Removed disk in Time Machine, now can't reselect to get my old backups back

I accidently clicked Remove Disk in Time Capsule on my MBA. Now when I try to reselect it in Time Machine (using the Time Capsule disk listed) it doesn't find my old backups.
I don't want to start again as there is all my old backups sitting on the Time Capsule taking up space. Any advice to get my backups back?
One thing I have noticed is the icon for the Time Capsule used to be the Wi-Fi 'fan', but now it's got the people holding hands icon instead. Sorry if they have correct names for the icons but that's the best description I can use. I also have no idea if this is important or not.
Thanks.

If you mean the TM Preferences window shows "None," it just hasn't updated the window yet.  See #B3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

I'm not sure what you mean.  Can you post a screenshot?

  • My 320GB external drive for Time Machine now only has enough capacity to keep a backup of one day. All my other backups are gone.  What can I do to fix this situation?

I've been using a 320GB external drive for time machine for the last several years.  The backups always worked fine and when necessary I was able to look at & restore older data from the time capsule.  Recently, I keep getting the message that a backup cannot be completed and an older backup will be deleted. Usually this wasn't an issue because I still had several months of information on disk.  Now a one-time backup takes up 315GB and therefore I only have a backup of the previous day.  I don't understand this because I thought that the backup only saves information that has changed and doesn't copy everything everytime.  What do I need to do to get my backups to a reasonable size so that I can keep at least 1 month data stored on it.?  Please don't tell me I need a larger drive ... that would be too easy.

Get a larger drive for your TM backups.
The recommended size is 3 times what you are backup. So if 315 GB is a backup then you need a 1 TB drive.

  • Undo Remove Disk in Time Machine

    Hi,
I used the Remove Drive button in Time Machine.  When I go back into Time Machine and hit the Select Backup Disk button the drive I want to use in not listed. I can connect  to the drive in Finder so connectivity is not the issue.  I cannot find a solution to this problem.  Any suggestion welcome.
    Thanks

So you removed a drive from TM, which you were previously using as a TM backup, and then you tried to select it again?
And you did nothing to the drive in between?
TM will only recognise disks formatted as HFS Extended. You didn't reformat the disk?

  • Exactly what does "Remove Disk" in Time Machine do?

I am concerned that my current TM disk is having issues. I would like to use another drive to make a TM backup but I am not ready to toss the relationshop the current disc has with my system.
Will "Remove Disk" temporarily dis-able the current TM drive as a TM drive?
Or are the implications of "Remove Disk" far more far-reaching than that?
    thank you,

    Yes.

  • Time machine problems on clean-install, doesn't recognize old backups as such/permissions issues

My iMac had been pretty slow, and never received a clean install since I'd gotten it. With the security that I'd just restore whatever I wanted from Time Machine afterward, I used the recovery partition to format the hard drive and install Lion.
Everything's fast now! It's remarkably like it was when it was brand new with Tiger, which is pretty good for a nearly-six-year-old computer running today's OS. I'm having problems with the Time Machine part, though. Even after ensuring that my username is the same as it was before and making all the permissions my own in both Finder and with chmod, it throws me permissions errors when restoring some, but not all files, with no pattern about it. This isn't a big deal for restoration because I've just used sudo cp to put everything back where I wanted it, but now I have issues with backups. Even though TM sees my old backups and can restore the ones that don't give permissions errors, it still wants to take new backups of things I've manually restored, such as my iTunes folder of about 50GB. That's the big conflict now; I don't want to take up all that space for files that are already backed up. Can anyone offer a fix? Thanks!

Yes, the other drive was backed up before. If it was previously associated then perhaps something was messed up trying to re-associate.
As long as you pointed it to the backups of that disk, it should be fine.  If not, or if in doubt, just run the command again.
It changes whether or not I have the previously-backed up external drive added to the things to back up (unless it's supposed to do delete the old ones in this case?),
I don't quite follow that.  The Estimated size of full backup is just the total data on the drives that are included (unfortunately, there's no display of them), less any exclusions of files/folders on them.
    Finally, though, the size of a backup if I were to take one right now would be 363 GB;
How do you know that?  The only way to tell what Time Machine thinks is new or changed is to actually start a backup, and see what the display ("xxx GB of yyy GB") and/or log messages (". . . xxx MB/GB requested (including padding), yyy MB/GB available.") say.  See #A1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a handy widget to display the log messages.

  • My Time Machine (TM) is taking way longer "Cleaning up old backups" if i haven't even backed my computer up for that long.

I havent backed up my computer in almost 2 years due to a complication with the Time Machine (TM)
But now it is fixed and it spends hours on "Cleaning old backups"
And when it comes to backing up computers I am always scared to fix it blindly because our Time Machine backs up 3 other computers.
Is there something I'm doing wrong or do I just need more patiences?
    HELP!!!

Cancel the backup.....unless you want to wait a few more days to see if it might work.
Erase the Time Capsule drive using AirPort Utility
Start over again with a new backup
Ethernet will be 4-5 times faster than wireless for the first backup

  • Time machine shows larger hard drive, so never deletes old backups and maxed out my drive

So I back up my Mac Pro to a Drobo Gen 2.  There is a 3tb and 3 2tb drives in it.  When Time Machine backs up, it says there is a 11.88 out of 17.59 available, which isn't true.  It actually ran out of room during a back up b/c it's putting so much stuff on there.  There is only 238.70 left. (the 3 TB drive is not used in the Drobo system, but is there in case a drive goes bad.)   My Mac Pro has 4 TB in it, and there's about 1TB left on it, so the Drobo is showing 5.19 is used, and only the 238.70 left, so all the rest is TM.  TM is suppose to delete older backups when disc is getting full.  But it's not b/c it thinks there is plenty of room.  How do I get TM to see the proper drive space, or is there a way to have TM only do a certain number of back ups then start erasing.  I'm not really tech saavy, so whoever can help and speak my language, that would be great!

To clarify, this all happened under Snow Leopard as I had said. My profile lists Tiger, since I haven't cared to update my personal profile since using that OS, and in fact I still use Tiger among other versions. I manage a lot of users. And I never got to upgrade to Mountain Lion on this system, as explained in the post above. So I don't see the confusion.
I don't think the model of Mac makes a difference for this type of problem, but in case it does, the incident was on a 2010 Intel iMac with a 4TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM. I would have mentioned that if this was a problem with hardware specific to the model of Mac. But this is more of a universal issue.
But to stay on topic, I'm guessing my old backups are toast. But if anybody has any experience with recovering from Time Machine deleting their old backups, I would be happy to hear from them. In the meantime, I am going to try to do some old fashioned file recovery, and see what I can salvage.

  • Trying to get an old backup back but can't find it!

Hey guys, i tried to update to IOS7 and everything got weird.. Now i want to restore to my backup, BUT when i klick restore from older backup, i can't find it! But when i search for the backup at C:\Users\/USERNAME)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup I find that backup, is it any way to put that map into my iphone again? please answer!!!

If you don't see the backup in iTunes. Make sure the device that you are trying to restore the backup to is up to date on its software.
I was trying to restore from a backup on a loaner phone and did not see the back up. My software on my old phone was at 8.1.2 and the loaner was at 8.0.2, after i updated the software, I found the backup.

  • Computer crashed but now restored. how do i get my old bookmarks back

running windows 7 with the new firefox
computer was restored to windows 7 after it stopped working. still has the same drive and i still have all of my old files in the "windows.old" folder.
how do i restore my bookmarks that i had from before the crash?

Your bookmarks (and history) are in a database file named places.sqlite in your old Firefox profile folder. If you restore that folder to the expected location, you should pick up where you left off (which is good if Firefox was working well at the time).

  • Remove disk from backup disks in Time Machine, old backups no longer accessible

I accidentally removed a disk from my backup disks in Time Machine. It said it wouldn't delete any backups, but after reconnecting it, I cannot access any previous backups through the Time Machine interface and it says "Latest Backup: None". The data is still visible on the drive.
What can I do? I really need these backups.

  • Time Machine: Macbook can't find external network hdd

    Hi,
I'm want to backup BOTH my Macbook Pro (Retina) and my Mac Mini (Late 2012) to an external hard drive (Western Digital My Passport) USB-connected to the Mac Mini.
Alas, this doesn't work. I can't figure out why. The Mac mini finds the disk with no problems and can backup to it via Time Machine. But when I open Time Machine on the Macbook Pro, it can only backup to the Mac Mini. That's the only location it finds; it can't find the external disk.
I've enabled file sharing and shared the external disk, and set it to be available for guests to read/write. I've even bought OS X Server and used the same configuration there (although it seems to sync it from the Mountain Lion config anyway). Still nothing, the macbook can't find the external disk, only the Mac mini itself.
What could be the problem? All guides I find is about backing up to the Mac Mini over wifi. I don't want the backups on the Mini, but on the external disk connected to it.
    Thanks!

Nope, but I see the Mac Mini as a network volume. And from it I can access the external drive (and everything else on the Mini).
So I can only see the "first step" (the Mini) but not the second (the external drive). And from Time Machine I can't specify where to save my backups, OS X will create that automatically.

  • My restore didnt work when i updated to IOS5, and then it was overwritten. How can i get my old restore back??

Ijust updated my ipod touch to ios5 and it didnt restore. i unplugged and reconnected my cable to the PC but when i reconnected it, it backed up over the restore i was trying to get.

You can only get your old backup back, if you included it into your computer backup routine and could restore the backup folder for your ipod.
If you have no other backups, your info is gone.
iTunes and iOS do not support installing backups of newer versions of iOS onto devices using earlier versions of iOS.
iTunes will not back up automatically if you are using iCloud.
Have a new iOS device and need to move your previous backup onto it? Follow the steps in How to transfer your backup from one iOS device to a new device.

No.  Not unless you did a backup that included that voice memo, then you could restore from that backup.
