Removing a Search Engine

I don't like Yahoo being the default first search engine in my list. Going into "about:config" and changing the default engine there is only temporary, as it reverts to Yahoo again after a complete Firefox install. I tried going into the Firefox programs folder and removing the yahoo search plug in. A temporary fix as well, as when I reboot the PC the search engine is restored, and Yahoo is the first item listed again. I like to choose my own, rather than the program choose for me. Why is Yahoo insisting on staying, is it a collaboration between Mozilla and Yahoo that integrates it? Or is there another way to achieve my request?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

How can I remove the search engines that got added last time I upgraded on android? I have been able to remove them in the past so why not now?

I have always chosen FireFox because it has generally offered me options to work the way I want to.
I am not even remotely interested in having a whole load of redundant search engines begging me to use them whenever I type anything into the address bar of the browser.
However, some wise guy has decided that on the android version of the browser these are now essential to the correct and stable working of FireFox and so I am stuck with them. (Unless I go back to Google Chrome, which I am reluctant to do.)
Please reinstate the ability to remove this sort of clutter/spam from my favourite browser.

All of a sudden when I get into google on safari I get directed to dlink search and can't to remove that search history eventohough I cleaned the search history

If it was added through extensions, Safari menu -> Preferences -> Extensions. You can't remove the default search engines.

Can not remove yahoo search engine from search bar

I have tried to use the suggestions listed but I am very dense and need a walk through. How do I permenently remove yahoo search from my list of search engines?
I can remove it by manage search engines... but it comes back.

I had the same problem...I searched many forums for answers...Finally this one works.
Click Start....Click Run...enter this:
c:\program files\mozilla firefox\searchplugins
A page opens showing all the search engines in firefox.
Simply right click the ones you do not want and delete.
It has been a week now and Google is still my only Search engine

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Why did Apple remove the search engine for serial numbers for technical specifications?

I use to be able to look at the specs of all my apple devices by looking up the technical specifications by serial number. It appears this function has been removed from the website. I would like to add that this feature of the website was incredibly useful and removing it creates alot of confustion for me because I would like to upgrade my MacBook Pro but am unable to find the technical specifications.

I've seen a report that Conduit may be bundled with a scam "utility" called "MacKeeper." If you installed MacKeeper, you should remove it according to the developer's instructions. It's worthless and causes many problems reported on this site.

Search.US.com has taken over my hone page and everything else it can. I have tried all the suggestions available to me by the help section. I have went so far as to delete cookies. This is very invasive. I looked at restoring the system but have few options for recovery points and they don't include the search engine download. I removed the add on it came with as well. I had removed the search engine in add/remove programs and was stupid when it asked if I wanted the default settings restored. I said no. I'm afraid I am j pretty stupid when it comes to software. I finally got a hold of someone at that search us.com. They gave me this link to try and solve the problem. I have already reinstalled firefox but it might help someone else out. And it's much simpler. I haven't tried it but they said to get a hold of them if it didn't work. the link is:
Running ResetBrowsers.exe from http://support.search.us.com/uninstall.php should restore your settings to their defaults

I use Firefox 6.0.1 on Windows 7.
I installed '''Free Desktop Clock 2.37''' from Drive Software, and then Firefox was hi-jacked, though I carefully chose the custom installaion.
Edit: Free Desktop Clock itself does not hi-jack Firefox. It's another program (name forgotten) bundled with Free Desktop Clock that did it, adding a toolbar, changing the homepage, changing the default search engine, etc. Actually, those forced alterations can be changed back easily, such as a resetting of the "keyword.url" pref. So, "hi-jack" may be a description that's too strong.
Anyway, I have managed to clean it up -- unsolicited toolbar, forced homepage, forced default search engine, etc.
But there is still one problem.
In the dialogue window of '''Manage Search Engine List''', which appears when you click the drop arrow on the left of the Search Bar and then click Manage Search Engines, the '''Restore Defaults''' button is disabled (grayed out).
How can that button be re-enabled?

Is Free Desktop Clock still listed? If not this may be because the listed search engines are the defaults, so there may be nothing to restore. If you manually added other search engines, you may have to reinstall those separately.
