Removing .ds store files

I just played with mainmenu, a maintenance utility...and pushed the button "remove .ds store files". It has been deleting these files for the last few minutes.
What consequences will that have?
Jurgen

.DS_Store is a hidden file created by the OS X operating system to store custom attributes of a folder such as the position of icons or the choice of a background image.
If you delete these files, you will lose this information. The only time to delete them is if you know the files will be used on a Windows system.

  • How do I remove an entry from the "Store Files" drop down list in the "Import Settings" section of Aperture 3.3.2

The dropdown list "Store Files" in the "Import Settings" section of Aperture 3.3.2 displays the history of the entries previously added to the list. Some of the entries are no longer valid and I'm trying to delete them but I can't find a way to do this. This is a screenshot. Does anyone know how to do this?

Once again - the Jive system ate my bullet points and messed up the formatting
Is the MacOS X version in your signature correct? Then you cannot be using Aperture 3.3.2?
You should not be seeing duplicate entries in the "Store Files" pop-up menu. This looks like your Aperture Preferences file is corrupted and needs fixing.
Quit Aperture (and log off and on again, if you are running MacOS X 10.7 or later)
Then reveal your User Library (from the Finder's main menu bar, the "Go" menu. Hold down the options-key until the library apears in the drop-down menu)
In the Library folder select the "Preferences folder and locate the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist"
    Now you can either
remove the com.apple.Aperture.plist file to the Desktop, to force Aperture to create a new one, but you will have to set again your Preferences from the "Preferences" panel,
or make a backup copy of the file and edit it, if you are an experienced programmer and have Xcode installed. To fix the drop-down list you need to edit the item "RecentReferenceFolders" and delete the redundant folder names. Enter "recent" into the search field to find it quickly. If you click an item in the list, plus/minus buttons should appear. But only try this, if you know how to edit property lists, otherwise it will be much safer to delete the faulty list and to set your preferences again from the "Preferences" panel.

  • How do I remove an old file from the Finder Favorites list?

    Good Afternoon.
I have a shiney new MBPro with 10.7.1.
On my old machine running Snow Leopard, I had two .xls files I used often that I had dragged to the left side into the favorites. The truth is, I hadn't used them in months, but hadn't bothered to remove them. Then about ten days ago, the Bad Thing happened, and I had to replace my laptop rather suddenly. The nice folks at the Apple store transferred all the data and I was off an running in just a few hours.
Now, I thought to myself, I should remove those two files since I don't use them any more. But how?
If I click on them nothing happens. If I right-click on them, nothing happens. I can't drag them out because they don't drag and they aren't listed on the list of favorites that can be toggled on and off in preferences.
I checked. The files did still exist but deleting them didn't remove their names from the favorites list.
Any suggestions as to how to remove these two .xls files from the Finder's Favorites list?
    Thanks. A picture is below.

The msot amazing person ,just posted an answer to my other question which worked here too.
    Three cheers for Kappy!
Just hold down the CMD key and drag them off. How simple is that?? They didn't klnow this at the Genius bar when I asked this morning. I am amazed.
I wish I knew how to send Kappy cookies.

  • Growl & Notification Center conflict on Firefox: how do I remove growl ghost files?

    Hi everyone,
I'm exeperiecing un unpleasent issue with Firefox. Not working appearing in Notification Center!!!!!
    - I have the latest version of Firefox, so I'm sure it's supported.
    - I had Growl 1.2, which is the most updated version of the "non-App store" version of the software.
    - Never bothered to buy the super expensive version for the App Store.
    - I removed all the software in Growl preferences so that they would appear in Notification center instead, and that worked fine, except for Firefox.
    - I also uninstalled Growl, and checked the website for instructions on removing every single file (http://growl.info/documentation/growl-package-removal.php#1.2easy). But that didn't work either.
    - Firefox seems to keep generating some files when I start a download in order to run growl, so even if I erase them they still show up the the Library.
    - I tried reinstalling Firefox, didn't work.
    - Tried reinstalling Growl 1.2, but Mountain Lion won't allow it, so I can't even reinstall it and run the uninstaller later.
What on earth am I supposed to do?
    I hope someone outhere knows.
    thank you

You want to Hide the app in the App Store (as seventy one suggested). This will stop you from recieving notifications about updates.
In Mountain Lion, fnd the app in Purchases. Right click on it, and choose "Hide Purchase..."

  • ERR:10003 Unexpected data store file exists for new data store

Our TimesTen application crashes and then it can not connect TimesTen datastore, and then we use ttIsql and get error "10003 Unexpected data store file exists for new data store".So we must rebuild the DataStore.
I guess the application damages the datastore because we use "direct-linked" mode. Is it true?
Should I use "Client-Server" mode if our data is very important?
    thx!

Your question raises several important discussion points:
It is possible (though very unlikely in practice) for a C or C++ program operating in direct mode to damage the contents of the datastore e.g. by writing through an invalid memory pointer. In the 11+ years that TimesTen has existed as a commercial product we have so far never seen any support case where this was diagnosed as the cause of a problem. However, it is definitely a theoretical possibility and rigorous program testing and use of tools such as Purify is strongly recommended when developing in C or C++ in direct mode. Java programs running in direct mode are completely 'safe' unless they invoke non-Java code via JNI when a similar risk is present.
The reality is that most customers who use TimesTen in very high performance mission critical applications use mainly direct mode...
Note also that an application crashing should not cause any damage or corruption to a datastore, even if it is using direct mode, as Times%Ten contains explicit mechanisms to guard against this.
Your specific problem (error 10003) is nothing to do with the datastore being damaged. This error reflects a discrepancy between the instance main daemon's metedata about all the datastores that it is managing and the reality. This error occurs when the main daemon does not know about a datastore and yet when it comes to connect to (and hence create) the datastore it finds that checkpoint or log files already exist. The main daemon's metadata is managed solely by the main daemon and is completely separate from the datastore and datastore files (the default location is <tt_instance_install_directory>/info, though you can change this at install time). The ususal cause of this is that someone has been manually manipulating files within that directory (which of course you should never do) and has removed or renamed the .DBI file corresponding to the datastore.
This error should never arise under normal circumstances and certainly not just because some application has crashed.
Rather than simply switching to the (much slower) client/server mode I think we should try and understand why this error is occurring. Could you please post the following:
    1. Output of ttVersion command
and then we can take it from there.
    Thanks, Chris

  • Pavilion dv6-3120sa. Error: 0x000024. Windows BCD store file contains some invalid information.

    Pavilion dv6-3120sa. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit.
PC boots into Windows and everything runs OK but I've lost the ability to launch Startup Repair.
I wanted to create a new partition and move personal files for three users to it so the C: drive is for OS and programs only. I hoped to assign the drive letter 'D' to the new partition.
As 4 primary partitions already exist, I had to make an extended partition and moved an existing partition to it. I removed the drive letters from the Recovery and HP_Tools partitions and assigned the new partition 'D'.
Fearing I'd done wrong, I found Recovery would not work then read the Recovery partition must remain as 'D' and tried to put things back as they were.
Partitions are now as follows: Primary partitons: System, OS on 'C', HP_Tools no drive letter plus a lot of unallocated space. Extended partition with Recovery as 'D'.
When I restart and press ESC then F11 and choose 'Launch Startup Repair' I get the message "The Windows Boot Configuration Data BCG store file contains some invalid information".
I explored with Bootrec and BCDEdit.
I've identified the 'ResumeObject' GUID but shied away from doing anything with it.
    Description: Windows Recovery Environment
    Status: 0x0000024
Info: The configuration for an element within the object is invalid in the Boot Configuration Data store.
I do not want to do anything that might affect the PC as it is working just fine, but would like to get 'Recovery' working properly.
When I restart, press ESC then F2 System Diagnostics, it takes me to HP_Tools OK as I can see and use the menu of items so it seems that partiotn is functioning.
I had made a Recovery CD and used it with the Bootrec and BCDEdit commands but am unsure what to do next as I don't want to make the situation worse by using the wrong command.
Please can you tell me what to edit and how?

Moving the Recovery partition to the extended partition is not going to work. I really don't understand why you are moving personal files to another partition and still expecting to use Recovery anyway when needed because it will wipe out the partition with personal files. Best to use external USB HDD for file storage.

  • How do i use my time capsule as a network to store files, etc.?

How do i use my time capsule as a network to store files, etc.?

There is no difference in setup..
Only trouble.. be warned this is quite problematic. With Mavericks even more so.
    See Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Take particular note. The TC is not a NAS or file server.. it can be pressed into use as one.. but will suffer..
    1. Slow spin up of the disk and fast spin down. Causing streaming and library issues with itunes.
    2. iphoto is easily corrupted.. don't move it to a network drive at all.
    3. no backup.. the TC cannot back itself up.. it is designed as a backup target for Time Machine. but Time Machine cannot backup network drives.. and nor did apple build in a backup.. it was never needed. After all it is a backup.. not a file store.
    4. you cannot partition it. You will have issues with TM if you do store both data and TM backups on it.
    5. You can use USB drive plugged into the TC, and experience a new definition of pain and suffering.. well slow file transfer anyway.
    Good luck.

First, I would recommend repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility.
If that doesn't fix the problem, there's a very dangerous command you can execute in the Terminal.  This is very hazardous, because a simple typo can result in very drastic consequences.  I have seen people erase their entire hard drive by putting a space in the wrong place!  So, please follow the directions I'm going to give you very carefully!
Open the Terminal, which is found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.  In the Terminal, enter the following:
    sudo rm -f
Make sure to put a space after the "-f"!  Then, drag the troublesome file from the Finder and drop it on the Terminal window.  That should insert the path to the file in the command.  Then go back to the Terminal and press return.  You will be asked for your password, and when you type it, nothing will be shown as a security measure.  Press return again after entering your password.  The file should be deleted.

  • Can I remove a SPECIFIC file from the "Recents" list?

As far as I can see, Adobe Reader for Android has only the option of clearing ALL the files in the "Recents" list. It doesn't have the option of removing a specific file from the "Recents" list.
Maybe I'm just missing the option I'm talking about or Adobe Reader doesn't really have that feature.
Sensible answers to my question will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi iSTULIN
I assume you can delete the complete list, not the single file ...

It is working properly. using p_file like rlgraph-filename i have taken the parameter and function module filename_f4 uploaed file.
Now i when i am runing the report it is inserting properly in foreground. But  i have requirement that i have to run the report in background but it is giving error in background. So what i do is the excel sheet which i take as input should be stored in Application server and then i have to pick up the file from application server during the background process. Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • Using Time Capsule to store Files

Can I partition Time Capsule to use like a hardrive to store files such as photos and media, or does Time Capsule just function as a backup drive?

How would I go about this?
Once the connection to the Time Capsule is established, look for its icon in the My Computer window and use it as if it was a regular drive. You may need to use the AirPort software for it to show up; this is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

  • How do I remove "All My Files" icons from the toolbar?

    Good Afternoon:
I have A shiny new 15" MBPro that came preinstalled with Lion that I have updated to 10.7.1.
If I open a finder window, there are two "All My Files" icons on either side of the toolbar. I asked a Genius about it and they said they had never seen that. I can remove "All My Files" from the list of Favorites on the left easily enough. I can open up the window to customize the ToolBar, but in that window there are no "All My Files" icons available to add or delete.
How do I remove the "All My Files" icons from the toolbar?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Below is a screenshot of the problem.

Sort of surprised they didn't know. I'm lost as to why that even appeared on your computer unless you had put them there yourself which, clearly, you didn't if it was brand new out of the box.
    Glad it's sorted out.
