You cannot remove the stand on the newer Macs - so the important question is:
which year/model identifier is your Mac?

•iMac - Buy iMac with Built-in VESA Mount Adapter - Apple Store (US)

{Said by some on introduction, to add approximately $40 or so to regular
    price and early 2013 third-party press releases said the mount was extra.}
"Stand not included, desk/wall mount sold separately." -- imac apple store.
There likely is an option to buy some kind of mount in the custom configuration
section when one places an order through the retail online store page.
    Good luck & happy computing!
•PS: some older iMacs could use a conversion kit, a similar kit was available

  • Cat-proof iMac stand?

My mom just got a new 24" iMac. It's been sitting in the box, unopened, for the past 2 days. (She's scared the cat might knock it over.) Is there any kind of 3rd party add-on for the stand that can be secured to the desk, or something that significantly increases stability/surface area of the included stand?
Note: I've seen the i360 swivel stand. That thing doesn't look like it has any screwholes, or any other means to secure it to the desk, and it doesn't seem to increase the surface area all that much.

    I have that product.
    http://www.raindesigninc.com/i360.html
The bottom of the iMac stand slides into this base, and gets secured in place with a back panel that attaches with one screw. So it is not just sitting one top of the base. The base makes the bottom of the iMac larger and wider, making it less likely to tip over. It also adds weight. The bottom of the base has sticky rubber feet, so it's less likely to slide. And it has the added benefit of letting the iMac swivel "360" degrees.
If you decide to get one, be sure to get the larger version for the 24" iMac.
You could probably devise a way to use the rubber feet secure it to the table. Maybe put some of that spongy double-stick tape on the bottom of the feet.

  • How do you remove the panel on the Thunderbolt Display for cleaning?

I yesterday purchased a used Thunderbolt Display in excellent condition. The screen had smudge marks but I assumed they were hand marks that could be cleaned at home, however they seem to be on the inside of the panel.
I have seen tutorials on how to remove the iMac's display but can the same be done for the 27" Thunderbolt? If so, how?

The front glass panel is held by magnets.  Go to the store (Sears or ttol store) and buy 2 small suction cups.  Put one on each of the two corners and pull forward.  That will permit glass removal and cleaning.  This also works on older imacs (cannot use on new imac because they are glued on)

  • How i remove the stand from an Intel iMac 17"  ???

Please help...is it possible to remove the stand from an intel based imac 17" . If yes how i do it?
    Thank you

Only the 24" iMac models have user removable stands. To remove the stands from the 17" & 20" models requires opening and some disassembly of the computer. This is complicated and difficult, and would most likely void any warranty you have left on the machine if it was not done by a Certified Apple Technician.
    But it has been done by some users in the past;
    Why no VESA mount!? grrrr....

  • How to remove the stand of iMac 27 with retina

I buy a 27' iMac in US and am going to bring it back to China next week.
I'm going to remove the stand, and put the iMac to my 30' luggage. I've tested, it can be hold in the luggage, but the question is how to remove the stand "elegantly" because it's whole new and I don't want it to be "fixed"? Is that possible?

    Good morning, Macwhy.
The best box you can get is the original packing it came in.   It would have to travel as accompanied Luggage and I strongly advise you to insure it for its purchase cost if bought in China.  I would also back up the content on a separate drive.   Thank you for the stars and good luck with the move.

  • How do I remove the stand from my 24' intel imac model ( A1225)

Hello, I am moving my imac 24' from Europe to the states in my baggage. The stand mustbe removed to fit it in. Some models allow a business card or credit card to insert in the lever of the stand and the back of the imac housing where the stand is attached to. Thus oin pulling the stand levekl down with the acard inserted you will see a few srerws to unscrew to removing the stand. This is not with this imac 24' intel model number (A1225)
Are there any tips or help that one knows to removing the stand?
    Thanks..

==> Removing the 2007 24" iMac aluminum stand
==> Removing a VESA mount and replacing the aluminum stand
I recently inherited a 2007 24" iMac that had been VESA mounted.  I searched all the online boards to figure out how to remove the VESA bracket and install the aluminum stand that I bought on Ebay.  Despite 6 years since the iMac was made, I really didn't feel the online posts gave a clear answer, so I felt compelled to give my input.
First, the 'latch' mechanism that locks and unlocks the stand/VESA mount is RIGHT next to the top of the slot -- it's about 1/16" into the casing and shaped like a shallow L-shaped ledge that extends most of the length of the slot.  Here's a very effective way to hit it:
    * uninstalling stand;  put the computer on a bed at the edge; push the stand downward, somewhat hard, then slip a business card into the top of the slot, slanted 45 degrees upward.  do not push the business card hard at all.  it will hit the ledge/lever quickly.  leave it there.  now, insert a drivers license or credit card ON TOP of the business card, so it hits same ledge/lever but with more strength.  push a bit and start wiggling the stand.  the latch will release and you can now push the stand down to lock in the extended position, then remove the screws, install the VESA
    * uninstalling VESA:  the stand mechanism is already in the LOCKED/out position.  I spent about an hour trying to get it to lock into the extended position.  wrong.  it's already extended.  once you remove the VESA, install your stand, then follow the above guidance to unlock that mechanism and get your computer back upright.
There are a lot of threads on this topic.  I hope this helps some.  My main insights are two;  1) the latch/ledge is very close to the top of the slot, and 2) that ledge can be caught fairly easily by pushing the stand down and using a flexible cardboard business card, then superimposing a harder plastic card on top while you wiggle the stand.

  • 24" iMac stand doesn't align with the body??

When I look at my 24" iMac, the unit itself doesn't align very well with the stand. I noticed that from many different angles.
It looks a little bit wired, but the unit swing very smoothly.
Does anyone has the same problem too??
Will it be better if I remove the stand and install it again?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
It takes a special card that you must purchase from Apple to detach the stand from the iMac. I would suggest that if it doesn't appear to be attached correctly that you have an Apple Certified Technician check it out for you and make any necessary adjustments.

  • Removing the vesa mount - unlock the stand position?

I'm taking my iMac back to the apple store to get an issue with the display fixed (smudging in the top corners - grr) but first I need to remove my vesa mount and put the original stand back on so I can take it to my appointment.
I have got the original stand back on, but the mount is still in the extended, locked position. Does anyone know how I unlock the position of the bracket so that my iMac no longer faces down at my desk and it's position (angle) is free to be adjusted by hand once again?
    Cheers,

ah, found the link below (why is it often so difficult to find things on these forums?) - it really is just a matter of pushing in and down with the card to press the latch (which you can just about see above the bracket) until you here a click and then all is well again.
Probably would of been good for apple to put those instructions in the manual that came with the bracket...

  • Taking my 20" Cinema display on the road; how do I remove the stand?

    Hi everyone,
I'm planning to do alot of work on location this summer and would like to find a way to remove the stand attached to my 20" LCD Cinema Display so that I can pack them both into a smaller case. I've just removed the allen key cover on the right hand side (from the front) and was presented with a more complicated challenge inside the mount. It seemed to me to be a good time to consult the support forum before things went horribly wrong....
Are there instructions anywhere that show how to dissasemble the hinge where the display meets the stand? Without destroying either?
Can anyone recommend a lie-flat/two piece stand I can take with me on location?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

    Look at me; I'm clever.
    Solution found at http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/073-0933.pdf
After removing the two screws, the stand didn't want to pull off easily and I thought it may still be attached. It turns out that the attachment point was just sticky and needed a firm pull.
    Thanks internet!

How can I remove the hard drive from an iMac g4 before recycling it?

There are take-apart guides online.  For example
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html
However, you can also consider securely erasing the hard drive instead.  You can do this using a Mac OS X installation disc with a version that your iMac G4 can boot from the optical drive.  If this is a viable option, please post back (include Mac OS X version on installation disc).

    Hi,
Previously iChat had tried a Last Chat/IM option when using Saved Transcripts - which itself was an option.
iChat has also tried "Saving" the Last Chat by leaving a Chat window open and using something similar to the Lion method of showing an app in the state is was closed in.
In Messages the option to Save Transcripts has been removed and Chats or all types are saved as a matter of course.
What this tends to mean for your iChat style Buddy Chats is that it opens all the Transcripts  for that buddy as a sort of History you can scroll back through if you want  (I have  some Buddies with saved chats gong back to 2004)
With the Syncing of iMessages with iPhones and iPads (or Touches) then it seems this works slightly differently.
Although you can delete the chat and the contents of the Chat as separate action it is true that in the Beta as soon as you connect to the same Contact that the contents of the previous chats are shown to you.
I have found that Messages stores a data base of info on iMessages in Your Home Folder/Library/Messages
I have found that deleting this chat-db removes the "History" that keep popping up.
By default the Saved "iChats" are also stored in the Home Folder/Documents/iChats (At least this is the default place iChat used and they go to the same iChats folder where ever you had it)
Some people claim removing iMessages saved here stops the "History" reappearing.
In Lion the only access to the Home Folder/Library is via the Finder's Go Menu and hiding down the ALT key

  • I want to remove the VMware from my iMac intel will this remove the wind7 also cleanly ?

Hi, I know where to go uninstall the VMware (fusion),  im just concerned that if i remove VMware it wont remove the windows7 cleanly, I never actually use it, someone thought it would be a good idea for me at the time, as I was new to Mac, well I had no issues with getting along with mac I was among some of the first to have computers in the schools, things are very similar so I never required the use of it.
Also I'm wanting to know what happens to my VMware, as I didn't install it myself just wondering if I can  remove it from the trash and burn it to a cd ? for use at a later time, or would it be simpler and easy to just remove windows and leave the VMware Fusion installed,  if so how much room is VMware using. I would really like to claim back that extra memory for use with my iMac.
I Thought It would be best to ask some advice before I make a silly mistake. So any info regarding this matter would be helpful thanks

Sorry I just dont want to make a mistake and regret it later. Thanks for your help and advice Samberl awesome
