Removing computer file from ITunes Library

I accidentally added a folder on my computer to my ITunes Library in error. I can't seem to find where I'd go to "de-select" it. Every time I try to sync my IPod, it looks in that folder and locks up because it can not upload the file inside the folder . Can anyone help? Oh yeah, my computer is Windows Vista.
Cheers,
Mike

Find the track in iTunes.  Right-click, Show in Explorer, and delete the file.  Back in iTunes, highlight the track and hold Shift while you press the Delete key.

  • Can't drag files from itunes library (to anywhere) anymore.

Recently I've noticed I can no longer drag files from the library in my itunes. I can't drag them to playlists, and I can't drag them to the desktop.
I have repaired permissions and even tried removing the library.xml file and let it generate a new one, but I still get the same result.
I am on a mac os 10.6.8 Macbook Pro.
I'm not sure when ths started happening, but I wonder if it has something to do with an itunes update. I have the newest version and always dwnload the updates. I can still add files to the library by control-clicking the files and selecting the option in the dropdown list. This isn't an intentional change in the way the program works is it? Is no one else having this problem??

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • Delete file from iTunes Library and Computer

I convert a lot of my own TV shows for playback on iPad/iPod touch. Once I have watched the show I delete it from my library.
It used to be that when I deleted from my library, I would get a message asking if I wanted to delete from library only or from library AND computer. It does not ask me this anymore.
I went into preferences and clicked on "reset all warnings" but that didn't fix the problem. Any tips on how to restore this functionality?

What I mean is I don't want an extra copy of the file made when I add something to my library. I already have the file where I want it.
I did try your suggestion, and just as I suspected, it made an extra copy in a different location on my computer, then when I deleted it, yes, it asked me if I wanted to move it to the recycle bin, but it only deleted the copy, not the original.
I'm marking your response as helpful, as I can use it as a workaround if I can't find a better solution, but I have never done it this way before. I've always had full control over which folders my shows were in, and only one copy. And when I've deleted, it has deleted the original file, not just a copy of it.

  • How to remove dead files from the library?

    Hello.
I'm using iTunes (7.6.1.9) on Vista (32 bit) mainly for synching my iPod (nano 3G). I organize my files with other tools like mp3tag. Sometimes I rename the folders where tracks are stored (e.g. I add the release year to the folder name). All this is done outside of iTunes.
Now, when I want to access tracks in iTunes, it happens that iTunes doesn't find the files (because the folder or files were renamed). I can re-add the folder to the library, that's no problem.
But how can I remove all dead files at once from the library? I don't feel like searching the complete library myself (for this is what a PC is made for, isn't it?).
Is there any tool that can help me with this?
    Thanks in advance
    Martin

You can use one of Roberst Jacobson's scripts - iTunesRemovenotfound:
    http://home.comcast.net/~teridon73/itunesscripts/
Or if you prefere to do it in iTunes:
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks for deletion.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

  • Transfer from 2G to 3G removed all music from iTunes library

When I got my used 3G iPhone today, the AT&T store told me to plug it into my laptop (dell, windows xp) and it will sync and that is all I need to do.
Well, I didn't sync or back up the 2G, I just put the new one in and that synched and backed up all right, but iTunes now has nothing in my Music or Apps.
After several sync and backups, still no iTunes music. I have all my music on 2G and on iPod.
Took computer to the AT&T store and we couldn't locate a backup that has my music since I tried so many times already today. My backup is in C:\Data\My Music\iTunes and has 1 song not 417.
How do I get the music from my 2G or iPod back into iTunes in order to add/sync it to my new 3G?
    Please help
    Deb

You guys...iTunes is such a DRM freak, if your trying to use it for the music you pirated from Ubekastanian websites dont even bother, it will delete it. Unless you purchased it off of iTunes, iTunes itself won't help you. What you need to do is google Show Hidden Files mac/windows and make your iPod or iPhone show those F00, F01, etc files. Just copy all of those files onto your desktop or your Music file, and then import it all into iTunes. If you want to organize it, you can sort through it yourself, although if your iPod has as much music as mine it will be a job.
Next time, back up the iPhone. I use this system when Im trying to get music I got from used iPods on to my iTunes library.
If you have a Linux machine, usually Ubuntu, Fedora, or some other form of Debian, then go into the iPod files and copy them all on to your desktop and back onto the iPod. Linux deletes all forms of DRM--its REALLY nice.

  • Editing a file from Itunes library

    Hello,
I called Apple care about this and they recommended asking here because they don't know how to edit files from I tunes library.
I have a live talk that was recorded on an MP3 recorder and given to me as a Wav file. I want to edit and cut out a live song on the beginning of the talk before burning copies because the quality is bad. I tried monkeying with this by changing the format to aiff or aac etc and when I try to drag it to garage band it doesn't import it. I also tried exporting it to garage band and it saves it as a text file and it's greyed out and I cannot open it.
Does anyone know how to accomplish what I am asking??
    Thanks very much

yes there can be and hopefuly you have it in AAC -- don't have to but recommended. Use iTunes to set the 'start playing time' to the time after the song. When you imported your live talk file into iTunes, find the file and right click it then choose "Get Info". Choose the "Options" tab. In it, you will see a box and the words "Start time" next to it. Check that box and edit the start time that you want. In your case is the time when the song finish playing. Press "OK". Right click on the file again and this time choose "Convert Selection to AAC". A new file is being made which will start after the song just finished played.

  • Delete files from itunes library?

after you've loaded a bunch of songs onto your ipod, will it affect your ipod if you delete them from the itunes library?

If you manually control your ipod you shouldn't lose the songs but if it is set to sync, you will
I have my ipod set to manual since it connects to more than one computer in the house to access songs.

  • Quick way to remove duplicate files in iTunes Library folder?

I "consolidated my iTunes Library", which caused iTunes to place duplicate mp3/mp4 files in my iTunes library folder (I assume it copied them all over from my backup drive) which has doubled the size of my iTunes Library folder.
Keep in mind, that iTunes actually shows only one copy of each song/video within the app. It's only that the actual files have been doubled on my hard drive. iTunes is only using half of those files.
Is there a way to quickly identify and delete the duplicated files on my hard drive that aren't being used by iTunes?

This information from Doug should help you decide what you can use.

  • Unable to remove rogue podcasts from iTunes library

    Hi,
I've recently imported some mp3 files into my iTunes library. The files were tagged as podcasts but after I imported them they didn't show up in either my music or podcasts libraries. The only place I could see the files in iTunes was in any smart playlists they happened to meet the criteria of.
I've managed to fix this problem by copying the files in Finder, removing their ID3 tags, then re-importing them into iTunes. However, the rogue versions of the files tagged as podcasts are still popping up in my smart playlists. I can't remove them.
Has anyone had any experience with this problem or otherwise know how I might fix it?
    Cheers!

  • Is there a fast way to remove duplicate files from itunes?

I relocated a lot of my music on my computer to a single folder so there would be less clutter. So far as I know there is no easy way to relocate all of my music without going through each song one by one, and I have a rediculous amount of music so this was simply not an option. Instead I dragged everything back into itunes from that folder. Now I have a large number of 'ghost' files in my itunes and I was wondering if there is a fast way to get rid of them all without selecting and deleting them all individually?

I actually have scripts for reconneting moved media, and I could have shown you how to move the library without breaking the links. Normally moving the entire iTunes folder and then shift-starting-iTunes does the trick. Sometimes it is possible to put a broken library back together again.
I'm working on a rebuild of my DeDuper script which will merge stats from missing files before deleting. It's been on the back burner for a while but the lack of show duplicates feature in iTunes 11 has prompted to have another look at the issue so with luck I'll get it done in the next few days. That would be one way to tidy up.
If you just want to remove all the dead tracks right now you can download and install iTunes Folder Watch. Point it at your iTunes Media folder, connect it to your .xml file and enable the option to Check for dead tracks on startup.

  • Cannot delete movie file from iTunes

After converting movie file via Quicktime and adding it to the iTunes library, I am not able to remove it anymore. If you try to delete it, it crashes iTunes and after that all desktop icons are frozen. The movie does not play in iTunes, you cannot edit its info without crashing iTunes either. Movie plays in preview pane in Finder....
Is there any other way to remove the file from iTunes?

Try deleting the file without iTunes running.
When you next open iTunes it should then be marked as a missing file and you should be able to delete the entry from iTunes.
    Hope this works
