Removing character styling in CC?
Wondering if there if there is a shortcut buried anywhere in InDesign CC that allows character styling to be removed?
As an example:
I might currently select a word in a paragraph and apply a pre-made italic character style (usually using a numbered shortcut, eg keypad 1 on right side of my keyboard applies italic version of my body font).
If I subsequently change my mind and want that word back into Roman, I (slightly laboriously) select the same word and then call up the character styling palatte and then click '[None]' at the top of that palette.
It would be nice just to play a keyboard shortcut that does the same (ie, take off any character styling applied to that individual word).
I thought I had found it within the CC keyboard shortcut sets under Edit > Keyboard shortcuts > (Product area) Text and tables > Clear Character Overrides but it doesn't seem to work.
It's not a major thing and I'm probably just being a bit dim but any help appreciated
Thanks Grant. And sorry - once I posted my question a link came up on the side that gave a full explanation as well:

Problem solved, many thanks.

How to remove character from cube
Dear Friends,
How to remove character from info cube.
I have removed from info source and update rules.
but unable to remove from cube.
Regards
RamuHi,
If you are working in BI 7.0, then you can use remodelling to remove the characteristic from the cube without deleting the data.
But, if you are working in BW3.x, then definately you need to first delete the data, then delete the characteristic and then again activate the cube and load the data.
There is no other solution except the above one... -
Parse a string to remove character
Hi,
Can you please help. I have a string like "1a" or "12c". Is there a way I can parse this to remove the character values, leaving "1" and "12"
Many ThanksBy using
[url=http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang
/String.html#replaceAll(java.lang.String,
java.lang.String)]String.replaceAll(String regex,
String replacement)To remove all non-digit
characters:replaceAll("\\D+", "");Or to remove all
letters:replaceAll("\\p{L}+",
"")(Check
[url=http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/util
/regex/Pattern.html]Pattern doc if you want to
refine it.)
Also, you should note that String.replaceAll does not modify the Original string, it returns a NEW string with the modified value. A string is technically immutable.
so you want the code to be something like:
String cleanString = String.replaceAll( whichever pattern you choose );

I just wanted to understand, you wanted to remove special characters from an existing field value. Or you want to give the validation at the time of feeding the value.

i am performing a query on an oracle database and unfortunatly someone hit the enter key a little too much when entering the data and now it screws up all my formating. Is there a way to remove the characters in sql or java without going character by character?
Grab your query as a String and do a .replace. If you're on 1.4Beta, you can use regular expressions or a regular expression package for earlier versions of JDK. Either way, it's a little hit or miss, since there are going to be some instances of the character that you want to keep.
I'd actually leave the data alone. Garbage in, garbage out, right? Your software can't anticipate every lame user error. At some point, the issue becomes one of training.
Hope you nailed down that Swing stuff. -

How to remove character names from the drop down
I was writing off screen dialogue. Normally I would write FRED (O.S.) but when I did this, Story treats it as a new character - different dot in the outline. In trying to correct it I now have four different instances of the FRED character that pop up in the character drop down list. How can I make the ones I don't want go away? How do I indicate a character is off screen without creating a new character?
I hadn't noticed this as I use a (VO) tag under the character name rather than (OS) but this is a good point. I agree, simply ignoring anything in parantheticals is a good way to go on this one. It all goes to the same name then. Good ideas.
Not sure about all the formal formatting issues as I'm really an experimental filmmaker so I don;t get that involved int he formaities but can't you also simply write these as follows:
JUDGE LAWLESS
(VO)
Why did Jesse go and shoot that old goat anyway?
To represent his voice being heard over the scene. Or is this indicitave of the person being physically on camera for the scene but overheard as an inner dialogue?

I want to replace & a m p ; with &.
(I've put spaces because the forum encoder is changing the code)
I tried string1.replaceAll("& a m p ;","&");

Also tried
string1.replaceAll("& a m p ; amp;","&");
and it is not working.
What is the correct code?philip wrote:

Only a very small percentage of the methods in the standard API both change the state and return the instance on which the method is invoked, usually as a convenience for method chaining. Unless you're absolutely sure about what you're doing, it's better to assign the returned value to the same or another reference.

To remove last '/' character
I need to remove '/' character and string comes after it. I will give an example.
CREATE TABLE TAB (COL1 VARCHAR2(50));
INSERT INTO TAB VALUES ('hIA/SS/TTTT/FFFF');
INSERT INTO TAB VALUES ('hDFF/AA/S/AAAAAAAA');
I should remove the last '/' and string comes after it so when i query , i should get result as
hiA/SS/TTTT
hDFF/AA/S
Please help meHi,
Welcome to the forum!
Here's one way:
SELECT col1 -- if wanted
, REGEXP_REPLACE ( col1
, '/[^/]*$'
) AS up_to_last_slash
FROM tab
;Regular expressions can be very convenient, but they can also be slow. If performance is a problem, try this instead:
SELECT col1 -- If wanted
, NVL ( SUBSTR ( col1
, 1
, INSTR (col1, '/', -1) - 1
, col1
) AS up_to_last_slash
FROM tab
;This is basically what Chris posted earlier, except that it returns col1 unchanged when col1 does not contain a '/'.
Thanks for posting the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements; that's very helpful!

I have a character style that changes the line spacing. The GREP definition that applies it is a period. This selects everything bu t the Endo of Paragrpah character (EOP). The result is that the entire paragraph reformats but the last line of text has the wrong spacing.
I am new to GREP and have not yet found a way to include the EOP character in the change. I have tried the statement : .*$ but that has no affect.JES5910 wrote:
Try defining a paragraph style with a smaller font and leading size then the default style and apply it to the pragraph using GREP definition of a period (all characters).
That's exactly what I did. I started with 12/14 and changed to to a style using 8/9. Everything changed.
There is no need to select all the text in a paragraph to assign a paragraph style since the style is aparagraph level attribute. You cannot have more than one paragraph style applied to a single paragraph, so it is IMPOSSIBLE that the end of paragraph marker has a different paragraph style applied than the rest of the paragraph. It IS possible, however, to apply a different character style or local formatting to it (and that's one reason it's better to use a triple-click instead of dragging to select an entire paragraph), so if the last line is not picking up the corrct spacing, the EOP character is either character styled or locally formatted.
The only way you would know if this is the case is by selecting the EOP character, either as part of the entire paragraph, or by itself. If the paragraph style is then listed with a plus sign, there's local formatting applied. If not, check the character styles panel and I think you'll see a character style applied there (it would say mixed if you've selected the entire paragraph, unless of course you've applied the same character style to everything, which would be a major mistake).
You can use GREP to remove the character style, if that's what it is, by searching for \r and in the change format set the character styel to [None]. This would work for all paragraphs regardless of waht the leading should be. If the incorrect specification is a local format, however, you would have to either select all text and remove local formatting (which might remove somethign you want, as well) or set up GREP searches to look for the \r with the correct paragraph style in the find formatting, then change the leading explicitly for that style inthe change formatting.
