Removing external display, what is right way to wake up the internal?

I tried connecting to an external display (an HP L1955) via a DVI cable, closed the MBP, and was able to get the HP display working at its native 1280 x 1024. But then I wanted to go back to the internal display, so I disconnected the cable, but then found I couldn't wake the MBP. I hit the F7 a couple of times, moused down a couple of times, and finally it woke, but what's the correct procedure to go back to the internal display.
I guess it's different when running mirrored or extended, that is, using both displays -- I presume I just disconnect it and all is fine. (question though is what happens to windows on the extended display if I disconnect it -- are they off screen and not retrievable?)
Also, one nice thing about this display is that it has both VGA and DVI inputs, and their independent. I have a winbox connected via VGA, and I can switch between the inputs with a push of a button. Kinda cool to see that happen...

To use your MacBook with an external monitor with the MacBook display closed, you need to connect a USB keyboard and mouse. The User's Guide recommends turning on the external display first before connecting to the MBP, then it will automatically detect the display. Pressing F7 switches between mirroring or full-screen mode. After putting the MBP to sleep by closing the lid, wait a few seconds before pressing a key on the external keyboard to wake the MBP and use the external display.
I do not have my MacBook Pro yet and I don't use an external display (tried it before just playing around). I would wake the Mac before disconnecting the external display though.

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

  • How tow connect two external displays that are not mirrored and turn of the retina display

    Hello,
    I have two questions:
    1.  Is it possible to use two external displays either mirrored or not and turn off the retina display, and if so how it is done?
    2.  Is it possible to close the MBP and use an external keyboard while using two external displays?
I am using a music production DAW Persons Studio One-2 Pro and it would be great to be able to have this type of a setup.
    Thank You,

    Macbook Pro  15" Retina display I7 2,3mz 500gb SSD late 2013  OSX Yosemite 10.10.1

    Hi Breezinabout,
The MacBook Pro Late 2013 retina display model will support two external displays. See this specifications page for reference -
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) - Technical Specifications
    Specifically -
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colors
    And -
    Thunderbolt digital video output
    Native Mini DisplayPort output
DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    HDMI video output
Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz
You would, if you wish, turn off the internal display by closing the MacBook Pro, which is called "closed-clamshell" mode. It requires you to have an external keyboard and mouse. See this article for further information -
How to use your Mac notebook computer in closed-clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display - Apple Support

  • Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

Read https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5043762?start=0&tstart=0 to discover you can't do it.

  • Got the new MacPro & two 20" displays-what is proper way to hook dual dis

What is the best way to hook up the dual displays????? Don't want to mess anything up on this system
    Thanks

Although the FireWire cable is only used for the display's ports, the USB cable is also used for display identification and brightness control. If the USB cable is disconnected, the wrong color profiles may be used and the computer will not be able to adjust the brightness.

  • Widescreen External Display - What happens?

My daughter wants an external display for her iBook G4 and has noticed that most on the shelves are widescreen. Since she's likely to upgrade to a MacBook or MacBook Pro before too long, she'd like to buy a widescreen monitor.
But I'm not sure what will happen hooking an iBook, which has the older, squarer, aspect ratio, up to a widescreen monitor (or what a "widescreen" MacBook will do when hooked to a standard "square" monitor, for that matter.)
I'd be grateful if someone can shed light on these questions.
    Thanks!
    Greg

You can enable dual screen mode (please note this is un approved by Apple, and will Void your warranty)
paste the following into a plain text, Textedit document and save it as .command, then double click it
    #!/bin/sh
    echo Enabling iBook dualhead mode...
echo "You may have to enter your password"
    sudo nvram nvramrc='" /" select-dev
    00000000 " graphic-options" get-my-property 2drop !
    unselect
    sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=true
    echo done.
After that it will reset, and enable dual screen mode,
to reset it to normal use at terminal:
    sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
On dual screen mode, the max the Ati can support is 1600x1200 at 75 hz and million of colors. And will use wide screen without trouble.
Hope it can be of of assistance.

If you installed OS X Mountain Lion (per your signature) to your external drive, you should be able to restart your Mac Mini while pressing/holding the Option/Alt key and selecting the Recovery HD - 10.8.5 in the startup manager. This boots you into the external drive's Recovery System (different than Internet Recovery). From the OS X Utilities Menu, you can use Disk Utility to "clone" both your external Macintosh HD and its Recovery HD to your internal drive.
First, back up your internal drive unless you don't need anything on it.
Restart your Mac Mini into the Recovery System on the external drive using the Option/Alt key and selecting the external drive's Recovery HD.
Select Disk Utility and erase your internal drive's Macintosh HD.
Stay in Disk Utility and select your Macintosh HD on your external drive.
Click the Restore tab. Your external drive's Macintosh HD should be displayed in the Source field.
Click and drag your internal drive's Macintosh HD to the Destination field. Note: This partition needs to be the same size as or greater than the Source.
Click the Restore button. This will block-copy the external drive to your internal drive.
After the restore completes, both your internal and external drive will be labeled the same (e.g. Macintosh HD).
Quit Disk Utility and at the OS X Utilities menu, click on the Apple logo (upper left corner) and select Startup Disk. Select your internal drive and Restart. This will restart your Mac Mini using your internal drive.
    Good luck

  • How do I boot from an external hard drive if my MacBook Pro only recognizes the internal drive?

Hi there, I recently got the white screen of death (w/ circle slash) on my 13" 2009 MacBook Pro. Most people are saying that it is hard drive failure, so I am trying to boot it from an external hard drive to save some of my data before having it repaired. Unfortunately, every time I press "option" while it boots, it only shows the internal drive on the grey screen. I have my external drive connected, but it won't recognize it. What should I do?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can only start from an external drive if OS X is installed there. If not, it won't appear as a bootable volume because there isn't any operating system inside it.
As you have a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro, it's better to start from the Mac OS X disc that came with your Mac. Insert it and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. After starting, go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and repair it. If you can't get it repaired, take the computer to an Apple Store.
If the hard drive can't be repaired, the only option to recover your files is to use an application as DiskWarrior, but it's expensive and it's not sure that it will work, because it may fail

  • I want to install Yosemite onto an external hard drive, and keep Snow Leopard installed on the internal hard drive. I want to be able to boot from either system, depending upon circumstance (at least until Yosemite is stable). Is this possible?

iMac, Model Identifier iMac12,1 with 121.5" screen, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory, 1 TB internal hard drive, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from internal drive.

  • External displays - is there a factory default setup for the PB?

I plugged in my 32inch DVI equipped TV into my PB. Everything was was fine until I decided to play with the settings - I switched the primary monitors around, tried different resolutions etc. And now my TV claims that it's incompatible with the fed signal and my laptop doesn't "see" the mouse so I can't switch resolutions back. Any ideas how to get it to work? I tried to reset the display to factory settings but it didn't help.

Hi, tenant. In addition to a brody's suggestion for resetting the Powerbook's display, you may also need to reset the TV by disconnecting it from everything else, unplugging its AC power cord, and letting it sit that way for a while before reconnnecting things. Or there may be some other reset procedure described in the TV set's manual.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

I need to finish putting CDs into my iTunes library.  The drive on here just spits out my CDs now.

"Apple even makes one but it's $79 which is kind of pricy."
And is the same one that used to be inside iMacs. It is cheap and not very good and prone to the same type of premature failures.
