Remove Windows 8 users but keep data files

i am preparing upgrade from win8 to 8.1
all users are defaulted at another drive (d drive), not system drive
so i have to remove all the users in order to have upgrade without a need for clean reinstallation
this requirement make me (other system admin in the world) very troublesome
i have to be very careful when dealing user data files.
in official way, the user is deleted and all his files are deleted too.
is it possible to keep the user data files?  the files size may be over 2xxG.
i do not wish to copy files before removal of user account.  it wastes lots of time.
i tried to rename the user profile folder and remove user registry under profilelist registry.
it seems not Ok.   any suggestion please.  Thanks.

Hi,
As far as I know, if you have changed User folder location to other drive, you may encounter problem during upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It is probably upgrade failed.
Actually, I still suggest you make a back up for your User Profile then upgrade your system. Or if Windows  upgrade is unnecessary, I would like you keep using Windows 8 to avoid potential problem.

  • Removing podcast episodes from iTunes 12 but keeping the files

I want to be able to remove a podcast episode from iTunes 12 but keep the audio file on my computer. This used to be an option, but now I am no longer asked if I want to keep the file. It's just automatically moved to the Trash. I like to archive podcast episodes on my external drive, but I don't always feel like getting the drive out when I'm done listening, plugging it in and dragging and dropping the files. I'm lazy like that. I would keep the episodes I plan to archive on iTunes until I feel like breaking out the drive, except that brings me to my second issue: my podcasts seem to all be set to automatically delete played episodes after 24 hours, at least depending on what view I'm in. I have "Delete Played Episodes" set to "Off" in my default podcast settings, and when I context click a podcast in the "My Podcasts" view and select "Podcast Settings" it says "Delete Played Episodes" is "Off". However when I go to the Playlists view, select an episode and click the "Settings..." button at the bottom, it always says the selected podcast has "Delete Played Episodes" set to "On", even if I click to change it to "Off" in that view. So there's obviously a contradiction there. I don't want to take the chance that my played episodes will be automatically deleted so the sooner I get them off iTunes the better. Unfortunately that means deleting them, then dragging them from Trash back to the iTunes Media/Podcasts folder and into each appropriate podcast folder, which is annoying. Please tell me that the removal of the "Keep the file" option is just a bug. If Apple is, for whatever reason, trying to discourage me from moving my played episodes out of iTunes and onto another drive, then I'm just going to stop using iTunes altogether.

The iTunes Store reads your feed at intervals and caches the contents (the information, not the actual media files): when you make a change to the feed it usually takes 1-2 days for this to be reflected in the Store. Pinging doesn't seem to make a lot of difference. Very occasionally it all slows down and can take several days.

  • Fresh install of OS X Server but keeping data

    Hi,
I run a family server (Web, e-mail, VPN) from an old MacBook Pro laptop and due to a fair amount of odd errors now appearing in the logs, I'd like to re-install Yosemite, and then OS X Server back on top so I have a fresh configuration, but I want to keep the data, such as user accounts, mail data etc.
Everything is backed up twice using TimeMachine, once to a NAS and also to a local USB, and I also have a Carbon Copy Cloner bootable image on the USB Drive too, so I'm covered on the backup side. I also have a bootable Yosemite USB thumb-drive I can use for the install.
What would be the recommended approach to doing this please?

Starting up into Safe Mode does three things to simplify the startup and operation of your computer:
    * It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
    * It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
    * In Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, it runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than login items).
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts .
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all startup items and any Login Items.
Since it works in safe mode, one of these has to apply. You can also try to "zero" the hard drive and then install. I've had an external HDD, where I had to do that, before the install would take.
    I hope this helps...

  • How to turn of phone calls but keep data?

Is there a way to turn off all calls and texts but keep the data option on, for streaming music specifically. I need to be able to steam music but without interuption from calls or texts.

If you use iMessage, it will still work over wifi, so you may get messages that way still.  Also, if you have notifications enabled for email and use push or scheduled fetch for email, those will still come in over wifi as well.

  • Renaming, but keeping original file numbers problem

It appears that when I edit RAW files from lightroom in photoshop, upon saving it adds "edit" to the filename AFTER the original file number.  Since what comes back from photoshop is a PSD file instead of a RAW file it's pretty obvious that I've edited the image, so the change just becomes an annoying addition to the file name -- that is, until I go to export the images in other formats.
When exporting, I tell Lightroom to rename my files, but keep the original file number.  Since the original file number now has "edit" behind it on any of the psd files, Lightroom wipes out the file name and starts numbering them numerically.
This makes it difficult from an organizational standpoint, since I use the original file number as part of my database management.
Anybody know how to stop the "edit" intrusion in the filename, and if that will indeed fix the file numbering issue?
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Thanks!
I'm curious though -- why does it seem like a bad practice from a DAM standpoint?
Quite often my files are saved as RAW, PSD's, Tiffs, and Jpegs -- the last two going to my clients.  If they need something changed on the file sometime down the road, it's very easy to find my way back to the PSD or RAW file to make the fix if they share a file number.

  • Saving iPod 5th gen video files -- keep DAT files?

When transferring video shot with my iPod to my Macbook, each one shows up as an IMG_1234.mp4 with a corresponding IMG_1234.DAT file that is always 319 KB, regardless of the size of the mpeg file.
What are these files; what purpose do they serve?
Do I need to save them along with the MPEG video?

    Hello RBKix,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
What are these files; what purpose do they serve?
They may bey files that are generated alongside the video to hold certain information about the video, but are no longer needed once the video recording has been completed. Could be any number of things though. The important thing here is that they do not need to be copied over.
Do I need to save them along with the MPEG video?
    Again, no.

  • OSD - Install fresh Windows 7 but keep the old XP file system

Hi, I'm just wondering if anybody out there has any experience with what I am trying to do:
We are upgrading all of our WinXP machines to Win7. We are using SCCM OSD to push out the OS Image. I'm wondering if it is possible for my task sequence to take the existing data on the C: drive and move it to a newly created D: partition, leaving the C:
partition blank. Then, Windows 7 can be installed fresh on the C: partition, but all of the XP data is not wiped out.
I can't quite wrap my head around this to see if its possible. I'm using SCCM 07 without MDT.
Management is very concerned about possible user data loss, so this could be a way to appease them.
    Thanks in advance.

It might be possible, but it's nothing I've heard of anyone doing before so you're probably on own on how to accomplish it. MDT does include the ability to create a backup WIM of the drive though which is probably a much better option.
The main problem with either approach though is how do you know if you have enough disk space to do this locally? What happens when you don't?
A couple of questions for your "management":
    - If they are so concerned about user data, why do they let the users keep the data local in the first place? Sorry, but they are contradicting themselves on this one.
    - What happens if a local hard drive crashes today? Once again, this is in stark contrast to what their *new* requirement is.
Ultimately, if management is truly concerned about user data, then they should invest in a solution to maintain user data integrity all the time, not just during the upgrade. If they are not willing to invest in a solution such as this, then their requirement
isn't as important as they think that it is.
Between USMT and user guidance to ensure all critical data is within their My Documents folder, most organizations are able to successfully migrate their users off of XP without any issues or data loss.

  • Removing email account, but keeping contacts and calendar

I have a work email account setup on my iPad. I have changed jobs and would like to delete the old work account. Is it possible to remove the old email account, but preserve the contacts and calendar information?
    Thanks

Same happening here. Contacts and calendars sync between 2 Macs OK using iCloud. iCloud syncing with iOS devices worked well until Monday afternoon 12/19.
Since then (3 days) mail, contacts and calendars in my iCloud account do not sync to iPhone 4 and iPad. Photo Stream OK.
All software is up to date. Wiped iPhone and started fresh. Still syncing is broken.
OmniFocus, Evernote, Gmail, Dropbox sync OK. Safari works too.
Attempts to delete iCloud from iPhone stall at spinning pinwheel.
Likewise attempts to disable calendar and contacts services stall.
Seems this problem relates to iCloud security on iOS gadgets.
    Still out if sync.

  • How can I make a window transparent but keep its objects opaque in Cocoa-Applescript?

How can I do this in Cocoa-Applescript, Xcode? As well, is it possible to blur the area behind where the transparent window is?

You can set the window transparency with something like:
    theWindow's setBackgroundColor:(current application's NSColor's clearColor)
    theWindow's setOpaque:false
I haven't seen a way using public APIs to blur behind the window, but I'm not sure about using ASObjC with stuff like Core Image, anyway.
You might also try something like setting the background to a gray color and play with the grayscale and alpha values (colorWithCalibratedWhite:0.0 alpha:0.2, for example).

  • Trying to install Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 7 but keep getting error message 'A reduced set of content has been installed' - help!

We bought Premiere Elements 10/Photoshop Element 10 a while ago and it worked brilliantly on our Window XP machine, but since we moved to Windows 7 last year we can't get Premiere Elements 10 to work properly and always get the error message 'A reduced set of content (Instant Movie Themes, Title and Menu templates, etc) has been installed. You can install the full content by inserting your Content DVD or downloading it. Do you want to install now?'. So I've tried reinserting the DVDs and installing them. I've uninstalled all the software and started again, but each time I get the same message at the end of the process. I've spoken to the computer shop I bought the computer from and they say Windows 7 is incompatible, but that doesn't seem to be what the Adobe web site says. Please, any advice welcome as I've got a year's worth of videos I need to edit.

Are you working with Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit? What video card/graphics card does your computer use? NVIDIA GeForce? And, are you doing your download and installing with antivirus and firewall(s) disabled?
Premiere Elements 12 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
If you have tried to obtain the Premiere Elements 10 Content from the installation disc labelled for Content for your version and operating system and that is not working, then can try downloading and installing the Content from the following Adobe link if you do not decide to click on the message to initiate the content download from within the program.

  • Windows user but considering Mac OS

Hey guys and gals... So I need a new computer and I have noticed that Mac seems to be a much better choice for me if a few things live up to hype. How much does it cost to put the Windows OS on the computer. I wan't Windows on there becuase from what I understand is that programs that can only be ran on Windows (such as games :-D) can be ran on your mac through this program... Is this correct? Also when you are running Windows on your Mac is it going to get virus's like Windows seem to do.. all the time? I was looking at the black Macbook and I really liked what I saw.

The thing is that Mac makes a very good computer. Actually they make a lot of very good products. The problem can be for a new user is the learning curve.
Mac's run a bit different and it takes a while to figure out how it works.
The real drawback to Mac is software. Unless you plan to use windows somehow as a second operating system on Mac. Your familar software may be retired.
You may not find a similar product for the Mac. Research this first.
On the other hand Mac's come with a lot of software built in the Operating system. So you may not need anything else. I have used Windows (3.11)
was my first windows system, Linux. I would have to say OS 10 is by far the best OS. When WINDOWS Vista came out it made me go out a buy a copy of XP and put it on my Mac Book with Parallels. I still need Windows for a mapping program and IE for my corporate site which they refuse to make compatible with other browser's. It works just fine. If you are unsure of adding Windows and Parallels to your Mac. You can order it that way from several Apple reseller's. I really think it's just a matter of you wanting to try something new and willing to work through the changes. If you do I think you will be very happy you did!

  • Lots of choices but little data; file out puts

Can someone please make some descriptions to help know when
or why to choose any of these? Or perehaps link to descriptions?
Which ones are the tiniest files?v Thank you

    Steve,
It is all about the reason you are exporting.
Some of those are good for exporting video to be edited in other programs. NTSC DV for example. That is the format shot by MiniDV cameras. So if you are editing DV AVI, that would be a logical output for further editing in other applications.
Others, like H.264 are good for putting videos on web sites, or for YouTube or Vimeo.
File size is pretty much set when you export to DV. It is just under 13GB for an hour of video based on a 25Mb/s data rate.
Other codecs are more flexible. You can shrink the file size by shrinking the frame size, or lowering the frame rate, or most often, by lowering the bitrate. Scaling down the video has obvious results. Lowering the frame rate can cause stutter and is only good for certain footage, and reducing the bitrate starts to cause a lack of quality video.
Perhaps if you told us what you wanted to do, we could provide more specific suggestions.

  • Remove OS X but Keep Bootcamp Partition

I recently had to put Windows 7 on my 2013 Macbook Air for school. With there only being a 128gb SSD, I really don't have enough room for both operating systems. Is there a way I can delete OSX off of the computer, and merge the windows partition with the blank space left so that all I have left is Windows 7?
    Thank you!

No. From Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support
Can I resize the Windows partition after installing Windows?
No. Back up your important files, then use Boot Camp Assistant to delete the old partition and create a new one.
What you can do is install OSX on an external disk (preferably a USB flash drive - 16+ GB), and use the entire internal storage for Windows. It will let you boot from either when you need it.

  • Can I remove sepia tone but keep crop and other tone settings?

I can't figure out how to remove the creative setting "Sepia tone" without resetting all settings on an image. Is there a way?

You may be able to Copy the latest settings (using the COPY button below the History Panel). Highlight the latest settings in the History Panel and click COPY.
In the Pop-up screen, select only those changes that you made after applying the Preset, such as exposure, etc by ticking appropriate boxes.
Then Click on History Step before the Sepia Tone step. Click Copy.
It may not work if some of your changes after applying the Sepia Tone altered any settings that the Sepia Tone also alters. You can find what changes the Sepia Tone Preset makes, by right clicking on it in the Presets panel. Export it to, say, your desktop and view its contents using a text editor. The Sepia Tone does change the Tone Curve, Converts to Black and White, and alters Gray Scale Settings among other changes.
So maybe if you experiment with the Copy and paste, you may get close to removing its effects.
Otherwise, I do not know of a way of removing it without also undoing all your post Sepia Tone changes.
Maybe someone else knows a way.
