Removing extension from master socket?

Hi all,
Over the past month I've been having noise problems with my broadband.  Engineer visited today and isolated it as the extension running from the master socket to upstairs feeding noise back so fitted an adsl splitter faceplace.  All lovely, full speed broadband so very happy.  Then about an hour later router disconnected and when it reconnected back to old speed with high noise.
I could live without the extension which is years old (an old BT install complete with 2 ringer sockets installed before we moved in), but cannot remove it as it's connected to the rear of the master socket.  My idea is to snip the extension near the master socket and cap the wire.  Just wondering if this is this a feasible course of action?!

Did the engineer mention a charge for the visit? as you could be liable as the fault was proven to your own wiring.

  • Can't remove faceplate on master socket

One of the screws on my BT master socket faceplate just spins and spins and won't unscrew, so although I can unscrew one side the other side is still attached. I can pull it abut 1mm away from the backplate but that's it. If I pull hard then the backplate starts to flex away from the wall. I've tried screwing clockwise and anticlockwise, waggling the faceplate about but it won't unscrew.
This isn't a problem right now but I'm sure one day I'll need to access the test socket behind there.
Has this ever happenned to anyone before? Any tips on removing it? I obviously don't want to damage anything.

Hello and thanks for the tips. What doesn't help is that the socket is only a couple of inches off floor level.
The only bit of the backplate I can see is underneath the socket. I stuck a flat blade screwdriver in here which parted the faceplate from the backplate by about 1mm but that was it. On the sides of the box if I stick a flat blade screwdriver and turn it then it just pushes the backplate away from the wall. I've also tried sticking a screwdriver in the gap between the 2 sections of the front of the socket but again with no joy - DS, is this where you mean in your 1st post? Apply pressure here then try to unscrew?
What I can't understand is if the brass insert is just spinning around inside the plastic moulding, why wont it just pull out? Or is the brass insert 'encased' in the plastic?
Yes, that bit (between front plate and back plate)
And yes, it is encased, so brute force may help it (and probably break this little piece of plastic)

  • Cannot remove extensions from dreamweaver

I am trying to update an extension from Dreamweaver cs6, first I need to uninstall the older version. I keep getting an error saying I do not have appropriate permissions to do it. I am running the program on windows 7. I am logged onto windows as an administrator, I am running adobe extension manager as an administrator. what do I need to do?

One sure way is to exit Dreamweaver to then rename the configuration folder (in case you need it again) to configuration-backup or similar.
The folder can be found at
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS6\en_US\
After the renaming, restart Dreamweaver and reinstall the required extensions.

  • Master Socket - Modem - Hub/Router cabling

BT sales (and I tried to get through to their technical support) have unfortunately not been able to answer the question. Due to the layout I will need to lay the data extension cable from master socket to modem up the wall and under the floorboards upstairs, which the engineer will not do. Please can somebody confirm the below are the correct cables : 1. Master Socket <----- RJ11 male to RJ11 male ethernet cable (6 pin, 4 connectors) -----> Openreach Modem 2. Openreach Modem <---- RJ45 male to RJ45 male ethernet cable -----> Hub/Router

If you do go for Webby's suggestion on the Homeplugs get the 200Mbps type or faster.

  • Extra master socket ?

I upgraded to Infinity 2 last month.
My master socket was the old style without the removal front cover so I had originally used one of the 'doubl plugs' to connect to it and bring out the connection to a junction box which I then distributed around the house to sockets in every room.
When I got ADSL I removed all the unnecessary extra wiring and used a normal socket in my sitting room to connect to the router.  I did tests and the difference in speed between connecting the router direct to the master socket and using WiFi was minimal and preferred the convenience of having it located near where the PC was normally.
A contractor did the Infinity 2 upgrade, I explained my wiring and suggested putting the master socket in the sitting room on the end of my wiring so the router would be near the PC and YouView box.
He fitted the new style master socket in the sitting room by desk as suggested but left the old master socket in circuit and claimed it would not affect the speed.
It was only after he left I realised that this meant I still had the horrible double adaptor in circuit so it was not hardwired all the way and the double adaptor is falling apart anyway.
I am wondering about just removing the old master socket and putting in another terminal block to connect the incoming pair to my internal wiring to the proper master socket.
Just kicking my self that I did not insist the contractor did a proper job!

Can't see why your suggestion would not work. Just try it - if it doesn't work put it back as it was.

  • Master socket conversion from plug in extension ki...

Hi! can anybody advise whether an extension socket kit installed by myself which simply plugs into the existing master socket (i.e. not wired in the back) can still be converted and used as the new master socket. I have the same problem it seems as many others with the current master socket nowhere near my computer.

Yes it should be able to, as long as its extending the master socket to another place (Basically yes?)
You can also ask the openreach engineer to run you a new master socket to where this extension goes. Basically they'll just run a cable where your extension cable goes, and then put a new OpenReach mastersocket there, so you wont even need your extension kit
I know BT are weird about only working on their own sockets, so this might be your only option, but the engineer should be more than happy to do it.
He'll just need to get some drop cable and just make the current master socket into a dud socket, and then put a new master socket elsewhere. (It'll be one of those unsightly Non sunken faceplates though, e.g with a backplate sticking out of the wall) so you may need to sink it into the wall yourself if its something that bothers you (Although the fact that you had an extension kit running along, i doubt it will bother you.
Is this what you mean? Or have i totally misunderstood you?

  • How to connect Master socket and extension to fibr...

I have just had my fttp service enabled.
I watched the online video on how to connect my phone, and it says that if you don't have the special socket that allows you to switch from copper to fibre, you should just connect the phne to the modem.
I don't have the socket, just a normal phone socket right next to the modem.
How do I connect my extensions? Can I just connect my modem to the socket and go from there, or do I need to do anything else?
Sorry folks, I know very little about this stuff!

    There is a guide here.
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/37138/related/1
My guess is that you would have to disconnect your extension wiring from the old master socket, and plug it into the Tel 1 socket via a phone splitter, if you need a phone near the fibre modem.
There are a few other FTTP users on this forum, who may be able to give you more advice.

  • Query re hard wired extension from double master s...

I have a double master socket - old LJ5/1A type. From this is a hard wired extension. From this extension's socket I have run a "plug in" extension upstairs to a filtered ADSL and phone faceplate. I am experiencing very slow download speeds and I am wondering if my "extension to extension" is the wrong type of set up. Without taking the double socket master faceplate apart, which I am reluctant to do, I do not know if there is a bell wire anywhere in my set up causing interference. Any advice would be appreciated please.

Ooops sorry. Misunderstood. Good idea, but I don't know whether or not that will work in my set up. I understand they work due to the properties of the ring main. Problem is in my case, I have one ring main downstairs and a separate ring main upstairs., (two miniature circuit breakers in the consumer unit). Do you know if they would work on two separate ring mains?
    Updated reply:
Went onto site where these devices are sold. Apparently they can be used on two separate ring mains.
"Would HomePlugs work on different mains circuits (rings) in my house ?
There is mis-information about this subject on the web - the answer is Yes - limitations are as follows - the rings or circuits (such as upstairs and downstairs) mains must be on the same fuse box / consumer box. - if you have other configurations just call and we will do our best to advise."

  • How to remove the date extensions from a filename in SSIS Flat File Connection Manager dynamically at run time

    Hello,
I have to load data from a csv file to SQL Database. The file is placed into a directory by another program but the file name being same, has different extensions based on time of the day that it is placed in the directory. Since I know the file name
ahead of time, so, I want to strip off the date/time extension from the file name so that I can load the file using Flat File Connection Manager. I am trying to use 'variable' and 'expression editor' so that I can specify the file name dynamically. But I
don't know how to write it correctly. I have a variable 'FileLocation' that holds the folder location where the file will be placed. The file for example:  MyFileName201410231230  (MyFileName always the same, but the date/time will be different)
    Thanks,
    jkrish

I don't want to use ForEach Loop because the files are placed by a FTP process 3 times a day at a specific time, for ex. at 10 AM, 12 PM and 3 PM. These times are pretty much fixed. The file name is same but the extension will have this day time stamp. I
have to load each file only once for a particular reason, meaning I don't want to load the ones I already loaded. I am planning on setting up the SSIS process to load at 10:05, 12:05 and 3:05 daily. The files will be piling up in the folder. As it comes,
I load them. At some point in time, I can remove the old ones so that they won't take up space in the server.  In fact, I don't have to keep the old ones at all since they are saved in a different folder anyways. I can ask the FTP process to
remove the previous one when the new one arrives. So, at any point in time, there will be one file, but that file will have different extensions every time.
I am thinking of removing the extensions before I load every time. If the file name is 'MyFileNamexxxxxxx.csv', then I want to change it to 'MyFileName.csv' and load it.
    Thanks,
    jkrish
You WILL need to use it eventually because you need to iterate over each file.
Renaming is unnecessary as one way or another you will need to put a processed file away.
And having the file with the original extension intact will also help you troubleshoot.

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
#You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
#To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
#Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.

    Hello Wontsey & Welcome
On 6-4-06 I installed Norton Internet Security 3.0.1 for Mac. I thought maybe my problem was related to the firewall part so I unistalled it and turned the Apple firewall that came with the computer back on.
This did not help. In fact, when I try to open “Help” from the desktop menu the program opens and then immediately closes so I can’t access it.
I hate to have to tell you this Norton is the problem, looking into uninstalling it, the uninstallers that came with it are not effective so no matter you do not have the CD/DVD go to their site to get the Uninstaller
UseCocktail or OnyXto find the invisable files. Just follow Macjacks directive.
This is covered in this Topic thread, abandoning Norton Internet Security see the files Macjack speaks of in the topic thread. If you have questions post in the same forum a new topic this thread is archive, click on the link and then click"back to topic list". This is why i first came to Apple discussions, to get help with the mess Norton can make on Panther and found help as you will. It is not a Safari issue per say, rather a Norton problem.
    Best of luck.

I use internode and imap. When the ipad deletes emails it also removes them from the mac. How can I reverse this so the mac is the master and the ipad is the slave?

Thanks for the info. - I now know that deletion works both ways!! - (unlike POP where emails deleted from the ipad also deleted them from the mac even before I could read them,  whereas emails deleted from the mac were not removed from the ipad!!! - ie. the ipad was the master over the mac - the slave).  Prior to changing to imap I used to transfer all nongarbage emails from inbox to mailboxes before my husband could ask if he could delete emails on his ipad. I have noticed however if you do this in imap, they are removed from the inbox on the ipad as well (this did not happen with POP). So we still have to check but the number is less so we like imap better than POP.
    Thank again

Are you trying to reduce the visual clutter on the phone, save space on the phone, or limit the security exposure if your phone is stolen?
If you are only wanting to reduce the visual clutter and make scrolling through the list faster, you could set up a group on the computer containing only the contacts you want to see on my phone (called, for example, "Show on my Phone") and enable only that group inside Contacts on the phone. You might even have one or more existing groups that you could enable that way (maybe "Family" and "Personal").
