Removing CPU from 1.8ghz DP PCIX G5 Power mac.

What tools do I need? T10 & philips screw driver ? How many screws do I need to remove from each CPU/ heatsink unit.  Please help.

Thanks OCG, this is what i needed to hear!  I just didn't want to dive into this without some prior guidance.  My PM wont start up anymore, from looking at the crash log i've been led to believe that the 1st
CPU has failed.  I'm going to try and swap them over to see if i can get this machine to boot again.  I have DL the ASD dmg from the web so hopefully i can start bringing this back to life.  I've seen a few replacement CPU / heatsinks available on bay too so i will be buying one of those if it is a simple CPU failure.
Thanks again for your detailed help.
The one thing I noticed in prowling around was that on some machines, the Philips screws are replaced by 2.5 mm Hex head screws (I'm not sure whether people were actually referring to allen heads or hex heads, since lots of folks don't know exactly what they are talking about).
Also, when you make the initial swap, you should try the ASD, which may show the failed CPU.  In that event, until you get a replacement in, you can get by with disabling it in open firmware.  Boot into OF with cmd-option-O-F keys held down, then enter the following commands:
reset-nvram <enter>
setenv boot-args cpus=1 <enter>
reset-all <enter>
That will keep the machine from using the second CPU in line.
When you get the other CPU replaced, you can repeat the above without the setenv line and be back to baseline.

  • Upgrade from tiger to leopard on a power mac G?

can i upgrade from tiger to leopard on a power mac G5?

Yes, however, read about the pitfalls below.
Mac OS X 10.5 was release October 26, 2007.  Its 10.5.8 update is the newest operating system available for PowerPC Macs that meet its requirements.  It is available occasionally by calling Apple online store's phone number, even though the website does not show it.  Many want to upgrade to Leopard because of i-Devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod) bought saying iTunes 10 or later is recommended.  To check if that really is required, look at the i-Device requirements section of this tip
If your Mac is Intel, and running 10.4.11 or earlier, and meets the hardware requirements of 10.6, a less expensive upgrade solution is to upgrade to 10.6 directly.  No need to upgrade to 10.5 unless your software won't run in 10.6.
Software listed for Intel Mac and PowerPC Macs can run on 10.5 for the platform indicated in the link. For Leopard you need
867 Mhz on a single processor or faster (1 Ghz and higher are faster).
256 MB of RAM (preferably 512MB of more based on arbitrary experience).
9 GB of hard disk space (arbitrary experience adds another 15%) free.
Macs newer than August 28, 2009 can't run Leopard, and require a minimum of Snow Leopard.
Dual booting Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X 10.5, check this tip:https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757
Classic is not compatible with 10.5.  10.4.11 on a PowerPC Mac or earlier is needed for Classic.
Mac OS X 10.5 is the earliest version of Mac OS X that will run iTunes 10.  This is necessary for numerous i-Devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPods).  To find out which require it, see this article
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history
Should you require only iTunes 9, and are running a minimum of 10.4, backup your data at least twice, check in Apple menu -> About This Mac if you have a G3, G4, G5 (which is PowerPC), or Intel Core (which is Intel) make sure you are running 10.4.11 PowerPC or 10.4.11 Intel (depending on the aforementioned processors), and download iTunes 9.2.1.  The only reason you should upgrade to 10.5 is if some other software is required.
Boot Camp is only available on Intel Macs with 10.5 and higher.
Time Machine backup software first appeared in 10.5
You have several options of installation which are explained here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2209
All of which I recommend you backup your data at least twice before upgrading, and have sufficient disk space to install, and all your third party applications and drivers are known to be Leopard compatible, and after backing up your data you dismount and disconnect all but Apple keyboard and mouse and if there is an external display, that too. And just before you install repair permissions.
If any of the above terms confuse you, ask on the Discussions board what they mean, and one of the people who knows will gladly assist you.
You must use the installer disc that looks like *, and does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM, if you choose to upgrade to Leopard.

  • Remove CPU  from a RAC Server

    Hi,
Can any one please confirm, Does any impact on when we remove a CPU from a rac database server.
    Does it affect Database ?
    - Balaji

    No hardware platform
    No operating system
    No version number
No indication of the number of servers or their configuration
My temptation is to say I won't answer until you provide even the most modest amount of real information
So, in this specific case, I will say that I have done it without consequence but strongly advise you to post sufficient relevant information that you can get a more specific answer.
As to whether it has an impact on the database the answer is clearly no. As to whether it will have an impact on the instance, and your users, depends upon your current CPU utilization something else you didn't think important enough to mention.

  • Upgrade to 10.5 from 10.4.9 on a Power Mac G5?

I'm running Pro Tools|HD 7.4 in a 10.4.9 environment on a Power Mac G5 dual 2.3 GHz (The last Power Mac G5 ever released before Intel) with 4.5GB Ram and I was wondering if the upgrade to 10.5.4 would bring on better performance and stability or if I should stick with 10.4.9. Theres nothing wrong with my current configuration but if anyone thinks 10.5.4 would run better/smoother than 10.4.9 I think I would upgrade.

Leopard is definitely a better choice than Tiger. However, before upgrading, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone of your current Tiger installation before upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941

    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/backuprecovery.html
Once that's done, see these for info on the three installation options:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5666369
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5646414
BTW, if you decide to remain w/Tiger, update to 10.4.11. It's much better than 10.4.9.

It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.

  • Moving to a Power Mac from G5

We have 2 computers connected to an XServe RAID using Fibre Cards. We are replacing the G5 with a Power Mac that's about 1 year old. Will the Fibre card from the G5 work in the Power Mac? Or, do I need a different one? I don't understand the PCI-X or PCI-E stuff. Thanks.

    Hi
Surely you mean MacPro? Understanding PCI-X and PCI-E:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/howcanitedib.html
Although you could have googled this yourself? A lot depends which G5 it is? The earlier models supported PCI and PCI-X (1.6, 1.8, dual 1.8Ghz). The late 2004 model (1.8Ghz) only supported PCI. The late 2005 models (2.0, 2.3 and dual 2.5Ghz) supported 2, 4 and 8-lane PCI-Express. If the MacPro is a year old then it's probably the 8-core one? If it is it will support PCI-Express with bandwidth being system and user configurable.

  • How do I migrate from 2.8GHz C2D to i7 SSD and HHD

    Hi!
My new i7 Quad-Core iMac - 256 GB SSD /1TB Serial ATA - on Saturday. Using Migration Assistant to transfer the data from 2.8GHz C2D, I found that I was short 69GB of space; MA had fixed solely on the SSD. Googled the net for solutions. I decided to try Target Disk Mode. I was reassured to see that two hard drive icons appeared on the host screen: HD and HD2. HD is the SSD and HD2 is the Serial ATA.
Apple have installed the following six folders on the i7 HD/SSD drive: Applications, Home, Library, net, System and Users. My question is this: should I simply drag the similarly named folders on my C2D onto the i7 HD and HD2 icons, selecting, for instance, the Applications folder for the SSD and the Pictures/ Movies for the ATA? It this is OK, which Users /Library /System folders would be best suited to the SSD? I have a separate C2D folder for AppleWorks User Data; which drive should it be copied onto?
If the data has to be transferred in this way, won't there be two Applications folders, two Library folders, ... etc on the new computer?
    Regards,
    Declan.

I tried to disconnect everything from the motherboard including the backup battary, and then tried again after reconnecting everything to the motherboard with the old cpu, but the fsb is still locked to 133-233 instead of the 100-200. I guess something happened to the mainboard when I choosed load default values on startup when I tried with the new Pentium 4 2.8GHz Northood with 400 fsb and L2 cache of 512kb. I know that is supported as mentioned in this msi page http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=35&kind=1
I guess I have to try to find a new mainboard then, that fits my cpu, graphic card and memories. The graphic card is by the way a Geforce 4 5700LE with 256MB RAM if anyone has any suggestions.
...and no I can not flash the Bios since the system is not stable with the fsb at 133 instead of 100.

  • Remove U3Agent from Os X

    Hello-
I'm trying to clean up my iMac and diagnose some of it's lack of responsiveness.
Upon inspecting some of my active processes, I discovered the annoying SanDisk U3Agent near the top of my CPU list. I can't figure out how to remove this from my computer (I've found plenty of tutorials about removing it from USB drivers, but not my computer).
I quit the process using Activity Monitor, but it just restarts itself.
I check it's "Open Files and Ports" and when I browse to the directory the files are supposedly located, there's nothing there (/Library/Application Support/Sandisk/Cruzer/U3Agent)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    -Nate

    http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/826/related/1
Even this did not remove the process from Activity Monitor. So, I have to say it's an incomplete uninstall. And a complete dud for you, because your only mission is to remove it from your active processes.

  • Can I add a CPU from a dead G5 Xserve to another G5 XServe?

Can I add a CPU from a dead G5 Xserve to another G5 XServe? One XServe is alive and I can get the info from System Profiler, but the second will not start up. They are both labeled as 2.0 GHZ G5's. Do I just need to remove the one from the dead server and put it in the live one? Will the live one automatically detect the second processor and use it upon boot up? The dead one is S/N QP62217CSLX.

    Hi
You should be able to do this. I've done something similar in the past. Provided the part numbers are the same (check the EEE codes) you should be OK. The only one real way to find out is to try it?
As ever make sure you have a fallback position just in case. If this is a production server and if everything rests on it I would make doubly certain of your ground first.

  • I Have removed conduit from safari but it still has pop ups

So i have remove the application conduit and geniome from finder, but pop up still occur. I even changed and remove conduit from search and extension. I still get pop ups.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • I've had three laptops all connected to my itunes account, one was stolen, the other broke, how can I remove them from my itunes account?

So, in three years, after getting an iphone and an apple account I've had to replace a laptop twice due to theft or damage. When I link my phone to my new computer, it asks me if I want to connect the computer with the phone and I say yes, but you can only have 5 devices connected to one account, since one was stolen, and the other laptop broke, how do I remove them from my account??

  • How can we remove items from the VF04 list?

We have a long list of items in VF04 that, for various reasons (some process related, some due to errors), are not to be billed. We have looked at applying filters to the list but there is nothing really suitable to hide these individual documents e.g. we could filter out some dates where none of the items on that date are to be billed but other dates have a mix of items we want to bill and others we don't.
I have done a search of this forum but didn't find a previous topic with a quick and simple method to remove items from the list .
Is there a method, other than billing them or sorting each issue individually, to permanently remove individual documents from the VF04 list?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    David

    Hi,
    David,
Download a list of Pending delivers doc form VF04.
Paste the list in T.Code : VL09 (Delivery reversal) and reverse the delivery.
Then go to T.Code: VL06G Select the list of deliveries that has been reversed, select/delete all un- wanted deliveries.
This way you can remove all unwanted pending deliveries forn Billing due list (VF04).
    Thanks & Regards,
    R.Janakiraman

  • What steps do I take to give my husband my older IPAD w/o removing him from my Apple account?

I recently bought a new IPAD2.  All personal data and APPS were transferred from my older IPAD to my new one at the time of purchase. I'd like to give my older IPAD to my husband w/o removing him from my Apple acct.  Apple's support does not provide instructions for my situation.  Does anyone have suggestions as to what steps I should take?

What you might need to do depends upon how you want the old iPad to be for him.
If he will be using your iTunes account for any purchases/downloads from the store then he can continue to be logged in with your account in Settings > iTunes & App Stores. If not then log out of your account by tapping on your id in there, and he can then log in with his own account - any apps and other store downloads that you leave on the iPad will remain tied to your account, so only your account will potentially be able to redownload them and/or download updates to your apps.
To use his own account for Messages he can log out of your account via Settings > Messages > Send & Receive - tap on your id at the top of that screen and select 'sign out' on the popup. He can then log in with his account. Similarly for FaceTime : Settings > FaceTime (tap on your id on that screen). And (if he wants to back up his content to his own account) : Settings > iCloud > Sign Out
If you want to remove all content from the old iPad so that he can start afresh with it, then Settings > iCloud > Sign Out, and then Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
