Remove Public Folders
I have two mailbox sever in our environment, a virtual EX2010 and physical EX2010. We had migrated from EX2003 to Virtual EX2010 including
Public folders. All the clients are using Outlook 2010 so we don’t need the public folders. All the mailbox have been moved to physical EX2010.
When I try to delete the system and default public folders, I get below error msg. I want to delete all the public and system folders and uninstall
the exchange server roll from the Virtual EX2010. How do I do that?
Action 'Remove' could not be performed on object 'EX:/o=XYZ Organization/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)'.

Hi,
I have read the article and i am removing the last public
folder database from a Mailbox server. According to the article it says “you must first move the data within the public folder database to a public folder
database on another server and then remove the public folder database.”
I don't won’t to the public folder on a mailbox server so can i skip
this step?
I have already removed the data from the folders but when i try to remove the data from
the folder i get below error msg.
error: Cannot delete the object '\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY\EX:/o=XYZ Organization/ou=Exchange Administrative Group
(FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)'. Please make sure that you specified the correct identity and that you have the correct permissions to delete it.
I have never done this before that’s why need help.
Thank you
for your patience while i hustle to get this work done
Much appreciated

Removing Public Folders after migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013
Recently we migrated from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. We did not migrate Public Folders and are retiring them from Exchange altogether. I shut Exchange 2007 off for a couple of weeks to ensure 2013 functions properly and it does so we're
ready to decommission Exchange 2007. I was able to remove all the mailbox databases without a glitch. Using the EMC I click to remove the Public Folder database from Exchange 2007 and get the following message:
Error: The public folder database "server\storage group - Public Folders\ Public Folder Database" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database.
Any help appreciated.Hi Terry,
If you run the following command does it come back with any public folders?
Get-PublicFolderStatistics -Server "SERVERNAME" | fl
If nothing comes back you can follow this guide to manually remove the public folder database (at your own risk) http://haythamalex.wordpress.com/2011/11/24/how-to-force-exchange-server-public-folder-removal/
Cheers,
Jack
I get alot of output from that command.

Removing Public Folders from Exchange 2007
Hello
I am part way through migrating from Exch 2007 to 2010.
All my mailboxes are over and the new server is working as I want it to. The problem has come when trying to un-install the 2007 server. I get the following error:
Summary: 3 item(s). 2 succeeded, 1 failed.
Elapsed time: 00:00:20

Error:
Uninstall cannot continue. Database 'Public Folder Database': The public folder database "JUPITER\Second Storage Group\Public Folder Database" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to
another public folder database. For detailed instructions about how to remove a public folder database, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=81409.

I've gone round google at least 3 times now reading posts about moving the mailboxes and force-able removing them but nothing works and the folders remain. Below is what I get when trying to follow the standard process of moving them.

I'm not the most experienced exchange admin so it could be something simple ive over looked.
Thanks in advance. If you can confirm the PF's have been replicated properly and rehomed to the Exchange 2010 Server then you can just manually remove the Ex2007 PF store, I have had to do this a few times so I could just get the Ex2007 uninstall to proceed.
In ADSIEdit, go to Configuration, Configuration, Services, Microsoft Exchange, FirstOrganization, Administrative Groups, Exchange Administrative Group, Servers, Servername, Information Store, First Storage Group. Then on the right hand pane, highlight
the Public Folder Store and Delete it.MVP Exchange Server -
Removing public folders project
Under 2007, I used to simply export/import ConfRoom calendars into Room Mailboxes using Outlook 2007. I'm now at a site with Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010, and trying to move on up to O365. The method I've used in the past no longer works.
I've tried changing the view and copying, but I read somewhere that doesn't keep the meeting organizer properly and it errors on me anyway with something about 'too many items open'
I tried exporting from PF's and importing, but it doesn't import into the existing calendar. It puts the calendar into a sub folder start with IPM_Subtree.
What's the best way to move these Calendars please? MS has been trying to get rid of PF's for so long now, but we really need a method of getting rid of them without getting cut off at the knees.
ThanksHi mipbar,
As I know, we want to move calendars. In Exchange 2007, we used to simply export/import ConfRoom calendars into Room Mailboxes using Outlook 2007. However we are currently in
a site with Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 which will move to O365, but old method no longer work as normal. You tried changing the view and copying, but it report an error, could you please let me know
detailed steps you have done and the error messages when we export/import the calendar?
Also, you tried exporting from PF's and importing, but it doesn't import into the existing calendar. Yes, it will import to a sub folder of the public folder. When we import
the calendar, did you try to import using this option?
First click to view the
Calendar folder in Outlook;
Click File->Import/Export.., after several steps, before import, since we are currently on the Calendar folder, we can choose to “Import items into the current folder”
like below:
Please try to import the Calendar like above and if anything is unclear, feel free to let me know.

Removing Exchange 2003 Public Folders
I am in the process of removing public folders from the old 2003 environment after upgrading to Exchange 2010. The Exchange 2010 is set as a replica and everything seems to have transferred over. What are my steps from here? I have 5 Exchange
2003 boxes to remove. I have read a few guides and believe my last step is to use the script "MoveAllReplicas"? Is there anything special I have to do to remove the last 2003 PF database? Is there a "master copy" which
needs ported to 2010?
Thank you.Hi Ian,
As a last step, after you confirmed that all the PF have been replicated to the Exchange 2010, you can move all replicas from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. The "move all replicas" will actually remove the Exchange
2003 replicas.
Move the public folder replicas to another server:
To move all Exchange 2003 replicas to Exchange 2010, which will actually remove the Exchange 2003 replicas:
From the Exchange 2010 server:
.\MoveAllReplicas.ps1 -Server "Exchange 2003 Server" -NewServer "Exchange 2010 Server"
http://blogs.technet.com/b/agobbi/archive/2010/08/04/how-to-move-public-folder-from-exchange-2003-to-exchagne-2010.aspx
http://exchangeserverpro.com/migrate-public-folders-from-exchange-2003-to-exchange-server-2010/
When the public folder instances displays an empty list the operation has completed.
Associate mailbox databases with another public folder database
If any mailbox databases are associated with the public folder database that is to be removed, you must configure another public folder database as their default public folder database.
1. Identify all mailbox databases that use the public folder database that you want to remove as their default public folder database.
2. Use Exchange Management Console to select another public folder database as the default public folder database for the mailbox databases that you identified in Step 1.
3. Repeat Step 2 for all mailbox databases identified in Step 1.
Once moved you can, dismount the PF databases on Ex2003 and verify all are working from 2010.
Remove the PF database and delete the database files manually
1. Now you are ready to remove your Public folder database. To remove a public folder database click on your Public folder database and under Actions select "Remove":
2. You get a prompt to confirm your Action.
3. A warning appears, indicating that the database was removed and reminding you to manually remove the database file.
4. Browse to the folder specified in the Warning message and delete the .edb file from the folder.

Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 Public Folders
Hi Gurus, I’m in the process of moving public folders from Exch03 to Exch2010 and I have some clarifications before I proceed with this task. As I have understood the replication process between public folders working in a multi-master environment, I still
need some deep understanding. Okay, the task is to ensure that we don’t lose any PF when I remove the last Exch03 where there’s a lot of PF residing. From my understanding, these PFs found at Exch03 are only replicas from Exch2010. From testing I can verify
that the Outlook clients are looking at Exch2010. The way I tested this is by creating a test PF from Outlook and it did reflected on Exch2010 PF. Looking Exch03 for a couple of days, the test PF never reflected there so I'm just just assuming that there's
no replication happening between Exch2010 and Exch2010.
Please verify on this. Does it mean that Exch2010 is not replicating to Exch03?
If yes, if I remove the PFs from Exch2003 without moving the replicas first to Exch2010, like plainly removing them for decommission, will that delete/remove the PFs on Exch2010?
I have a feeling that it don’t because the PFs I’m creating/deleting at Exch03 are all replicas and I don't see any of the PFs that I deleted at Exch03 to also get deleted at Exch2010. More likely the PFs I'm creating at Exch2010 are not replication across
to Exch03 and therefore removing these PFs at Exch03 should not affect the PFs at Exch2010.
Please confirm on this before I proceed.
Note that I've already taken copy of these Exchange servers because these are all VMs.
Thanks....Hi,
When you add Exchange 2010 to the replica list on Exchange 2003 server, it will replicate the Exchange 2003 Public Folder hierarchy and content to Exchange 2010, not from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2003.
You can remove public folders on Exchange 2003 without affecting the public folders which have been replicated to Exchange 2010.
Before you decide to remove Exchange 2003 server, I recommend you put the Exchange 2003 server offline temporarily to check if Exchange 2010 works well.
Best regards,
Belinda

Moved Public Folders - 4 System Folders wont Remove
I have moved Public Folders from one Exchange 2007 Server to another Exchange 2007 Server using the ./movereplicas script. All Folders have replicated ok, but on the old server which I want to decomission I am unable to remove the public
folder DB because it says not all folders have replicated.
If I run Get-publicfolderstatistics on both servers I am left with 4 system folders on the old server. These seem to have replicated across to the new server ok - the item count is higher on the new server.
I have tried running the script again, but these 4 folders never get removed. The folders are OAB, Store Events which have an item count of 0 on both serversthese two are higher on the new Public Folder DB.
Hope someone can advise
Thanks
DaveHi,
If they're system folders you don't need, like those other than SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY, OFFLINE ADDRESS BOOK and EFORMS REGISTRY (if you use Organizational Forms), then you can delete them.
Based on the description, it looks like the four system folders have replicas on another Exchange 2007 server, you can just delete these system folders.
Best regards,
Belinda

Exchange 2010 - Decommissioning Exchange 2007 Coexistence and Removal of Public Folders
We are about to decommission exchange 2007, currently in coexistence with Exchange 2010.
We do not want to use ANY public folders in exchange 2010 going forward. Will do this after decom of 2007:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876883(v=exchg.141).aspx
I see this in the outlook connection status in outlook:
I have changed all Exchange 2010 mailbox databases to use a temporary 2010 public folders db named "public1" so that it is not communicating with the 2007 mailbox virtual server. However, the exact same connection status appears after I changed
the 2010 mailbox DBs to use a 2010 public folder db instead of the old 2007.
Question is, is it safe to decom the 2007 environment now? Is it normal to still have a connection to 2007 in "connection status" in outlook when the users mailbox is on a 2010 mailbox db? Is this connection related to public folders or something
else that needs modified before decom?
Thanks,
JoshSo, that wasn't the answer. I switched the Public folder DB on each mailbox database to a exchange 2010 server, PF DB, but hadn't actually moved any data from 2007 to 2010.
I didnt realize this is needed when we don't use public folders except for free-busy, default, etc.
What is the correct way to move the default public folders to a 2010 public folder?
I'm using the below URL as a template to migrate this info to a 2010 PF db.
https://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin/exchange/upgrade-from-exchange-2007-to-exchange-2010---part-ii/
"The user Public Folders then need to be replicated to the Exchange 2010 Public Folder database as well. It is possible to manually configure
all Public Folders with a new replication partner, but it’s better to use PowerShell scripts that Microsoft delivers with Exchange Server 2010. Open the Exchange Management Shell and navigate to the Scripts directory
by entering the CD $ExScripts command,
and execute the following script:
AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 -Server 2007MBX -TopPublicFolder "\"
-ServerToAdd 2010MBX"
My question is, do I have to do this "3rd step" since I don't think i have any custom "user public folders". Is this the user's free busy that I have to migrate, or is this author referring to custom PF db info?
Do I have to have public folders for free-busy and default exchange services at all in 2010? -
Problems with Public Folders in Exchange 2010
Last month I upgraded my servers from 2000 to 2010. The route I took for exchange was 2000 -> 2003 -> 2010. Everything went fairly smooth and I have had no real problems until this week. (I have uninstalled the older exchange servers.) I have been
trying to clean out some of the remnants that have been left over from the older servers (for whatever reason the uninstall did not remove the information on the new server). I used ASDI edit to remove some old information that was pointing to the old exchange
server (First Administration Group I think it was called).
After that I upgraded to SP1 and Rollup 1. The Public folder database no longer appears under Organization Configuration, Mailbox. I am not sure if it was there after my deletion or not, so I am unsure if the problem is caused by my deletions or the upgrade.
I followed the instructions found here, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727370%28EXCHG.80,printer%29.aspx . The CN=Public folders was found in CN=Folder Hierarchies. However
msExchOwningPFTree is greyed out, so I cannot update it. I have tried to delete it and remake it, same thing.
I also get the following events which I am assuming is caused by the Public Folders database not being mounted:

Also, the CN=InformationSore is empty. Is this normal?
Now I am assuming I deleted something that I shouldn't have.Tried that, I get the following when I go to the Public Folder Management Console:

And even if I did that how does that help me retrieve my missing information? -
Exchange 2003 - 2010. Moving public folders one at a time
Hi all,
I'm in the process of decomisioning our old Exchange 2003 server (long overdue after what has been a relativly smooth and trouble free transition to 2010). As the first step in the decomisioning process, I'm looking to move the public folders from the 2003
box to the 2010 box. From my understanding there are a couple of ways to achieve this (please correct me if I'm wrong). The first is to add the Exchange 2010 server as a new replication partner, allow for replication of the PFs to occur, and then remove the
2003 partner from the replication partnership. The other option is to use MoveAllReplicas.ps1.
I opted for the first option, but the problem I have is that the initial replication process started to generate a very large number of transaction logs on the Exchange 2010 server, to the point I was slightly conccerned I was going to run out of space on
the volume (our server is backed up nightly at which point the transaction logs are normally flushed).Whilst I know I could potentially increase the size of the volume or turn on cicular logging for the duration of the migration (neither of which is appealing
as it will involve down time), I was wondering if there was a way to move a smaller set of Public folders one at a time with a powershell command, or is it an all or nothing operation? My other option may be to replicate a small subset of folders everyday,
but that just a little painful as there are a large number of child folders with in the structure. Any other suggestions welcome!
Many thanks,
RobHi,
If your Public Folder Database is large, you can use tool like Exfolders or ESM to add replica folder by folder.

And it is recommended to replicate public folders off business hours.

Exchange 2013 Migration issues
I have three issues and decided to list them here. Please pick and choose to assist. Thanks in advance.
Environment:
Mixed 2007 SP3 R12 and 2013 CU3. 2007 Environment was webmail.domain.com. I installed new Exchange 2013 (1 CAS, 1 Mailbox) according to:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff805032(v=exchg.150).aspx. Exchange 2007 is now legacy.domain.com and Exchange 2013 CAS is webmail.domain.com.
Machine 1: Windows 8.1, not domain joined, using Outlook Anywhere external. Outlook 2013
Machine 2: Windows 7, domain joined, using Outlook Anywhere internal. Outlook 2010 SP2
I have migrated 1 user so far to Exchange 2013. This user was a Domain Admin. I have removed that membership. I checked the box to inherit permissions of the security of the object and reset the AdminCount attribute in ADSIedit to 0 and verified this replicated
to all domain controllers. ( I originally thought this to be the issue with it prompting for the password. )
Here is a Get-OutlookAnywhere cmdlet...

ISSUE 1
Issue: On Machine 1 (reference above) Windows Security prompt that says "Connecting to
[email protected]". Almost always prompts when Outlook is first opened. Afterwards (if it goes away) seemingly random on when it asks for it. I put in the credentials (absolutely correct) and it fails and prompts again.
I always check the box for it to save the password. To get rid of it, I click the Cancel button at which Outlook reports "NEED PASSWORD", but still acts fine sending and receiving emails. Eventually the "NEED PASSWORD" sometimes changes
to say "CONNECTED", but it works regardless.
No issues on Machine 2 so I don't know where the problem might be as there are a lot of variables in play here.
ISSUE 2
Migrated user is unable to open Public folders from Exchange 2007.
Cannot expan the folder. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance. (/o=...).
This error occurs on Machine 1, Machine 2 and from OWA, same error each time.
ISSUE 3
Apps. Installed by default are 4 apps (Bing Maps, Suggested Meetings, Unsubscribe, Action Items). I have made sure the apps are enabled in OWA and they show up in mail items on both Machine 1 (Outlook 2013) and OWA. They do not show up in Machine 2 (Outlook
2010). I'm assuming that isn't supported.
In OWA, when I go to the installed apps listing it shows all of the apps but has a broken link on the image describing the app.
When I click the app in either Outlook 2013 or in OWA, I get "APP ERROR, Sorry we can't load the app. Please make sure you have network and/or internet connectivity. Click "Retry" once you're back online.
Current workaround is just disabling them through OWA.Hello,
In order to avoid confusion, we troubleshoot a issue per thread usually.
For your first isue, I agree with Ed's suggestion to check if your certificate name is correct.
Besides, I recommend you change ExternalClientAuthenticationMethod from Basic authentication to Negotiate authentication to check the result.
For the second issue and third issue, please create a new post.

Users could not open Public Folders in Outlook 2007 SP3.
Is anybody had this issue or probably know how to fix it?
We have Exchange 2013 server and users workstations with XP SP3 and Office 2007 SP3 installed. Exchange has users’ mailboxes and public folders. Public folders work OK until last week. Issue probably happened after latest CU update for Exchange 2013 installation.
Now users could not open Public Folders in their Outlook. The error is:
"Cannot expand the folder. Your profile is not configured. (/o=First Organization/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=[email protected])"
And this "[email protected]" is public folder ContentMailboxGuid.
And this error message appears when user click on Public Folders \All Public Folders in Outlook. So company public folders do not even appear in All Public Folders folder. Users have Owner permissions for all Public Folders and Root Public folders.
Also one more error in Outlook about it:
“Cannot display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook cannot access the specified folder location.”
One more issue is that previous Exchange 2007 server died (RAID died) so we had to delete it from AD and clean its records in ADSIEdit (CN=configuration,DC=.domainname,DC=.COM > CN=Services > CN=Microsoft Exchange > CN=Organization > CN= Administrative
Groups > CN=(Groupname) > CN=Servers >) and install new server with Exchange 2013, and import all users mailboxes from backup. Public folders were not migrated from the old server because of its death. We create new public folders in Exchange and
then manually import all folders from latest .pst backup using user Outlook.
And it work OK more than a month till last week.
Thanks,
AndreyHi Mavis,
Thank you for your answer.
I check permissions couple of times for both public folder and its root and both are granted for users as “Owner” and applied to public folder and its subfolders.
This server has 2 mailbox stores and both are currently mounted.
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-MailboxDatabase -Status |fl name,mounted
Name : Mailbox Database 2104233799
Mounted : True
Name : MBDB1
Mounted : True
But when I check homeMDB property for Microsoft System Attendant in ADSIEdit I found that it is empty.
And it looks like System Attendant mailbox & service have been removed from Exchange 2013.
http://howexchangeworks.com/2013/05/cannot-open-microsoft-system-attendant-mailbox-error-during-exchange-2013-mailbox-move.html
and even from Exchange 2010.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dvespa/archive/2009/10/06/say-so-long-to-the-system-attendant-mailbox.aspx
Also I check arbitration mailboxes and all are looks to be in default database “Mailbox Database 2104233799” which is currently mounted.
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-Mailbox -Arbitration |fl name,data*

Exchange 2013 users cant connect to public folders on Exchange 2010
Hi
I recently migrated all users from exchange 2010 to 2013 and now nobody can connect to public folders.
Ive read several forums with similar issue, but none of the solutions have fixed my problem.
My configuration on exchange 2013:
ExternalClientAuthenticationMethod : Ntlm
InternalClientAuthenticationMethod : Ntlm
IISAuthenticationMethods : {Basic, Ntlm, Negotiate}
ive also removed negotiation from the rpc site on the IIS.
Is there something else im missing?
Thanks
/CarlosAre you getting any error message when accessing the Public Folder?

Exchange 2010 SP2 Public Folders Stubborn Replicas (OAB)
I migrated to a new server with 2010 SP3 all is working good, I am able to see all Public Folders and their contents fine. Now I need to delete this stubborn Public Folder on the older 2010 SP2 server to decommission it. But I get the dreadful 'you cannot
delete this database because it contain replicas' blah blah. Very annoying.
This is what the stats pulled up. They are not folders to me, and the new server is the default for OAB. Not sure what to do, I just want to delete this database the right way without resorting to ASIEDIT. I do not want to use that tool, read many horrible
stories of people deleted the database only to have hours of after affects where other public stores went into an inconsistent state. HELP!
