Removing access to "PC Settings" Modern UI app (but allow Control Panel access)

Hi all,
I have just deployed Windows 8.1 Pro to a number of machines and am having an issue with the "PC Settings" Modern UI app - this allows users to modify local users (i.e. create new local users, modify existing local users) and play with settings
that they shouldn't be messing with! This happens even when though the "Show only specified Control Panel items" policy setting has been configured (which works correctly with the classic Control Panel).
The only way I can get this blocked is by enabling the "Prohibit access to Control Panel and PC Settings" policy setting; however, this also blocks access to Control Panel, which is required for users to access
keyboard, mouse and printer settings.
Is there any way to block access to the "PC Settings" Modern UI app? (I have already removed all Modern Apps (and provisioned apps) possible by using the usual PowerShell cmdlets).
The users need to be able to add/remove printers and modify keyboard settings (nothing else), hence minimal Control Panel functionality is essential. I need to be able to block all settings being accessed from the PC Settings Modern UI app though!
Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, AppLocker is only available in Windows 8.1 Enterprise / Ultimate. We are using Professional.

Protecting files directory, but allow server side access

I have a files directory that stores PDFs and doc files. Users that log into my website can download and upload files to/from this directory and never visit the file URL. I want to be able to restrict access to files via the address bar, but allow my code
(pages on the same server) access to the directory.
Is this something that can be done?

permissions are set with NTFS on the folder containing the files. NTFS permissions can be set for domain users or with everyone group.

Data access disrupters (DAD's)are not being displayed on control panel

Hi,
Data access disrupters are not being displayed on Application server control panel (sid.host.domine > HTTP Server > mod_plsql Services >DAD's ) But users are able to access their applications.
Not able to see database access details through Application server control panel. Can you please tell me where could be the problem exists..

I am assuming you mean Discriptors (instead of Disrupters) and I am not sure which release of Application Server you are running. But assuming it is 9i (say 9.0.3 on Windows), if you select the OC4J instance or container the applicatlion was deployed to. You will see a link to Data Sources displayed below Application Defaults.
The files equivalent will be found in your <ORACLE_APPSHOME>\j2ee\<INSTANCE_NAME>\config\data-sources.xml

Hi guys I need to restrict access to the settings with a passcode but also need passcode for the screen lock due to MS Exchange. Can these codes be different?

We are introducing iPhonse into the business but have a question regarding security. We need to restrict user access to the settings on the iphone probably via a passcode. We also need the user to have access to their emails (which when using exchange enforces a passcode). Is this the same passcode that is used for both by default? Because if it is then by allowing the user access to their emails they would by default have access to the code that allows them to change the settings of the iphone?
Does anyone have any knowledge of this or how I can achieve something similar.

Is there a way to protect the iCloud control panel access with a password in Windows 7?

I have MS Outlook sync'd with my iCloud services in my Windows7 office PC (I'm pushing for Macs, but quite there yet, unfortunately!), and I have it password protected so nobody else can access my files. However, the iCloud app in Control Panel doesn't have any password protection so it can be messed with at any moment. Is there any way to protect it, or are there any plans to include this feature in future updates?

Same here, I use iCloud on an office PC.
I would like to password protect the access to the iCloud Control Panel. Is there a way to do that? I can either "Sign in" or "Sign Out."
if I sign out I can't add iCloud calendar to Outlook. If I stay signed in, IT could easily activate my personal iCloud mail.
Ideally, there should be a checkbox to just add calendar and leave mail, contacts and task out all together.

Cannot remove older version of Apple Update to reinstall Itunes, tried control panel, no help, what do I do

Message: "Cannot remove older version of Apple Update" when trying to reinstall Itunes. Tried using add remove programs in control panel, no help. Tried installing new quicktime, same message -- what do I do to get Itunes working again on my computer, using Windows xp

As I went to bed last night, I thought the same thing as you, to try a system restore. Otherwise, to answer the rest of your question, in XP, the location of the Update is in your Program Files/Apple Software Update.
To find the hidden files that may be stopping you from disabling the updater, and doing a clean install, go to:
My Computer, and on the Menu bar, click Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden Files and Folders/click Apply/OK then double click on your main drive (C:) then Documents and Settings/your user name/Application Data/ and delete the Apple computer folder with it iTunes and Preferences.
Also in that previous views Local Settings/Application Data/Apple (Update Software)and also Apple Computer/iTunes.
Go back to Documents and Settings (again from C: drive mode) click on All Users/Application Data/Apple and if you open up Installer Cache, you will also see that it has an Apple Updater in it (unless it was uninstalled on the original uninstall). Also from that Application Data window, you will see Apple Computer Folder which has previous iTunes info that needs to be deleted. Some of these folders may be gone, but at least you can check to see, to make sure.
Here is a link from another post, to confirm or help clear up any of my paths/solutions.
When you've done all that, restart your PC, and I would run CCleaner (the free version links are just below the Buy and Download button) just to clean things up, and try your re-install.

Otterbox hindering control panel access

Just updated my iPhone 5 to the new ios7. With great excitement in my fingers I start swilling through the new features only to find that I cannot access the new control panel. Anyone else have this issue. It seems to me that my trusty otterbox defender case is the issues. I hope this is just a temporary issue as I cannot see giving up my case. And suggestions or common issues I would like to hear about them.

Oh please. This is a major change in the GUI that will affect a great number of users with cases. Anyone who requires significant protection for there phone is likely not going to be able to use the Control panel. In addition to the popular Otterbox cases, I am also having this issue with the Lunatik case. Note that these cases in no way hindered the use of the phone with iOS6.
I would be nice if Apple would give the option to enable the old method of accessing music and brightness controls (double click the home button and swipe right).
I'm restoring to my pre-upgrade backup and sticking with iOS 6 for as long as I can in the hopes that Apple will address this.

How do i remove the settings and preferences of the iCloud Control Panel?

I had problems with my Office 365 (Outlook 2013) and making it work with iCloud. I repaired the install of my office 2013, but the iCloud Control Panel keeps giving me an error as it thinks the icloud integration for Outlook 2013 is still installed....which it isnt.
I cannot revert to the setting i had with only Photostream active.
The only solution was to uninstall the iCloud Control Panel. I tried deleting some files from users->roaming->apple, which looked like preference files. But after reinstalling iCloud Control Panel, it immediately opened the old setting which it remembered somehow and uninstalling didnt deletet, stating the faulty Office connection is active...which it isnt.
Pity i cant even now use photostream, to have my images on my desktop. I know i should buy a mac..where you can jus simply delete preference files from the user library. But does anyone know how to really delete every install history of the iCloud Control Panel on a pc. So i can do a clean install and start using photostream again

thank you for taking the time to reply to my issue. was there something i did that caused this to happen and if so, can i undo it? a second problem has now surfaced; i cannot get my firefox to load. i tried the suggestion in an article on this site i.e., to bring up the Task Manager and end the process for firefox.exe so i can uninstall/reinstall the firefox application. this does not work for me. HELP! i'd much rather use firefox than explorer.

E73 running symbian etc. on T-mobile network. Used on an Wireless LAN for calls / web as well as regular cell, as per most people.
I found (looking from both PC-suite and via phone's application manager) that I had new installs of Fr0MA_0x2000E2FC, the Fr0MA_installer, MDM_Client, Media DS Plugin, MMS DS Plugin, PIPS Installer,etc. Never saw them earlier.
These are new to me, but web searches show they can be associated with digital rights. However, given potential power of the Apps from a remote site I was worried.
Questions for forum:
1. If I remove them is there any risk to phone use (i.e., if needed can I reinstall them).
2. Where are they likely to have recently appeared from (another app's support, malware, T-mobile or Nokia).

Re. MDM and froma processes:
Killing the running mdm_daemon processes etc., prevents downloads from the Nokia site / Ovi, but their loss apears to do nothing else to phone function otherwise. I dont do music downloads from Nokia or other sites...
I presume they would also fail as the DRM targets.

Delete any of these, and the program will reinstall them again (possibly with a prompt) the next time you connect your phone. So these are perfectly harmless.
I don't have a PIPS Installer entry (but do have a "Pipes Upgrade"), so that one is a mystery. Who is listed as the vendor, Nokia or somebody else?

Clean Access Agent fails to login "normal" user but allows "Administrator"

I have the following problem. When a user tries to login using clean access agent (OOB+VG), the login process fails. When an administrator tries to login, the process works.
What could be the problem?

By the login process failing I mean that the machine is not assigned an IP address by the DHCP server

To uninstall language package try following steps:
Type lpksetup.exe in search charm.
Press enter to open Install and uninstall display languages wizard.
Try to uninstall it.
If there is any error happened, post back here.
