  • Removing icons from Finder window sidebar after 10.6.7

Not a major calamity, but since upgrading to 10.6.7 I don't seem to be able to drag icons off the Finder window sidebar to remove them. In earlier versions of SL they would disappear in a small puff of smoke.
Right-clicking and contextual menu command does work though to delete the icons. Two machines - 24" and 27" iMacs, no exotic third-party software.
Curious if anybody else has seen this or if there's a fix?

Use command-drag, changed in latest update credit to I forget who.
    EDIT Link Davis, it was!

  • What are these shared computers and how do I remove them from Finder?

I have four Macs on my closed, hidden wifi network. Two iMacs and Two macbooks. For some reason, two unknown computers are showing up on the network, but only on two out of the four macs, one imac and one macbook, incedentally the two units with built in SD card readers. They are: hp0025b3e8a8ca and hp3c4a921329ca. I'll post a screen shot. They both have one folder called MEMORY_CARD and I can't open it. I've double checked, I don't have SMB sharing enabled on any of my macs. They have the little icon associated with a windows machine. Any idea what these are and how I can remove them from finder? is someone else on my network?

How are u connected, as in ISP, University Network, etc.? I get shares like that too, as my ISP here in Nepal is using some crazy way of sharing connections with customers. I called and asked them once, but they have not clue about Macs. I suspect it's a technician doing some work in the office, who is tapped into the same C1 connection that I am using, but it is a bit disconcerting to see computers you don't know on your Network.
When I teach in Thailand, I am on a university system that will show all the users connected to the same hotspot. That's why I lock down my sharing when there. It's kinda crazy, as I don't really understand all the security settings and what they imply. It would be nice if there were a guide for home/small business Lans on what exactly the settings should be in OSX, but I suppose it's all out there in Google, somewhere...

If you remove it from your iCloud account in a web browser, the only way to add it back is with the device in your hands to re-enable find my ipad in your iCloud account settings on the iPad.

  • Cannot remove a broken sidebar network folder alias in Finder window

Mac OS 10.6.7 -- WinXP Home
I have a created netowork folder alias in the sidebar of my Finder window that points to a shared folder on an officemate's PC (WinXP Home). This folder has been deleted on the officemate's computer. Now, in my Finder window, I cannot click on the alias. Clicking on the broken network sidebar folder aliases or dragging them off of the side bar (they used to vanish in a puff of smoke but now they don't) does nothing.
I can right/control-click is but the only option in the sub-menu is "Open Sidebar Preferences..." and nothing else (other aliases have all the options including "Remove from sidebar"). I can't even drag the folder aliases off of the sidebar in a puff of smoke either. I'm at a loss on this one.
Any ideas how to remove these broken sidebar aliases? Even opening the sidebar preference panel yielded nothing I could see that would help.

If you have installed Developer Tools on your Mac (Optional Installs on your MacOS X installer DVD) then you can delete individual aliases in the Finder sidebar, using Property List Editor, which you'll find in Developer > Applications > Utilities.
In your Home folder go to User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Control-right click and choose Open With > Property List Editor.
Scroll down to "useritems" and click the grey arrow next to it to reveal contents.
Click the arrow next to CustomListItems and you'll see a list of entries marked "Item" with a numeric suffix.
Click the grey arrow next to the Item whose number corresponds to the sidebar alias that you want to get rid of and you'll see the info associated with that entry, including its name, as seen in the sidebar.
If it's the right one, click again on the Item header (i.e. "Item [x]") and hit delete.
Quit Property List Editor and Save changes.
Quit and relaunch Finder and that item will be gone from the sidebar list. Everything else will still be there, and you won't need to rebuild the list.

  • Removing Shortcut Icons from Finder Window

In the left side of the Finder Window, there are little shortcut icons like "Music" and "Applications" and the like. I dragged a folder into this window for easy access. I no longer have the folder on my Mac, but the shortcut icon is still there.
How do I make it go away? Every time I right- or left-click on it, I simply get a message saying the folder is no longer available.

Select the item and drag it out of the sidebar. It will "poof" away.

  • Alias on Finder Window STUCK

You know when you open a Finder window? Up near the back button an alias for a .dv file appeared today. I'm not sure how I got it there, but there it is.
    How do I remove it?

Files with .dv extensions are Digital Video so I would assume that it is from a digital video camera. If you double click on it what happens?
You should be able to remove it by ctrl+click and then selecting "Remove From Sidebar".

  • Possible to email from finder window?

I know this should be simple but, how can I drag and drop a file from finder to email it instead of composing a new mail message and then navigating to the file?

Chances are that this and the problem described in your other thread are related. If the problems persist after doing what I’ve suggested there, look for additional information that may be available in the form of error messages written to the Console:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. Reproduce the problem and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result.
    <hr>
You may also try the following to check whether the problem is system-wide. Beware, however, that setting up the same Gmail account in multiple user accounts would cause messages downloaded while logged in as one user to not be available for download while logged in as the other, regardless of the Remove copy from server settings:
    1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts and create a new user account for testing purposes.
    2. Either log out of your main user account or just quit Mail so that it does not interfere with the other user account.
    3. Log in as the newly created user and set up Mail anew there.
    4. For spam-related security reasons, go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. If you set up a POP account, go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced and disable Remove copy from server after retrieving a message if it’s enabled, to avoid messages being accidentally removed from the server while testing.
    6. Check whether the problem also happens when logged in as another user.

  • Removing folder from Finder Favorites??

I created a folder a while back called 'pics' to put in photos that I was editing.  I put a shortcut to the folder in the favorites list in Finder.  I recently reorganised my folders and decided that I no longer required the folder.  I deleted it from Finder.  However, I have just noticed that the 'pics' folder is still on the Finder Favorites list.  I have tried to drag it to the trash as well as delete it from the list to no avail.  It is still there!  When I click on it to see if anything is in it it does nothing.  I can move it etc but not delete.  Does anyone have any idea how to remove it?

A year or two later and you're still helping people, very impressive! A quick google search brought me straight here. I'd been longing to get rid of these old burn folders for months especially with their icon that looks  worryingly like the radioactive hazard symbol. Maybe you can also explain exactly what the point of the favorites list in finder is in the first place as it seems to cause no end of problems. Many thanks.

HOW DO I REMOVE MY PASSWORD FROM FIND MY IPHONE APP?

  • Export File Names from Finder Window...

I want to export all the file names in a finder window to a file that I can use in Excel (txt, csv, etc.). Can I do this directly from the finder window somehow?

The answer just above is excellent.
One additional point which might assist when importing into a spreadsheet.
If you use a simple naming convention which I developed about 6 years ago for exactly this purpose, you can sort on various features of documents, etc.
The name of each file is:
    International date,originator,receiver,subject
    This structure looks like this:
    2008-09-12,dwc,you,naming files for spreadsheet use
THis allows for automatic date sorting or date structuring of files chronologically
It allows one to know who or what was the source of the document
It allows one to know to whom it was sent
and it allows a brief subject with keywords
More important, because commas are used to separate the fields, they can
be used as delimiters when importing the text file into a spreadsheet, thus allowing far greater sorting capabilities.
    Best wishes,
