Removing files from my iMac

Hi Guys/Girls,
Its more than likely a simple solution, but I can't get my head around it.
Unfortunatley its come to the time to retire my Intel iMac 2007 to replace it with a Windows laptop.
Not by choice, but I spend a lot of time at work & a laptop now suits better than the desktop.
Moving to a PC rather than macbook air, only because of cost. I cannot justify to the wife & kids spending £800 on the apple when a Windows machine will set me back £300.
So to my question.
I currently have about 5,000 photos located in iPhoto, which I need moving to my new laptop (Win) when it arrives.
At the moment I have a 500gb external hard drive which I use as a time machine.
I want to wipe the external HDD & then put on the photos, but it needs to be readable by my new Windows laptop.
There must be a way to do it, I just want to get it right first time.

Since iPhoto maintains all of the photos in a database on the Mac, you are going to have to export all of the photos from the library to straight files. Then depending on what you are going to use for storing your photos on the Windows PC you will have to impart the photo to that product.
I would not do anything with the external disk drive (EDD)with your Time Machine backups until after you know that your migration to the Windows PC has been completed. You never know when that important files that you absolutely must have will crop up.
When you get your Windows PC get an EDD for it and format it as exFAT. Then connect the EDD to the Mac and copy the exported photos to the EDD. From there you should be able to import them to the software you will use on the Windows PC.

sorry I have taken so long to get back to you, but to be honest I am feeling a bit out of my depth with this, the more I read the safemac info the more I become anxious that if I do start to try and follow the advice given and make a wrong move I will be deeper in the mire, I can't afford to render my imac unusable, and am beginning to wonder if I should just put up with Geneio but just don't use safari by way of a compromise, I have been using Firefox instead and it seems to be fine if I do this, but if I use safai the Geneio newsaper style home page comes up, so I just don't go down that route any more at the moment, as I mentioned in my original post I am not very well versed in the imac at the moment I am still very much feeling my way, however I did follow your advice part of the way, by looking in Finder -Get info and it came up with this info on the last file update I have on Adobe Flash and this is it, I hope this is what you were looking for

Does AirDrop remove files from the source computer?

I want to copy files from my iMac to my new MacBook Air. If I use Airdrop will it just copy the files or remove them from my iMac?

Dropbox has a copy of the file on each computer sharing the same Dropbox account, plus a copy on the DropBox server.
There are 3rd party utilities besides DropBox that can do similar things, but DropBox does make it simple and painless.

Mackeeper opens every time I click on anything on the internet.
Sometimes Mackeeper tells me to call a support number, the screen is frozen and only switching the power off resolves the issue.
Have deleted Mackeeper from 'Applications' but Mackeeper remains.

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

That error message is misleading. Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

You can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner. It will clone your HD to the external. The format is the same as your internal drive and you can boot from it using Option key at boot time.

Everything works fine, excepting that when I attempt to open Photoshop 6, I am prompted for the serial number. I enter the serial number provided by Adobe, which I have confirmed with my "previous purchase" records kept by Adobe. It is demanding a "qualifying product", all of which is contained in the complete files I transferred. Why can't Adobe recognise my valid serial number for Photoshop 6?

Are you really talking about Photoshop 6 or about Photoshop CS6?

Removing files from a dead powerbook drive

I need to remove files from a dead powerbook which has motherboard failure. Does not boot up so Target mode will not work. Is there another way to do this?
Do they make drive dock connectors for this?

You could remove the drive and use a drive adapter. Many places make drive adapters.

I am having a problem moving files from an imac in one location to an imac inanother location. I have tried using Dropbox which is installed in both locations but when i drad a file ino yhe app it becomes an alias. When I get to the other location it says I can't open the file because the " original application that created it is not present". This is despite the fact that the app that created both files is installed in both computers. If I use the Public folder in the idisc, when I get to the other location the file isn't there. Am I forgetting to turn something on or off? Should I manually sync the Public folder and if so how? Thanks

Format the memory stick as "fat" then copy the files to it.
