Removing clients off of "Shared" in finder

This wasn't a problem in 10.4, but on our newer macs running 10.5 and up we are seeing that when we enable Remote Management all computers that have this enabled show up under Shared in the finder, which makes for a HUGE list and makes it impossible to find the servers through all that mess. Is there a way to specify at least for client computers to not be able to see eachother under "Shared".

Hi Wingman011, the only thing I could find on this topic was this post.
You could control the list of computers displayed by controlling this setting on the clients but leaving it for the servers.
May do what you need.

  • Finder crashes when I turn off File Sharing in a Shared Mac

    Hi,
Situation: I have 2 laptops: a Macbook Pro Retina and a Black Macbook (ca. 2008, Snow Leopard). I have turned on File Sharing on both ever since and enjoyed being able to transfer files from one to another.
Lately, whenever I turn off File Sharing in my Black MB, turn it off, or basically use my MBP retina without being connected to my Black MB thru File Sharing, the Finder of MBPR is extremely slow. Every time I open a new window, open a folder, or switch tabs in the sidebar, it is extremely sluggish.
However, once I turn File Sharing back on in my Black MB (or pretty much whenever I get connected to my Black MB), everything is back to normal.
Also, even when I "eject" my Black MB from the "Shared" list in my MBPr, MBPr automatically reconnects to Black MB.
Any ideas on why this happen?
    Things I've tried:
    1. Clean caches
    2. Restarted PRAM
    3. Reinstalled OS X ML
    Same result.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped during that interval. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • I Finally Found A Solution To Removing MobileMe Off MacBook

I had posted a question in trying to find some way to disable or remove MobileMe off of the MacBook because I kept getting that MobileMe pop up dialog box telling me to sign in, even though I originally signed up for the 60 day trial of .mac. The account settings from .mac carried over to MobileMe, but I never used the account and forgot about it until I started designing a test website design using iWeb. Every time I tried to publish or visit to test the site, MobileMe box kept popping up and I just wanted to disable it, but couldn't get rid of it. I could not sign in with my original @mac.com name and passwords were not working to deactivate or cancel the account.
My advice here is only for Mac users who are not using MobileMe or don't intend to sign up for the service in the future. If you are using it for your website, then please disregard the procedure.
First, you will need to download a free utility app, Find File. When you run the app, just open it and a dialog box will pop up and the alert will post as: Find items whose name contains: type MobileMe. You will then get a list with many files and their links which are mostly located in the System Library, but there are others and some are invisible unless you use Find File app. Keep trashing the files until you get a "0" list and you will also notice that the MobileMe icon has been removed for the System Preferences. You will also probably have to type in yur Admin password to remove the files.
After all the MobileMe files have been dumped, Repair Permissions, restart and test your various Mac apps and 3rd party software.
I can make no guarantee that my procedure will work in your particular system, so please do this at your own risk. I worried about kernel panics or startup issues, but so far things seem to be OK.
There is also a chance that using iWeb will still try to access MobileMe, so if that happens, we will have to investigate this issue further. I also did the same procedure to dump that annoying iGlasses plug-in 7 day trial that popped up every time I opened iChat and FireFox for over a year! ind File found the iGlasses files and dumped them and finally, hopefully, that plug-in is dead.
Please report back here if you found success in removing MobileMe, only of course if you are sure you don't need it.
    Steve

One more thing I failed to mention. As you find the MobileMe files and their links, you may want to back those up or drop them in a master folder on the desktop and make a list of where in the System/Library they are located. I did this myself just in case I had to reinstall them.
    Thanks

  • Apple TV 2, have to switch on/off home sharing to share

Hi I have just got an Apple TV 2 (I already have an Apple TV 1). I use it with my iMac for iTunes home sharing. Everything is updated: iMac Lion v10.7.1, iTunes v10.4, Apple TV 2 v4.3. Th eApple TV 2 is wireless to an Airport Extreme, iMac is wired to it.
Ive set it up and evrything seems to work fine. However when the Apple TV went to sleep, it showed "My Library" under computers, I clicked it, it then showed the list, clicked movies, but it said "no movies are in this library" or something similiar.
I tried with all music, TV shows, Podcasts etc, and nothing. It was connected to network as have full signal. Also can browse You Tube etc. I was stuck. I decided to switch off Home sharing in settings, switched it back on, and tried again and everything was there!?!
I've now had to do this everytime I want to browse my iTunes library. Movies stream fine once connected. Is my Apple TV broken? surely not, its only a week old!?
    please help
    cheers

Seems like there's loads of other threads with same issues, not just on here, but also other forum sites. it looks like its a massive widespread problem.
Really disappointed I thought this would work fine, I have an AEBS, iMac, Apple TV thought they'd work fine.
I've talked to someone who contacted Apple direct via telephone, a Technician, and they basically gave up! they ultimately just said to reboot everything, put everything to factory default, which they did but still no good.
I was hoping this Apple TV 2 would work fine, and I was going to replace my Apple TV 1 with another, as I find I have to switch off my Apple TV 1 due to the heat issue.

  • HT202213 Have newest version of ITunes and a new AppleTV. ITunes File Home Sharing only shows option to turn off home sharing.  No home sharing icon and Apple TV claims home sharing is not turned on.  Where is this advanced menu?

Cannot get home sharing to work with my new apple TV.  Have the latest version of ITunes and the apple TV is connected to my wi-fi network.  The instruction page says to go to the Advanced menu option of ITunes and choose Home Sharing.  This option does not exist.  The closest I can find is under the File option>Home Sharing where my only option is to turn off home sharing.  There is no home sharing icon and Apple TV insist that the home sharing is not turned on.
I must be missing something obvious here.

Sounds like some hardware issues, meaning you'll want to take or send the iPods in for service or repairs. You can choose to have Apple do an out of warranty exchange for the prices indicated in the link below or find another third party service perhaps even local to your area.

  • Can't turn off printer sharing in 10.4.7

I came in this morning to check on my lab computers and noticed a ton of duplicate printers on my network. I narrowed it down to a single computer, but I can't seem to turn off Printer Sharing in System Preferences. The only thing I changed recently was upgrade/install the latest version of CUPS.
Any suggestions on how I can turn off Printer Sharing? Is there a command line cmd to turn it off?

Just to make sure you didn't overlook the obvious (we all do it more often than we care to admit). Can you toggle the other services in the Sharing pane? Perhaps you just need to click on the padlock and authenticate before you can make changes.
Second thing to try. Make sure System Preferences is not open. Look in the user's Home folder/Library/Caches. Find a cache item com.apple.preferencepanes.cache. Delete this item. Log the user out and log back in. Now open System Preferences and see if you can make the changes.
Third thing to try. Here are the items that get changed in the /etc/cups/cupds.conf file when you turn Printer Sharing OFF---
    line 55 becomes
    ServerName 127.0.0.1
    lines 453 and 454 become
    #Port 631
    Listen 127.0.0.1:631
    line 581 becomes
    #BrowseAddress @LOCAL
    line 635 becomes
    BrowseInterval 0
    line 826 Allow From @LOCAL
is deleted and the block from line 822 through 826 becomes
    <Location />
    Order Deny,Allow
    Deny From All
    Allow From 127.0.0.1
    </Location>
All these changes are taken from a modification of the default cupsd.conf as supplied with the version of CUPS Apple supplies with Tiger. The cupsd.conf that comes with version 1.2.x is most likely different. You will have to do some comparison and interpretation.
    Hope this helps.
EDIT: Don't forget to recycle the cupsd whenever you make a change to the configuration file.
    sudo killall -HUP cupsd

  • How do I remove an app (family sharing) that was previously approved?

    Greetings -
With Family Sharing, we find that the "approve purchase" feature is wonderful - but what if we approve an app that, later, we decide was a bad idea?  I can't seem to find a way to permanently unapprove it - even after removing it, and "hiding" it in the purchases list for every user, it still shows up with the cloud download icon in the app store (i.e., it can be downloaded again without approval).  I need this to be reverted so that, if the app was requested again, it asked the family organizer (me) for approval.  Is there a way to do that?  If it's important, my two girls both have iOS devices - but I'm approving the requests on a Mac.

If you've encountered the activation lock and previously associated that device with Apple Configurator, bypass it from there.
If you've encountered the activation lock but didn't associate that device with Apple Configurator, take it and its original purchase receipt to a physical Apple Store or otherwise contact Apple.

  • How do your turn off home sharing on a ipod

I have to iPods and I would like to turn off home sharing off how can I turn it off

Welcome to the Apple Community. It isn't home sharing that matters here. I suspect you are wanting to either de authorise a computer or remove a associated device from your ID, you can do both of these in your iTunes account settings on a computer.

  • Removing myself from family sharing group.

Can anyone share with me the steps to remove myself from family sharing in Yosemite?  I tried to setup family sharing but the system is telling me I already belong to a family.  I am unaware of this and don't know the steps to look up the parent relationship for deletion.  So I'm looking for ways to either find out who the parent is or a self deletion process.  Thanks for the help.

  • Kick clients off airport extreme.

Im going to assume it is simply because I cant find it, but how can I kick a client off of my network. I have found the log showing the users connected, but I cannot find out how to kick them off the network.
Shutting of the internet access via MAC address ban is not what I am looking for. Also, anything that requires a restart is not an option, as it will cause myself and all other users to loose connection (which cannot happen).
Simply put, how can I kick a client off the network like on every other router?

I don't think "every other router" out there has this ability either, but I know what you mean .
I could easily kick clients off my Linksys WRT54G. However, I do not think what you are asking to do is possible in the AirPort Utility. The only way to keep a client off the network (that I know of) is through the MAC setting. You just ban the MAC address. Obviously not the solution if you do not want to keep the client off permanently.

It's probably the MacDefender scareware trojan horse. If you have this here is how to remove it.
    1. Open Activity Monitor look for MacDefender process double click on it and hit quit or force quit.
    2. Go to System Preferences, Go to accounts, Go to login items look for anything related to MacDefender hightlight it by clcking on it once. Then hit the minus sign to remove it.
    3. Go to applications folder and drag MacDefender to the trash.
    4. Open finder and do a search for Macdefender and remove anything you see related to MacDefender.
    5. Open Spotlight (the little magnyfing glass in the menubar far right corner) and do a search for MacDefender.
    6. Restart your computer and empty trash.
    7. If you feel you need to have virus protection for your Mac use ClamXav. It's the recommended AV program for MacOSX. Hope this helps.
