Removing boot camp partition?
So I'm having a little problem. I wanted to install XP on my Macbook so I can play FFXI since there is no Mac version. I have 33gb left on my hard drive. I go to create a boot camp partition of 15gb so I have room for the game and a little extra. My macbook locked up half way through. My hard drive now says 16gb, yet when I load up Boot Camp Assistant, I don't have the option to remove the partition, return it to one. It's like there is no partition, it asks if I want to split mine. How do I get rid of the partition now?
Restart the computer with the Shift key held down; if the computer reports it's in safe mode, see if the problem is corrected, and then restart normally. If not, restart the computer with a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD in the drive, open the Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and use that to repair the hard disk(not permissions.)

Is it possible to completely remove the boot camp partition (under Snow Leopard) without having to reformat the HD and reinstall everything? I don't need it now that I am using Parallels with an XP virtual machine installed on my OSX partition.

Once in OS X go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and set OSX to be the default.
On the next reboot ist should automatically boot into OSX.

Removing/hiding Boot Camp partition from VMWare Fusion?
I've just created and configured a Windows Vista Boot Camp partition and all is well. However I don't want to use it within VMWare Fusion but VMW displays it. Is there a way I can stop it from appearing in the VMW menu?

How do I make a clone of the Boot camp partition?
My MacBook Air (10.6.8) is having problems and I need to send it away for repairs. Before I do that I want to make a clone of everything and put it on my new MacBook Pro (10.7.2)
I am making a clone of the Mac partition using Carbon Copy Cloner. That has worked well as a backup for me.
The only problem is I need to make a clone of the Boot camp partition (Windows partition) and I don't know how.
I want to make an exact clone so it has all the operating system, files and everything.
The other question is when should I make a Bootcamp partition?
Should I migrate the clone to the new mac using Migration Assistant, and then make a boot camp partition? And then what are the exact steps putting the clone onto the boot camp partition?

Casper 6 does seem to work;
WinClone was handy for XP users but doesn't for instance check for errors during the backup only during restore. Winclone was discontinued at 2.2, all 2.3 versions are hacks (removal of the OS check seems to be the main thing) There has been no deveoplment or support for a while now.
Acronis 2011 w/ plus pak, didn't work well previously

Casper 6 works for Windows on Boot Camp only
CopyCatX is more lengthy and sector copy so takes the longest.
Paragon Hard Drive Suite 2011 because it works great

Windows 7 system backup and restore - Apple's goofy HFS read-only interferes with system and file backup.
I have also used Casper, Clonezilla and Paragon but less regularly, Casper failed a few times, I stopped using it, Clonezilla worked but took forever (for me) Paragon (which I have only used twice) was the best but my sample is limited.
I have restored from DU, CCC, SuperDuper and TM, they all worked, TM was slower but not a lot, you can boot from the others, which I prefer.
HDM 2011 can do either offline or online backups, the difference is that with an offline backup, the entire partition (or disk) is unallocated. In an online backup, the backup utility is running against a partition that may be making changes to itself. When you run CCC or SD! in OS X, you're running an online backup. However, I would recommend (at least for the first backup) that you boot from the HDM recovery CD to do an offline backup. This will ensure that you have an *exact* copy of the parition/disk.
Since this is you first time backing up your partition, I would suggest using one of the Backup Wizards. They'll guide you through the backup process and keep you from doing something wrong Similarly, use the Restore Wizard to restore your partition/drive.
HDMS 2011- back up a dual-boot Mac to an external USB drive, do:
1) Boot from the Recovery Disk (I'm assuming that the backup hard drive is attached before you reboot)
2) Select Paragon Hard Disk Manager
3) Launch the Backup Wizard by selecting Wizards > Backup Wizard
4) Select the Mac hard disk (not the partition) where it asks "what to backup"
5) On the Backup Destination page, select "Save data to any local drive or a network share"
6) Hit the radio button for the "Save to local drive option" (unless you got a boatload of DVD's )
7) Select the external USB drive as the backup destination
8) Look over and correct the name and comments
9) Hit Next to start the backup
When it's done, you have an entire copy of your Mac's HD saved to external media.
If you need to recover your HD, just run the Recovery Wizard and reverse the process. -
I have a MacBookPro 9,1 (mid-2012, non-retina) running OS X 10.8.2. Here is what I have done to my system:
Installed Windows 7 x64 Pro to a boot camp partition; installed all windows updates.
Using WinClone, save an image of this boot camp partition.
Removed optical drive and HDD.
Installed HDD in place of optical drive.
Installed SSD in place of HDD.
Booted to recovery partition, installed OS X on a flash drive.
Booted to flash drive, created fusion drive using [MacWorld's instructions](http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html)
Booted to recovery partition on flash drive.
Restored system to fusion drive from a Time Machine backup. Unfortunately, it seems that because I never installed OS X on my fusion drive, I do not have a recovery partition. But that's an issue for another day.
Using Boot Camp assistant, created a boot camp partition on my HDD.
Using WinClone, restore my Windows installation from the previously created image.
Now, Windows boots to a black screen telling me that it can't find a bootable device. I have tried a few things to resolve this, all without effect:
I know that VMware Fusion has to prepare a boot camp partition in order to virtualize it, so I figured it might inadvertently fix things. Alas, while it *did* successfully boot my boot camp partition into a virtual machine, I still can't boot into Windows.
I figured I'd just try to reinstall Windows. Surprisingly, my system booted to my Windows install disc, which was in my original optical drive (which I had put in a USB case). But, Windows refused to install, giving me a an error 0x8030024. It seems the solution to this issue is to disconnect all drives but the one on which you want to install Windows, which is something I would dearly like to avoid. It would be a pain, but more than that, I'm afraid it would bork my fusion drive, even if I'm careful to never boot to OS X with the SSD disconnected.
A lot of places said that this error results from a borked MBR, and suggest using a tool like gptfdisk to rewrite it. I followed the instructions [here](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4144252?start=0&tstart=0), but *that* didn't work either.
I am now completely at a loss as to how to proceed, and Google isn't much help either.

1. New Mini with internal 500GB with Mountain Lion(ML), put into an external FW enclosure, so the Mini can/could be booted using an external drive for contigency.

How do I back up my Boot Camp partition to external firewire drive?
I have a 15 GB Windows XP Boot Camp partition (FAT32). I want to back it up to a 120 GB external Firewire drive. (I know the backup won't be bootable). In OX X Disk Utility, I formatted the external drive as MS-DOS (FAT). I planned to do the backup using the Windows Backup utility.
However, when booted into WinXP, Windows will not recognize the external hard drive. I thought I might need to create a FAT32 partion of 32 GB or less on the external drive, but I apparently can't do this in OS X or Windows (since Windows doesn't recognize the drive).
Any suggestions on how to backup the Boot Camp partition will be appreciated. I'm mainly interested in preserving all programs and data. Ideally, a clone could be created that could be restored back to the original partition in bootable form, but from studying this and other forums, it dosn't seem to be easy to do this for a FAT32-formatted volume.My goal was to create a bootable clone of my FAT32 Boot Camp partition, while at the same time increasing the size of the partition from 15 GB to 32 GB if possible. This is what I did:
1. As suggested in this thread, I used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I formatted it as MS-DOS (FAT), and made it 32 GB in size.
2. Used the Finder to copy all files from my 15 GB Windows XP partition to the new disk image.
The following steps were only to determine if the disk image is a viable backup:
3. Removed the internal hard drive with my original Win XP partition, and installed a new internal hard drive.
4. Used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 32 GB Boot Camp partition on the new internal drive.
5. Inserted my Win XP installation disk and started the Windows installation. Formatted the new partition as FAT32. (I used the long rather than the quick format method--not sure if this was necessary.)
6. Continued the Windows installation to the point of restarting the computer, at which time I used the Option key to boot back into OS X.
7. Used the Finder to copy all the files from the 32 GB disk image to the new Boot Camp partition. (This overwrote a few Windows files installed by the aborted Win XP installation.)
8. Restarted and used the Option key to select the new 32 GB Boot Camp Partition. Windows booted as usual with all files, programs, etc. from the original 15 GB partition. Windows did complain about "new hardware" and required a restart, but all appears normal.
This indicates that the disk image containing all the files from my original Boot Camp partition is a viable backup, and can be used to restore the partition if necessary. I'm not sure if formatting the disk image as MS-DOS (rather than Mac OS extended) was necessary, or not. -
Help with boot camp partition on leopard!
So I wanted to increase my partition disc size, because I ran out of space. So I restored it and started the whole process over again, using like 75 out of the 102 gigs of free space. This time, something went wrong. I window came up and said:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use the disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended(journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
All I want to do is repartition it... I need help plz, thanks. Oh and I assumed the big files were obstacles so I deleted some 1-6 gig stuff I used to use not anymore(not any system stuff either) but that didn't work. Help!I bought a new MacBook today with Leopard. I tried to install Windows XP (with service pack 2). I chose 32GB for windows. When I clicked start installation the screen went white, the windows CD was ejected and nothing else happened.
I had to switch it off manually and then I tried to restart the MacBook. The screen was just black.

I couldn't reboot it into the Mac OS X so I went back to PC World and created merry ****.
They blamed me and I blamed them and said there was a formatting problem. I left the MacBook with them and they said they would try and install windows XP for me. I collect it today.
What do I do if they can't get windows on there as I don't really understand what I read above so will need something a bit clearer....step-by-step.

BSOD every 20 minutes running windows XP in boot camp partition
Has anyone else had this problem? Everything was running fine for a couple of months on my new mac OS X until around the time I installed the recommended updater to Boot Camp 2.1, then Windows XP started crashing every 20 minutes exactly, BCCode : 1000007f. One line of discussion suggests it's a boot camp problem but uninstalling the update hasn't helped. Others seemed to think it might be a graphics card incompatibility. I've now been advised that it's a Norton 2008 problem and I should uninstall that although I haven't tried yet. But the every 20 minutes must be some clue to what's going on. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks Axel. I removed Norton 2008 with the uninstall tool and hey presto no more BSODs so far (24 hours). I've also replaced Norton with Kaspersky. I guess this is really a Norton/Boot Camp compatibility problem but it's weird that Norton ran without problems on my system for five months until I installed the Boot Camp 2.1 updater. Having said that, I now see that there are a couple of discussions on this in the Boot Camp > Installation and Storage topic list ...
In one of these, Mark Davidson3 resolved the problem by completely uninstalling/reinstalling his Boot Camp partition and is now running Norton again with no problem but I wonder if that's because he must have uninstalled/reinstalled Norton in the process. Like me, the crashes had started for him only after he installed the Boot Camp 2.1 updater. Presumably Norton would run again on my system now too if I reinstalled it.
Has anyone out there talked to the Norton/Boot Camp people about this? -
Backup to TImeCapsule including Boot Camp partition
I used Boot Camp to install Windows 7 Professional on my new MacBook Air, and have now got Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac working OK with a Windows Virtual Machine. But I am reluctant to remove the Boot Camp partition. Now I have got TIme Capsule/Time Machine working OK for automatic backups - but the BootCamp/Windows stuff is not being backed up. Can anyone tell me how to include the Boot Camp partition and all my Windows-based work in the automatic backup 'of the entire machine' (the reason I bought a Time Capsule) to Time Capsule? It seems that only the MAC side of the machine is being backed up hourly by Time Machine. Can't find anything in Knowledge Base or Help about this. Thanks!

Possible. But they generally don't seem to have much training on Time Machine or Time Capsules.
Info on the whole question of backup & data protection is fairly thin in the Apple world - or am I looking in tihe wrong place or calling it the wrong thing? thanks

The Invisible Boot Camp Partition
Basically, my Windows partition does not show up on my Mac side of things.
It shows up in Disk Utility as "disk0s3" but is not mountable. It cannot be mounted if I use the MacFuse and NTFS-3G solution. It cannot be mounted with Paragon's NTFS for Mac OSX. If I open up VMWare Fusion it detects a Boot Camp partition but cannot run it saying instead there is not mountable device. Also, in System Profiler, the partition does not show up under the Serial-ATA section where my OS X partition does.
That being said, Windows runs fine with no issues that I've found.
The way I had to install it was via a work-around since I'm another one of those people who could not format my partition during the installation process. Instead I partitioned via Boot Camp, then used an Ubuntu disk to format the volume to NTFS and install Windows, which worked perfectly sans the OS X side of trouble.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem be it either reinstalling Windows another way or may figuring out why OS X can't see it?Solution: Remove the volume and reinstall windows via another method. Hopefully 10.5.2 will fix the Boot Camp issues...

I ran the test 5 times and received the same error (last 4 digits change), so I have booked it in to my local AASP to be checked under Applecare.
I was preparing it for collection today and decided to remove my Boot Camp partition. Afterwards, I ran the AHT 3 times and now I'm getting "no problems found".
Is it likely that the Boot Camp partition was causing the error? If so, can I safetly dismiss it?
By the way, I'm an ACSP and I've gone through all the usual diagnostic proceedures.It's strange that Windows causes that type of problems. However, I recommend you to take the Mac to the Apple Store so they can check your computer. Also, I recommend you to run Apple Hardware Test again, because it may not detect a hard drive problem

If you want to get rid of Windows and the BC partition use the Boot Camp assistant program to remove the Win/BC partition. Don't do it manually with Disk Utility Use the BC A program. -
Can I delete the mac partition used to create the boot camp partition?
I am using Mac OS 10.9.5 on a late 2011 17" Macbook Pro.
I currently have an SSD in the primary drive slot with my primary Mac partition and an HDD in the Superdrive slot that has one unused Mac partition that I would like to delete and a Windows 8 partition that I would like to keep.
Can I delete the extra Mac partition on the HDD so I can use that as spare space? It was the Mac partition that was used to run Boot Camp and create the Windows 8 partition that is on the same drive so I am nervous that the Windows 8 partition needs to rely on that Mac partition to work for whatever reasons.
I recently went through a huge ordeal to create a Windows 8 Boot Camp partition as I wanted it on my computer. I had previously taken out the Superdrive and replaced it with a data doubler and the original hdd, and I had an aftermarket SSD in the primary drive bay. I had been using the SSD as my Mac partition and the HDD as spare storage space. For my Boot Camp config, I wanted to split the HDD into 2 partitions and make one Windows 8 and the other spare storage space while keeping the SSD dedicated to my Mac partition. Achieving that required removing the SSD, removing the data doubler, reinstalling the Superdrive, putting the original HDD back in the primary drive slot, installing and updating Mac OS on the HDD, using that Mac install to run Boot Camp and create a second partition for Windows 8, installing Windows from the Superdrive, and then putting everything back by taking out the Superdrive, putting the HDD back in the data doubler, and putting the SSD back in. Everything works now. Understandably I don't want to break anything and have to redo this process.
That said I do want to delete that extra Mac partition and use it as extra storage, if I can do so without breaking the Boot Camp Windows 8 partition.ilovemac wrote:

Wrong advice. Do not use Disk Utility. Use Bootcamp Assistant to remove the Bootcamp partition and return the drive to a single OSx partition. Using Disk Utility will result in lost space, lost data, and possibly an unusable OSx partition. Read the Bootcamp help and user guides. -

Launch the Boot Camp Utility. You'll have the option to remove an existing Boot Camp partition. Delete it and the space will be returned to OS X.
