of options to deal with the tearing ..
    • Recapture the material using a Hi8 deck and a separate analog/DV converter with a full frame Time Base Corrector between the tape machine and the analog/DV converter. This will clean up the timing errors but is an expensive proposition.
    • Crop the image. This will leave a very slight letterbox effect and may not be noticeable unless you mix the material with non-cropped material.
    • Slightly enlarge the material so that the tearing falls outside of the 720x480 area. Expanding images much beyond 110% softens/pixelates the images noticeably and my not be acceptable.
    • Live with it.
    Good luck.

  • Removing Exception Handling Causes Compiler Error

I am very new to Java. I have a background in other programming languages including Ruby. I am in need of a convenient means to parse XML code. I picked up the code shown at the end of this message on the Internet. In its original form, it works perfectly. I experimented by trying to comment out the try block as you can see. I was surprised to find that in that form it wouldn't compile. In essence, I thought what I was doing was simply removing exception handling. I figured that since the code worked and there were no exceptions being thrown, it would work just fine for experimentation purposes. (I understand that I would not want to do this in production mode.) Can someone please explain to me why removing the exception handling causes the program to fail to compile?
    Thanks for any input.
