Removing a lost firmware passsword

Hi Guys, and Gals
I read through a lot of posts, and found some info on the subject, but it was incomplete.
I bought an iMac 450 DV from a junk computer seller on ebay. The previous owner set the firmware password, and no one knows, even, who that was. I was going to wipe the drive, but I can't even do that. The kb article I read said you can clear it if you have access to the inside of the case, but it didn't explain how. It did say that after resetting the PRAM, you need to reset the password. So, I assumed I could physically reset the PRAM from inside the case. I opened it up, and pressed the ?CUDA? button, holding it down for about 30 seconds, but, no Glory, its still locked.
Anyone?

Hi Donna,
The firmware controls the boot process. A password can be set at that level that essentially locks the controls. With out knowing the password, you can't boot from a CD/DVD or into single user mode. You can't even reset the PRAM, or option boot to a different drive. You can boot into Open Firmware, but can't make any changes.

I know there is a way to disable it. I just don't know how, and am hoping someone here does.

  • [yaourt] patch to remove a lost pacman lockfile

I'm posting this for everyone who are lazy to remove a lost pacman lockfile.
I often misspell a package name or an option and interrupt pacman quickly before it syncs.
This ends up with pacman getting killed before it's lockfile can be removed.
I made a patch for yaourt to remove the lockfile if pacman is not running,
so I don't have to remove it manually every time.

Others have already said it, but it's worth saying again - fi you're going to use the AUR, learn how it works first before you start using any helper application. Your self-confessed uber-noobiness makes this an even more crucial requirement.
As meph mentioned, I too intended on having Yaourt only install AUR packages keeping pacman the primary in package installation.
The point is to know how to use the AUR without relying on a helper, because yaourt is more than a 'helper'. Something like 'cower' is much more of a helper in that you still have to take care of the main steps yourself. Using yaourt instead of pacman for -Syu doesn't change much, its using it as a 'pacman for the AUR' which can cause confusion. Which is as well the only reason to use it....
Durzo wrote:"learn how it works first" ...do you mean download each tarball PKGBUILD from the AUR separately, and then install with the "makepkg -is" command?
Yes. The fact that you even know that's what you have to do is already good (perhaps better than those who have right-away gone for yaourt).
There's no inherent 'negative' to yaourt (if you ignore the fact that it may not work following some pacman/libarchive upgrades) if you know how to live without it.

  • How do I remove the "Lost Phone" message from my IPhone4?

I recently upgraded my IPhone 4 to an IPhone 5c.   In the process my old IPhone 4 was deactivated, by using the "Find My Phone" Icon.  All is fine now, except that there is a message remains that states, "My IPhone is lost, please call (XXX) XXX-XXXX, which is of course my phone number.  The question is how can I removed that message?  Please note that that the IPhone 4 has already been erased and removed from my device list, on ICloud.
I would like to now dispose of my old phone, but do not want to leave my telephone number on it.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • How can I remove password from firmware?  Thank you in advance!!!

This is really causing problems & wreaking havoc on my notebook.   Does or has anyone had experience with this, and if so, how did YOU resolve this???
Thank you in advance to anyone who responds to my question!!!!!

This is what I was told by Apple Support on the phone (I had a nasty crash & lost my Max OS X operating system) Luckily I was planning to update to the newer release of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, & backed up all my files just a fww hours before it happend..I currently have version10.7.5).  The woman I spoke to said having a Firmware password really causes a lot of problems....so why did it ask me for a password?? I do not understand!!
I could swear I read somewhere if you login as Administratror; you could eliminate this password.  My system is finally back up & working. I added a seconday unrestricted login (which I should have done anyway as I know better than that!!).  I am going to check a few things out & will definotely let you know the outcome.  Thank you very much for your quick response!!!!

  • How can I remove an EFI firmware password in a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina?

This computer was bought used. The SSD in it is dead, and it has an EFI firmware password blocking all my boot options. How can I remove it? The closest store is 400 miles away.

"YOU" CAN'T. You need to take the system to an Apple store or possibly an Apple Authorized repair center and ask them to remove it.
If you bought it used contact the original owner and ask for the password. Once you know that "YOU" can remove it.
If you come back with I can't get in touch with the original owner then I have no more help for you. Take it to your nearest Apple store.

  • How the heck do you remove the Open Firmware?

Ok so here is the problem. I have a Powerbook G4 (the A1095 model). Now first off ever since I got the thing the second ram slot never worked. But my main problem is that anytime I try to boot form a DVD, use the Firewire, or reset the PRAM and NVRAM I keep getting asked for some password and a big lock button shows up.
Now after many weeks and almost completely giving up I found out that somehow open firmware was used to put in a password. Now I have tried absolutely every password I have ever used, and even some other things and nothing works.
I honestly don't know how this was even set but if it was from me it was obviously an accident. Now the other thing is that I don't have any ADMIN password. I have it set to blank so you just hit enter to login/install things. I wonder if this has anything to do with the open firmware issue???
I have tried as I said searching apple.com and many many many many many other places to find a way to fix this problem but can't find anything even close to a possible solution. I have 3 OSX boot disks, I have even tried using an Umbuntu CD to attempt to use the disk utility on there but nothing works.
To anyone out there I have tried letting the main batter AND the PRAM battery run dead and that still seams to change nothing. So I imagine its a saved file someplace on the main board. Oh and I also removed the Hard drive, and PRAM battery and attempted to boot like that but still nothing works.
I can boot up and use the computer just fine. Surfing the web, installing programs, etc. all work fine. I just can't use the FireWire transfer or Boot from anything but the main HD.
Please someone help me with this. I need to get my personal information off this computer and reinstall OSX on it. Oh and last thing, Im not sure if it has anything to do with it but the rear two fans do not seem to work either. My other G4 Powerbook seemed to have the same problem too though. Replacing the fans on that one fixed the issue.
Anyway I waisted over $500 to get another laptop (one model newer) all because of this problem and I really need to fix this so I don't have to worry about my personal information and I can finally either use it or sell it. This is such a frustrating issue, what can I do???
THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP OR AT LEAST POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION (PLEASE DON'T TELL ME TO GO TO THE APPLE STORE. I HAVE FIXED PROBLEMS THEY COULDN'T BEFORE AND I CAN'T AFFORD THE $300 BILL TO HAVE THEM INSPECT IT, PLUS THIS MODEL IS OUT OF DATE AND THEY WON'T FIX THEM ANYMORE ANYWAY. FYI TO ALL YOU EARLY MODEL G4 USERS!)

    Since http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352 says:
Warning: The Open Firmware Password can be reset and changed by any one of the following (except MacBook Air):
1-By any administrator user, as designated in the Accounts preferences (or in Server Admin).
2-Via physical access to the inside of the computer.
3-When the computer is started up in Mac OS 9.

  • Removing newest SMC firmware (because of display issues)

Hi I have the 'flicker issue' and after some researching on the net and the many forums, i have come to the conclusion that the problem is because i installed the 1.1f5 smc firmware before the 1.0 (or 1.1?) at least it's worth a try to install in correct order so that's what i'm trying to do... BUT I can't figure out how to get my SMC version back to factory setting or back to 1.0?
can anyone help me reset/uninstall/restore my smc firmware?
also if i reset/uninstall/restore my smc firmware, will any data be lost? what about my boot camp windows partitition? will it be lost? or am i just not able to use it untill i get my firmware up to date again?
I've tried this 'firmware restoration thing' (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestorationcdv10.html) but could not make it work... and i'm not even sure if it has anything to do with SMC firmware... or what excatly happens...
Thanks... I hope anyone can help or have som answers... everything here is welcome!
(sorry for the bad language... I'm Danish)
    IMac 20'' Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I would think that your flicker issue is most likely related to something else. As I recall (and if I recall correctly) there are two separate firmware updates - 1 for the SMC and one (the initial release) for the Boot ROM.
The intial Boot ROM firmware update was required to use Bootcamp beta/Windows XP (SP2). There is an updated version of the Boot ROM firmware (version 1.0.1) which runs on localized systems that use languages that read from right to left (my present Boot ROM is from the intial 1.0 release).
The SMC firmware update is suppose to address some boot related issues but I'm not sure what they are. Both will appear in your System Profiler's 'Hardware Overview'.
As for the Firmware Restoration CD, it is meant solely for recovery from an interrupted or failed attempt at updating - not reverting back after a successful one.

  • Lost Firmware Password - How to reset Firmware in G4 PowerBook

    Hi there,
My OS is 10.5.4 but this might be a little off-topic and if so, my sincere apologies.
Several weeks ago, somewhat stupidly, I created a firmware password for my G4 17" PowerBook using a third-party utility but have lost the paper upon which I wrote the password down. The paper is not where I thought I had put it.
Yesterday, completely forgetting that I had a firmware password in place, I had to reformat my HDD and have now discovered that I am unable to boot the PB due to the lack of the firmware password.
    My questions are:
    1. Does anyone know of a method to reset the firmware to its default state?
    2. If not, is the firmware located on the logic board, in which case I can replace the logic board?
    3. If not, is the firmware module replaceable or do I have to replace a complete motherboard.
    4. Any other possible solutions to this problem?
    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi V.K.
Many thanks for your feedback. However, I have tried both the OS 10 install disk and the original disk that came with the PB but still get the request for the firmware password on startup. Regretfully, no luck there.
Anyone have any other ideas that might help? All suggestions will be gratefully received and tested.
    Cheers

  • Remove open firmware

How do I remove open firmware? I have found out it is more of a hassel than protection.

Just to be clear, are you asking how to remove an "Open Firmware Password"? The actual "Open Firmware" is software installed on the chips inside your computer (not on the hard drive, but on the chips on the logic board or components themselves). You can't remove the Open Firmware there. However, it is possible to turn off the Open Firmware password.
You can find the instructions for enabling (and disabling by unchecking the option) the Open Firmware Password application in Knowledge Base Article #106482.
    -Doug
P.S. It can be removed by force if you have physical access to the computer. I know how, but you can't post the instructions here!

  • Removed ip access-list & lost network connectivity

An access-list was removed to edit and replace. Once the access-list was removed we lost network connectivity to the remote router. This list is an extensive one. But when we remove on other remote routers network connectivity remained. Can anyone tell me why? Is this a typical of access-list, and good practice is to wait until after business hours?

    No problem.
I am sure that we have all had experiences of looking at things we have written, or questions answered, and realized that what we wrote was not quite what we were thinking as we created it.
Your main point is well taken that it is good practice to remove the access-group before removing and changing the content of access lists.
Sometimes I take a slightly different approach: I will build a new version of the access list using a different number (if I am changing access list 101, I may create list 102) which is the modified version of the list. I then change the access-group to reference the new version of the list. This may have a couple of advantages including the fact that the interface is always protected by some access list. Also it makes backing out changes easier if we discover that there was some flaw in our list modification.

  • App Store icon removed/lost

The App Store and Safari icons were removed or lost from my iPad screen?

Three possibilities and things to try.
Swipe from screens to screen to look for them.
Check Settings>General>Restrictions and make sure that you didn't disable installing apps and Safari.
You can also reset the home screen layout and the icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
