Removing dupes in iPhoto

I"ve had a look through other questions about this issue, but I'm still a little unclear about this.  I've never re-imported my iphoto library and the pictures I tend to import are synced directly from my iPhone 4.  I do keep around 300 images on my phone, but obviously want to back up new ones each time I sync.  When prompted by iPhoto, I always select not to re-import duplicates, yet it seems to keep importing particular images so that they show up several times in the iPhoto library window (which is the only one I work in).  Also, if I scroll back through, I've noticed that there are dupes of other images and video clips I've backed up previously which are no longer on my phone.
What is the best way to proceed?  I'm reluctant to purchase and run external software such as Duplicate Annihilator until I know what the problem is.  It seems there is a problem during the sync, which is duplicating existing images and video clips, but I'm not sure which are physical and which are logical or exactly what to do with each.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

First Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos, take a couple more and import again and check to see if the same problem persists. If the problem goes away with the new library then your library is the culprit.
In that case make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed
by #3 and then #4 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    I used Duplicate Annihilator to isolate dups in iPhoto on my iMac. At the end of its search, it told me it had marked the word duplicate in the comments / description field. How do I find and delete the marked photos?

    File -> New Smart Album
    Description -> contains -> Duplicate
    will find them.
    Then the keystroke to delete depends on which version of iPhoto you have. All the keyboard shortcuts are under the Help menu.

    Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?

  • Please help me come up with a game plan to consolidate libraries and remove dupes.

    Hi all.
    I've been using Aperture since the 1.0 version.  I'm now using the latest 3.3.2 version.  I've been very sloppy in my organization and as a result I have several different libraries with dupes scattered around between all of them.  I just got a new rMBP (love it) and would like to finally get everything organized.  I have about 1TB combined of pictures (many dupes).
    I was thinking ultimately I would like to to have 1 library with just pictures from the most recent year in order to keep the library performance fast and then keep all the other pics in a seperate library that I will only access occarsionally.  So......I'm thinking I first need to combine all the libraries into 1 and then remove dupes?  Once I get everything in 1 library what would be the best way to remove them?  I've seen several apps that remove dupes but don't know if any of them work well or not.
    Would I be better off exporting all of the pics out of the aperture libraries into 1 folder and then using some software to remove them there? (I would be OK losing any adjustments if I could just get a set of masters with no dupes.  Then I could just import all of the masters into a brand new library.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Sorry, would love to go into fine detail about this but I'm a little tired and frustrated at this point.
    I'm basically having the same problem as robosapien. I just want to create this simple configuration :-
    AirPort Extreme Base Station (main) <--> AirPort Express (relay) <--> Airport Express (remote)
    In following various instruction manuals, common sense and logical experimentation I'm simply failing to get it to work. I've assigned MAC addresses, configured manually and with the set-up assistants but I'm begining to feel that the "multiple" configuration adjustments that happen when setting up a WDS network are somehow cancelling things out.
    Here are a few things that are confusing me.
    1) It appears I have set things up correctly in a single room environment with MAC addresses in the "right" boxes, main/relay/remote WDS settings assigned correctly and green lights on the 2 Express units. I then move Express 1 (relay) to another room and retain green light status. I then move Express 2 (remote) to it's intended location - another building, but with only 2 walls and 25ft between Express's - but I only get the flashing orange LED. I return to Express 1 and that too is flashing orange, as if Express 2 has messed up it's function when it was powered up. The network has fallen down.
    2) When experimenting with configuring each station I don't understand why a single remote base station is in a mode classed as "Create a Wireless Network" as opposed to "Join an existing Wireless Network", but that second option disables access to WDS settings, so I'll hazard a guess that is used for bridging.
    I'm sure it's probably all about the order in which you set up the base stations
    and which base station holds which MAC addresses, but I've exhausted the logical combinations.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I remove duplicates in iphoto?

    How do I remove duplicates in iphoto?

    Whenever I move a photo into  an Album and the same photo already exists there, the second p;hoto is accepted without warning.
    These are not duplicates.
    Photos in Albums simply reference the pictures in the Library. A Photo can be in as many Albums as you like without using any extra disk space,a nd it can be used in an Album as many times as you like. There is no duplication involved here.
    At heart, an Album is simply an instruction to iPhoto: Show this bunch of photos together in this order.

  • Remove duplicates in Iphoto

    How do I remove duplicates in Iphoto?

    I'm going to use this thread to ask a slightly related question, if that's ok..
    I'm  trying to get rid of duplicate IPhoto libraries (on various external hard drives).
    I opened the one I want to keep , and then looked (in Finder) at each of the other libraries and dragged any photos or folders that seemed not to be in the Iphoto library I'm keeping, INTO that library .
    I then moved into the TRASH all of those extra Iphoto libraries.   I did not yet empty the trash, because  my fear is that Iphoto doesn't actually have those photos there, and that once I empty trash, those photos will be gone.
    I'm sure i'm confusing things I've read about the risks of incorrectly deleting photos, so I just want some reassurance that what I did will work out and I won't find that the photos were deleted when I deleted the iphoto library I dragged them from.
    thanks!!

  • Can't remove video from iPhoto/iMovie'11

    Help! I have an old video that shows up everytime I start iMovie'11, and I don't seem to be able to get rid of it. It shows up under the iPhoto video Library, but it doesn't show up at all in iPhoto so I am unable to delete it.
    I managed to locate it in the Finder, it seems to have 2 .jpgs associated with it in the iPhoto Library Thumbnails and Preview directories, and two video files: one in the Masters directory and one in the Thumbnails.
    Is there any way to delete it without resorting to the deleting these files from the Finder? It's over an hour long so I'd really like to be able to delete it.

    Since no one on this discussion forum was able to offer help, I turned to Twitter and received an answer there.
    In case anyone else with this problem stumbles upon this thread, I will share the solution that worked for me:
    The answer was that the video in question was in the iPhoto Trash. Once I emptied the Trash from the left-hand sidebar in iPhoto, the video was removed from both iPhoto and iMovie.

  • IPhoto, moving photo's to my document folder, and remove thumbnails from iphoto.

    iPhoto, moving photo's to my document folder, and remove thumbnails from iphoto.
    How to? Please...I cut and paste items, it is removed from iphoto for a few seconds then they appear again.

    The photos that are appearing on the mini - are they photos taken with an iPhone or iPad? If so, open System Preferences on both computers and select the iCloud tab. On the mini, click the Photos checkmark off and on the MBP click the Photos checkmark on (if it isn't already), then start iPhoto and select Preferences. Select the Photo Stream tab and make sure Photo Stream is on.

  • Removing dups from list

    Hello
    i am removing dups from a list by overwriting the equals method of the class. The equals method is checking for only one attribute...but i want to have another list with different elements from the list (another attribute)
    class C has two main attributes, Color and Size. I want to have a list with different colors and another list with different sizes.
    class C equals method:
    public boolean equals(Object obj) {
         C drt = (C) obj;
         boolean bRet;
         if (drt.getColor().equals(this.getColor()) {
              bRet = true;
         else {
              bRet = false;
         return bRet;
    }adding to list A
    ListIterator li  = B.listIterator();
    while (li.hasNext())
    C celement = (C) li.next();
    if (!A.equals(celement))
       A.add(celement);
    }at this point list A consists of different (by color) celements. But what if i want to have another list to have different (by size) celements...?

    The obvious way of getting a collection of distinct things is to use a Set. However you can't have multiple "equals()" methods. There is no inbuilt "Equivalator" analogous to a Comparator.
    At the moment you are comparing a list with an element which can't be good.
    One way or another you have to compare each thing with the list so far to see if it should be added. Maybe something like:import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.List;
    public class Thing {
        private String color;
        private String size;
        public Thing(String color, String size) {
            this.color = color;
            this.size = size;
        public String getColor() {
            return color;
        public String getSize() {
            return size;
        public String toString() {
            return "[" + color + "," + size + "]";
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            List<Thing> theThings = new ArrayList<Thing>();
            theThings.add(new Thing("a", "1"));
            theThings.add(new Thing("b", "1"));
            theThings.add(new Thing("a", "2"));
            theThings.add(new Thing("b", "2"));
            theThings.add(new Thing("c", "3"));
            theThings.add(new Thing("d", "1"));
            List<Thing> colorList = new ArrayList<Thing>();
            List<Thing> sizeList = new ArrayList<Thing>();
            for(Thing thing :theThings) {
                    // look for a color match
                boolean found = false;
                for(Thing test :colorList) {
                    if(test.getColor().equals(thing.getColor())) {
                        found = true;
                        break;
                if(!found) colorList.add(thing);
                    // look for a size match
                found = false;
                for(Thing test :sizeList) {
                    if(test.getSize().equals(thing.getSize())) {
                        found = true;
                        break;
                if(!found) sizeList.add(thing);
            System.out.println("Color list: " + colorList);
            System.out.println("Size list: " + sizeList);
    }

  • Help removing a corrupt Iphoto library

    Hi All
    I am posting this here as i don't think its a iPhoto specific issue, rather a corrupt file issue
    I was hoping some one can provide wisdom in removing a corrupt iPhoto Library
    The file suggests it is 500Gig in size, and no matter what i try i can't delete it
    What i have tried
    Deleting it through the trash can - system just hangs
    Deleting using OmniDiskSweeper, using this app it suggests the file size is 11Gig, but when you ask it to trash it again just hangs
    Running disk verify and repair to see if that would resolve the problem
    Repair the file by holding down Command and Option while opening in iPhoto - it brought up an error message and would not let me proceed
    I have even tried deleting using Terminal with no success, however in saying that i am a beginner using this launguage
    At the moment my Mac thinks its occupying 50% of my hard drive space, i know it not that size, but i am at my wits end
    I would be grateful if any one could help me solve this problem
    Note i am running the latest software, and i no longer require this file

  • Removing Images from iPhoto

    I don't know how to remove images from iPhoto 8 or 6. I prefer to use PhotoShop Elements and I want to move the iPhoto images from wherever they are into a separdate folder so that I can put them into Bridge CS3 and use Elements. But I cannot figure a way to do this. Thanks.

    Terence
    I purchased the Duplicate Annihilator that you recommended and with about an hour it had detected almost 5,000 duplicates, so I went ahead and identified them, also did the thumbs and found about 300 there, so I put them in the trash and deleted all that came up and now I am down to 5,000 - pictures. I will run it again tomorrow
    Thank you for your help, and a bargain to boot, I must tell my Mac store about this!
    Very much appreciated.... the reason that I hesitated to bring over the old iPhoto is that a few months back a bunch of my pictures from there 'disappeared' -so I didn't want to import a corrupt application?
    Happy trails

  • Remove faces from iPhoto

    Hi.
    Does anyone know if it's possible to remove 'Faces" from iPhoto 11 (9.2.1)? If so, how can I do it?
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    A poster called lopezio claims the following will do the job:
    This is how you can disable (turn off) Face detection, without deleting faces found so far (just in case you want to restart processing at another time):
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Open Terminal Application (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
    3. Type the following (exactly as is):
    defaults write com.apple.iPhoto PKFaceDetectionEnabled 0
    (then return)
    4. - Start iPhoto - Faces stops getting on your nerves...
    If you ever need to re-enable faces, just do the same again and replace the 0 with 1.
    I've not tested this so I'd offer a significant warning to back up first and even if it does work then to be wary if you're updating or upgrading as it may have an impact there too.
    What definitely works, and safely, is to upgrade to Aperture as that has an option to disable faces. Pay more get more options.

  • Finding and removing duplicates in iPhoto?

    I've accidentally re-imported about 200 photos into iPhoto (all with the same file names) and I'm trying to build an Automator workflow to remove the duplicates without success. Anyone have any himts on how to do it? I can't find appropriate actions.
    Also anyone know of other useful iPhoto workflows especially any that automate adding keywords?

    Its iPhoto 6 and while they are in different rolls (I must have failed to use the check box at some time), its not as easy as deleting the whole roll as it appears they have slightly different contents hence the desire to compare and delete dupes.
    Dealing with such a large number of dupes its difficult scrolling up and down to identify the right files to delete.
    Thanks for your reply.
    edit: reading around it seems this isn't all that easy in iPhotoand the 2 apps I've found that offer to do this each have drawbacks.
