Removing/Deleting files off my ibook

I recently uploaded too many files onto my ibook and now it will turn on properly, but will not make it past the loading screen. The blue bar fills up, but my desktop never appears. Someone suggested I use target disk mode to transfer the files onto another computer, but my firewire port has been broken for a long time, so I can't transfer anything. I have tried using single-user mode to delete the files manually, but I am unable to delete anything because all the files are set to "read-only". Is there any way to get rid of these files so I can use my laptop again? I am even willing to clear the hard drive entirely, if that's easier, because I have all of my most important files on an external hard drive. Thanks.

I don't have my system CD unfortunately, I'm currently very far home. Would it be easy to get another one?

How to delete files off of my hard drive if my computer won't boot up.

So, my hard drive is filled to capacity on my macbook air and the computer flashes a Message stating "Your startup disk is full." and from there it can't even finish booting up. Is there a way to delete files off the hard drive by using an external startup drive? Terminal? I have an external WD Passport hard drive that I've partitioned with one partition being a startup disk of with OS X 10.6.8. At this point the people at the store I bought it are only offering to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. I'd hate to lose all my pics and movies. Any suggestions?

If you have another Mac, you can plug it into your Mac, boot from that and try to access your internal hard drive from there and start dragging things off/emptying the trash. That is the only thing I can think of. If that does not work, you will have to erase.
Once you get this taken care of, remember: you should never fill your hard drive completely; the OS needs room to function properly and that would be an absolute minimum of 10 - 15 GB (more is much better) and, you should always have a current backup of everything. So, buy an external hard drive so you can make a backup as soon as you get the OS reinstalled.

Deleting Files off NTFS HDD problem

I have installed paragon on the mac to read and write on NTFS drives.. however, i'm having touble deleting files off my usb drive... when i delete, it goes to trash... then when i try to empty trash, it does not empty fully...
when i try to go to windows to delete the hidden .trash foler... it does not allow as well... please help

This is a problem with NTFS and Windows.
Basically OS X creates a lot of metadata for files/folders and is why the Finder works and looks the way it does.
The problem is OS X being unix hides most of these files using the '.' prefix. While this has no implication on the file system itself ie. NTFS has no problem with such naming conventions, Windows does.
There isn't a Windows API yet created that will allow for the creation of files with '.' prefixes. Basically if you are in a Windows environment, creating such files is impossible.
So why is this problematic, Windows doesn't know what to do when it encounters such files and it spits the dummy.
Paragon seems to be a similar implentation of the Windows API. You can forcefuly delete files on a Windows machine with the command line using some obscure -option when deleting.
Why not try MacFUSE with NTFS-3G it works great... just don't try and use it for anything tasking like, video editing. NTFS running on MacFUSE just isn't efficient enough.

How to delete previously deleted files off iphone PERMANENTLY from database

Someone I happen to know hacked my iPhone 4s. They took my iPhone when I left it out. They plugged it into their Macbook and used software I beleive called Wondershare Data Recovery, to raid my phone and go through confidential files I had previously deleted on my phone. They went through text messages, photos and files that were personally confidential to myself. They made it aware they did this because they personal told me they would continue "tracking" what I do on my phone because my files will be backed up onto their computer. I was also made aware that after I decided to put a password on my phone, the person told me "It doesnt matter if you put a password on the phone since my phone is now ENCRYPTED with the laptop".
My first question is how do I go about this situation. Is there a program i can use to fully erase all the "deleted" files i thought were deleted previously on my phone? Is there a data base i can PERMANENTLY delete my files from so they can never be acessed in a data base in the future?
How do I make sure i dont continue to get stalked by this "close friend" in the future?

Deleted Files off my external

I just bought a new laptop which is windows 8 so I put the files I wanted to keep off my old vista desktop onto a 1.5 TB Western Digital External Hard Drive
Well when i plugged the hard drive into my new laptop I opened it it took a couple seconds to load (which i figured okay first time plugged in) but then a new window opened Moving to recycling bin or something along those lines, I hit more info and it showed
nothing so i found the small x near the words and hit that.
While looking through my hard drive i noticed multiple different files were gone and some folders, so I unplugged the drive and went looking on the web for recovery programs and found a couple that showed many more files deleted than I previously knew videos,
pictures, and even game files from sims 3.
I have no idea why this happened and would like to know how to stop it from ever happening again, There were no viruses/malware or anything like that as I run scans to keep ahead of junk like that.
There was no confirmation or anything about deleting it just started doing it on its own.

I would like to confirm whether you used Vista to copy out the data onto your External HD.
Is there anything related to Windows 8? Here is the forum we discuss Windows 8/8.1 problem.
Please just make sure your operation is right, and try to find if there is any file really in the recycling bin.
For losing data issue, I truly recommend you to contact the Data recovery center for professional help.

Unable to remove deleted file

I created a smart list and there are three iTunes files that keep appearing because of the smart list setup.
When I try yo open it it says the original file cannot be found.
I did a search and it appears in my B/U hard drive under a secondary iTunes I created and it shows :
iTunes library.xml Word 2003 XML format ,
At the bottom it shows : iFiles> iTunes > itunes library xml.
The itunes library.xml. I do not know how to remove this as I no longer have it in my iTunes.
How can I remove it, when I open the itunes library.xml it cannot be edited.

On your RDCB server(s), please check if your deleted collections exist as subkeys under the following registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms
For example, say you had a collection named "My Test Collection". Under the above key you may have a key named My_Test_Collecti, within that a key named RemoteDesktops, then a key named My_Test_Collecti, and under that a REG_SZ value named
Name. The value of Name should be "My Test Collection" -- this is (or was) the display name for the collection.

Removing "Deleted" Files

Hello,
I have files in my main iTunes folder that are no longer in my iTunes library (i didn't realise that the "auto delete" setting has not been working properly).
Is there a simple way to delete them from my iTunes folder?

Isn't there a way to reset the default settings? I accidently selected that same option and now it doesn't delete the source file. If I delete a song off itunes I now have to remember what it was and find it in my itunes folders. This is a real pain. An reset recommendations?

Cannot delete file off desktop

I have, excel files on my desktop (labled with numbers and letters) that cannot be moved, deleted or even opened. I have no idea what they are. How do I get rid of them??

In an open Finder window, click "Application," select"Utilities," choose "Terminal" and double-click the "Terminal" application to launch it.
Type "sudo rm –f " (with a space after the f and not including the quotes) to delete a file.
Drag and drop the files you wish to delete onto the open Terminal window. The files you drop on the Terminal window will be deleted. You can drag and drop multiple files and folders onto the Terminal window.
Note using this u cant undo the action.

How to delete files off my external hard drive

I'm trying to clear up space on my external hard drive (Western Digital - My Passport), but it won't let me delete anything. In file, 'move to trash' is not highlighted, and when I click on get info, under 'sharing and permissions', it says 'you can only read'.

Is the drive formatted NTFS? Select the drive. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Ownership and Sharing panel make a snapshot of what is displayed - COMMAND-SHIFT-4 then select area using crosshairs. The image will be saved on your Dekstop. Then use the camera icon in the forum composition window's toolbar to put the image into your message.

Finding and Removing Deleted Files

I was looking through the actual iTunes folder on my drive and discovered that there are a whole lot of files that I thought I deleted from iTunes but that are still taking up space on my drive.
Is there anyway to get rid of these?

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

Getting files off ibook g3

i have a ibook g3 that powers on then i get the blue screen and spinning ball then nothing. i now have a brand new imac intel model. is it possible to get the files off the ibooks hard drive with it only partially starting up, to my imac any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Rather that putting or getting files from the server, how do
I delete them off of the server? I've been clicking on a file, then
right clicking and selecting delete, but does this actually remove
the file off of the server?
I've perused the internet and the help menu and can't find
the answer-is that because it's as obvious as what I am doing
already?

It does if you're using Remote View in the Files panel.

Can you recover deleted files which were stored on an external HD after emptying the trash on the Imac using Time Machine.

Hello - I had deleted files off of my external HD which I thought would not affect my Itunes library... Unfortunately I was incorrect in my assumption. Additionally, I empty the trash as I was hoping to regain storage space for the external HD. My question is, can i restore these files now that the trash has been emptied? I do have a regular back-up running on a Time Capsule, however when I chose the ext HD and enter into the time machine to restore it will not allow me to locate any files on the external HD??
Help!!!

Is Time Machine configured to backup the external disk drive?
It doesn't sound like it is. Which means that they is no way to get anything from that EDD from TM.
