Removing dust and scratches?

I just had some of my parents' old home movies digitized (homemoviedepot.com) to Digital8 format, and as I write this I'm importing them into iMovie. Eventually they'll have a soundtrack applied and it'll move into iDVD.
However, since some of these movies are more than 45 years old there's a fair amount of dust and scratches and such from them. Home Movie Depot did a fantastic job at converting them to digital format (far better than the old VHS transfer that my sister had done ~12 years ago) but there's still room for improvement -- not only with the dust and scratches but also with color restoration.
What's the fastest/best/easiest way to clean this up? Is there a "De-Age Film" iMovie plugin somewhere that'll get me started?

every tried to accomplish that with a still?
Yes, all the time. But the rules regarding a still are quite different from the rules regarding video.
how should the software know, what is dust, what is grain?
By comparing median values of the previous and following frames. Mathematically speaking, it's actually pretty darned easy to figure out if there's dust in a video frame or not. All you have to do is compare color and texture values from one or more preceeding and proceeding frames. If there's "blue" in a given range of ten frames, then there's "black" in a frame, then "blue" in the next ten frames, odds are that "black" section is dust. Have the computer interpolite the color and texture values for that region based on the frames immediately before and after it.
geethree.com offers in Slick9 some more elaborated hue & stauration adjustments then iM does....
Yes, I already have that and will be experimenting with it eventually. I would like to remove the dust and such before playing with color, however.
isn't it wonderful, to see with a blink of an eye, that "recording" ist 45 years old? let it be old....
This is just a matter of opinion. IMO, removing excessive dust and debris from the frame is not robbing the film of its age. I'm not colorizing a b&w film; I'm restoring the color that was lost to age.
I mean, you could go even further back with that argument. Doesn't converting the film to a "sterile" DVD and watching it on a TV screen rob the film of its "old-time charm" of setting up a projector and video screen?
IMO, this is exactly the sort of thing that iMovie was made to do.

  • Dust and Scratch Removal PSE 6 3rd Party Programs ?

I've currently got PSE 3.0, going to upgrade to PSE 6.0, but also looking for even better Dust and Scratch Removal than PSE 6.
    Any suggestions ?
    [email protected]

Yes, "Dust and Scratches" does work on PSE5. I've used this filter on the two pictures at: http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/cooper213/dustscratch.jpg
On the left is the original of a scan of a 40s snapshot. On the right is that image with one pass of the Dust and Scratches filter.
You can't just apply D&S without some experimenting with the Radius and Threshold. The higher the R & T, the more the noise is removed, but the more the image is blurred. I used a very low figure for both Radius and Threshold. I would not stop here with the editing process.
I'd use the Healing Brush tool to remove some of the remaining noise on the black coat. I'd do some sharpening, and possibly sharpen only the figures by creating a Selection so the clapboards on the house don't start to look wonky.

  • Problem using Dust and Scratches filter in Photoshop CS6

Using the 64-bit extended CS6 version under Win 8/64.  Am I not using the filter correctly, or is this a limitation regarding its use?
I duplicate a layer and apply the filter.  I then add a white mask and invert it to get black.  I change the layer blending mode to either darken or lighten, depending on the requirements at hand.  I use the paint brush to remove the spotting and it works.  However, if I add a new layer and then go back to the Dust and Scratches layer, the paint brush further modify the layer.  I need to create a new layer and start all over again.
I am finding that if I convert the layer for smart filter use, I cannot use the paint brush.  The layer needs to be rasterized, again.
    Thanks,
    Steve

I am painting with a white brush - onto a black mask.  The purpose is to only apply the Dust and Scratches filter to specific areas.
The brushing will apply the filtered effects when I create the layer, apply the filter, and apply the black mask.  The brushing no longer works if I create a new layer and then return to the layer with the Dust and Scratches filter.  The problem is similar, I think, to if one were applying an effect with the history brush, close the file, and reopen it.  The history brush won't be helpful because the history is lost..  In this case of applying the filter to a layer with a mask, the history brush isn't used and I would have guessed that the layer would allow re-use of the filter and brush.

  • Handling dust and scratches in Aperture

    Hi all,
I have been looking for some kind of tool within Aperture that might be able to help dealing with dust and scratches on scanned film.
For dust spots, the spot and patch tool seems to help, but for scratches and other fine blemishes that take the form of lines instead of circles, the spot and patch tool does not seem to be able to handle it.
Another thing that doesn't seem to be supported is the case where two blemishes are very close together.
Is there another tool inside Aperture that I should be using?
A round trip to photoshop unfortunately blows away any advantage you get by using the raw workflow.
Is there something obvious that I am missing?
    Regards,
    Graham

No -- Aperture's spot and patch tools work on round things. You can't clone a big long scratch out of something like you can with Photoshop in using the clone tool.
No real way around that -- Aperture is a photo editor not a pixel editor (they're quite different things under the hood). You'll need to round trip to Photoshop for these kinds of things (hence the 4x or 5x file size increase you get... from using a pixel editor . I wouldn't say this "blows away" all of Aperture's advantages, but yes if you're retouching a few hundred old scratched photos it will be a pain. But Aperture's core strength is in workflow for shooting with a digital camera and sorting, keywording, and doing light to medium editing. It's not going to compete with Photoshop for heavy retouch work or stuff often started from scanning negatives.

  • PSE10 Dust and Scratch filter eliminates the correction achieved when I click OK

PSE10 using Windows 7 64bit system.  When I use the Dust and Scratch filter, I can see the improvement in the photo (or the inset) , but when I click OK, it goes back to the way it was.  This happens whether I use "Preview" or not.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Quit the editor, then restart it from the button in the organizer or welcome screen, or by double clicking the actual .exe file. However you do it, hold down ctrl+shift+alt as you start it. Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Dust and Scratches filter stopped working

beginning yesterday, when I select an area of a photo and attempt to use the 'dust and scratches' filter, Elements 11 jumps to the 'Hand Tool' and locks up.  This is on a Windows 8 machine.  Any ideas?

When PSE gets weird, the first thing is always to reset the preferences. Go to the editor preferences>general and click this button, then restart the editor:

  • Cleaning and scratch removal

I recently got a white macbook, its been great but im starting to notice black spots on the palm rest and scratches on the top.Is there any product that would help me get rid of these blemishes?
I would really appreciate if someone could help me out
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Hey i have two macbook, white one is almost a year old. it have MANY scratches in the bottom and the top, i uses brasso for the top and the bottom, but it doesnt do much, it does help some heavy scratches like scuff but it also created more light swirl scratches thats visible when u see it straight from bright light. U can try icleaner to remove a heavy scratches if u have any.
And for the palm rest, try a small amount of toothpaste and rub it in the dark black spot in ur palm rest, or u can try magic eraser which work great! just damp the magic eraser with slight water and rub it evenly to the black area in ur palmrest and dry it with dry cloth.

  • How can i remove dust from the inside of my iMac ?

    Good Morning (?)
Recently moved and there was a fair amount of dust in the new place, some of which has collected around the fan. Is there away to clean the dust that I would guess has migrated to the inside of the computer?
    Early '09 IMac.
    Thank you
    Brian

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET

    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Is there a way to remove (or hide) scratches in my iPhone 5?

    Hi, everybody!
Is there a way or product to remove (or hide) scratches in the back/sides of my black iPhone 5? Although I protect it with covers, it's more and more scratched...

I don't text that much and most of the people I do text with have iPhones and iMessage. I refuse to pay for unlimited texting, which is the only plan available. I just tell people to text through Facebook, etc. if they do not have an iPhone. Thanks for the replies.

  • Best way to remove dust from a MacPro

what is the best way to clean the inside of a Macpro. When I go inside to remove or update components there is considerable dust. In the past I have grounded my self and gently wipe some of the areas with a light cloth to remove dust. There are areas on the mother board I would like to clean off also would canned air be ok.
    Thank you
    Dick

Computer and electronics safe to use:
    Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 0.75-HP Electric Duster 120-Volt
    www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW/
My guess though is any thing that was loose or can be loosened (cable connection somewhere?) can be, would be the only thing to watch out for. Less on Mac Pro than on my PCs with fans and clips for power or an SATA cable that could slide off.
I don't know what mac model you have but DIMMs do have a tendency like any electronic part to attract and hold onto dust.
The old G5s were notorious for how much dust could build up down inside those systems and get empacked. And somehow still work but not as well.
If you see temperature sensors that don't look normal, or the fans seem to be working when you aren't doing anything, that would then be a reason to take action. Otherwise, not sure if more harm than needed good.

  • Dust and debris in the Macbook Pro speakers

I've noticed that there is a small buildup of dust and debris inside the small holes of my Macbook Pro speakers. Can anyone recommend any ways of cleaning this debris out, such as removing the top cover, or using a suction device? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Either blow out the dirt with a can of compressed air (but not too close), or use a small vacuum cleaner designed for computer use (anti static). I wouldn't remove the top cover unless you are certain you'll put it back exactly as it was so as not to void the warranty.

  • Better than dust n scratches

Hello, can you please give me a hint on how to get rif of dust that is visible when making very high quality scans? Iam aware of the "dust n scratches" filter but im not very happy with its outcome results, it kinda degrades quality and yes i know one cannot have it all but maybe there is some other way to do it more effienltly.
Here is a zoom of the situation  http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/840/screenshot20111221at709.png/  as you can see these dust are big

I use it a lot when scanning my 10+ years old slides, and rarely need to do much spotting.

  • How to remove dust within the touchpad on Satellite U920T

I have a U920T, using only the touchpad, combined with the touchscreen.
But the touchpad got dirty, with some dust inside.
It is quite annoying on a daily use.
I could not clean it with a vacuum cleaner, nor by blowing air with a bike pump.
Does somebody knows a way to remove dust from within the touchpad?
    Thank you
    LT

Sorry for being out for some days.
Yes indeed, the touchpad is not closed, there is a gap between the plate
and the case of the computer. (I have taken a picture to explain the problem.)
No, there is no way to paste a picture or attach a file on this forum!
I have been able to improve the situation by blowing air, but it does not last.
Using a vacuum cleaner could not do much better.
I have asked the question to Toshiba, but without any answer yet.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do you remove itunes and everything saved to windows through itunes?

i want to completely delete all of the information thay has been saved to my laptop through itunes such as apps, music contacts, actually i want to remove everthing, and start from scratch with new apple ID and password for all the apple services?

When I run the iTunes installer now, it hangs\freezes when it gets to "Registering modules."
hmmmmm. by any chance do you have SpyCatcher (or the version of GhostSurf platinum that contains SpyCatcher) on that PC?
if so, try uninstalling SpyCatcher altogether prior to the itunes install. if it goes through properly this time, launch itunes at least once prior to reinstalling SpyCatcher.
    see:
iTunes 7 or later for Windows Installation stops responding while "registering modules"
