Removing Desktop and Computer Icons in Finder Windows

I have 25 eMacs at a school and I want to remove the Desktop and Computer icons in the Finder so students cant access the Library or other folders.
I went under Finder Preferences and checked off HD, Computer, Desktop and others, but they still appear. I'm using Simple Finder with access to only My Applications, Documents and a Shared folder. That is all I want them to see or access.
Any ideas?? Thanks for the time and affort!!
Dave

If you only provide them access to the mentioned folders, then everything else is read-only. Although they may be able to see the files and folders they will not have access to them. That's the role of permissions.
As for displaying the HD, Computer, Desktop, etc. you need to disable those in each account.

  • Inconsistent and incorrect file icons in finder window list view

I have been seeing incorrect file icons in finder windows noteably for PDF files the last couple of weeks on my office MacMini running 10.5.8. Some just look messed up. Some switched and looked like Evernote files, but they open correctly in the default application - Preview.
Get info would show the same incorrect icon, but correctly show Preview as the default application.
Just now I tried clicking on CoverFlow view and when I went back to List view, the icons looked correct again.
What type of system maintenance if any is needed to correct this issue? Note, these files continue to display correctly on my home iMac where these files are synced.

    Thanks for the reply Baltwo.
I followed your directions. After the restart the PDF icons were all displayed correctly.
However, some .doc file icons were blank. Selected one, got info, set it to open with MSWord and then clicked "apply to all." Most, but not all now display the Word logo. Some remain blank, although get info reveals they are set to open with Word. Will another restart fix this or is there another suggestion?
I will be away from this computer till Monday.

  • Document icon in Finder window differs from Get Info icon

I've been noticing unexpected document icons in Finder windows for quite some time.
This is especially true for PDF files. Since the early days of Mac OS X, I've configured my Macs to open PDF files in Adobe Reader, and I'm accustomed to seeing an Adobe PDF document icon on each PDF file. For some time, I've been seeing different PDF icons, e.g., a document with fuzzy text lines and a black ring binding on the left edge.
I thought this might be a custom icon. But when I do a Get Info on the PDF file, the conventional Adobe PDF icon appears in the Get Info window.
Is this different between the Finder icon and the Get Info icon a bug or a feature?
    -- Ward

It's a feature. Any window that has the View Options set to "Show Icon Preview" will do that. It actually is rather handy in a folder that is set to icon view, with nice BIG icons, you can often see the first page (which is what is displayed) clearly enough to recognize exactly what the file is. In List view it isn't at all helpful, nor is it helpful in those cases where you have icon view set, but the icons are quite small (as is the case on my Desktop, and, I suspect, on most people's Desktops). A pdf that has multiple pages will additionally show the "binder" along the left edge. The Finder is drawing these custom icons on the fly from the contents of the file. The only way to defeat it is to turn of the Show Icon Preview for the folder(s) where you don't want an essentially useless and often counter-productive icon. Do that from the Finder's View menu item, Show View Options. Oh, and every folder has different options for each view. So you can turn it off for List view, but have it turned on for icon view, where it might actually be useful.

  • I want to stylise a finder window on a CD-ROM... that is, when a CD data disc I've created is inserted into the Mac and double-clicked, the finder window has the layout and background I've chosen. Is there any Apple software which will do this?

I've created a CD-ROM which essentially has a website on it.
I've added an autorun for PC users (assuming those guys still exist) which launches "index.html". So no worries there.
For Mac users, as autolaunch isn't an option (correct me if I'm wrong?), I want to control the look and layout of the Finder window which opens when the disc is inserted and the CD icon is double-clicked. What's the best Apple software to use to do this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Nice to hear your story.

Third-party NTFS software interferes with the Apple NTFS drivers, which control whether you can see the Bootcamp partition in the Startup Disk option. As a test, can you uninstall all third-party NTFS software and check System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

  • How to print the files and folders in a finder window?

A long time ago...There used to be a way to print all the files and folders in a finder window. I haven't been able to do so in a very long time. Is it one of those things no one else needed so they eliminated it? If not, can someone tell me how to do it?

    Or use the scripts here:
    /Library/Scripts/Printing\ Scripts
build the droplet in AppleScript Editor, and drag the folder on to the droplet.

how can u change the desktop and taskbar to a classic windows view in 8.1

    Hi,
If you mean to customize the desktop, you can use themes, desktop backgrounds, window colors, and screen savers to personalize your desktop.
If you want some free themes and desktop backgrounds to use, there are lots to choose from in the
    Personalization Gallery.

The operating system for the iPod, album art, databases, etc. all make up the "other stuff". Think of it as all the backstage things required to make your ipod work.

  • Removing icons from Finder window sidebar after 10.6.7

Not a major calamity, but since upgrading to 10.6.7 I don't seem to be able to drag icons off the Finder window sidebar to remove them. In earlier versions of SL they would disappear in a small puff of smoke.
Right-clicking and contextual menu command does work though to delete the icons. Two machines - 24" and 27" iMacs, no exotic third-party software.
Curious if anybody else has seen this or if there's a fix?

Use command-drag, changed in latest update credit to I forget who.

  • Windows 7, when adobe downloaded and installed all desktop and taskbar icons become adobe icons, why

Windows 7 operating system, when Adobe downloaded and installed all desktop and task bar icons have the Adobe icon and will not open, why does this happen?

to answer your questions, i)  tried installing both
    ii) Tried 9 and 10
    iii)  Free version of both
    iv)  No!
I turned off the anti virus but the same thing happened, I'm getting tired of downloading and then having to uninstall Adobe.  There must be an answer, something on the computer is not right.  I had problems with a CD drive my computer stopped reading it,   Replaced the CD burner and it still would not read, took it to be repaired and was a faulty registry which the guy at the shop fixed but the problem with adobe is only since I had the computer fixed last week or is this just a coincidence?

  • Removing Shortcut Icons from Finder Window

In the left side of the Finder Window, there are little shortcut icons like "Music" and "Applications" and the like. I dragged a folder into this window for easy access. I no longer have the folder on my Mac, but the shortcut icon is still there.
How do I make it go away? Every time I right- or left-click on it, I simply get a message saying the folder is no longer available.

Select the item and drag it out of the sidebar. It will "poof" away.

  • Help - lost icons in finder window

Hi, Somehow i lost some icons, and i can't get them back. When I click on the HD icon, i get the finder window. Listed are: network, MacHD - a line, then: Desktop, User Icon, Applications, Pictures, and Favorites. I almost positive I also had a Music and Utilities icon in there. Last night i had some problems with my mouse and several times heard and saw the famous "cloud" and "swoosh disappear sound". After, I had fewer icons in the finder. Can someone verify the icons that should be there, and how do I get them back?
    Thanks...

Here is what Mac Help has to say about sidebar items:
To customize the list of basic sidebar items, choose Finder > Preferences and click Sidebar. Select the checkbox next to items you want to show.
To add a personal item, drag it to the lower part of the sidebar. You cannot add items to the upper section.
To remove an item, drag its icon out of the sidebar.
Drag items up or down in the sidebar to organize them.
To change the width of the sidebar, drag the divider bar beside it. You can show just the icons or hide it completely.
To eject a disk or disconnect from a volume, click the eject icon next to the item in the upper part of the sidebar.
So, you should be able to drag items of your choice into the sidebar.

  • Desktop (and other icons) change after Skype updat...

When I updated Skype to version 7.5 yesterday, some of my desktop and taskbar (also Start Menu) icons immediately disappeared, only to be replaced with standard Windows icons. This involved mostly Microsoft and Adobe programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, but also Google Earth and QuickTime Player.
I carried out a Icon cache rebuild, but this did not restore the original icons, resulting instead in standard .exe icons or blank (i.e. white) icons. When I tried to change the icon for these programs, I got messages similar to this one (for Adobe Reader):
    Windows cannot find file %SystemRoot%\Installer{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}\SC_Reader.ico.
Since then I've tried several system restores, and while these have always restored my icons, Skype then no longer works. I've also uninstalled Skype (which was a battle in itself!) and reinstalled the latest version, but the icon problem has returned. The generic icons DO open the programs without problems, but I cannot easily distinguish between the various Microsoft Office applications and Adobe programs.
As things currently stand, I can have either a working Skype or my desktop (taskbar etc.) icons, but not both. There must be some way around this. I am sure that Windows Installer is in some way involved, but can't undertand how updating or deleting Skype could affect it.

The issue is still related to the Windows installer.   If you keep Windows up-to-date it should resolve any Windows installer issues with updates that came out after Aug 2014 (unless this a new Windows update issue).  A Windows update at that time create a similar issue due to upgrading the Windows Installer then resolved them in later patches.   The only way to notice the issue was to install any programs that utilized the Windows installer (like Skype).  Some people uninstalled the update but it was a temporary fix (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2918614).  So either the issue you are having is related to that Windows update or possibly a newer one.
You can try this in case it helps but it's generally for normal shortcuts.
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html
If that doesn't help the only way to repair registered shortcuts automatically is to perform a repair install of the applications that are affected (via add/remove programs or programs and features in the control panel).  This will restore the individual package to icon association that broke.  Again these advertised shortcuts are tied to the Windows installer and registry.  When you create a shortcut to the exe of a program (like msword.exe) it won't have this type of problem and will still display the normal shortcut even if you don't perform a repair of the application.  If you still want to repair the issue a repair install would be best.
The latest version for download from Skype is still 7.5.x.102
    Skype 7.5 (exe version)
