Removed files still visible in folders and found by # locate

Hi!
I just removed freevo after some annoying problems that I just didn't have the time to sort out.
Anyways, after doing # sudo pacman -Rn I can still find several freevo files on my system. But
when I try to rm them I get a message that the file/folder can't be found.
This has happened to me with other stuff too. Why am I able to see the files in the folder when
arch is reporting them as missing when I try to remove them?
I really hate having a bunch of left over files on my system so I'd like to be able to completely
remove the apps I don't need anymore.

Thanks for the replies!
string: With "Seeing" I mean browsing through folders using pcmanfm. After updating python to 2.6 the python2.5 folder still exists and I can access it's contents, but when I tried to rm it I got the "file/folder doesn't exist" message.
I'll try to updatedb and do a ls in said folder to see what I get.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you have a SATA controlled hard drive. Apparently, there's some kind of bug with SATA disks and Vista and Quicktime/itunes video...and possibly Nvidia is involved as well.
The workaround is sticking the video on a flash drive in order to play it (because that avoids the SATA controller and thus bypasses the issue). It's a crappy workaround, IMO...and I'm not spending another cent on iTunes videos until the issue is actually fixed.

I connect my nokia C5-3 to the PC to put and remove music on the memory stick in the mobile. When I remove music files, they are still visible on my mobile when I want to create playlists. So It takes a lot of time to find the right files! I can't play the ones who are removed offcourse but they stay in the list
Other problem: it seems that music and videaos are put automatically on the memory stick from my PC, how do I prevent that?
    thanks!

After you added/removed music, you must refresh your music library.

  • Deleted Temp files still visible in certain softwares.

    Hi,
I want to know how to get rid of Temp files like (.dwl, .dwl2) or even come xlsx files which have already been deleted but are still visible in some softwares. For example when I do a backup using the Carbon Copy Cloner, I still get the option to choose these files for backup, which are already deleted but which otherwise don't show up in the Folders or a search in Finder.

If you mean visible in a list of recently opened files then yes you will always see them. Those programs store a liost of the most recently opened files and have no way to reference whether they still exist or if they have been moved, copied to some other place or even deleted. It only knows what That Program Opened.
As to CCC those deleted files may still be in your Trash can and it is asking you if you want to back them up. Also it may be that they exist in the last backup and since they aren't still on the drive and wouldn't be included in the new backup CCC is asking if you want to care them over from the old backup or just delete them.

  • Script to Compare File Contents in Two Folders and List Differences?

I've looked through the Forum but can't find anything that seems quite to address my problem--and I'm really new to AppleScript, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question.
I burn a great many files of varying kinds (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, PDF, etc.) to DVD everyday as part of my job. It happens not infrequently, though, that files drop out in the process and don't make it to the disk, with the result that I get calls from Manufacturing saying that I've screwed up and that random files X, Y, and Z are not on the disk that I sent.
I've tried various ways to failproof my burning routine, but utlimately, it seems like something still slips through sometimes--that is, the files are definitely in by Source Folder, but sometimes they don't leap the chasm to the disk. And since there can be several hundred files, it can be difficult to know at a glance if something is wrong.
It would be extremely helpful if there were a script that I could run to compare the contents of the folder source on my desktop (just say its called "Source Folder") with the contents of a disk I have just burned (whose name might vary, but whose folder structure is a duplicate of the subfolders in "Source Folder" that I have burned to disk. All I need the script to tell me is if there are files in my desktop Source Folder than are not on the burned disk).
Is this possible? I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer--right now, I'm printing up the disk directory and a list of the files from my desktop Source Folder and comparing them line for line, and my soul is dying.
    Please help!

This can be pretty easily hacked together using a combination of AppleScript and shell scripting.
There's a shell command diff that can tell if two directories are the same or not. You can use AppleScript to put a nice front-end on it, like:
set src to (choose folder with prompt "Select the source directory")
set dst to (choose folder with prompt "Select the destination directory/disk")
    try
do shell script "diff -rq " & quoted form of POSIX path of src & space & quoted form of POSIX path of dst
    on error theErr
display dialog "The following differences were found:" & return & return & theErr
      return
    end try
display dialog "Directories match. No differences found"
It's quick and dirty, but should get you started. It runs the diff command which triggers the 'on error' code if there are any differences. The script then reports the differences and exits. If there are no differences the 'on error' code is skipped and you get the all clear message.

  • Previous versions of CC apps still recognized, application folders and apps deleted

    Hi Adobe Friends!
I recently (June 19) downloaded and installed the new 2014 versions of my Adobe CC apps.  I did not touch previous versions (previous CC) at the time.
This is where I may have messed up.  Instead of using the uninstaller to remove the older versions (which I did try, however I had no luck.  It would get stuck after typing in my administrator password), I took it upon myself to just delete the folder (I am on a MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks) and have long emptied the Trash (so getting those files back is out of the question).
And with computers never being so simple, the Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Help apps still think I have the previous versions of my applications.
    Any recommendations?
I am grateful for any help, thanks in advance!

    Hello,
    1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.
Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences. I quote from Preran: The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.
    Good luck!

  • Removed conditions still 'visible', how to remove it permanently?

    Hi,
I put a condition in my workflow, but then had to remove it. So I removed it from the workflow builder. Now everytime i generate and activate my workflow again i still get warnings on the condition that i removed. My guess is that the condition is still someshere in a table or something.
How can i get rid of the warnings?

    Hi Robert,
    Sounds quite bizarre.
So the condition step, plus the outcomes and any steps on the outcomes have all been deleted now?
was your condition step the first step or last step in your workflow? or was it somewhere in the middle?
Try this... Open your Workflow through PFTC
    Task type = Workflow Template
Task = Workflow number without the WS
This should open your Workflow Template.
Then from the menu, click on "GoTo -> Alphanumeric Editor -> Current Version"
(Also check under the "Operators" branch - it might still be there).
Do you see the condition step still there? Delete it there. Save and try and activate now.
If all else fails, check this table "SWDSCONDEF" for condition in Workflow definition.
Other tables to check for WF definition include:
    SWDSBINDEF
    SWDSEXPR
    SWDSHEADER
    SWDSMETHOD
    SWDSMLINES
    SWDSMNODES
    SWDSSTEPS
    SWDSTEXT
    SWDSWFCONT
    SWDSWFCTXT
    SWD_BINDEF
    SWD_CONDEF
    SWD_EXPR
    SWD_HEADER
    SWD_LINES
    SWD_METHOD
    SWD_MLINES
    SWD_MNODES
    SWD_NODES
    SWD_STEPS
    SWD_WFCONT

  • I wanted to transfer 4000  photos from my PC to my IPOD and IPAD, I did this but I thought the images would be still in their folders and not in an individual format, how do I retain the folder structure and transfer?

I transferred my photos from my PC to my IPOD and IPAD, c. 4000. I thought they would be transferred in the existing folders, all I got was 4000 individual photos, how do I retain the folder structure?

If you are syncing a number of folders from your computer then each folder should get it's own album on the iPad (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236) - I assume that you've touched the 'Albums' button at the top of the Photos app so as to view them by album, and not just the Photos 'button'.
You could try closing the Photos app completely and then re-opening it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Photos 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Photos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Another option is to try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • 'Info' file count varies between original and copied folders

Unlike Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion 'Info' counts hidden files in folders (usually .DS files).  However copied folders, often to different locations, computers, etc, do not count to the same total as the original folder.  How can I stop 'Info' counting hidden files in a folder, so that I can check acturately folder contents between original and copied folders.  I do not want to have to open each folder and check the count at the bottom of the window, this is very time consuming when dealing with many folders
I hope there is an easy answer ??

You can do this simply in Terminal with the command
    ls [directory] wc -l
This will only count the files and folders at the top level (i.e., not the contents of folders within it) and it won't count hidden files.
    Examples:
if you want to count how many files are in your home user folder
    ls -1 ~/ | wc -l
If you want to count how many files are in your desktop folder
    ls -1 ~/Desktop | wc -l
If you want to count how many files are in a folder called 'Temp' on your Desktop:
    ls -1 ~/Desktop/Temp | wc -l
If you want to count how many files are in your Trash:
    ls -1 ~/.Trash | wc -l
If you want more sophisticated counts, such as subdirectories, type
    man ls
into Terminal to read the manual on the various options you can use with the 'ls' command.

  • How do I clean removed files from my library?

    Hey!
When a .mp3 file is downloaded, when you update your library, it usually creates a copy of the file so when you remove them it won't be missing. That happened to me and now I deleted those files from the music folders and they still are in the library. what should I do?

Send your feedback to Apple. This issue has been discussed numerous times on this forum (do a search on Podcasts). What you are seeing are the ones that are in iTunes in the Cloud as well as your new ones. You can go to the My Podcasts tab for a less cluttered look, but for the nonce, the list view will show all of them:

  • "Save As..." still working in Pages and Lion

Well, I'm not sure if this has been debated yet but what I find out is that the old function that we got so comfortable with in Pages, Numbers and Keynote still works after a full install of the OSX Lion.
If you do a fresh install of OSX Lion on an empty Hard Drive and then get the iWork CD and do a fresh install the old "Save As.." still works. What you got to avoid doing is don't update the iWork. Deactivate the warning about the update and continue to use the iWork pre Lion. All the Versions, Duplicate, Full Screen, Resume, Auto Save ... etc from the Lion and iWork Update 6-Version 9.1 features are not there. So we continue to work like before. No problem. There is nothing spectacular in the new update of iWork that we need. Stay with the old one and you can still have the "Save As..." and still enjoy the Lion.
    RF,

Eventually, people are going to want an upgrade.
Saving in Lion is sooo poorly implemented, I can't begin to express how frustrating it is.
Here's a simple example from using TextEdit, but it's just as bad in Pages and all the other apps.  Consider this:
I open file named database.xml file and edit it with TextEdit.  Previously, all I would have to do was hit Cmd-S or go to the File menu and click "Save".  Done.  That's it.
    Now, my save options are:
    Close
    Save a Version…
    Duplicate
    Export as PDF…
    Revert to Saved
"Save a Version..." creates a new file in the original file location named database.txt  -- not what I want to do.
Duplicate creates a new copy and now gives me the new option of "Save…" which still wants to save a text file and will force me to go through a warning dialogue to save over the original document - which I just wanted to save in the first place.
To add insult to injury, if I opened the file by browsing to it, the finder is pointed to the right location.  But if I didn't, I  have to hunt through my folders and find the location where I want to save the file, change the extension from .txt to .xml, and go through the warning dialogue stating that I'm about to save over a file of the same name.
Again, compare this to the previous work flow:
    1. Open the xml document
    2. Edit it
    3. Click save.
That's it.  No changing the friggin' extension, no new versions or duplication or hunting through folders.  No warning dialogues.
This really is a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible (I really can't say it enough), TERRIBLE implementation.  SOOOO ANNOYING!  Please give us back Save and Save As...
We went from elegant to byzantine.  This is the kind of crap we'd expect from Microsoft, not Apple.  We need to tell apple through their support pages in the apps (go to Pages menu and click "Provide Pages Feedback...")

  • What's in folders and what's not?

I recently updated to 5.1.1 from 4 something. It made a mess of my apps and folders. On the left is a list of apps with checkboxes to check whether or not to put it on the iPhone and on the right is a display of all the homepages and where folders and apps are located on them. As I move apps into folders they go into them. But looking at the list on the left I can't tell which apps have been put into folders or not. Or is there a way to tell?

I always just did it on my phone and transferred purchases. I always make purchases on my phone and transfer purchases to my Mac. Never kept the apps organized on the Mac. I always figured that since the connection between iTunes and iPhone is one way that if I organized the iPhone and the sync'd with the disorganized iTunes that it would disorganize my iPhone.

  • IMovie cannot share and no storage location set

I am using iMovie 10.0.6 on a Retina iMac running Yosemite.
iMovie suddenly developed the following maddening behavior, which I have yet to resolve despite trying many of the usual tricks:
Attempting to import to an event using my isight camera or my Canon HV20 camera in a library on my internal SSD results in the following popup message: "No storage location set: Cannot start ingest because there is not storage location set. Please set one under Storage in Preferences and try again."
It is possible to import by loading a file to my local library.  However creating a project with that file results in the strange behavior that the clips from that file remain blue and don't fill in with the preview.
I cannot share or export any project.  Clicking "Share" in file or the "Share" button displays the options, by when I click on the share option, nothing happens.
Importing to library in an external hard drive succeeds without the error message.  The clips in the projects created in the external libarary do fill in with the preview pictures.   However, I am not able to share or export a project in the external library either.
When I log into my son's account on the same machine, iMovie works fine.  I am able to import to his accounts library and I'm able to share, the share button works as normal.
I have tried the following remedies, none have worked:
1)delete the iMovie app and reinstall.
2)delete every iMovie preference in ~/Library/preferences
    3)delete iMovie caches
    4)delete iMovie receipts
    5)repair permissions using disk utility
6)reset user permissions and ACLs using "reset user password" in terminal
7)reinstall Yosemite from recovery (preserving user files)
    8) reset pram and SMC
There must be some very hidden persistent setting corrupted that is either verry hidden or not explicitly part of iMovie; perhaps a common sharing or video import application?  Does anyone have any ideas?

Brilliant - it worked for me, although I had to look around inside the
    /var/folders/
and found it under another with two letter
    Thank you ultrahertz
