Removing icon on top right corner of my iMac

Hi,
I would like to remove some icons on the Task Bar at the right top corner of my iMac (running OSX 10.8.2) - see attached picture. I try to drag the icon to the Trash can but that did not work. Can someone suggest a solution? Thanks!

Good morning, folks! I hope someone is still 'monitoring' this thread...I, too, have an icon on the right side of my taskbar that I cannot get rid of.
About a year ago, I had to leave my iMac behind becasue I took a temproary job 1100 miles away..so I installed Go to my PC so I could link up with the Mac with my McBook AIr if I needed some files, etc. When I returned home, I uninstalled Go to my PC because I did not need it anymore. Problem is, its icon still lives in my taskbar.
After 'extensive' searching the net, mostly Mac forums, this is what I have tried so far...all with no success.
1) CTRL-dragging does not work. It's a third party icon, so this technique fails.
2) Went into System Preferences, Users and Groups, and did not see anything related to this program under Log In items to disable.
3) I then went into Activity Monitor, Disk Activity, checked ON ALL Processes, and lo and behold, there was a file pertaining to Go to my PC. I clicked on it, highlighted it, and clicked on Quit. A force Quit box came up, I answered Yes, clicked on it, and the icon disappeared!
4) I restarted my Mac, and the icon re-appeared. I tracked down that particular file again using Activity Monitor, but there isn't a way (that I know of) to DELETE that file from the Activity monitor. I can Force Quit it all day, but the icon re-appears after every fresh start up.
I sure would like to get rid of this icon....and no, there aren't any options under it, when highlighted, that gives me any means of disabling it. I even tried to use Spotlight to track down the files I found in teh Activity Monitor but it came up empty; so did a search within Finder for that particular file on my Mac. Struck out again! ;-)
Do any of you have any ideas of what else I can do to get rid of this icon? It does have over 8 megs of memory attributed to it (or at least that what Activity Monitor tells me), and although that isn't a lot, this Mac is reaching 3 years old and it needs every bit of memory I can currently have on it. ;-)
TIA for any advice you may have on this subject!
Cheers!
Pat
PS- I am running the latest version of Mountain Lion, BTW.  10.8.2

  • Wierd Symbols/Icons in top right corner

I have a wierd symbol that looks like a phone with what looks like a keyboard underneath it in the top right corner of my phone near the battery status. What does this mean and how do I get rid of it! I think it could possibly have something to do with hearing impaired settings but i could be way off!

    It's TTY
Choose Settings > Phone to turn TTY on or off.
Use the below link for all icons for future reference

  • Downloads "Pile" Icons in Top-Right Corner of Screen

Almost every time I download something from the web--software updates, photos, etc.--none of it restricted--all my desktop icons fly into the top right-hand corner of the screen and pile on top of each other.
I then have to drag them one-by-one back to the position they were in on the desktop.
It's becoming a major pain and I can't figure out why it's happening.
Has anyone experienced this? If you have and know how to fix it, please let me know. I can't find anything about it in the knowledge base.
    Thanx.

My proposed solution to Jane is a *workaround, it does work for me on my Powerbook 10.4.7.
It also works on the mac intel they scramble, same os. 10.4.7
I removed the com.apple. finder.plist from the home~/Library/preferences folderon the powerbook did a restart, if I deselect the Arrange by in " Show view Options' under the "View" menu again the files scramble all around the desktop, having to manually rearrange them.
Do you know which other.plist file it maybe ?
On the iMac os 10.3.9 they behave w/out selecting the arrange, therefore, as far as I see it is a good way to arrange them, as a workaround.
    workaround
    n. 1. A temporary kluge used to bypass, mask, or otherwise avoid a bug or misfeature in some system. Theoretically, workarounds are always replaced by fixes; in practice, customers often find themselves living with workarounds
    for long periods of time.
Hello Dimaxum ~ I also have a Downloads folder, which i prefer to have all downloads go to so I can "get info" before I open them, I think it is an good idea. I do however have many other files on my desktop for easy access. Thanks for the support.

  • IPod Touch shows play icon in top right corner even when not playing

    Hi,
Has anyone had the bug where their Touch displays the 'play' icon even though it is not currently playing any music? Mine does this intermittently, and apparently for no reason.
    Thanks,
    Alex

Was going to start a new topic on this, er, topic but found this thread in a discussion search. I find it kind of annoying - I am constantly checking to make sure nothing's playing to avoid running the battery down. Not a big thing, but ideally they'll fix it in a future update.

  • Shift icon in the top right corner of screen? Help please

Hey everybody, I have a question here. I've been getting a random problem on my curve 9310, and was wondering if anyone else had the problem or knows how to fix it. In the top right corner of my screen there's an icon, and it looks like its the shift/caps key icon, just aA^ (up arrow). The touchpad works, and I can scroll around, but the touchpad button or the enter button to open an application does not work, nor do any of the other keys. If I pull the battery and restart the phone, its still been doing that, and if I don't touch it and the screen fades to black, when I touch the buttons, its like the phone is off. I had this problem earlier in the week and it fixed itself, but its been doing it again. Any ideas on whats causing this, or how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi chris644 and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
This icon in the top right corner you are seeing indicates that the caps lock has been enabled. If you press the shift button again, this should remove the icon from the top of the screen.
    Thanks.

  • Images have ? symbol on the top right corner of the thumbnail  what does this mean and how do I remove it?

    Q - My images have a
? symbol on the top right corner of the thumbnail what does this mean and how do I remove it?
    A - The
? symbol is used to identify a file that Lightroom can no longer access; probably because it has been moved using OS drag/drop or Move command rather than Lightroom.
    Click the
? symbol will cause a small dialog will appear. This dialog will provide information as to where the file was originally located along with an option to find (Locate) it again.
As you'll quickly realise, clicking the
? symbol is fine for finding individual files that may have been relocated, but not for large numbers. There must be a better way
Look at the Folder panel (left side of Library module) and you should find that the folder/subfolder containing the files that Lightroom can no longer find are shown in Red text. It is the red text that Lightroom uses to help you identify a folder/subfolder that contains files that it has lost track off.
    On the Mac you should
Ctrl-click (right-click when using two button mouse) the folder/subfolder, a pop-up menu will appear. From the pop-up menu choose the command
Locate Missing Folder, a dialog should appear. The dialog gives you access to every hard disk connected to your computer or CD/DVDs if they're in the tray. Use this dialog to navigate to the location where the folder is now located, then select this folder (not the files). Finally, press the
Choose button and allow Lightroom to do its stuff.
The method described above also applies to the PC version although the dialog is called
    Browse for Folder and the
    Choose button is replaced by
    OK.
You can avoid getting into a situation were Lightroom looses track of your folders/subfolders by using a variation of above.

  • HT1689 What is the meaning of the small arrow icon top right corner, please.

I am puzzled by the arrow icon at the top right corner of my iPad.  Bluetooth, capacity used and battery condition are self-explanatory, but the arrow icon?

It's there to let you know the application you are in is using your location data.
Like if you use the Target App, it will tell you what stores are close to you.

  • Macbook air 2012 not displaying icon on the top right corner

    hi guys
as the title, my macbook air isn't displaying icon on the top right corner. for instance, my volume icon and wifi icon disappear. furthermore, ocaasionally there some flashes on my screen. this never happen to me before and i am reinstalling my OS 10.8 right now. Anyone know what is wrong with my laptop?

    Hi Matze_Moto,
It should not be an issue. What you are seeing is the ability to Mirror your display to an Apple TV. If you feel that there is an issue, click on the menu to see if it is actually connected to another display. Check out the article below for more information.

  • Settings is always showing a 1 at the top right corner on the icon.

My "Settings" is always showing a red 1 at the top right corner of the icon. There is no update at all, and this is annoying me. I restore my phone, make sure everything is up to date, and the number 1 is still showing. Anyone with this issue?

Keep trying.  The 1 is telling you to do something.
Pretend it's a mystery, and you're Scooby Doo.

  • What does the icon with a lock and almost closed circle mean? it is located by my % of battery life top right corner.

i was in an app and after getting out there is this lock with an almost closed circle around it in the top right corner near the battery...what does this mean?  it doesn't belong there and it is driving me a bit crazy...help

Do you mean the little clock face?
If so that is the alarm icon.
That you have an alarm set.

  • What does this symbol (in the top right corner of the screen) mean: a lock icon with an arrow encircling it?

so there's this little icon at the top right corner of my iTouch 32GB (next to the battery icon) that's driving me crazy.
can anyone tell me what it means, and how to get rid of it?
    much appreciated
    b.

It is the Orientation lock.  To disable it or turn it off, double click your Home button and swipe your finger to the right on the Multitasking Bar.  Here you'll see the Orientation lock.  Tap it once to turn it off.
