Remove Write Protection of my HD

I have two WD-My Passport HD, 500 GB. Im using them as a DJ device. I formatted them in MS-DOS (FAT), using the Disk Utilities. But after I put the songs in the HD, when I connect it to the CD Player, it appears the message "ERROR - Remove Write Protection”. How do I remove this protection?

Thanks very much for replying! I have had my memory stick for a good while and it has always worked perfectly fine on any computer (OSX and Windows) and I've been able to save or delete files as I wish. But then suddenly the stick just wouldn't let me save any files in it anymore and says it's write protected (hope that's the right term, I'm not an English speaker). So I've been trying to figure out how to remove the write protection so that I would be able to use it as I did before, e.g. saving/deleting files. I came across with tips that said that in some sticks there could be a physical switch and just wanted to make clear that this is not the case with my stick. I did found some instructions how to remove the protection in Windows, but they were no use for me. Does this make it any clearer, I hope ?

You can check this in Disk Utility.
Macs can read and write Microsoft FAT format. Microsoft NTFS format is read only unless you get a copy of this: http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/

    Hi tessiebest
Is memory card in SD adapter in card reader on your PC, as there is a little slider on the SD adapter which you can slide to "lock" write protect?
You can also "password protect" a memory card in your phone.

  • How can i remove write protection from a Hard drive

Cant write to HDD on win7 keeps saying "the disk is write protected"  Drive is in a removable IDE caddy, I put the drive in a USB caddy and was able to format the drive, but still get the same error when i try to write to it, I took ownership of the drive and it shows me as the owner. The drive was used in XP previously but i no longer have an XP system since upgrading to Win7. I have removed the partition with Paragon drive copy and re partitioned the drive, renamed the drive but still gives the same error.

I used succesfully diskpart (on my Windows 7).
In "Command prompt" (Start -> Run -> cmd) type "diskpart" and press enter.
(I wrote "cmd" and then on right click menu I clicked on "Run as administrator").
In diskpart utility (in the same dos window) you have to type "list volume".
You can see your disk (I see all my 4 partitions on the disk that give me the problem) with a progressive number index.
Type "select volume #" and press enter, "#" is the number corresponding to your disk/partition.
    Wait the response.
Then type "attributes disk clear readonly" and wait (I wait 2/3 minutes) for the result.
It says that operation was completed, and I can write on my partitions (and run checking/scanning on it).
    Hi,
The hard drive I had problems with had 3 partitions and at least one was write-protected. Just to make sure I used the above "diskpart" commands on each volume and it cleared the write-protected attributes and was able to format the 10Gb partition I used
just for storing the Pagefile.sys file.
The write-protect attribute on this WD AV 1Tb h/drive may have been added as it was previously used in my Foxtel IQ box. I used Ghost 11.5.1 to clone my failing WD 1Tb h/drive that had 1376 delays and 50 bad sectors when scanned with HDD Regenerator
onto the previously used Foxtel IQ h/drive.
    Cheerz ;)
Thanks again, I was pulling my hair out to find a solution.

    Can someone help

No, you can use a third party program like Yamipod, or XPlay2, etc. But I would advise you to download iTunes anyhow, even if you have to go to another computer and then burn it to a CD or something.

  • Disk unable to intialize - Media is write protected

    Dear community,
My WD external harddrive has suddenly stopped working after coming from Europe. I plugged in the HD into my laptop and I noticed that it does not show up under My Computer, only under Safely Remove Hardware and Devices. So I searched forums a bit and a couple
have said that I should go to Disk Management and see if my drive is there.
Turns out the HD is listed there, however as 'Disk 1: Unknown 1.379 GB, Not Intialized'. There is no blue bar either, it just says the size of the disk and that it is unallocated (it does not have a Volume letter).
When I start up Disk Management it gives me a notification:
    Initialize Disk
You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.
    Select Disk:
    Disk 1
Use the following partition style for the selected disks:
    MBR (Master Boot Record)
    GPT (GUID Partition Table)
So I click on MBR and press OK, and it gives me the error 'The media is write protected'.
So I go into the registry under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePolicies
and change the value in 'writeprotect' to 0, and then I reboot my computer. Same error.
I can't even reformat the disk because I cannot find such option, not that I want to really, because I have 1.2 TB worth of data on there that I want to keep so losing the information on this Drive will be quite.... frustrating.
    Any help is appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your advice & effort. The same message "Diskpart failed to clear disk attributes".
Here is the file of $vds$.log (only a last part of the file). How can I attached the file, I can't find your email add.  thanks again.

  • Is it possible to resize partitions on a write protected internal hard drive?

    Hi everyone,
The internal hard drive on my computer has been created into two partitions, one for Mac (350 GB) and another for Windows (150 GB).
Since I rarely use Windows (only for one scientific application from CambridgeSoft), there are a lot of free space on Bootcamp (115 GB). So I would like to resize these partitions to make it the Mac partition maximized, like 450 GB, and 50 GB for Bootcamp.
And the problem is that I'm unable to do that by using Disk Utility, Stellar Management Partition, iPartition.
It says something about write protected (images below).
So are there any ways to undo the write protected or resize those partitions?
Another small question is why the total volume as seen in the second image (iPartition) is not 500 GB, but just 465 GB (50 + 415).
All comments or suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks!
    p.s. I'm the only user.

To resize a Bootcamp partition you must use Bootcamp Assistant to remove the partition then create a new Bootcamp partition, or, use a 3rd party tool such as CampTune.
If you use Disk Utilities you will mess up your hard drive and it will be necessary to erase, format, and reinstall OSx and Windows again. You will lose all your data in OSx and Windows if you try to use Disk Utility to resize a Bootcamp partition.
And, 50 GB is too small for Windows, especially if you install programs and create/use data. 100GB minimum wouls likely work.
Back up all your data before messing with partition changes.

  • Backup failed as media is write-protected

    Hi,
I am having mds 9000 series ds-c9124-k9 switch. To this switch IBM server and tape Library is connected through fiber cables. When we try to take backup an error message is displayed which says "Media is Write-Protected". I can see the tape library but write is not happening on it. When I remove the switch from the middle and connect server and tape library directly the backup starts taking place.
Is it anything to do with the switch?
Is there anything in the switch that I need to enable for the backup to take place?

    Hi,
If the zone has the read-only attribute enabled, then disable it.

  • Second hard drive says write-protected

I've got a new 2008 enterprise terminal server. I've installed all my apps to the 2nd hard drive. Now for no reason, I can't write to the drive and my apps can't either as they all crash as soon as they need to.
I get this exact error when simply trying to create a directory in the root of the drive:
    "The disk is write-protected.
Remove the write-protection or use another disk."
I'm logging in as the local admin, domain admin makes no diff. I've also given full permissions to "everyone" with no luck. How the heck can I fix this bugger?

It could be that the ReadOnly flag is on, do the following
    on cmd prompt launch "diskpart.exe"
on the diskpart prompt, do the following
    LIST DISK
This will give you a list of all disks in your system
Note down the number of your problem disk, then do the folloiwng
    SELECT DISK x
Where x is the number of your problem disk, then do the following
    DETAIL DISK
This will list all the details of your problem disk
Check if the ReadOnly flag is set to Yes
If the ReadOnly flag is set to Yes, do the follwing
    ATTR DISK CLEAR READONLY
This should clear the flag on the disk, please retry your disk operations
If ths does not solve it, we have another flag on the volume, same command, but now on volume:
    LIST VOLUME
    SELECT VOLUME x
    DETAIL VOLUME
    ATTR VOLUME CLEAR READONLY

    Edwin.

  • How do I "un-write protect" USB flash drives?

I recently purchased a new computer that has Windows 8.  One of my many flash/thumb drives is now suddenly marked "write-protected" when I did nothing to make it so.  I found a solution listed for Windows 7.  I applied it to my
own computer, however it did not change the said drive from write-protected to un-write protected.  I simply want to move files to another storage device and re-format the write-protected drive for new files.  How do I un-write-protect my flash/thumb
drive in the Windows 8 operating system?

I ran in to the same problem but none of the instructions here helped. doing some more searching i found a different article that supplied the answer for my issue. wanted to share in case other were still having issues.
If the problem is persistent with the drive and you still can't copy files to it or format it after:-
1- You tried removing read-only permission from the drive properties
2- You tried formatting from Windows
3- You tried formatting from CMD using DISKPART
4- You tried editing the Registry solution (for WriteProtect word)
5- You tried the different free online tools like
HDD LL Format tool and HP Format Tool
Then your drive is corrupt and needs the internal chipset S/W to be flashed, i.e. repairing the USB software The
steps below will lead you to get a small program to run on your USB memory-stick which is specific to your MANUFACTURER (make) and PRODUCT (model). If you don't want to go through the headache of the manufacturer's technical support then
do it yourself as follows (which I source from here):-
    1- Get Chip
Genius portable application from here which
you will use to find the VID and PID of the USB stick chip.
2- Search for the tool to repair your USB stick S/W from FlashBoot
website . Search using your VID and PID from the previous step.
3- Search on Google for the name of the application you find in the "UTILS" column in the page from step 2 and the first link on Google Results
(usually) will take you back to the FlashBoot website to download the utility to get your USB drive repaired.
It worked for me for my Kingston Data Traveler flash drive. It didn't work with all the common options for fixing the USB drive having "write protected",
but the above solution I found after hours and hours of searching online and asking my computer-geeks colleagues.
    Hope this helps!
