Remove Preview Files & Consolidation

At one point in a project, I cleared all renders and deleted some unused sequences. Now when I open that project I am asked where the rendered preview files are. I click 'Skip previews' and move on. Is there a way to have CS3 stop asking for the old previews?
Also, how do the 'Remove unused' and 'Consolidate' (I kknow that's an Avid term but I forgot the PP designation) functions work? Do they physically remove files from drives or just the project?

I tried 'Offline' but it produces an error message stating 'not a valid file'.

I was creatin a large project in Garageband and decided to split it into smaller parts. I forgot that I had set Garageband to create an iLife Preview for the files when I save them, and sudddenly, I've lost 20GB of space on my drive because I have created all these extra preview files with every same.
Is there a way to remove the preview files without having to delete the individual tracks?

it's really doubtful that the Previews would acount for gigabytes of space. many megs, but not 1+ gigs (unless the recording was _very_ long)
when you paste in a region and Save As, you're essentially copying the entire recording associated with that region, even if you're displaying only some of it. some background:

  • "Adobe Adobe Media Encoder Preview Files" folder full ?

    Hello,
I'm on latest version of both Premiere and Media Encoder, I'm working on PC/7 (64bits)/i7/Cuda,
What is "Adobe Adobe Media Encoder Preview Files" folder ?
C:\Users\XXXXX\Documents\Adobe\Adobe Media Encoder\Adobe Adobe Media Encoder Preview Files\7.PRV
How to purge it NOT manually ? Why is it created ? How to deplace it or remove it ?
I've plenty of videos into my batch, and as soon as this folder is full, it's not exporting anymore. Even if all the old previewes are used and exported, they are not removed or automaticly deleted.
I've tried to move this folder of my D: through adobe media encoder preferences... impossible to find its reference somewhere.
If you have any idea, thanks a lot

  • Does the new firefox work when previewing files from Dreamweaver?

I use Dreamweaver CS3. I always preview my pages that I build in Firefox. After just downloading the newest firefox version (3.6.10), I could no longer preview files in Dreamweaver. When I go to preview the file, it just opens a firefox the application, not my webpage within firefox. Any ideas? I even edited my browser list within Firefox, removing Firefox as one of my browser options and replacing it again.

Dreamweaver CS3 doesn't work correctly in any Firefox 3.6 version.
There is a fix for Dreamweaver, so it works in Firefox 3.6+ versions:
    http://solutions.marketingmedley.com/
There is a $5.00 fee for that Dreamweaver fix. That website and the fix are not associated with Mozilla in any manner. Support for that fix is provided by that that website via email.

  • Preview  files

Hi. A couple of things with previews.
Is it normal to have a 1 folder with 1 file in it for every preview in the preview directory ? If you delete images does the preview file and folder get removed also. I seem to have more preview folders than images. Some of the preview folders are empty.
Also I notice that when I go to folders in Library and select all pictures then scroll down the list the thumbnails seem to be blurred at first and the 3 little white dots appear as if Lightroom is re-rendering the images.
I thought that once it did them the first time it would not do them again unless the image changed.
As a new user moving from Elements 4 I am trying to get a grasp of how Lightroom is organized so any info much appreciated.
    OS is Windows with SP2.

"And, the previews are cached, but you'll still see the three dots for a moment as you scroll, but if they're cached they should all go away a whole screen at a time. "
This constant rendering of thumbnails and previews is the strangest thing about LR. I have a pretty fast computer running XP Pro SP2, 3ghz dual core with 4GB fast RAM, great video card, Matrox P650 128mb and fast SATA 10,000rpm hard drives, optimized in every way recommended by Adobe and it will not stop rendering thumbnails or previews. I render standard size previews (1680) upon import and render 1:1 previews after import.
I only have about 11k images in my library, mixed JPG and Canon RAW, and I simply cannot browse my images with anything like reasonable speed. LR is the slowest image viewer I have ever tried. Free stuff like Picasa is way faster and so is cheap stuff like ACDC. I mean way, way faster.
If I show LR a big group of pictures, say 2-3,000 images, it slowly renders the thumbnails as I scroll down screen by screen. The white dots appear for a whole screen, then disappear one by one, not a whole screen at a time. Finally, after the white dots disappear the thumbnail is sharp. If I scroll down say 5 screens of images, then reverse direction, the thumbnails re-render as I go back up the list of files! The 3 white dots reappear even though those thumbnails just rendered 15 seconds before! What in the world is going on? If I try to browse images in Fit or Fill or 1:1 size, the performance is even slower.
Since my computer flies through images, thumbnail and preview, with every other photo program I have tried, I have to think that LR is the problem.

  • Preview files folder

a folder of media encoder preview files is created in my documents- adobe- media encoder
this folder is getting bigger, I think every time I'm using media encoder to export my projects
at the moent it's 30 gigs after less than a month using CC
I need to know if I can delete this files? and I need to redirect them to my D drive or even better not create preview files

    Thank you for your answer.
Trouble is I know how to clean the Cache but it was the Preview Files that were the problem.
Additionally, I have some Cache Files in the location below which are taking up 23GB
    User>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Common>Media Cache Files
There is also a folder here called Media Cache.
I am confused becuase I have set my Media Cache Files and Media Cache in Premiere Pro, After Effects, Media Encoder to all be the same and none of them point to this location? How do I clean this folder? Is it only present from a previous versions of the applications and simply not been removed when the programs were uninstalled? A lotof the files here seem to relate to audio files and .pek files?
Really grateful for your help on this one.

  • Is it safe to delete preview files/folders?

I noticed I have 30gb or more of folders in a folder called preview files.  These seem to be the product of rendering and look like a waste of space - what happens if i delete the whole lot for projects i no longer work on?  would removing these and the CFA and PEAK files damage the ability to work on the file at a later stage?  I could use the extra space!
    j

First of all, there is a difference between preview files and Media Cache files.
Preview files are those, which are created when you render the timeline. By default they are .mpeg and .xmp. If you delete them via Sequence -> Delete Render Files, .mpeg files, which represent the current state of your timeline, will be deleted, whereas the rest .mpeg files, which represent older state of your timeline, and all .xmp ones remain.
If you delete them manually, i.e. without going to Sequence -> Delete Render Files, you will be asked about some missing media on that project re-launch.
Media Cache files, some of which are .pek and .cfa, are created when you import assets into a project. You can check the Media Cache files location via Preferences -> Media.
Deleting all files from both Media Cache and Media Cache Files folders is safe: PrPro will rebuild Media Cache Database from scratch on restart. Moreover, deleting all files from both Media Cache and Media Cache Files manually sometimes helps fixing Dynamic Link or Importer Generic Error issues.

  • Is it safe to delete all PREVIEW files in the FINDER's "All my files"?

I have > 7,000 files showing in the PREVIEW section of the Finder's ALL MY FILES.  I want to clean up unnecessary and duplicate files - most are photos. I just want to make sure that if I delete these preview files it will not remove the original  file.

ALL MY FILES is exactly what the name implies — it is a list of all of your files. They are not duplicates (unless you see more than one copy of the same file in the All My Files list). If you delete something from that list, you are deleting the one and only instance of that file.

  • Prev "previewed" files in 10.6 dont scale via "show icon preview" function

    1. use DropIcon 3.0.2 under a lower version of OSX than 10.6
    2. import your "preview built" files into 10.6 (notice also that files that have a preview built into them are larger in file size than the same file which doesnt have it)
    3. scale a folder full of images to for example - 180 px squared
    4. notice that 10.6 cant build a new preview based on the new size
how to "show icon preview" files which have been previously "preview built" by apps like DropIcon 3.0.2 ?
    This would be very useful....
    TIA

You may not think of icons as 512x512, but Apple now does. The transition started in Leopard, and is now complete--pretty much all of Apple's icons will now go to 512pixels in the various and sundry places they are displayed, from window views for Icon, CoverFlow, and the preview pane of Column view, to the GetInfo preview, to Spotlight results displayed in icon view.
As to your own custom thumbnails: if, as mentioned previously, you used Photoshop with the option to save a custom thumbnail, or you used a dedicated program to save a custom thumbnail for an image file, then those custom thumbnails were added to the image file as a resource fork. WAY back such custom thumbnails were 32x32 pixels. In the more recent past they were 128x128. Indeed, that is still the size used by Photoshop when it adds a custom thumb.
If the Finder is displaying any view that shows a preview of the file it will either display the custom thumb that is part of the file, if one is present, or draw its own preview if no custom thumb is embedded in the file. And if it uses the custom thumbs they will NOT scale upwards in any pretty way, beyond whatever their original size was--they'll just get pixalated. The advantage, if you don't need to be able to scale up to 512, is that the display of a folder full of images with custom thumbs is instantaneous, while a folder full of images without custom thumbs may take a noticeable amount of time for all of the previews to be drawn (you can see them appearing as you scroll the folder). The disadvantage to custom thumbs, as you have discovered, is that they don't scale well. If you want to be able to scale the preview thumbnails in various Finder views, you need to remove the custom thumbnails you have added, either via the save option in Photoshop, or with your third party program. You can't tell Finder to ignore them: if they are present Finder assumes you want it to use them, rather than its own preview function.

  • Audio rendering problem, can't export- hundreds of hours, audio preview files hundreds of gigs

    Hi,
I'm working on a feature doc and trying to render and export about 4 hours of material. Please advise.
Premiere Pro CC 8.2.0 (65) Build
Mac Pro 3.2 GHz Quad Core Intel
    16GB 1066 MHz DDr3
    OSX 10.8.5
The sequence is mixed media, this is a doc with numerous cameras and formats. Most of the footage is in multicam clips. I am able to play back OK and the video rendered in about 4 hours. Fine. But when I try and export audio, the process of generating preview files for export is unbelievably slow. I let it render for 4 hours and it got to 0.5% and created 350 gigs of preview files, larger than the picture files!!! There must be a problem with my settings or the software because this cannot be right. This is my first premiere project (after 10 years of FCP) and would greatly appreciate any advice.
    I have tried:
    cleaning the media cache
starting a new project with just the export sequence
restarting PPCC and the computer of course
rendering and exporting smaller sections of the timeline (ten minute chunks)
making a new sequence with multitrack audio instead of stereo playback. This allowed me to render the audio in about 1 hour- great! But when I tried to export (using an adobe preset for vimeo) it crashed. When I re-opened the project it is now back to saying it will take about 300 hours to render the same audio.
I've tried flattening the multicam, but this removes a large number of the audio files completely from the sequence. The selections I made in the multicam tracks in the sequence are not reflected in what is left of the flattened audio.

<<I'm speculating, but I doubt Apple would be able to provide Keynote so cheaply, or at all, if it were not for its successes in iPhones, iPods, and other major undertakings that require the full-time attention of its brightest and most dedicated people. >>
Good point. However, coupled with the fact that the Macintosh platform is more widely used for production of both audio and video in the entertainment industry than the "other" system, this cries-out the fact that audio is an important element of +some aspect+ of Apple's product focus.
Thus, it remains "a puzzlement" (to quote Oscar Hammerstein) that Apple has not paid more heed to the audio facilities and capabilities in Keynote - despite the long-time, repeated pleadings of many of us in this (and the Keynote Feedback) Forum.
Many of the problems that we are encountering and about which we are complaining have been known since the very first issue of Keynote. None has been addressed in subsequent releases. In fact, with respect to the problems of exporting Keynote presentations to other formats, some features have grown more problematic and less reliable - admittedly, not always as a function of Keynote (i.e. the problems with QuickTime).
As has been stated previously in this and other threads in this Forum, raging against Apple is futile and frustration is self-defeating. All we can do is continue to assist each other with "tips and tricks" in this Forum and to make our concerns known to Apple via the Keynote Feedback Forum.
    Good luck to all.

  • Preview Files Suddenly Go Missing, Render Entire Work Area Crashes Premiere, Audio Drops Out

I opened a Premiere Pro project I was working on earlier today and it said it couldn't find the preview files, searching my system found that the files didn't exist.
Rendering my entire work area brings up the "render window" but nothing happens, if I press cancel Premiere freezes.
Started getting a strange situation error ( 26 ::139 ) in After Effects at the same time that Premiere lost the preview files and the crashes started happening. It disallows me from editing any dynamically linked projects. In Premiere the DL's just show up as "Media Pending" clips indefinitely. Importing the compositions in AE into a new project didn't fix the issue either.
The three problems above started happening all at the same time, was working through a color grade using Red Giant software when it started happening.
Also audio drops out on playback randomly in Premiere Pro, tried various audio drivers and hardware, none entirely eliminate this problem. Sometimes the audio will cut out and "burst in" distorted very loudly, which is disturbing, even when my work area is rendered. This problem has been around since I started using PP CC.
I can provide more info soon or if people want more info pls let me know, I'm very tired and I need to get this issue resolved for tomorrow, in the mean time hopefully someone can point out a general fix for these errors or knows a few workarounds. Tried reinstalling PP and AE, no luck.
Computer is a Windows 7, 64-bit. i7 950, 12gb RAM, GeForce GTX 650, programs installed on a separate internal HDD, media files on another internal HDD. But these same issues (minus the audio dropouts) was also cropping up on a core 2 duo 13'' macbook pro.
    Regards,
    Zach

Hi Arjun, thank you for your help.
Though that didn't work either. At least the timeline will playback but as soon as I try to render my work region or export any video Premiere freezes.
I removed all dynamic linked files as well, that didn't seem to change anything.
Something I noticed -- the render bar on the timeline that is usually yellow for edited clips that have no FX on them is all red, nothing is yellow (or green). This is a 4 minute long edit on a music video, nothing extraordinary.
I tried creating a new project and dragging a few clips in and editing them, everything went normally and I could render and export the clips. Just any rendering done on any version of this music video edit I'm working on crashes the program.
Also recently had a problem where I opened the music video project and the song that I imported (.mp3) all of a sudden has no waveform or sound coming from it. Dragging it back into the project doesn't fix it either. Workaround was using a .wav copy of the song.

  • Previewing files takes a long time when trying to attach them

Whenever i try to preview files while trying to attach them in mail..once the file is selected it takes a long time to preview and hence be attached. First it was a problem with finder taking ages to preview...i sorted this out..but not the mail thing. Even after running disk utility, repairing permissions, cache cleaning and removing the com.apple.mail.plist file ..It didn't work. I started seeing the same problem in adium when I was trying to select a picture from a folder to change my display pic. Fortunately it hasn't happened in word or excel.

  • Files Consolidation in Premiere

One of my favourite things about After Effects, there are many, but one of them is that it is so easy to remove duplicate movs, artwork, footage etc. by using the file consolidation command.
Often in Premiere I tend to reimport a folder of files, and as Premiere does not have an import function that asks if you want to replace the same file with the same file (if you know what I mean) I end up with lots of SHOT003.mov etc.
Is the After Effects consolidate files function hidden somewhere deep in Premiere Pro?
If not, when can we get it?
    Thanks

I think due diligence of the editor is the best solution on this one.

  • In Mountain Lion, how do I find the location of an open Preview File?  The file "properties" tab is no longer available.

I typically have several open Preview files at any one time and often forget where, sometimes if, I saved them.  In Mountain Lion, how do I find the location of an open Preview File?  Tried holding option + command in spotlight but I don't see a path name appear anywhere.

Yes, cmd-option on a file you choose in Spotlight and the path will appear at the bottom of the Preview window.
EDIT: Also, if it is bookmarked the path is in Bookmarks.
